He was born in Allegheny Co., PA in 1828, where he remained until 1854, and then moved to this State and settled in this county about three miles west of Monroe. In 1862 he responded to his country's call and enlisted as 2nd Lieutenant in Co. E., 40th Regt. I.V.I. He served three years, was honorably discharged and returned home. He was appointed Postmaster in Aug ust1866, which office he has held ever since. He married Miss L. P. GREGORY in Marion Co., IA. She was born in Louisa Co., IA. They have eight children. He was born in Washington Co., Penn. in 1837. When he was 3 years of age his parents moved to Pittsburgh, remaining until 1845, in which year they moved to Ohio, thence to Marion Co., this state in 1855, where they still reside. In Dec. 1856, the subject of this sketch came to this county and engaged in the mercantile business, which business he continued in until 1874, when he disposed of it and engaged in banking which business he has continued in since. He married Miss Mary TEFFT in this city; she was born in Washington Co., N.Y. They have six children: Cora A., Robert Edgar, Walter T., Abbie D., Mary A., Guy Dix. Owing to his business qualifications, Mr. ANDERSON was very efficient in organizing the bank at this place; he enjoys confidence and esteem of his fellow citizens to a high degree; with force of character and perseverance he unites discretion with gentlemanly deportment; these qualities have insured him favor and success in business. Politically, Mr. Anderson has always been a Democrat. He has held various local offices, and at present writing is Treasurer of the School Board. Himself and family are members of the Baptist Church. BARNES, Hodgen; Farmer, Sec. 26, P.O. Monroe. He was born in England in 1823; came to this country with his parents in 1833. They settled in Pittsburgh, Penn. While in Pittsburgh, he married Miss Mary Ann THOMAS. They moved to this county in 1869. They have six children-- Mary E., Eliza B., Helen J., Sarah W., Frank C., and Jonathan Howard. Mr. Barnes is a Republican in politics; is a member of the present Board of Township Trustees to which office he was elected two years ago. He owns 160 acres of land, on a portion of which, he has found several chunks of almost pure copper, and also several pieces of gold quartz rock, one piece almost the size of a large hickory nut was found to contain about three dollars in pure gold. The existence of these floats goes to prove that there may be vast gold and copper mines on or in the vicinity where those specimens were found. There were two of Mr. Barnes' brothers in the army--John and William; John served three years in a Pennsylvania regiment, and was honorably discharged. William died from the effect of wounds received in the front at Petersburg. BARR, George; Teamster; Monroe. BATES, W. W.; Farmer; Sec. 10; P. O. Fairmount. BARTHOLOMEW, H. C.; Of the firm of Card & Co., furniture manufacturers, Monroe, Iowa. He was born in Walworth, Wis. In 1843; where he remained until 20 years of age; he then came to Buchanan Co., this state; thence to this town in 1865. He married Miss Ellen M. CARD in Buchanan Co., this state, in March 1865. She was born in Broome Co., N.Y. They have three children--Eva, Carrie L., and Della M. Mr. B. is Secretary of the I.O.O.F. In politics, he is a Republican. They are members of the Congregational Church. BATEMAN, M. W.; Deputy Sheriff and Constable, Monroe. He was born in Evansburg, Penn. in 1839; came to Van Buren Co., this state, in 1864. Becoming dissatisfied and desiring a larger field of operation, he crossed the plains with an ox team to Idaho, that land of promised gold; in his case, however, it proved to be all promise and no gold. In 1865, he returned to this State and engaged in the grain trade at this place, thus being the first to engage in that business in Monroe; he continued in that business until 1874, when he was appointed Deputy Sheriff, and elected Constable, which offices he has been the incumbent of since. He married Miss Jane SULGROVE, in Van Buren Co., this State. She was a native of Indiana. They have six children. Politically, he is a Republican. BLOUNT, George; Coal merchant, Monroe; born in Derbyshire, Eng. in 1832; came to this country in 1857; stopped in Iowa City, this State, about two weeks; then went to Rock Island Co., Ill., remaining there two years. He then moved to Henry Co., Ill., where he remained until 1856, when he removed to this county. He owns twenty-eight acres of coal land in Sec. 33, Fairview Tp. He also owns seventy-five acres of land in Marion Co., sixty acres being coal land. He employs sixteen men during the Winter months in taking out coal. He married Miss Ann ROLLAND in England. He was born