The Wife of Herbert E. Truax Asks For A Divorce

The following article taken from the Chicago Democrat of Wednesday, September 
21st, relates to a former resident of Maquoketa, and one who is well known in 
this vicinity:

Numerous sensational charges against Dr. Herbert E. Truax, brother of Chairman 
Charles Truax of the peace jubilee committee, and a prominent north side 
physician, with offices at 511 Irving Park Boulevard and formerly a minister, 
are contained in a bill for divorce filed in the circuit court by his wife, 
Elizabeth H. Truax. She asserts that since their marriage in July, 1894, she 
has been treated with extreme and repeated cruelty by her husband.

According to the complaint of Mrs. Truax, their matrimonial troubles began  
early in 1895, when they were living at Lagansport, Indiana, when she asserts 
her husband choked her and told her that if she had shown any sign of fear he 
would have killed her. The bill also declares that one Sunday in July at 
Lafayette, Indiana, where Dr. Truax was then preaching, he threw the 
complainant to the floor and then left the house. Since that date Mrs. Truaz 
declares her husband made several attempts on her life, one about a month 
later, when, it is said, he pursued her with an open jack-knife. According to 
her statement, Mrs. Truax has supported herself for several years by school 
teaching. She is now employed in the internal revenue office.
