IaGenWeb Archives by Stephen Brian Hodson. -------------------------------------------------------------------- Obituary of John Baptist Dumenil Daily Gate City, Keokuk, Iowa January 21, 1929 JOHN DUMENIL 91 YEARS OLD DIES SUNDAY He Had Made Keokuk His Home Since 1867, Coming Here With His Parents From Cincinnati, Which Was His Birthplace John Dumenil, of 1002 Palean street, died Sunday morning, and funeral services will be held from the home at 1002 Palean street, tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock, with interment in Oakland cemetery. Mr. Dumenil was ninety-one years old and had lived in Keokuk since 1867. Among those who knew him best, his close friends and neighbors, he was held in high esteem for his kindly disposition and charitable acts. He will be greatly missed by the children of the neighborhood, whose especial friend he was. He was a native of Ohio, born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on September 19, 1838, the son of Jean Baptist [sic] and Francis Ballay [sic] Dumenil. In May 1853, he came with his parents to Keokuk where they lived for a short time, then moved on a farm near Charleston. In April of 1867, he moved to Keokuk, where he has since made his home. On December 27, 1861 he was married to Mary A. Fickle, who survives him. Five children were born to this union: two of whom are now living, Mrs. Frances Moon and Mrs. Grace Steele, and one grandchild, Mrs. Helen Steele Champeau. There are also three brothers and three sisters who survive. L.V. Dumenil, of Montrose; M.F. Dumenil, of Argyle; and J.N. Dumenil, of this city; Mrs. Julie [sic] Slingerland, of Charleston; Mrs. Marcia Conrad, of Des Moines; and Mrs. Frances Wolfenbarger, of San Francisco. Mr. Dumenil was a member of Puckechetuck Lodge of I.O.O.F. of Keokuk.
