MRS SHANNON, 72, OF NICHOLS, DEAD; FUNERAL TUESDAY NICHOLS, Ia., April 16 - (Special) - Mrs. Caroline Shannon, 72, died at her home at 8 o'clock Sunday morning. She had been in failing health for about two years but had been bedfast for only about three weeks. Caroline Hechtner was born April 3, 1862. She had been a resident of the Nichols community nearly all her life. She was married to Robert Thomas Shannon in Muscatine March 2, 1885. He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1918. The decedent was a member of the Nichols M. E. church. Surviving are three sons, Fredrick J. and Harry E. of Waterloo, and Lloyd W. of St. Louis and two daughters; Mrs. A. L. Lindee of Muscatine and Mrs. C. R. Metcalf of Nichols. She is also survived by five sisters, Mrs. William Sauer of Denver, Colo., Mrs. Eliza Slade of Des Moines, Mrs. Mary Hector of Avoca, Mrs. Emma Hector of Walnut and Miss Alfreda Hechtner of Jackson, Mich., and one brother, Charles Hechtner of Sac City and nine grandchildren. The body will remain at the home, where funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock with the Rev. H. C. Durse of Nichols M. E. church in charge. Interment will be in Oak Ridge cemetery at West Liberty. Obituary for Eliza (Hechtner) Slade, Died 2 Feb 1939. MOTHER OF D. M. FIRE CHIEF DIES --------- Mrs. Eliza Slade, 78, of 706 Riverview st., mother of Fire Chief Charles Slade, died Thursday at home. Death was due to cancer. Born in Princeton, Ill., Mrs. Slade later lived at Nichols, Ia., until she was married in 1877 to W. E. Slade, an Avoca, Ia., real estate man. Since her husband's death 12 years ago, Mrs. Slade had made her home with her son, Charles, in Des Moines. The elder Mr. and Mrs. Slade came to Des Moines in 1913. Surviving are two sisters, a brother; a daughter, Mrs. J. R. Johnston of Omaha, Neb.; son, Charles, and three grandchildren. Services will be at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at Hamilton's Funeral home. Obituary for Sophia Louisa Hechtner, Died 4 Mar 1896. PASSED AWAY --------- Sophia Hechtner Dies at the Home of E. Slade Sophia Louisa Hechtner was born at Fransburg, Germany, 1835, and was married to Fredrich Hechtner Oct. 28, 1852. She came to this country May, 1, 1852 and was a resident of Princeton Ill. for ten years. They then came to Muscatine county, Iowa, and have since resided in this state. Since the death of her husband she has made her home among her children. She leaves seven children; one son and six daughters to mourn her departure. In 1887 she was taken with a stroke of paralysis and since then has had many slight strokes until the final one came from which she never recovered. In this final illness she suffered four days and at last departed in peace Wednesday morning March 4, to join her beloved ones above. ---------- "Softly woo away her breath, Gentle Death! Obituary for Harriett Belle (Messenger) Hechtner, who died 22 Aug 1937. Mrs. Chas. Hechtner Called to Reward ----- Beloved Mother Had Been Ill For About A Year. -Funeral at Home. ----- Mrs. Chas. Hechtner passed away quietly and quite suddenly at her home in Coon Valley township last Sunday morning at the age of 67 years, 7 months and 14 days. She had been in failing health for about a year and her passing was not unexpected. Funeral services were held at the Hechtner home on Wednesday morning, in charge of Rev. Corwin Taylor. Pall-bearers were R. I. Wilson, N. J. Wilson, Chas. Brobeil, Wm. Kennedy, W. L. Friesner and J. Wilbur Neal. B. G. Wallace sang "Silver Threads Among the Gold" and "That Will Be Sunrise For Me." Burial followed at Oakland cemetery. Those present at the funeral from a distance were: Mr. and Mrs. Fred Range and Mr. and Mrs. Henry Range of Milford; Mr. and Mrs. Gus Range of Friend, Nebr.; Mrs. E. Slade, Chas. Slade, Mrs. Albert Lindee, of Des Moines; Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Metcalf of Nichols; Mrs. J. R. Johnston of Omaha; Mrs. and Mrs. John Taylor of Avoca; Miss Amelia Hector of Walnut; Mrs. W. K. Thomas and Miss Florence Thomas of Jefferson; Miss Alma Laumbach, Mrs. M. DeLaney, Mr. and Mrs. A. R. Huldeen, Mr. and Mrs. Albin Carlson and son Curtis, all of Odebolt; Mrs. H. O. Mendenhall of Greenville, and Mrs. Mark Cramer of Rockwell City. Harriett Belle Messenger, daughter of L. B. and Anna Messenger, was born near Muscatine on Jan. 8, 1870. In 1888 she was united in marriage, at Muscatine, to Charles Hechtner who survives her. To this marriage were born five children, two of them dying in infancy. In 1892 Mr. and Mrs. Hechtner moved to Sac county where they have since resided. She leaves to mourn her passing, besides her husband, a daughter, Mrs. Charles Brynteson, two sons, Lloyd and Raymond, and three grandhchildren, Harriett Brynteson, Loren Hechtner and Robert Hechtner, all of Sac City; also one brother, Wm. Messenger of Los Angeles. Mrs. Hechtner was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Sac City. Hers was a home loving heart. To her home always came first. In truth, she looked well to the "ways of her household."
