She was married April 8, 1884, to Sanford Stoughton. To this union were born five children, Charles the oldest died when about three years of age. Esther, Lydia, Oliver and Alice with the father survive her. She leaves a husband who is practically an invalid, being sorely afflicted with rheumatism. Mrs. Stoughton has lived all her life in Fairfield Township. This summer she went to the mountains in Colorado in hopes that this might prove helpful to her, but she failed to find relief, and died in Maquoketa on Saturday morning January 28, at the home of her husband's sister, Mrs. Evans, on Second street, surrounded by kind friends who did all in their power to comfort and help her and smoothed her pathway to the end. The deceased was a kind mother, a tender and affectionate wife, and a respected neighbor. One of the last things she said to those about her was, “Though I would like to stay for the sake of husband and children, yet I am ready to go.” Rev. J. F. Black officiated and the burial took place at Union Center.
