They emigrated to the United States in 1846 and first settled at Buffalo, N.Y. They came to Louisa Co. in 1854. The mother d. in 1873. They had the following children: George d. 1910; Christian, d. age 37; Rosina m. Fed Kreiner of Louisa Co.; Sarah m. John Keck of Joy, Ill.; Charles; Jacob; Madgeline m. Mathias Bissinger; and Sophia of Council Bluffs, Ia. On the 18 September 1861, Charles Fath m. Charlotte Dollarhide, who was born in Wapello on the 22 February 1845, the daughter of Austin and Maery (Bedwell) Dollarhide, natives of Kentucky, coming to Louisa Co. in the 1840's . Mrs. Dollarhide d. in 1845, following which Mr. Dollarhide enlisted and went to the front in the Mexican War and never returned. They only had two children: jane who d. in 1906, the wife of Thomas Allen of Fairfield, Ia; and Charlotte. Mr. and Mrs. Fath had six children: Emma d. 16 December 1910 at the age of 38, wife of Howard Marshall, of Gunnison Co., Colorado; Ida b. June 1867, m. Howard Leyda, a printer, of Chicago; Leroy A. b. 22 February 1880; and Guy M. b. 25 April 1883. Foster, Solomon D. (p. 329) Solomon D. Foster was born in Concord Twp., Louisa Co., Iowa on the 5 July 1865, the son of Harrison and Sarah (Reynolds) Foster, both natives of Ohio, where they were married and shortly thereafter came to Louisa Co. The father died in 1868, the mother in 1900. There were eight children in the family. The others were: May; Marion; Lydia d. 1907, m. James Henderson; Fannie m. Samuel Bushong; Jane m. Thomas Cross; Henry H.; and A. Jackson. In September, 1890, Solomon D. Foster married Hattie V. Files, who was born in Johnson Co. in July 1869, the daughter of James M. and Mary (Bowman) Files. T he parents were both natives of Ohio, but were married in Johnson Co.. There were eight children in the Files family, namely: Hattie V. (above); Charley; Estella; Myrtle; Ray; Wayne; Leo; and Blanche who d. age 4 months. Mr. and Mrs. Foster also had eight children: Myrtle b. 10 August 1891; Jesse M. b. 7 June 1893; Audrey E. b. 15 February 1895; Cecil H. b. 9 Novmeber 1898; Fern I. b. 30 July 1900; Herald W. b. 14 June 1906 and Carl E. b. 28 August 1908. Fox, David (p. 332) David Fox was born in southern Canada on 22 December 1846, the son of Charles and Hannah (Lefler) Fox who moved to Rock Island Co., Illinois in 1846. The father d. 1866 and the mother in 1879. They had eleven children: Mary; John k. in Civil War; Simon E.; Sophie and William who died in infancy; Samuel B.; Frank; Charles; George; Fannie; and David, our subject. On 1 January 1867, Mr. Fox married Martha Hahn, daughter of John and Serena (Mead) Hahn. Her father was a native of Germany and the mother of Missouri. She was one of thirteen children: Jerry; Anna m. Colman Brayton of Illinois City; Peter; John; William; Robert of Polk Co.;Hiram; Rebecca; Adam and two who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs Fox had seven children: Belle, Serena; James; Leonard; Della m. Frank Duncan; Elmer; and Virgie. Frazier Frazier, Elliott (p. 42) Elliot Frazier was born 28 February 1838 in Darke Do, Ohio, the son of Alvis and Martha (Crommel) Frazier. The father a native of N.C. and the mother of Pennsylvania. They moved to Louisa CO. in 1856 where the mother died in 1876. The father died in 1992. There were six children in the family, but only the subject and his sister Mary m. A. Farmer of S.D. survived until 1912. Mr. Frazier was married on the 12 of May 1870 to Nancy J. Patton, who was born in Indiana in 1840, the daughter of Hsuton and Esther Patton. They had four children: Jessie; Teresa m. J. W. Whitham of Morning Sun; Charles; and Frank. Gabriel, E. K. (p. 213) E.K. Gabriel was born 30 October 1853, in Muscatine Co., the son of Conrad and Susan (Kegg) Gabriel. The father was born in