Architect (Photo - a more recent one.) William Jay Brown __William Jay Brown, 163 Thompson drive SE, a practicing architect in Cedar Rapids for nearly 60 years, died Wednesday after a short illness, He was 91. __Born Dec. 10, 1878, in Urbana, Ill., Mr. Brown came to Cedar Rapids Jan. 1, 1910, to join his brother, Frederick G. Brown, in an architectual firm. His brother died the following year, but Mr. Brown continued the firm. __For more than 40 years, Mr. Brown practiced alone. He was joined in May, 1953, by Edward H. Healey, and Carl V. Bock joined the partnership in May, 1960. __C. R. Projects __During his most active years in Cedar Rapids, Mr. Brown was instrumental in design of such structures as the Memorial coliseum, the Consistory building, what is now the World theater, the Cedar Rapids Country club, St. James Methodist church, the former Elks club, and the former Knights of Pythias building. __He also participated in design and construction projects on both Coe and Cornell campuses. __Mr. Brown served with the army at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Md., and Frankfort Arsenal, near Philadelphia, during World war 1. __A graduate of the University of Illinois, he was a member of First Presbyterian church, Cedar Rapids Country Club, Elks club, Mt. Hermon Masonic lodge and the American Institute of Architects, and was a former president of the Iowa Architects Assn. __Served on Boards. __He had served on the boards of the Cedar Rapids Art Assn. and the YMCA, and had been active in Boy Scout work. __He was married to the former Isabel Howell Sept. 8, 1914, in Cedar Rapids. __Surviving in addition to his wife are two sons, David H. Brown of Baton Rouge, La., and Dr. William J. Brown, jr., of Wellesley, Mass.; a daughter, Mrs. Paul C. Clovis, jr., Winnetka, Ill., and seven grandchildren. __Services: Turner chapel east at 3 p.m. Friday by Dr. Joseph E. McCabe and the Rev. John S. Shew. Burial: Oak Hill cemetery. Friends may call at the chapel until 2:30 p.m. Friday. Anniversary Events Honor W. J. Browns __Mr. and Mrs. William Jay Brown, 163 Thompson drive SE, were honored at several parties this weekend in celebration of their golden wedding anniversary. __A cocktail and buffet party was given Saturday evening at the Cedar Rapids Country club by the couple's two sons and daughter and their families, Mr. and Mrs. David Howell Brown of Baton Rouge, La., Dr. and Mrs. William Jay Brown of Wellesley, Mass., and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Curtis Clovis, jr., of Winnetka, Ill. __Mr. and Mrs. Edward H. Healey, 2500 White Eagle Trail SE, were hosts at a brunch Saturday morning, with the Carl V. Bocks as co-hosts. __Mrs. R. H. Pickford of 357 Forest drive SE entertained at a family buffet party Friday in honor of Mr. and Mrs. Brown. __Out-of-town guests here for the anniversary parties were Mr. and Mrs. Paul Curtis Clovis of Winnetka, Mr. and Mrs. Dale Rowe and Mrs Alvin Rowe of Galesburg, Ill., and Mrs. Stuart Davis of Des Moines. __Mr. and Mrs. Brown were married Sept. 8, 1914, in Cedar Rapids.