in Knox Co., OH in 1854. He came to Newton this county in 1876, and to Monroe in November 1877, and engaged in his present business. Mr. BUCKLEY is a native of Yorkshire, England, born Feb. 6, 1828. He married Miss S. DUNKERLEY in England; they came to this country in 1856; settled in Rock Island Co., Ill., where they remained until 1866, when they moved to this county. They have five children living—Samuel (married to Miss B. LACKEY), Melvina (married Fremont LUMMEY), James, Mary and Robert. In 1871, Mr. Buckley was appointed Inspector of Coal Mines, which office he held until 1876, when he resigned; he was also a member of the board of Township Trustees from 1871 to 1876. He was elected Township Assessor in 1877, which office he now holds. He is also Secretary of School, which position he was elected to three years ago. He had one brother, James, in the army during the war of the rebellion; he served with the 126th Ill. V. C.; he was severely wounded in the siege of Vicksburg, and died in the service Jan. 18, 1864. Politically, Mr. BUCKLEY is a Republican. He owns 188 acres of land, 100 acres of it being underlaid with four feet of coal. BUCKLEY, Samuel; Farmer; P. O. Monroe. BUCKNER, H..; Farmer; Sec. 18; P. They were married in 1860. She was born in Allegheny Co., Penn. They moved to Greene Co., Wis. in 1862, and from there to this place (Monroe) in 1868. They have three children -- Anna Belle, Homer W. and Luther. Mr. BURCHINAL and family are members of the Baptist Church; he is also a charter member of the I.O.O.F. at this place; was elected to the Grand Lodge in the years 1870-75-76. He married Miss Susan WHITAKER in 1853; moved to Jefferson Co., this State, the same year, thence to Marion Co. in 1854, where they remained until March 1865, when they moved to this county. They have four children -- Willard F., Marrietta, Florence L., and Annie L. Mr. BYERS owns about 425 acres of land. Is a Republican in politics. He is a frank, generous man; public enterprises, which give promise of general good, always receive from him a cheerful support. BYERS, W. F.; Farmer; P. O. Monroe. CAMPBELL, P.; Retired farmer; Monroe. CARD & CO.; (M. L. CARD, H. C. BARTHOMLEW), proprietors of furniture factory, Monroe. They manufacture furniture, safes, secretaries, writing desks and boxes of all sizes. They have a good planing-mill and all the machinery required in a furniture manufactory, and are prepared to do all kinds of work in their line. Mr. CARD was born in Broome Co., N.Y. in 1845; in 1856, he moved with his parents to Wisconsin. In 1860, they moved to Buchanan Co., this State, thence to this county in 1861. CARTER, W. H.; Farmer; Sec. 28; P. O. Monroe. CARTER, W. S.; Farmer; Sec. 14; P. O. Monroe. CARTNEY, G. R.; Farmer; Sec. 29; P. O. Monroe. CHADWICK, Thomas; Assistant Cashier of the Bank of Monroe. He was born near Manchester, England in 1832, where he remained until he was 14 years of age. The incidents of his childhood did not differ materially from that of other wide-awake boys; he had a strong passion to engage in a sea-faring life, and from his 14th until his 18th year we find him sailing from England to India, China, Asia and Africa; in the latter country he remained one year, most of which time he was within two degrees of the equator. In 1850, he returned to England and engaged as Cashier in an importing house in Manchester, which position he occupied about 4 years, at the end of which time his health began failing from the close confinement to which he was subjected. He resigned his position and emigrated to this country, bringing his mother, brother and sister with him. They stopped in Iowa City, this State, in which place our subject engaged in the forwarding and commission business. Iowa City was then the terminus of the railroad, and pork, grain, implements, and all kinds of produce had to be hauled in wagons to different towns in the surrounding country. He continued in the forwarding and commission business until 1862, when he was offered the position of Superintendent of the Moline Plow Works in Moline, Ill., which position he accepted and filled four years. At the end of that time he came to Newton, this county, where he was associated with the First National Bank until 1875, which year he moved to this city. In politics, he is a Republican. In 1876, he was elected Mayor of Monroe. He is the present Secretary of Fairview Lodge, A., F. & A. M.; is Secretary of the Gebel Chapter, R. A. M., U., D. He married Miss LANCASTER in Tiskilwa, Ill. in 1852. She was born on the River Tyne, near Newcastle, England. They have four children -- Clara, Charles H., William A., and Mary Ellen. CHAMBERLAIN, J.; Farmer; Sec. 9; P. O. Fairmount. CHIPPS, Joshua