Hessen Darmstadt, Germany and the mother in Pennsylvania. After his wife died, the father moved from Muscatine Co. to Louisa Co. On 5 March 1876 E.K. Gabriel married C.A. Bretz, who was born in Louisa Co., a daughter of Peter and Cathrine (Cutkomp) Bretz, both of whom were born in Germany. Mr. Bretz had settled in Louisa Co. about 1855. Mr. and Mrs. Gabriel had five children: L.R.; C.O.; Lydia G.; R.O. and C.E. (Sorry only initials of the men provided in the history book). Garrett Garrett, Alexander.M. (p. 192) Alexander M. Garrett was born in Concord Twp., Louisa Co. on 31 March 1857, the son of Barton and Elizabeth (Finley) Garrett, natives of Floyd Co., Ky and Ohio Respectively. The former came to Iowa in 1852 and the latter in 1839. The mother died 5 May 1870 and the father died 22 November 1910. Alexander M. had brothers: Ulric; James M. and Barton, who d. in 1867 age two. The father remarried in 1873 to Susanna M. Dodder, a native of New Jersey, by whom he had a son Joseph H. b. in 1874. Ms. Dodder came to Iowa in 1836 and lived near Grandview. Alexander married 8 October 1878 to Laura S. Dill, who was born at Todd Town, a daughter of Solomon and Elizabeth J. (Fowler) Dill. Her father was physician. She was the younger of two daughters, her sister Mary m. John Conlin a carpenter and contractor of Oneida, KS. Her mother died in1869. The father remarried to Mary Mickey by whom he had two more children: Bessie, m. A.M. Reynolds of Chicago; and Georgiana m. W.M> Coats of Hoxie, Arkansas. Mr. and Mrs. Garrett had three children, namely: J. Bertram b. 5 January 1880; Elizabeth J. b. 26 January 1881 m. E.R. McCormick; and A. May b. 25 January 1883 m. F.S. Barnes. Garrett. H. W. (p. 534) H.W. Garrett was born 8 July 1862 in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of Abel and Elizabeth (Felker) Garrett. The father was a native of England and the mother of Kentucky, where they were married. There were seven children in their family: George of Friendship, Wisconsin; Robert of Laredo, Missouri; Edward; Herbert W., our subject; Clarence of Joplin, Missouri; Frank; and Julia. On the 4 January 1884, he married Ella Hicklin, born 12 December 1859 in Brunswick, Missouri, the daughter of William and Catherine (Bullion) Hicklin, who were natives of Kentucky and Illinois, respectively. To this union was born five children: Robert b. 12 July 1889; Arthur b. 13 December 1889; Joe b. 30 April 1892; William and Walter, both died in infancy. Gast Gast, Farrie (p. 309) Farrie Gast was born in Louisa County on 17 February 1870, the son of Harmon and Sarah (Stineman) Gast. The father came from Germany and the mother from Ohio, but they were married in Iowa. His mother died 15 April 1906. THere were four children in the family. The others were: Margaret m. H. E. Lang; Rush F.; and Ora E. He was married 6 January 1898 to Maggie Kallenbarger, b. 18 February 1866, in Louisa Co., the daughter of G.D. and Sophia (Winkleman) Kallenbarger, the father a native of Germany and the mother of Ohio. Mrs. Kallenbarger d. 1888. Her siblings were: Elizabeth and Amanda, twins, Elizabeth d. age 27 and Amanda at age 18;; G. Adam d. when he was forty; Nettie m. John Idelbaugh of Grandvies; Annie m. Harry Buster; Daniel F. d. August 10, 1910 age 28 yrs. old. Mr. and Mrs. Gast had six children: Ruth M. b. 18 Novmeber 1898; one died in infancy; May E. b. 1 February 1901; Paul H. b. 10 April 1903; Floyd H. b. 31 October 1905; and D.F. b. 18 June 1906. Gates Gates, S.E. (p. 10) S.E. Gates was born 9 May 1850 in Mercer Co., Illinois, the son of Seth and Lydia (Andrews) Gates. The fathere was a native of New York and the mother of Massachusetts. They located in Mercer Co. in 1846 where the father died in 1876 and the mother moved to Missouri in 1878. S.E. Gates