Hannibal Journal April 8, 1847
Steam Boat Accident. -- The steamer Simon Kenton, on her way down, when 
leaving Clarksville, about 11 o'clock, on Sunday night last, broke her 
connection pipe, killing a Mr. Mead, of Montrose, Iowa, and scalding the 2d 
engineer and four or five others.  She was towed down to St. Louis, the next 
day by the Ocean Wave.  We were there when they arrived, and enquired into the 
matter, and found that no blame can be attached to the officers of the boat, 
as the accident was of such a character that no prudence, on the part of 
anyone, could have foreseen or prevented it.