N.; Farmer, Sec. 7, P.O. Monroe; born in Tompkins Co., N.Y. in 1829. When he was nine years of age, he removed with his parents to Morrow Co., Ohio, where he married Miss Charlotte SCARBROUGH. They moved to this county in 1854. He owns 117 acres of land. He then came West, remaining one year, at the end of which time he returned to Ohio, and attended the Normal school at Lebanon two years; at the end of that time, he entered the office of Judge DICKEY at Mt. Gilead, and commenced the study of law; was admitted to the Iowa bar Nov. 10, 1876. He married Miss Mary E. EYERLY, in this city, in Nov. 1876. In politics, he is a Republican. He is of frank and generous disposition; though a young man, he has thus far proven himself eminently successful in the management of legal affairs; he is industrious and studious, and aims to do all things well. COLTER, S.; Laborer; P. O. Monroe. COWLES, George M.; Bookkeeper at LANGAN and TAFTS, Monroe; born in Summit Co., OH in 1849; removed to this city with his parents in 1855. He married Miss Emma FOSTER in Indianola, this State. She was born in Indiana in 1848. They have one child -- Fannie, born in Monroe Dec. 25, 1874. He is Republican in politics; is a member of the Masonic fraternity; also a member of the A. O. U. W. Was elected City Treasurer in 1877 and in 1878, and is the present incumbent of that office. His father, Oliver Cowles, was born in New York in 1808. He married Miss Hannah M. OLMSTEAD, Otsego Co., New York in 1830; in 1838, they moved to Summit Co., Ohio, thence to this county in 1855.; settled in this place. They have nine children, all of whom are living. One of their sons served in Co. E, 40th I. V. I., during the war of the rebellion; he served three years and was honorably discharged. COWLES, O.; Carpenter and builder; Monroe. CRAGAN, M.; Farmer; Sec. 10; P. O. Monroe. CUNNINGHAM, Joseph; Proprietor of boot and shoe shop; Monroe. He was born in Rappahannock Co., Va. in 1842. While he was a boy, his parents moved to Ohio, where our subject remained until the breaking-out of the war of the rebellion. He then enlisted in Co. C, 22nd Ohio V. I., to serve three months; at the expiration of that time, he re-enlisted in Co. H, 73rd Ohio V. I., served in that regiment until March 3, 1865. He was then promoted Captain of Co. D, 188th Ohio V. I. He was in the battles of Morefield, Winchester, Cedar Mountain, Second Bull Run, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, New Baltimore, Gettysburg, Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, Atlanta, and a series of battles around that place. After his discharge, he returned to Ohio, remaining there until January 1866. He married Miss Fannie BAIN in this county in 1867. They have four children-- Charley B., A. Blanche, Ralph A. and Archie N. Mr. Cunningham is Republican in politics. CUSTER, A.; Justice of the Peace; Monroe. DALRYMPLE, A. L.; Druggist, Monroe. He was born in Knox Co., OH in 1824, and moved to Mills Co., IA in 1853. He was appointed Deputy Treasurer in 1858 and 1859. In 1864 he moved to Newton and engaged in the drug business until 1865, then moved to Monroe and engaged in the hardware business in which he remained but a short time. He married Miss Anna E. GALLHER in Knox Co OH. They have three children-- Preston, Elton, and Myrtle. He is a Republican, and a member of the A.F. & A. M. He and his wife are members of the Baptist Church. Mr. Dalrymple has a drug store on the west side of the square, and keeps a full line of fresh drugs, medicines, paints, oils, etc. DALRYMPLE, P. A.; Clerk; Monroe. DANKS, T. J.; Coal miner; P. O. Monroe. DEAKIN, John Q.; Retired, Monroe. He was born in Warren Co., Ohio in 1809; in 1830, went to Vermillion Co., Ill. Served in the Black Hawk during the years 1831-32. Came to this state in 1846, and to this county in 1847, and settled in Des Moines Twp. He laid out the village of Vandalia, where he built grist and saw mills which were run under his supervision sixteen years. He was also engaged in the mercantile business in Vandalia six years. He owns 300 acres of land in Des Moines Twp., the village of Vandalia being located on a portion of it; also 480 acres of land in Guthrie Co., this State. In the early history of this county, he was elected County Surveyor, which position he held several years; he has also held various local offices. He has been married twice; first wife was Miss Sarah SHEHRER; present wife was Irene PEIRCE. He has six children; two of his sons were in the Union Army during the war of the rebellion -- William W. and James Edwin. They served in Co. E. 14th I. V. I., and were honorably discharged. Mr. DEAKIN, in politics, was originally a Whig, but on the decline of that party