A. Pearson, Sunday at 4:00 p.m., January 13, 1889, Thomas Pearson, aged 74 years, 10 months, 12 days. There has passed away from this earth one of nature’s noblemen, a gentleman whose exemplary deeds and kind acts will be remembered by all who knew him. Thomas Pearson was born in the village of Thrisk, near Leeds, England, March 1st 1814. The Pearson family, in which there were several brothers, emigrated to America in 1832, and settled at or near Utica, New York. Thomas Pearson and Eliza J. Bryan were married November 4, 1839, and had the husband been spared to his wife and friends they would have together celebrated their golden wedding November next. From New York Mr. Pearson and his family removed to Chicago, Illinois, and soon after to Elgin, Illinois, and in 1851 they came to Iowa. The deceased loved the country of his adoption and in the late war, though well along in years offered his services to defend the flag to which he had sworn allegiance by enlisting in the 6th Cavalry in 1862. He was rejected on account of his age, but his determination to aid in putting down the country’s foe was not to be shaken, and he soon after enlisted in the Gray Beard Regiment, everyone in the regiment being over 45 years of age. As a compliment to his business ability he was transferred from the regiment to an office at the headquarters at St. Louis, in which capacity he served faithfully and honorably until the close of the war. His family remained at St. Louis, where his son and only child, T. A. Pearson, was educated. In 1865, when the deceased received an honorable discharge he returned to Iowa and since then he has resided on his farm near Sterling.
