Fitzgerald Indianapolis, IND State of Iowa County of Linn In the claim of Daniel Allard on this 1st day of March 1883, personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace in and for the County and State aforesaid E.B. Osmer of Independence P O in the county of Buchanan and the State of Iowa who, being duly sworn according to law, on oath declares as follows. That he was late member of Company E, 37th Reg’t Ills Vols., and ranked as private and that said Daniel Allard was a member of said organization, and who, while in the said service and line of duty as a soldier, at or near a place called Lamine River State of Mo on or about the ____ day of Nov 1862 >From hard marching contracted piles by carrying 100 pounds of ammunition [?] on a single waste-belt- said disability still continues unfitting him for the performance of manual labor. And he further says that his knowledge of the above facts is obtained from the following sources, viz: I was on the same march and know the above statement to be true- and that he has no interest nor concern in this matter. I, Ge. S. Stearns, Clerk of the District Court, in and for said County (a Court of Record using a seal of office and having common law jurisdiction,) do hereby certify that J. S. Anderson before whom the foregoing affidavit appears to have been made, was at the time of taking of the same, a legal acting Justice of the Peace within and for the County of Linn, and was duly Elected and qualified according to law, and authorized to take acknowledgements and administer oaths in said County, and that I am well acquainted with his handwriting, and verily believe the signature purporting to be his is genuine. Well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn declare in relation to aforesaid case as follows: That he has been well and personally acquainted with Daniel Allard for 21 years and that I was private in Co A 37th Ill Infantry- and knew Daniel Allard for about six months - from August 1861 to Jany 1862- that when I first knew him in 1861 & 2 he was in grave health as far as I knew. I also knew that in the months from Otterville to Springfield Mo. That the same Allard was along- ……? General Affidavit State of Iowa County of Linn: Personally appeared John D. King and W.E. Hewitt (of Marion, Linn Co., Iowa) of Cedar Rapids P.O. County of Linn State of Iowa, who, being duly sworn upon their oaths declare as follows: That they were neighbors of and well acquainted with Daniel Allard late of Co. E 37th Ill Vols from the time he came home from the army in Jany 1862 up to about the month of Dec 1874 during all of which time he has been suffering from Piles. And it is their opinion that by reason of said disability he has been each year disabled for manual labor to the following extent. Viz: about two thirds of the time and some of the time more- and they further say that their knowledge of the above facts is obtained from the following sources, viz: personal acquaintance and near neighbors, and that they have no interest or concern in this matter. County of Linn, State of Iowa who, being duly sworn upon his oath declares as follows: that he was late a member of Co E 37th Reg. Ill Inf and was discharged there from in February 1862, and that he again enlisted in August 1862 in Co D 20th Reg’t Wisconsin Infantry and that he was discharged from said service July 14, 1865 since which time he has served in no military or naval service of U.S. Daniel Allard 8 May 1884 General Affidavit State of Iowa, County of Linn In the matter of Daniel Allard N.D. Cert. No. 292063 Co E. 37th Reg’t Ill Inft On this 26 day of June, A.D. 1899, personally appeared before me Clerk of Superior Court in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths Daniel Allard aged 80 years, a resident of Cedar Rapids, Iowa in the County of Linn and State of Iowa well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: At this late day, and aged and infirm as I am, I am unable to forward further evidence than I have already done as to my disabilities. I have had 15 medical examinations – eight or ten of these on my claim for disability or increase, and still arm?? ? call for more evidence. This I am unable to give: only this: I was a while serving in Co D, 20th Wis Inf –in Post Hospital at Springfield, MO in fall of 1862, treated for chronic diarrhea – and was in Post Hospital at Brownsville, Texas in March, 1864, treated there for Scurvy and Fever. I [?] rheumatism in the Spring of 1860 while on the march by camping on low wet ground. This in the state of Missouri and increased by exposure during the siege at Vicksburg. I am now quite aged and infirm, and [?] as it were on [?]