became a Republican, and has remained a firm supporter of that party. DECKER, A. J.; Farmer; Sec. 8; P. O. Monroe. A.; Farmer; P. O. Monroe. DIX, G. J.; Firm of SCHENK and DIX, proprietors of the Monroe City Mills; born in Jefferson Co., N.Y. in 1833; in 1858, he came West,0 and engaged in milling in Dubuque, this State, until the Spring of 1865. He then moved to Pella, Marion Co., this State, where he ran the Washington Flour Mills until 1867. He then moved to this town which he has made his home. He married Miss Isabella RICHARDSON in Dubuque, Iowa , Sept. 8, 1862. She was born in Jefferson Co., N.Y. They have two children -- Minnie, born in Marion Co., and Alice, born in this county. Mr. DIX is a stockholder and one of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Monroe. He is a Republican in politics. He is genial in manner, enterprising and public spirited, and in him Monroe has a citizen that she could ill afford to lose; he understands his business thoroughly, and is a good business man, and since coming to this city, he has made a host of friends. The SCHENK & DIX mills have all the improvements in mill machinery for making the New Process flour; they are prepared to do all kinds of work in the milling line; they have had years of experience in the milling business, and have always made it a success for themselves and customers. DIXON, George W.; of the firm of DIXON, FISHER & Co., dealers in hardware; Monroe; born in Shelby Co., Ohio, in 1836; came to Monroe in 1867, and engaged in the hardware business. He married Miss Sarah A. HOVER in Allen Co., Ohio. She was born in Lima, Allen Co. Lima is situated on the Ottawa stream and was the old camping ground of the Shawnee Indians; it is thickly sifted of the ashes of the past, and is the heart of the historic interest of Allen Co.; it was the scene of her most exciting Indian councils and the home of half her legends and traditions. Their old Council House alone is left, it stands there yet a monument to a now forgotten and almost extinct race. During the war of the rebellion, Mr. Dixon enlisted in Co. F, 20th Reg. Ohio Vol., for four months. At the expiration of that time, he enlisted in Co. B, 81st Ohio Reg. Vol.; was promoted to first Lieutenant in June 1864, and promoted to Captain immediately afterward. Himself and wife are members of the Baptist Church. They have six children. Politically, he is a Republican. During the time he was in the service, he was in a number of battles, the principal ones were Shiloh, Resaca, Corinth and siege of Atlanta. J.; Carpenter and builder; Monroe; was born in Greene Co., Penn. in 1834, where he remained until 1859, when he went to Knox Co., Ohio, where he married Miss Sarah M. WRIGHT, Sept. 22, 1862. She was born in Ohio. Mr. Ferguson enlisted in Co. F, 121st Ohio V. I., and served until the war was over. He was honorably discharged in June 1865; was in a number of engagements, the principal ones being the battles of Perryville, Chickamauga, Kenesaw Mountain, Resaca, and all through the Atlanta campaign. The war being over, he returned to Knox Co., Ohio, remaining until the Fall of 1876, when he moved to this place (Monroe). Mr. F. is a Republican in politics; is a member of the Council, and has held other local offices. Himself and wife are members of the M. E. Church. There was two of his brothers in the army during the war of the rebellion -- Joseph and Lemon; both served in Ohio Regiments, and were honorably discharged. FIELDS, Robert; Farmer; Sec. 28; P. O. BENNINGTON in Pennsylvania. They have one child -- Ella E. Mr. FLICK came to Monroe in 1871; he keeps a full and complete stock in the harness line. He remained in Ohio until 1844, when he went to La Grange Co. Ind., and was engaged in the mercantile business in that county a number of years. He moved to this county in 1865, and engaged in the manufacturing of wagons and carriages the first two years he was here; at the end of that time, he engaged in the stock and grain business, in which he continued four years. In 1872, he was appointed Director of the Newton & Monroe R.R., which position he filled until June 1877; during a portion of that time, was also local Treasurer of the road. He married Miss H. L. HILL in La Grange Co., Ind., on the 25th of December, 1856. She was a native of New York. They have five children --Cleaon B., born May 1, 1859; Florence May, Oct. 13, 1861; Harry T., Sept. 16, 1866; Lilly P., March 4, 1871; Nettie, Sept. 19, 1873. During his residence in this county, Mr. FULLER has held various railroad offices. He was ordained in Greene Co., Penn. in 1851. In 1869, he came West settling in this city (Monroe), and had pastoral charge of the Baptist Church until 1875, since which