came to Louisa County in 1871. he married twice !) Mary E. Ogle of Keithsburg, Illinois in June 1871. they had five daughters: Zoe E. m. Allen Russell of Louisa Co.; Estella, m. William Williams of Missouri; Cordie m. James O. Waterhouse of Oakville; Bessie, m. Edward C. Waterhouse, also of Oakville; and Fernie. Mrs. Gates d. 16 January 1898 and on the 22 July 1903, Mr. Gates m. Mrs. Edith (Wycoff) Cowan, at native of Adair Co., Iowa. By this marriage he had two more daughters: Lillian C. and Everetta Uvista. Gilbert Gilbert, August (p. 59) August Gilbert was born 22 October 1821 in Germany and came to America in the 1850's. He married Anna Achardt, 2 May 1866, a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Smith) Achardt. The parents were natives of Germany and spent their entire lives there. Mr. and Mrs. Gilbert had four children: August, Jr., Chicago, Illinois; Charles, Ohio; Carrie m. William G. Roberts of Columbus Junction: and William. Gipple Gipple, E.B. (p. 387) Edward B. Gipple was born 23 June 1859 in Louisa Co., the son of George W. and Mary Ellen (Brooks) Gipple. The parents were natives of Pennsylvania, came to Iowa in 1845. They lived at Letts, Iowa. Edward Gipple married Lona Metzgar 27 December 1882, the oldest child of Nathan and Sally (Felencer) Metzger. The other Metzgar children were:Ella m. Frank Chamberlain; Jacob; Simon: David; Levi: and Edward. The children of Edward and Lona were: Charles; George; Glennie m. L. Huston; Harrison; Vernon; Hitlton; and Pearl. Gipple, L.U. (p. 501) Lincoln U. Gipple was born 3 March 1866, the son of George W. and Mary (Brooks Gipple, both born near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. They came to Iowa in 1852 and bought land in Grandview twp., Louisa Co. The mother was 84 in October 1910 and the father was 84 on the 4 May 1911. Their children were: Emma m. Mark Sharp of Fall City, Nebraska; Anna m. L. Hudler of S.D.; Cynthia m. A.H. Dalahide of Audubon Co, Iowa; Charles, Letts; Edward B.; Harvey livedin Bentonville, Arkansas; Carrie m. John Holtz of Muscatine; and Link N. Mr. Gipple married 114 June 1894 to Alice Kerr, b. 8 October 1871 in Muscatine Co, the daughter of David and Mary (Williams) Kerr. Her father was a native of Ohio and her mother of Indiana. She had two brothers, Frank and Walter. Mr. and Mrs. Gipple had three children: Vivian b. 2 February 1895; ORval b. 13 March 1898 and Wldon b. 17 August 1899. Gipple, T.J. (p. 224) Thomas Jeffferson Gipple was born 15 July 1859, the son of J.S. and Margaret (Hoover) Gipple, natives of Pennsylvania, who came to Louisa Co. in 1850. On the 24th April 1884, Mr. Gipple was married to Elizabeth Auracher, who was born in Northampton Co., Pennsylvania, the daughter of Christian and Mary (Buzzard) Auracher, the father a native of Germany and the mother of Pennsylvania. Mr. Auracher died 23 September 1879 and his wife on 21 July 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Gipple had four childrne: Frank V.; Joseph H.; Winnie m. L.B. Hall; and Taylor J. Glenn Glenn, G.W. (p. 233) George W. Glenn was born 17 August 1867 in Lincolnshire, England, the son of George and Mary (Thurlby) Glenn. The father came to America in 1867 leaving his family behind until he could bring his wife and two children over in 1869. There were eight children: Rosie; George W.; Thomas H.; Lizzie m. Thomas F. Kauffman of McLean, Illinois; Annie m. S.A. Meyers of Buchanan Co., Iowa; Emma m. John Kauffman of Rolfe, Iowa; Minnie m. M.C. Boyce of Bloominton, Illinois; and Lilly m. W. H. Nobble of Rolfe. On the 16 of March 1893, Mr. Glenn married Matilda E. Meyers, daughter of Simon and Julia (Coleman) Meyers. She was one of ten children, the others being: Fred; Mary m. John Smith of Andrew Co., Missouri; Theodore; Julia