D. Lyman, one of the pioneers of Jackson County anmd a most highly respected and honored citizen of Maquoketa, died at his home on West Platt Street, Thursday morning, April 14 at 8 o'clock, the immediate cause of death being a stroke of paralysis which he underwent the Tuesday night previous. His peaceful passing away was a fitting end to nearly eighty-three years of honorable, upright, Christian living and a life of usefulness. His nature was a quiet unassuming one, and only those whose lives were close to his knew the true world of his noble character. Stephen Dewey Lyman was born in Sharon, Litchfield County, Connecticut, June 23, 1815. When quit young he went with his parents to New York State and from there to Ohio and thence to Illinois. In 1856 he came to Iowa settling in Maquoketa where he continued to reside up to the time of his death. For some time after coming to this city he and his brother Thomas were engaged in the merchantile business, but in 1859 he was admitted to the bar and has been an honor to the legal profession ever since. During his residence here Mr. Lyman ably filled the office of City Solicitor, justice of the peace, school director and others of equal importance. He was an earnest Christian and a consistent member of the Congregational Church. Mr. Lyman was twice married-the first time to Miss Julia House, who died November 28, 1854. The second time to Hannah Mathilda Barrows, on December 25, 1855, in this city, who survives to mourn the loss of a model husband. Mr. Lyman was the father of five children, two of whom-John H. of Topeka, Kansas, and Frank D. of Maquoketa-survive him. The funeral services were held at his late home on West Platt Street Saturday morning, at 10 o'clock, the Rev. Samuel Shepherd of the Congregational Church preaching the sermon. The attendance was large. Interment took place at Mt. Hope Cemetery.