time he has been Pastor of the Baptist Church at Ashland, Wapello Co., two years, and at Otley, Marion Co., since Jan. 1878. He was elected Justice of the Peace in this place in 1876, which office he is still the incumbent of. He is also President of the School Board. He married Miss Elizabeth WILLARD in Fayette Co., Penn. in 1846. She was born in Meigs Co., Ohio. He is one of the pioneer settlers of Jasper Co. He married Miss. E. F. LOYD in Highland Co., Ohio. She was born in Madison Co., Va. They have had nine children, six of whom are living --William F., who enlisted in an Iowa regiment during the war of the rebellion, and was honorably discharged; John H., who served in an Iowa regiment and was honorably discharged after three years service, died in 1872; James M., who also served in an Iowa regiment, and was honorably discharged; George W, Thomas J., Samantha Ann (now Mrs. METTLER); Joseph M. Mr. KING was born in Edgar Co., Ill. on the 6th of May 1846, where he remained until 1855, when he moved with he parents to this county. He engaged in his present business in 1872. Mr. KING is most undoubtedly a most energetic business man; he is a good financier, and has succeeded with a small capital to start out with in building up a splendid trade; he justly merits patronage of the citizens of Monroe and vicinity. Politically, he is Republican, having acted with that party since he attained his majority. His father, John KING, was a native of Tennessee. He married Miss Elizabeth KING; they moved to Indiana, thence to Illinois, and from Illinois to this county in 1855, settling on College Farm, four miles north of Newton, where they remained until 1870, when they moved to Newton. Their children were John, who enlisted in the 21st I. V. I. and served until peace was restored; he was in several battles and wounded at Stone River; he married Julia McCORD of this county; James A., who at the breaking-out of the war of the rebellion, enlisted in Co. B, 5th I. V. I.; was promoted Captain, and served until the close of the war, and was honorably discharged; he then went to Greenville, Miss., remaining until the Spring of 1866; when he was about to return to his home in the north, he fell a victim to Southern hate, and was foully assassinated; his remains were brought home and interred at College Farm Cemetery, north of Newton; and A. He moved to Monroe in 1874, and engaged in the grain trade; he is one of the firm known as the Monroe Elevator Company, which is composed of himself, LANGAN, WEEKS, and GIBSON; they endeavor to conduct their business in a manner that will commend them to the farmers everywhere; and judging by the business they do they are abundantly successful; they keep a full supply of farmer’s implements. Mr. KNIGHT married Miss Sarah Jane LANGAN in Wapello Co.; they have three children --Frank L., Warren M., and Willis A. Politically, he is a Republican. He is a friend to education and cheerfully aids any literary enterprise. KODER, J.; Attorney at law; office, corner of Commercial and Washington streets; Monroe; was born March 14, 1836, in Ashland Co., Ohio; came to Iowa when only a little over 13 years of age; attended college at Pella, Marion Co., Iowa. Was married twice; had two children by first wife, and two by second wife. Was admitted to practice in Marion Co. in 1871, and was admitted to practice in the Federal Courts March 3, 1876, at Des Moines, IA, before Hon. J. F. Dillon. His first wife's name was Mary A. HART, who died in 1861. He was married to this second wife July 3, 1862. Her name was Artimisia E. HOWARD. He studied law with Hon. V. B. Bennett, and in 1869, in connection with his preceptor and H. . McCULLY, started the notorious Copperhead at Pella Marion Co. He was in later years engaged in the publication of the Des Moines Valley Herald at Monroe, taking that paper with a circulation of 150, and when he sold out to J. S. HARPER, of Ill., it had a circulation of nearly 800. KODER, S.; was born Nov. 14, 1842, in Richland Co. Ohio, remaining there until the Fall of 1847, at which time his parents removed to Iowa, settling near Eddyville in Wapello Co.; remained there till the Fall of 1851, at which time they removed to Jasper Co., Iowa, remaining there but a few months, they removed to Red Rock Twp., Marion Co., Iowa. His mother still resides there, being a widow, having lost her husband June 5, 1871. S. KODER remained with his mother till the Spring of 1877; he at that time removed back to Jasper Co., Iowa. He was married March 8, 1876, at which time he was engaged in the study of law, under the tutelage of his brother, J. KODER, having been prior to that time, a farmer. He then went to Bloomington, Ill., and engaged in the practice