. [?] that this my long delayed claim may be paid, on the evidence now on file. …. Daniel Allard To All Whom it may Concern Know Ye, That Daniel Allard a Private of Captain Phineas B Rusts Company (E) 37th Regiment of Ill Vols who was enrolled on the 20th day of August one thousand eight hundred and sixty one to serve three years is hereby discharged from the service of the United States, this 20th day of January 1862, at Lamine Crossing by reason of incapacity for military duty, from a necrosis of the tibia and Prolapsus Ani- No objection to his being re-enlisted is known to exist unless his disease is incurable. Said Daniel Allard was born in Genesee County in the state of New York, is forty one years of age. Six feet x inches high, light complexion, blue eyes, grey hair, and by occupation when enrolled a farmer. Allard, widow of Daniel Allard, Co E, 37th Reg, Ill Inf Wid No 724.267 On this 19th day of Nov A.D. 1900, personally appeared before me, Notary Public, in and for the aforesaid County, duly authorized to administer oaths, Sarah B. Allard, aged 80 years, a resident of Cedar Rapids in the County of Linn and the State of Iowa, well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: I am claimant in above cited claim. I am now upwards of eighty years of age, and awhile without income or means of support. I do not own or possess any Real Estate or personal property-save a few household [?] – nor do I have any Stocks, bonds, or investments of any kind, nor is there any person legally bound for my support, nor has there been since the death of my husband, Daniel Allard, in July last. I have no income, either by the month or by the year. There was no prior marriage either of soldier or myself, but I am unable to prove that because of my great age, and the difficulty of finding persons now living who were acquainted with us when we became of marriageable age, more than sixty years ago, and I ask that you remove this “no prior marriage” clause or part you ask me to prove, as you are safe not assuming it anyway, as we were both young in the year of our marriage, in 1837, and had no more than reached marriageable age at that time, as I was not seventeen years of age and soldier was not twenty. Allard, widow of Daniel Allard, Co E, 37th Reg, Ill Inf No 724.267 On this 5th day of December, A.D. 1900, personally appeared before me A Notary Public, in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths, Mary Bowes aged 76 years, a resident of Janesville in the County of Rock and the State of Wisconsin well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: I am a sister of the above named applicant. I have known her ever since she was a little child. I have known Daniel Allard her deceased husband since their marriage and for about a year previous to thereto. Daniel Allard was about 19 years of age at the time he married my sister Sarah B Allard, and she was younger than he. Neither of them were ever married previously to this said marriage. They were married at the town of Wayne, Ashtabula Co., Ohio where she was born. I have known them both since that time and neither have been married previously or since exact as I have stated. I knew Daniel Allard since he was about eighteen years of age. Her Post office address is Cedar Rapids Iowa and Janesville, Wisconsin Mrs. Mary Bowes General Affidavit of Sarah S Ingraham [wife of Nathan D. Ingraham, Sarah’s Brother] State of Iowa, County of Linn In the matter of Sarah B., widow of Daniel Allard Co E, 37th Reg., Ill Inf Widow No. 724.267 On this 23 day of Nov, A.D. 1900, personally appeared before me Notary Public in and for the aforesaid County duly authorized to administer oaths Sarah S Ingraham, 56 years, a resident of Cedar Rapids, in the County of Linn and the State of Iowa well known to me to be reputable and entitled to credit, and who, being duly sworn, declared in relation to aforesaid case as follows: I am sister in law of claimant, Sarah B Allard and have been well and intimately acquainted with both her and her late husband, Daniel Allard, for upwards of thirty six years, and I am satisfied from my acquaintance with them that neither of them were previously married, as had they been I would, from my intimate acquaintance with them have learned of any former marriage. I know that soldier and claimant were never divorced, but lived together as man and wife until death of soldier, July 31, 1900, and I know she has not remarried since death of soldier, and that she is to all appearance near her last and her claim should be made special because of her age and physical and ? ?
