She was born in Henry Co., Ind. in 1828; died in Greencastle March 19, 1876, leaving five children - Charles W., John M., Elizabeth S., Cassius R. and Lois V. Republican; member of the M. E. Church; belong to Des Moines Annual Conference, having preached the Gospel for twenty-five years in Iowa, but lost his health. Owned a fine farm in this township, which he sold after losing his wife. When he came here, there were but three houses in sight; only one house on the road to Des Moines. Has been Township Trustee and Supervisor. He is a Universalist and she is a Lutheran. He is also a member of the A., F. & A. M. Lodge, No. 59 in Newton, a member of Beaver Encampment at Hazelton, Penn., Geble Chapter, No. 12; Master of Grange three years; Knight Templar, No. 22; member of I. O. O. F., No. 73 at Newton. He run a saw-mill at Alma Grove, Adamson Grove, Atkins' Grove and Plummer's Grove; made all he has by his own exertions; formerly an engineer in the anthracite mines in Pennsylvania, running an engine to hoist coal. She was born in Virginia in 1828, died in March 1874, leaving six children - David H., Adeline, John A., Emery B., Ellis B., and Howard O. He married Eliza BENNET in September 1874. She was born in Tuscarawas Co., Ohio in 1834. Republican; she is a member of the Methodist Church. I. in August 1862; was detailed to regimental hospital for two years, and St. John's hospital seven months; cooked for his company three months at Fort Smith, thence to Fort Gibson two months, where he was mustered out in 1865. Republican; has held the office of Township Trustee; he is a member of the Christian Church. His brother-in-law, A. J. BERRY, came to this county at the same time, and at one time, owned 1,900 acres of land, in Sherman and Poweshiek Tps.; in 1868, he sold out and went to Texas; first to the Cherokee country, and then to the Chickasaw; he raised a large family, and at one time was considered the wealthiest man in the county. DOUD, M. P.; Colfax. DOUD, P. H.; Postmaster, Justice of the Peace and Notary Public, Greencastle; born in Vermont, Sept. 5, 1800. Moved to Tioga Co., Penn. in 1818, thence to Jefferson Co., Ohio in 1853, and to this county in 1854. Owns house and lot, and office, Block 13, lots 3 and 4, and a half interest in flouring mill with 1 1/2 acres of ground. He married Louisa HAYDEN in 1824. She was born in Hampshire Co., Mass. in 1804. They have five children - Helen M., Mary A., Eugene S., Adelia E. and Malcolm P. Mr. D. is a radical Republican. Has held offices of County Commissioner, and President of Achool Board. In 1859, he went to California, remaining there four years engaged in mining; his oldest son being there engaged in the wholesale dry goods business. Mrs. D.'s maiden name was WHITNEY. Mr. D. enlisted as Second Lieutenant in Co. B, 13th I. V. I. in 1861; killed in battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862; buried on battle field; leaving two children, Louisa K. and Edward L. EDWARDS, Milton M.; Farmer; Sec. 9; P. O. Greencastle; born in Pike Co., Missouri in 1820; came to Adams Co., Illinois in 1827; thence to Jasper Co. in 1847. Has 230 acres of land, valued at $45 per acre. Married Miss Ann HENDERSON in 1841. She was born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1821. They have eight children - Jonathan, George W., Charles C., James M., Mary A., Ellen E., Albert M., Armilda A. Democrat. Has held all of the School offices, Road Supervisor, Township Trustee. At the time of Mr. Edward's coming to Jasper Co., there were no settlers on the forks of the Skunk River and Indian Creek, except Mr. HAMLIN; it being necessary to go to Oskaloosa and Lynn Grove, ten miles, and at one time to Apple Grove by water. Owns 240 acres of land, valued at $30 per acre. Married Anna V. PHAYER in 1865. She was born in Guernsey Co., Ohio in 1838. They have three children - Minnie M., Samuel and James F. Is a Republican in politics. Came from Illinois with an ox team and about $100 in money. FISH, Edward G.; Farmer and proprietor of coal mines; Sec. 26; P. O. Colfax; born in Chambersburg, Penn. in 1837; came to Richland Co., Ohio in 1839; to this county in 1856. Owns his home farm of eighty acres, valued at $60 per acre; also, Black Heath Mines, fifty-seven acres of coal lands, with a bed of coal five feet eight to seven feet thick; discovered by himself, opened out and first coal raised August 10, 1876. Married Edith M. PEASE in 1864. She was born in Mansfield, Ohio, August 6, 1839. They have two children - Jessie M. and Gaylord B. Republican. Mr. FISH was one of the first prospecting party in the Territories of Oregon and Idaho, and passed with the first prospecting party from Colorado to Oregon; thence to Passerville, Idaho; was one of the party discovering the mines at Boise River. He with a party of others, laid out Boise City with ropes on a Sunday afternoon, each taking corner lots. Left Happy Camp with a party of twelve, and returned to Jasper CO. in August 1863. Greencastle; born in Baltimore, Md. in 1803; came to York Co., Penn. in 1806; thence to Wayne Co., Ind. in 1835, and to Jasper Co. in 1857. Has 150 acres of land, valued at $50. Married Miss Eltzabeth HILDENBRAND in 1830. She was born in York Co., Penn. in 1811, died Sept. 29, 1877, leaving thirteen children - Rebecca, Adam, Eliza, Savela, Benjamin, Ellanora, Elizabeth, Gemimah, Edward, Sarah, Mariah, Keziah and Gideon. Republican; Mr. and Mrs. F. were both members of the Evangelical Association. Mr. Fisher had two sons, William and Silas, in the late war; William died in service; Silas died in April 1876. When Mr. F. came to Jasper Co. he had no house and could get none; unloaded on the open prairie, without shelter. Mr. P. has the finest buildings in the county; came here in 1849; entered 160 acres in 1850; soon after sold out and went to California; remained till 1851; returned and bought the same land, and now has 568 acres, valued at $40 per acre, livery stable, vacant lot and two lots with dwellings in Colfax.
