Submitted to the USGenWeb Project Archives on June 2nd, 1998. ====================================================================== "1878 History of Jasper County, Iowa", pg. 426 & 427 & 428 40th Iowa Infantry The Fortieth Infantry was organized in September 1862, with John A. Garrett as Colonel. Arrived at Cairo, 19 Dec 1862, and thence to Columbus, KY, and there performed garrison duty until May 31st, when it moved down the Mississippi and up the Yazoo. June 6th, marched to Haines' Bluff, and remained until the surrender of Vicksburg. July 23rd took transports for Helena, AR. Went on Steele's celebrated expedition, bringing up, September 10th at Little Rock. March 23rd, went on Banks' Red River expedition, participating in numerous minor engagements with the enemy, and at Jenkins' Ferry was hotly engaged. August 24th, moved by rail to Brownsville, and participated in all the marches and maneuvers of the army until it was mustered out, at Fort Gibson, Cherokee Nation 2 Aug 1865. Garrett, Col. Jno.
