Mary Matilda Gebert was born in Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania on October 24, 1828. She was married to James M. Riland January 1, 1848. at Pine Grove, Pennsylvania, by Rev. W. Minnig, pastor of the United Brethren Church. She came to Monmouth, Iowa in November 1857, where she resided until November, 1872, when she removed to Dubuque, Iowa. Her husband died in Colorado in 1888. In July, 1893, she removed to Omaha, Nebraska and made her home with her daughter, Anna. Mrs. Riland was the mother of nine children, of whom four sons and three daughters survive her: William G. of Maquoketa, Jerome K. of Dubuque, James L. of Leadville, Colorado, Mrs. Anna R. King and Miss Cora of Omaha, Elmer E. of Kansas City, Mo., and Mrs. Ida R. Brunsing of Seattle, Washington. A funeral service was held at Omaha, conducted by Rev. Mr. Foster of the Immanuel Baptist Church. The remains were brought to Monmouth and buried at the Monmouth Cemetery by the side of two little children.