of his profession there until October 1869. He then went to Leavenworth, Kansas, thence to Tecumseh, Nebraska, thence to Newton, this county, all in the Winter of 1869; practiced medicine in Newton until 1872; came to this city (Monroe) in May 1873. He married Miss Sarah FENNER in Newton in 1870. She was born in Highland Co., Ohio. They have two children living, Annie Myrtle, and Gertrude May; lost two, Martin and Effie. Dr. LOAR's drug store is on the south side of the public square. He has a complete selection of drugs and medicines constantly on hand. He is a physician of several years practice, and therefore, is fully prepared to compound medicines with entire safety to his customers. The one thing to be desired more than all else in a drug store is a man to fill out prescriptions, that understands the nature of the compounds, this the citizens have in the person of Dr. LOAR. She was born in Washington Co., N.Y. in 1846. Mrs. McKEE's father, Peter BAIN, was a native of New York. He was born Feb. 2, 1809; he married Miss J. McNEIL; they moved to this county in 1853. She was born July 16, 1811; she died in this county Dec. 19, 1860. He died April 23, 1875. He was a most prominent and worthy citizen; he raised a large family, several of whom are now living in this county. Monroe; born in Ireland in 1828; came to this country in 1849; lived in Pittsburgh, Penn. until 1853; he then went to New York and sailed to California where he followed mining with fair success until 1856; in the Fall of which year he returned to Pittsburgh, remaining until 1861, when he came to this county. He married Miss Ellen VINYARD, in this county, in 1868. She was born in Linn Co., this State, in 1846. They have three children --Arestine Sarah, Laura N. and Clemenza Edna. During the war of the rebellion, Mr. MATEER enlisted in Co. E, 40th Iowa V. I.; he was enrolled Aug. 12, 1862, and was honorably discharged Aug. 2, 1865. He was in several battles, among them being the siege of Vicksburg. There were two of Mrs. MATEER's brothers in the army, L. C. and Thomas J. VINYARD. L. C. enlisted in the 4th Iowa V. C.; he died in the service. Thomas J. also enlisted in an Indiana regiment; served three years and seven months and was honorably discharged. Their father William VINYARD, was a native of Virginia. He was born Nov. 24, 1811; came to Linn Co., this State, in 1830. Married Sarah CARROLL; she was born in Canada. They were married in Linn Co. in 1840; they moved to this county in 1865. He was ordained Deacon of the Missionary Baptist Church in Marion Co, this State; he died in this county Aug. 20, 1875. Monroe. RUTTER, J. M.; Farmer; Monroe. SALADA, J.; Plasterer; Monroe. SALLADA, William Henry; Monroe; born in Lycoming Co., N. Y., July 12, 1846. In 1852, his parents moved to Mercer Co., to miles south of Greenville, in this place. When a boy, he assisted his father on the farm and attended district school. March 1, 1864, he enlisted in Co. B, 57th Penn. Vet. Vols.; in April 1864, he was detailed on the field staff as Orderly; he also carried the regimental mail; in the same month he was in the battle of the Wilderness, and also in the charge at Spottsylvania. In July, was in the battle of Petersburg. In August, his command advanced on the rebels and drove them within seven miles of Richmond; at this place Mr. SALLADA was wounded; he had been in the rear and was riding through the woods to the front, when suddenly a squad of rebels rose up, fired at him, and called on him to surrender. He wheeled about, and as he did so, one of the rebels again fired at him. The ball entered the lower margin of his left temple, between the eye and ear, and passed through his head, cut off the bridge of his nose, and came out through his right eye, causing the loss of both eyes. He was honorably discharged. Late in August 1865, immediately upon being mustered out of the service, he engaged in keeping a retail fruit and provision store, which business he continued in until 1870. He married Miss F. D. McGINISS in Crawford Co., Penn., Aug. 11, 1866; she was born in Clarion Co. They moved to this county in 1870; have three children - Grant L. A., Harry D. and Mary E. D. Though totally blind, Mr. SALLADA has invented a combination cupboard; it combines a cupboard for dishes, receptacles for flour, etc. closet for victuals; can be made to act as a refrigerator; it also has a sink for dishwashing; it is the most complete thing we ever saw. He has also invented a new and invaluable carpet-stretcher and fastener. Politically, Mr. SALLADA has been and is in full sympathy with the Republican party; in 1875, he was elected member of the City Council in this place; in every position he has filled he has been