Khairom M. Rummells, son of Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Rummells, 415 North Van Buren street, Iowa City, former residents of Muscatine county. Lt. Rummells was killed in action Jan. 16, 1945, in Belgium at the age of 23. Dr. L.L. Dunnington will officiate at the service. Burial will be in Memory Gardens with Masonic rites and military honors to be conferred at the grave. The body, which was returned to Iowa City Tuesday, is at Beckman's Funeral Home. Lt Rummells was a member of the 23rd regiment of the 2nd Infantry division and participated in the battle for Brest where he received the Purple Heart for wounds. He also was awarded the Infantry Combat Badge and the French Corde of Battle and his battalian received the Presidential Citation. Lt Rummells was born at Nichols on Oct 28, 1921. He was graduated from Iowa City high school in Iowa City in 1939 and from the University of Iowa in 1943 with a degree in commerece. While in college he was a member of Union Board, Theta Xi fraternity, and was a president of the University Y.M.C.A. He was employed for a time by the First Capital National bank. He was a member of the Methodist church and was a Mason. Receiving his commission as an officer at Ft. Benning, Ga., in September of 1943, Lt. Rummells was in instructor at Camp Fannin, Tex., and Camp Blanding, Ga., before going overseas in June of 1944. Surviving are his parents; a daughter, Dorothy Ann; a sister, Mrs. Dean C. Floyd of Cedar Rapids; and his paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Rummells of Nichols. The body of Lt. Rummells was returned to the United States on the USAT Lawrence Victory.