m. Gus H. Tugle of S.D.; Samuel A.;Edward;one died in infancy; Albert; and Edith m. Edward Miller. Grafe Grafe, Theodore (p. 477) Theodore Grafe was born in April 1841 in Hanover, Germany and came to the United States in 1870. He died 27 December 1899. He married twice 1) Unknown 2) Elizabeth Avesing on the 15 October 1875, daughter of Harmon and Gertrude (Manka)Avesing, both natives of Germany. Her siblings were: Dena m. Frank Rath of Goshen, Washington; Henry, Muscatine; Herman, Germany; George, Kansas City, Missouri; August of Columbus Jct. and one died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Grafe had seven children: Clara; Walter of San Francisco; Mamie m. William Schlung of S.D.; Theodore, San Francisco; Esther; and two infants. Graham Graham, G. W. (p. 32) George Wilson Graham was born 13 October 1872, the son of B.I. and Ann (Blackburn) Graham. His paternal grandfather was Wilson Graham, a pioneer settler of Louisa County. He had the following siblings: Samuel R. b. 1 July 1875; Frank R. b. 20 May 1880; and Jennie M. b. 12 April 1885. Graves Graves, A.D. (p.263) A.D. Graves born 31 December 1866, was the son of G.W. and Sarah E.(Fairbanks) Graves. he married Carrie Spitsnogle, who was born in Louisa co. on the 23 February 1870, the daughter of John and Sarah (Shaw) Spitsnogle,the father a native of Indiana and the mother of Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Graves had five children: Nellie M. b. 27 July 1895; Merle Lea b. 11 March 1898; Gladys L. b. 2 November 1900; and Carrie A. b. 14 April 1909. Graves, G. W. (p. 262) The Graves family first settled in Louisa County in 1836. G. W. was born 13 November 1835 in Ashtabula Co., Ohio, the son of John and Amelia Graves, natives of Connecticut. He married Sarah E. Fairbanks, a native of Ohio in June 1856. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1842 and her mother died in 1846. Her father was a veteran of the Civil War. Mr. and Mrs. Graves had eight children: Charles H.; Cassie E, deceased.; Sherman A.; A.D. b. 31 December 1866; Cassie B. ; Nellie D.; Faith B. and Eddie. Gray Gray, J.E. (p. 430) James E. Gray was born 21 March 1849 in Louisa Co., the son of William and Sarah (Stornach) Gray, natives of England and Maryland, respectively. They came to Louisa Co., in 1840. On the 22 of November 1877, Mr. Gray married Jennie Dawdy, who was born 21 November 1857, the daughter of Alfred; and Mary (Gunter) Dawdy, who were both born in Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Gray had three children: Chester E. b. 16 May 1881; Ethel, b. 6 June 1890 d. 1892; and Marian Edith b. 22 December 1893. Greiner Greiner, A. J. (p. 389) A. J. Greiner, D.D.S. was born in Muscatine Co., on the 6 April 1887, the son of W.P. and Katherine E. (Bretz) Greiner, the father a native of Pennsylvania and the mother of Virginia. There were four siblings. W.S.; Myrtle M. , m. C.W. McPike; Edna M.; and Frona. Griffith Griffith, H. M. (p. 544) Hezekiah M. Griffith was born 8 October 1873 in Madison Co., New York, the son of Thomas H. and Esther (Jones) Griffith, both of whom were born in Wales. Their family consisted of twelve children: Mary m. W.B. Morse of N.Y.; Jane; Elizabeth and John, all deceased; David, Winfield, Ia; Gordon and Thomas, also deceased; Daniel; Maggie m. D.E. Own of Cotter; Edward; Hezekiah and Hettie. Gabriel, E. K. Grafe Grafe, Theodore (p. 477) Theodore Grafe was born in April 1841 in Hanover, Germany and came to the United States in 1870. He died 27 December 1899. He married twice 1) Unknown 2) Elizabeth Avesing on the 15 October 1875, daughter of Harmon and Gertrude (Manka)Avesing, both natives of Germany. Her siblings were: Dena m. Frank Rath of Goshen, Washington; Henry, Muscatine; Herman, Germany; George, Kansas