successful. Monroe; he was born in West Virginia in 1823; during early life he received a liberal education; was licensed Methodist Minister in his native State in 1845. In 1847, he went to Indiana, where he was ordained. He labored in a ministerial capacity in Indiana until 1851, in which year he came to this county, remaining until 1852. He then went to California, and followed his ministerial duties in that State until 1856, when he returned to this State. Since 1856, he has had pastoral charge of churches in various places in Jasper, Polk and Marion Counties in this State. Married Miss Clarissa WALLACE in California in 1853; she is a native of Pennsylvania. They have one daughter - Clara. Mr. SHAFER owns eighty acres of land. He owns 190 acres of land, which is well improved. He has been very successful in life, and what he has got, he earned by his own unaided exertions and good management. SHROPSHIRE, A. They then moved to Lee Co., this State, thus becoming one of the pioneer families of Iowa. Our subject remained in Lee Co. until 1873, in which year he came to Monroe. He has been married twice. His first wife was Miss I. SPRINGER; four children by this marriage - Mary (who married H. C. SNYDER), William E., Arimantha and John C. His present wife was Margaret E. SPROW. Monroe. TOOL, Chas.; Farmer; Sec. 21; P. O. Monroe. TOOL, J. A.; Farmer and stock raiser; Sec. 34; P. O. Monroe; is one of the pioneers of this county; born inn Washington Co., Va. When he was 11 years of age, he moved with his parents to Illinois, where he attended school and received a liberal education. He came to this county with his parents in 1843. Married Miss Sarah FOUTY, in Warren Co., this State, in 1847. She was born in Indiana. The have nine children. Mr. TOOL has been prominently identified with the religious and educational interests of this county; he was licensed minister of the M. E. Church in 1858, and in early history of the county he was Justice of the Peace and member of the Board of County Commissioners. In politics, he as originally a Whig; on the decline of that party, he became a Republican, with which party he acted while he thought it was for the best interest of the country. He is now a firm supporter of the Greenback party. He owns about 700 acres of land, and is engaged in stock raising to a large extent. TOOL, John M.; Monroe; born in Washington Co., Va. in 1832; in 1836, his parents moved to Illinois; thence to Jefferson Co., this State, in 1841, where they remained two years; at the end of that time, they moved to this county, our subject moving with them. He married Miss Jane E. PAUL in Mahaska Co., this State; she was a native of Indiana. They have had five children, three of whom are living. Mr. TOOL as ordained minister of the M. E. Church by the M. E. Conference in Des Moines in 1874. TOWNSEND, Harry; Blacksmith; Monroe. TYLER, John; Grocer; Monroe; born in Switzerland in 1836; came to this country in 1857; lived in Bureau Co., Illinois three years; while there, engaged in stock dealing. In 1860 he came to this county and engaged in farming until 1872, which year he entered into his present business. He married Miss Mary LIEB in this county in 1867. She as born in Lancaster Co., Penn. in 1843. They have four children - Charley, Oscar, Fred and Samuel. Mr. TYLER is a member of the I. O. O. F. Is Democratic in politics. Mrs. TYLER's father, B. F. LIEB, a native of Pennsylvania. He married Ann SMITH. They moved to Ohio in 1845; thence to this county in 1853; she died in 1869; he died in 1873; they are buried at Vandalia, this county; there were three of their sons in the war of the rebellion - Daniel W., who served in Co. E, 14th Regt. Iowa Vol. three years; as in a number of severe battles, and was honorably discharged; Adam SMITH was Captain of Co. I, 5th Minn. Regt.; he was also Captain of an Iowa Co. ; he served four years with distinction, and was honorably discharged; William Harry, who enlisted in Co. E, 14th Regt. Iowa Vol.; he was in a number of severe engagements, among them being the battles of Shiloh and Fort Donelson; he was honorably discharged. VICKERS, C.; Clerk; Monroe. VICKERS, George; Dealer in general produce; Monroe; as born in Belmont Co., Ohio in 1832. At the breaking-out of the war of the rebellion, he enlisted in Co. B, 18th Ohio Volunteer Infantry to serve three months. At the expiration of that time, he again enlisted, this time in Co. F, 39th Ohio Volunteer Infantry; he served four years and two months; was honorably discharged in July 1865. After his discharge from the service, he returned to Ohio, remaining until 1869, in which year he came to Mahaska Co., this State, where he remained four years, at the end of which time