Ensign Anthony F. Soukup * 

Cedar Rapids, Iowa 

Born Cedar Rapids, Iowa, July, 1883. Son of Rosalie and Anthony Soukup. 
Graduate of Iowa State College. Enlisted June, 1918, U. S. Navy. Died on U. S. 
S. North Carolina, December 21, 1918, off Brest, France.

__Ensign Soukup Died On Board North Carolina 
__Message Received Late This Afternoon Gives Confirmation of the Earlier 
Telegram. 
__FIRST REPORT CONFUSING 
__It was Ensign Anthony Soukup who died at sea on the cruiser South Carolina, 
according to a telegram received from New York City late this afternoon. 
__Ensign Soukup enlisted in the spring of 1915, at Great Lakes, Ill., and he 
was sent to Annapolis, Md., for training. He received his commission there. 
Born in Cedar Rapids, he attended the local schools, and was graduated from 
Cedar Rapids high school. He was graduated from Iowa State college at Ames as a 
civil engineer. He was born thirty-four years ago. Besides his father and a 
brother, a sister, Miss Anna Soukup, teacher at Van Buren school survives. 
__Owing to a confusing telegram received here, Anthony Soukup, 518 B avenue 
east, and Frank Soukup, 639 North First street west, are perplexed as to which 
of them is the father of the young man who died while aboard the North 
Carolina, bound for this country, and whose body arrived in New York Monday. 
__Each has a son named Anthony in the service, and each is believed to have 
been aboard the North Carolina. The son of Frank Soukup was wounded in France, 
and according to word from him he was to have sailed from there in December. 
Ensign Anthony Soukup, jr., the son of Anthony Soukup, is known to have sailed 
on the North Carolina. The last heard from him was a card written to his 
cousin, Dr. Joseph B. 
Soukup, on Dec. 16. At this time the cruiser was bound for France. 
__The telegram relative to the death was received by Edward Soukup, a brother 
of Ensign Soukup, and it said that the body was to arrive in New York late 
Monday. It asked if it was desired that there be given a military funeral in 
New York, or if the body should be sent to Cedar Rapids. Mr. Soukup replied 
that the body should be sent here, and asked for details concerning the death, 
and the correct name. 
__In the meantime the two fathers are anxiously awaiting further word from New 
York that they may know to whom the bereavement has come.
