Smola was born in Maquoketa, July 15, 1860, and died at his home on Quarry street Feb. 19, 1914. Peerless Lodge No. 60, Knights of Pythias took charghe of the services at the house and together with Jackson Lodge No. 33 of Odd Fellows, marched to Mt. Hope cemetery where the latter conducted the services at the grave. The Modern Woodman and D. O. K. K. also turned out in a body, Mr. Smola being a member of these Orders. Mr. Smola was united in marriage to Miss Anna B. Seda in 1883. To this happy union seven children were born, four of whom survive him, namely: Lenna of Platteville, Wis., Lawrence, Zoa and Ruth of Maquoketa. Besides his wife and children he leaves his mother, one brother and four sisters, William F. of Maquoketa, Mrs. E. Z. Sostheim of Chicago, Mrs. Minnie Miller and Mrs. Ed Tubbs of Maquoketa, and Mrs. H. E. Strawbridge of Findlay, Ohio, to mourn his loss of a most affectionate husband, indulgent father and beloved son and brother.
