Obituary of Jean Baptiste Dumenil of Lee County, Iowa Contributed to the Lee County GenWeb Archvies by Stephen Brian HODSON. _______________________ Obituary #1 of Jean Baptiste Dumenil Daily C--- D--- [illegible], Keokuk, Iowa January 31, 1900 JEAN BAPTISTE DUMENIL This morning at 9:30 o'clock occurred the death at the home of his son, J.N. Dumenil, No. 1002 Palean street, of Jean Baptiste Dumenil. Mr. Dumenil was a Frenchman by birth, but has resided in this country the greater part of his life. He formerly was engaged in the cooperage business about one and one-half miles west of the town of Charleston. Two of his sons are residents of this city, J.N. Dumenil, the well-known grocer, and John Dumenil, who is engaged in the feed and coal and wood business. There is also a son in California, one in Des Moines, one in Charleston, and two residing west of Argyle. He came to Keokuk about eight years ago, where he has been a resident ever since. Deceased was 90 years 1 month and 4 days old, and death was due to infirmities incident to old age. The funeral will occur Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. All friends are invited to attend the funeral. He was a man of many sterling qualities and had many warm friends who will hear of his demise with great regret. Obituary #2 of Jean Baptiste Dumenil Daily C--- D--- [illegible], Keokuk, Iowa February 1, 1900 JEAN BAPTISTE DUMENIL DEAD HE PASSED AWAY YESTERDAY MORNING AT 9:30 O'CLOCK AT THE HOME OF HIS SON January 31 at 9:30 o'clock a.m. occurred the death of Jean Baptiste Dumenil at the home of his son, J.N. Dumenil, No. 1002 Palean street. The deceased was ninety years, one month and four days of age at the time of his death, which was caused by infirmities due to old age. He died quietly and painlessly. Mr. Dumenil was a Frenchman by birth, but has lived in this country most of his life. He was a cooper by trade and for many years he operated a cooperage plant near Charleston. He came to this city about eight years ago and lived here up until the time of his death. He was born in Fremontville, Province of Lorraine, France on December 27, 1809. He left France in 1831 and landed in New York. In 1832 he moved west to Cincinnati, Ohio, living there about twelve years and worked [sic] at the cooper trade. In the spring of 1853 he moved to Keokuk and in the fall of that year bought the farm near Charleston, where he lived until recent years. He had been an Odd Fellow for nearly fifty years, was a member of the Charleston lodge and had been a representative in the grand lodge of Iowa. February 8, 1854 [sic - should be 1834], he married Miss Frances Ballay. Of the ten children born to them, eight are now living. L.V. and M.F. Dumenil live in Argyle, Mrs. Julia Slingerland of Charleston, Mrs. Marcia Conrad of Des Moines, Mrs. Frances Wolfenbarger and Miss Christine Dumenil of San Jose, Cal., and J.N. Dumenil and John Dumenil of this city. For the past year he has made his home in Keokuk. He was a man of many sterling qualities, honest and faithful in all things, and his many friends will regret to hear of his death. Mr. Dumenil was a man of good business ability and he made many friends by his courteous and affable treatment in all his business transactions.