City, Missouri; August of Columbus Jct. and one died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Grafe had seven children: Clara; Walter of San Francisco; Mamie m. William Schlung of S.D.; Theodore, San Francisco; Esther; and two infants. Graham Graham, G. W. (p. 32) George Wilson Graham was born 13 October 1872, the son of B.I. and Ann (Blackburn) Graham. His paternal grandfather was Wilson Graham, a pioneer settler of Louisa County. He had the following siblings: Samuel R. b. 1 July 1875; Frank R. b. 20 May 1880; and Jennie M. b. 12 April 1885. Graves Graves, A.D. (p.263) A.D. Graves born 31 December 1866, was the son of G.W. and Sarah E.(Fairbanks) Graves. he married Carrie Spitsnogle, who was born in Louisa co. on the 23 February 1870, the daughter of John and Sarah (Shaw) Spitsnogle,the father a native of Indiana and the mother of Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Graves had five children: Nellie M. b. 27 July 1895; Merle Lea b. 11 March 1898; Gladys L. b. 2 November 1900; and Carrie A. b. 14 April 1909. Graves, G. W. (p. 262) The Graves family first settled in Louisa County in 1836. G. W. was born 13 November 1835 in Ashtabula Co., Ohio, the son of John and Amelia Graves, natives of Connecticut. He married Sarah E. Fairbanks, a native of Ohio in June 1856. She came to Iowa with her parents in 1842 and her mother died in 1846. Her father was a veteran of the Civil War. Mr. and Mrs. Graves had eight children: Charles H.; Cassie E, deceased.; Sherman A.; A.D. b. 31 December 1866; Cassie B. ; Nellie D.; Faith B. and Eddie. Gray Gray, J.E. (p. 430) James E. Gray was born 21 March 1849 in Louisa Co., the son of William and Sarah (Stornach) Gray, natives of England and Maryland, respectively. They came to Louisa Co., in 1840. On the 22 of November 1877, Mr. Gray married Jennie Dawdy, who was born 21 November 1857, the daughter of Alfred; and Mary (Gunter) Dawdy, who were both born in Kentucky. Mr. and Mrs. Gray had three children: Chester E. b. 16 May 1881; Ethel, b. 6 June 1890 d. 1892; and Marian Edith b. 22 December 1893. Greiner Greiner, A. J. (p. 389) A. J. Greiner, D.D.S. was born in Muscatine Co., on the 6 April 1887, the son of W.P. and Katherine E. (Bretz) Greiner, the father a native of Pennsylvania and the mother of Virginia. There were four siblings. W.S.; Myrtle M. , m. C.W. McPike; Edna M.; and Frona. Griffith Griffith, H. M. (p. 544) Hezekiah M. Griffith was born 8 October 1873 in Madison Co., New York, the son of Thomas H. and Esther (Jones) Griffith, both of whom were born in Wales. Their family consisted of twelve children: Mary m. W.B. Morse of N.Y.; Jane; Elizabeth and John, all deceased; David, Winfield, Ia; Gordon and Thomas, also deceased; Daniel; Maggie m. D.E. Own of Cotter; Edward; Hezekiah and Hettie. Hale, Oscar (p. 427) Oscar Hale was born at Wapello on 27 February 1867, the son of John and Clara (Rhodes) Hale. John Hale was married twice 1) Esther Palmer, by whom he had two children C.P. Lacey, of Wapello, and Lauren, who lived at Longton, KS. He m.2) Clara Rhodes by whom he had Oscar and Nellie and others unknown. Oscar became an attorney and married 20 February1899 to Carrie Sillick, daughter of Asher and Fannie (Mallory )Sillick. They had one son John, b. 5 August 1900. Hall Hall, Allen (p. 257) Allen Hall was born at Oakville on 29 March 1866, the son of Martin C. and Adaline (Bateman) Hall, the former a native of Cincinnati, Ohio. On the 19 October 1887, Mr. Hall married Anna Bettler, daughter of Charles and Barbara (Miller) Bettler. They had four children: Herbert C. b. 15 August 1888; Jennie, b. 25 July 1890; Bessie b. 17 June 1895; and Maude E. b. 15 September 1899. Hall, W.F. (p. 319) Walter F. Hall was born 6 June 1842 in Louisa County, the son of James G. and Celestia