Downs Passes Away at Home of Daughter Mr. John H. Downs, 96, a veteran of the Civil war, passed away at 3:30 o'clock Monday morning at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred L. DeBrie at Hills. He had been ill for about two years. Mr. Downs had been a resident of Iowa City for the last 63 years. In his early youth he was a school teacher, later engaging in farming. Surviving him are the daughter, Mrs. Fred DeBrie and a son, Mr. Harry Downs of Haxton, CO, nine grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. His wife and one daughter preceded him in death. The remains will be at the McGovern funeral home until Wednesday morning. Funeral services will be held at the home of the daughter, Mrs. Debrie at Hills at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Burial will be in the Riverside cemetery. Dr. Harry D. Henry will be in charge. Additional Comments: (NOTE from Steve Dyke: The obit probably meant that JH Downs had lived in Iowa for the last 63 years. He had lived in Clearfield, Ringgold Co., IA for some time. His wife, Alice Elizabeth Cook Downs (1835 OH-1915 IA), died and was buried in Clearfield. His deceased daughter was Alice Elizabeth Downs Overholser, 1865 OH-1902 IA, and also died was buried in Clearfield. His daughter in Hills, Mrs. Fred DeBrie, was actually, Dinah E.
