Dumenil Slingerland Daily Gate City, Keokuk, Iowa November 4, 1929 MRS. SLINGERLAND IS LAID TO REST THIS AFTERNOON Funeral services for the late Mrs. Julia A. Slingerland were held this afternoon at the home, southwest of Charleston, with the Rev. Thomas F. Cooke, of the Baptist church of this city officiating. Burial was in the Charleston cemetery. Mrs. Slingerland was a sister of J.N. Dumenil of this city. Death came to Mrs. Slingerland Saturday afternoon, November 2, after an illness of a year’s duration. She was born April 13, 1841, in Cincinnati, Ohio, and was the daughter of Jean Baptist [sic] and Frances Ballay [sic] Dumenil. In May of 1853, they moved to Keokuk and then after a short time here moved to a farm at Charleston where she has since made her home and where her death occurred. Her marriage to John Hazard Slingerland occurred September 28, 1862. His death occurred May 6, 1926. Three children were born to them, two surviving, William Corson [sic] Slingerland, of Pine Bluff, Wyoming; and a daughter, Mrs. Nera May, at home. There were two sisters and three brothers who also survive. They are Mrs. Marcia Conrad, of Des Moines; and Mrs. Frances Wolfenberger [sic], of San Francisco; and L.V. Dumenil, of Montrose; M.F. Dumenil, of Argyle; and J.N. Dumenil, of Keokuk. Mrs. Slingerland was a member of the Tesson Rebekah Lodge No. 93, of Montrose. Obituary #2 of Julia A. Slingerland passed away Saturday noon at 12:30 o’clock, November 2, 1929, at her home 1 1/2 miles west of Charleston. Mrs. Slingerland was born April 13, 1841 in Cincinnati, O., the daughter of Jean Baptiste and Frances Ballay Deumenil [sic]. In May 1853 she came with her parents to Keokuk where they lived for a short time, then moved to a farm near Charleston where her death occurred. Mrs. Slingerland was united in marriage to John Hazard Slingerland, September 28, 1862. Mr. Slingerland preceded his wife in death May 6, 1926. Three children were born to this union, one dying when quite young. The two surviving children are William Carson Slingerland, of Pine Bluff, Wyoming, and Mrs. Nera May at the home farm. Mrs. Slingerland was a member of the Baptist church and the Rebecca Lodge of Montrose. There are three brothers surviving, L.V. Deumenil of Montrose, M.F. Deumenil of Argyle, and J.N. Deumenil of Keokuk. Two sisters, Mrs. Marcia Conrad of Des Moines and Mrs. Frances Wolfenbarger of San Francisco. Funeral services were held from the home Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock; Rev. Cook of Keokuk officiating.