he moved to this city. He married Miss A. WILDEY in Belmont Co., Ohio. They have two children - Chalkey and Norah. During the time Mr. VICKERS was in the service, he was in a number of battles, the principal ones being the siege of Corinth, Shiloh, Savannah and Goldsboro. VAN BARREN, D.; Baker; Monroe. When he was about 3 years of age, his parents moved to Highland Co., Ohio where our subject remained until the year of 1869, when he came to Monroe. He married Miss Mary MILLER in Highland Co., Ohio on the 24th of September, 1833. She was born in Huntingdon Co., Penn. on the 25th of December, 1811. Their children are Matilda Jane, born 24th of July, 1834, died 6th of March, 1873; Adam M., born 4th of June, 1838; Helena (now Mrs. A. CUSTER), born 6th of Aug., 1841; John, born 18th of February, 1845; Mary Ellen (now Mrs. E. D. ALLEN), born 29th of September, 1848; James M., born 5th of September, 1851. Mr. WHITE is Democratic in politics; he has been one of the Board of Directors of the Bank of Monroe since its organization; was Vice President one year. WHITEHEAD, Wm.; Retired farmer; Monroe. WHITTED, J. A.; Farmer; Sec. 32; P. O. Monroe; born in Lawrence Co., Ind. in 1830. Came to Marion Co., this State, in 1851, in which county he married Rosa A. WOODY; she was also born in Lawrence Co., Ind. They moved to this county in 1864. They have three children - John (who married Harriet TAYLOR), Robert and Mary. Mr. WHITTED owns 170 acres of land. Previous to 1861, he was a Democrat, since that time he has been Independent in politics, voting for the man he thinks will serve the interests of the country best. His father, Joseph, was a native of North Carolina; they moved to Indiana in 1819; thence to Marion Co., this State in 1851, in which county he died on July 20, 1860, aged 71 years, 2 months, 10 days; his wife Mary died Oct. 27, 1865, aged 77 years, 10 months, 7 days. WHITTED, Joseph; Laborer; Monroe. WHITTED, R. W.; Farmer; P. O. Monroe. WILLIAMS, W. H.; Attorney and counselor at law; Monroe. Mr. Williams was born in Henry Co., Kentucky in 1840. He remained in Kentucky until 1855; he then moved with his parents to Davis Co., Kan., where he remained until the Spring of 1861, when he went to Pike Co. Illinois and enlisted in Co. G, 8th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was enrolled on the 25th of July, 1861; was promoted Second Lieutenant in December 1863; First Lieutenant in March 1864; and Major in May 1865; was honorably discharged on the 22d of May, 1866. During the time he was in service he was in many severe engagements, the principal ones being the battles of Fort Donelson, at which place he was wounded three times, Jackson, Miss., Champion Hills, siege of Vicksburg, and a series of battles around that place. After his discharge, he went to Leavenworth, Kan., remaining until the Winter of 1875, when he moved to Washington, this State, where he finished his law studies and was admitted to the Iowa bar. He moved to this town in November 1877, and engaged in the practice of his profession. He married Miss A. G. GLASGOW in Washington Co., this State, in 1865. She was born in Ohio. DAY), born Nov. 26, 1853; James W., March 24, 1855; John H., Dec. 22, 1856, died June 4, 1871; Rebecca J., Sept. 22, 1858; William S., born in 1860, died May 11, 1861; Oscar N., Feb. 5, 1862; Lydia Maria, Nov. 12, 1863, died Aug. 28, 1864; Eliza Viola, June 14, 1865; George M., June 19, 1867. Mr. WOODY owns 240 acres of land. Has held various local offices; the principal ones being Justice of the Peace and School Treasurer. WORTH, J. B.; Farmer; Sec. 34; P. O. Monroe; born in Greene Co., Ky. in 1829. He removed with his parents to Morgan Co., Illinois, where he married Miss Eliza E. HOLT. She was a native of Virginia. They moved to Jefferson Co., this State, in 1843 where they remained until February of the next year. They then moved to Marion Co.; thence to this county in April 1846. They have six children living - Clarinda (she married A. SCHENCK), Samuel (he married Miss Anna YOCUM), Charles C. (he married Miss Margaret WILSON), Joseph H. (he married Miss Mary J. YOCUM), Nathan T., Sarah Ann (she married O. BRUCE). Mr. WORTH owns 209 acres of land. Himself and wife are members of the Regular Baptist Church. He has held various local offices. WRIGHT, C. J.; Farmer; Sec. 18; P. O. Monroe; born in Tompkins Co., N. Y. in 1829; when 7 years of age, he removed with his parents to Knox Co., Ohio, where he married Miss M. D. CLEGHORN; she was born in Scotland. They moved to this county in 1872; have two children - Elizabeth A. and Joseph S. Mr. WRIGHT owns a well-improved farm of 260 acres of land. Is Republican, in politics; himself and family are members of the M. E.
