Charles Lee Murray, was born at Lancaster, Perry County, Pennsylvania, July 4, 1840, and died at Marion, Iowa, October 23, 1887. The subject of this sketch spent his youth and early manhood in his native state. He responded to his country’s call and served in the army during the latter part of the war, receiving disabilities from which he was a sufferer even to the close of life. He was a member of Iuka Post No. 131, Grand Army of the Republic, Bellevue, Iowa. At the close of the war he resumed his legal studies and was soon after admitted to the bar. He practiced law for several years in Bloomfield and Philadelphia. In 1868 he made a trip through the west with the hope of restoring his health and in 1872 he became a permanent resident of Marion, Iowa. He has always regarded Bellevue as his home, though much of his time has been spent elsewhere. He was united in marriage to Miss Emma McElhenny, on New Year’s eve of 1873. He returned to Marion this summer and engaged in the real estate business, displaying a good deal of vigor. Though he has long been a great sufferer, few realized how frail he was and the announcement of his death on Sabbath morning was the first intimation that many had that he had ever been sick. He was a man of fine literary taste, courteous and social in his disposition, and made fast friends among those who knew him most intimately. A wife, mother, two sisters, and four brothers survive him.-Marion Register File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ia/jackson/obits/m/murray296gob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/iafiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb
