Lieut. Jacob Schmidt 

Cedar Rapids, Iowa 

Born in Toronto, Canada, 1854. Volunteered in 1908. Bandmaster. Overseas. Was 
eight years with the 10th Canadian Fusileers.

Jake Schmidt, Noted 
Band Leader, Dead 
__Jacob Schmidt, 72 years old for many years one of the best known band 
conductors and music teachers in eastern Iowa and noted for his leadership of 
military bands, was found dead in his room in the Poore building, 408 Second 
avenue, at 1:45 p.m. today. 
__Schmidt died soon after retiring last night, it is believed by Dr. R. A. 
Vorpahl, coroner. He had not been seen since Monday and folk who had gone to 
his room to see him yesterday and today had found the door locked. One of the 
last to try the door was B. L. Wick, his attorney, who with Schmidt's physician 
was making arrangements for him to enter the Speedway hospital at Maywood, Ill. 
__Mr. Schmidt had expressed a desire to go there because old time friends, who 
had been with him in the Chicago Symphony orchestra, were there it was said. He 
had been in poor health for several years. He suffered of bronchitis and 
kindred ailments. 
__"Jake" as everyone knew him in Cedar Rapids, taught music, directed 
orchestras and conducted bands here for nearly forty years. 
__He won considerable notice during the World war as the oldest band conductor 
in the American army overseas. He went over as conductor of the 133rd infantry 
band of the Thirty-fourth division. Previously he had directed the Fifty-third 
infantry band of the Iowa National Guard and later conducted the First infantry 
band. When the regiment went to the Mexican border, "Jake" went with it and 
when the World war broke out, despite his age, he followed the colors. 
__After the war, Mr. Schmidt directed the Hanford post band and the municipal 
band and at times was leader of the Shrine musicians. 
__Realizing his illness, Mr. Schmidt had made arrangements to dispose of his 
property. His music was left to the Shrine band, his books go to the Masonic 
library, it is said. 
__Mr. Schmidt had no relatives here but there are several brothers and sisters 
in Canada, it is said. He had lived alone in Greene's opera house and later in 
the Poore building for years. 
__Mr. Schmidt's death was discovered by Dr. Thomas Suchomel, city physician, 
who has an office in the same building. When folk who had been to see "Jake" 
got no response, Esther Long, employed in Dr. Suchomel's office, opened the 
door and then called the doctor.

__Schmidt Funeral. 
__Funeral services for Jacob Schmidt, noted musician and band leader, will be 
held in the Turner chapel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. W. W. Argow will 
officiate and Masonic services will be conducted by Mount Hermon lodge. Burial 
will be in Oak Hill cemetery. 
__Mr. Schmidt was a graduate of the Toronto Conservatory of Music and also of 
the Buffalo conservatory. He came to Cedar Rapids in 1884 and had been a 
resident here since. He is survived by three brothers, George and John, of 
Toronto, Canada; Fred, and two sisters, Mrs. Mary Uptegrove and Mrs. Pheobe 
Wells, both of Toronto.

__Kindly, lovable "Jake" Schmidt has left us and his familiar smile and genial 
manuerisms will be missed by those who daily met and conversed with him upon 
many topics. He lived more then his alloted time and passed away suddenly and 
quietly without a friend near in his rooms in the Poore building. He was a 
remarkable man in many respects. A reader and a student, his enjoyment came 
from good books and music. His record as a patriot and his volunteer service 
overseas during the World War when he was 65 years of age was one of the 
outstanding and remarkable incidents of a wonderful career. His loyalty to the 
American Federation of Musicians and the local union will endure in the records 
of that organization.

Schmidt Gives His 
Library To Shrine 
__Late Bandmaster's Will Being Probated 
__"I leave to El Kahir temple, Mystic shrine, of which I am a member, my entire 
band library and cathedral chimes." specified the late Jacob Schmidt, noted 
Cedar Rapids bandmaster, in his will, which was being probated in district 
court here. 
__"I leave to the Iowa Masonic library of Cedar Rapids four book cases with 
contents. To Frank Ward, superintendent of Sunshine mission, I give my Weisner 
piano to be used in connection with the mission." 
__Mr. Schmidt bequeathed his violin library of music to Mrs. E. Richardson, 
Mrs. Florence H. Taylor and Edwin Foster. He gave his three violin bows to the 
same persons. 
__His oil paintings of Carl Weber were bequeathed in the following order. Two 
of first choice to B. L. Wick, three of second choice, to Dr. E. Carmichael, 
and three of third choice to Don Cook. 
__He specified that his lot in Oak Hill cemetery should not cost more than 
$400, the monument not to exceed $600, and funeral expenses not to be more than 
$500. 
__The remainder of the estate went to brothers and sisters. Heirs included 
George Schmidt, John Schmidt, Mary Grove, Phoebe Wells, Toronto, Canada, and 
Fred Schmidt, United States. Dr. Roy K. Keech was named executor.
