Hutchinson Carolina Louise Charlotte Brune Koppin and the Brune Family of Lippe Detmold and Jasper County, Iowa The Brune family, of the small village of Kirchhiede, located in Lippe Detmold, Germany, had lived there for several generations. Simon August Brune was born in 1807, the son of Casper Brune (1766-1844) and Anna Pothast, in Kirchhiede. He was a blacksmith and his family operated a blacksmith shop for many years. Simon married Wilhelmine Pleck in 1842, and they had three children, Hanne Wilhelmine, born 1843; Johanne Auguste, who died in infancy in 1845, and a son Simon Heinrich, born 1847. The senior Simon’s wife, Wilhelmine, died in 1851. Simon August Brune then married Henritte Busch in 1852 and the couple had 4 more children: Ernst Brune born in 1855, Anton Brune born in 1857, Augusta Brune born in 1863, Henritte born in 1865, and Carolina (Lena) Brune born in 1870. Simon August Brune, the head of the house and the owner of the blacksmith shop, died in 1879 and his wife died shortly after that. The date is not known, but it was before 1885. The oldest son, Simon Heinrich, from the first family, and his younger half brother, Ernst, continued to operate the blacksmith shop. From the first family there is nothing known of Hanne Wilhelmine. From the second family nothing is known of Anton; however, Henritte married Herman Blobaum. Her family all remained in Germany and her descendents are there today. In 1885, the brothers, Simon and Ernst, sold the blacksmith shop and made the decision to go to America. Simon, his wife Pauline, and their two children, along with his youngest sister Lena (Lena Brune Koppin 1870-1961) left from Bremen, Germany on board the Steam Ship Ems, and arrived in New York on April 18, 1885. Ernst and his wife, Henritte, and their two small children are also on board the Ems. Ernst and Simon and their families settle in Nebraska. It would be reasonable to assume that Lena who was only 14 years old would have lived with one of her brothers and since she was listed with Simon on the SS Ems manifest, it was probably that family. Both brothers lived all of their lives in Nebraska. Also from the second family, Augusta married Ernest Deppe (1857-1950) in Talle, Lippe Detmold, in March of 1886 and immediately sailed for America arriving in New York in April 1866. They settled in Jasper County, Iowa and have many descendants living in that area. It is assumed that Lena went to Jasper County, Iowa, to live with her older sister Augusta Deppe and her husband Ernst Deppe. On 14 December of 1889, at the age of 19, Lena marries Coonradt Kracht, a Jasper County, Iowa farmer who also was born in Germany. Lena had two children, Clara born in 1890 and Walter born in 1895. In January of 1898 Coonradt died from a tumor and a long illness. He was 55 years old. Lena then married Charles Koppin (1861-1941) in December of 1898. He was also a Jasper County, Iowa farmer who was born in Germany, She had seven more children: Bertha in 1899, Rose in 1901, Elsie 1903, Esther 1906, Gladys 1907, Goldie 1909, and Glen in 1911. Lena lived on the family farm until her death in 1961.
