Slattery, Sr. at the age of 78 years and 3 months answered the final summons at her country home two miles west of Zwingle at 5:20 o'clock on the morning of September 20, 1920, after an illness of three months with heart trouble. Mrs. Slattery was the widow of the late Wm. Slattery who died eight years ago on the home farm. Mrs. Slattery came to Iowa in the fall of 1853 from Indiana, by steamboat, landing at Dubuque. The fertile fields of Iowa were then unbroken prairies and wolves, deer and other wild animals roamed at will. Neighbors were few and far between. Her father, the late Thos. Degan, Sr., purchased the farm, still in possession of the Degan family, in Otter Creek township, where Mrs. Sarah Degan Slattery spent her childhood days and her early married life. Twenty-five years ago she and her husband and family moved to their late home near Zwingle. She was born in Montreal, Canada, July 14, 1842, and could relate many interesting events of her early childhood spent in their Canadian home. Surviving members of the family are daughter, Miss Mayme and son, Chris Slattery, at home; Will of Dubuque, Frank of Zwingle and Mrs. J. D. Biggens. Also a sister Miss M. A. Degan of Otter Creek and a brother, Jas. Degan of Chumwater, Wyoming, and nine grandchildren. Her funeral was held from the late home to the Assumption Catholic church at Sylvia Switch, Wednesday morning, Rev. Mullen, pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. Friedman of LaMotte and Rev. Lougham of Otter Creek, interment was made in the Assunmption cemetery at Sylvia Switch. The casket was completely covered with floral emblems of friends and was borne by six friends of the family. Many from a distance attended her funeral which was one of the largest ever held in the neighborhood. Thus a loving wife and mother, kind friend and neighbor has closed her life work here, to enter her Great Beyond.