A. (Miller) Hall, the father a native of Pennsylvania and the mother of New York. They came to Louisa County in 1837, settling where Columbus City is now. There were ten children in the family, the three eldest died in infancy. The others were: William C.; Morris O.; Mary J. m. G.B. Williams, son of Judge Williams of Wapello; Edward I., who lived at Jennings, Louisiana; Arthur W., lived at Colfax; and Frances A. m. W.H. Hughes of Washington, IA. On the 7 June 1883, Mr. Hall married Octavia Jane Brown, the daughter of Dr. I.C. and Ruth M. (Hamlet) Brown, the father, a native of Tennessee, and the mother of Indiana. Mr. and Mrs. Hall had four children: Arthur B.; Walter Channing; Harry O.; and Hamlet C. Hamilton Hamilton, Alexander (p.242) Alexander Hamilton was born in Fayette Co., Ohio, on 14 August 1831, the son of Samuel and Mary (Holland) Hamilton, both natives of Ohio, who came to Louisa Co. in 1841. More about Samuel Hamilton in another sketch. On the 4 December 1856, Mr. Hamilton married Susanna Dotson, who was born in Pennsylvania and came to Iowa in 1844. She was a daughter of Bazel S. and Mary (Davidson) Dotson, natives of Pennsylvania and England respectively. Mr. and Mrs. Hamilton had nine children, as follows: Anna Letta, m. G. W. Schofield; Juan Darilla, m. William Torode; A.G.; T.T., lived in State of Washington; Adaline m. William O. Syphrit; Bertha , m. E.E. Campbell;Frank; George; and Charles. Hamilton, D.D. (p. 33) D.D. Hamilton was born 3 February 1850, the son of Samuel and Mary (Holland) Hamilton . He married S.C. Hunt in 1885, she was born in Morning Sun Twp., Louisa Co., in 1854, the daughter of S.G. and Margaret (Curran) Hunt, who are mentioned further in another sketch of her brother J.C. Hunt. Hamilton, Samuel (p.33) Samuel Hamilton died 13 September 1886 and his wife Mary (Holland) Hamilton died 15 March 1895. They came to Louisa Co. ca. 1840-41. Hanft. J.A. (p. 512) Jacob A. Hanft was born 29 March 1855 in Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania, the son of John N. and Helena (Smith) Hanft, the father a native of Germany and the mother of Pennysylvania. They came to Louisa Co. in 1864, settling in Columbus City Twp. They had thirteen children: William H.; John d. y.; Milton D.; Jacob A., our subject; Theodore F.; George S.; Emma, m. Reuben Heindel; Martha m. George Wren of Sheridon, Wyoming; Cora, d. in infancy; John T.; Sarah, m. A.J. Willett; Edward; and Louis, d. in infancy. Mr. Hanft married 3 November 1878 to Lucy Wetherell, who d. in March 1901. They had five children: Jesse Edward, who lived in Indianapolis, Ind.;Clyde J.; Mary Helen, m. John S. Dowson; Bessie; and Allan W. In June 1903, he remarried to Sadie Segafoos, daughter of Dan Segafoos. Hardman Hardman, John (p.106) John Hardman was born 14 April 1865, son of Silas and Amanda (Fulwider) Hardman, natives of Germany. They came to Louisa Co. in 1885. They had the following children: Charles; John; Ella m. David Woodruff; and Jane m. WIlliam Khone of Muscatine Co. Mr. Hardman married 11 February 1892 to Mollie Beik, b. 5 July 1868, the daughter of Jacob and Emma (Jackson) Beik. They had three children: Guy H. b. 30 August 1893; Milton B. b. 30 October 1896; and Grace Lucille b. 15 November 1904. Haroff Haroff, James (p. 426) James Haroff was born 11 February 1868 in Lake Twp.,Muscatine Co. His parents, David and Christina (Foster) Haroff, were born in Ohio, but married in Iowa. The father died 17 September 1898. They had four children: Ella m. Martin Laughlin; James; Ida m. William Dickerson; and Etta S. m. John McClure. Mr. Haroff married 21 June 1895 to Elmira Bernard, daughter of Charles and Mary (Schneider ) Bernard, natives of Illinois and Germany, respectively. Her father died June 1910. Known siblings of Elmira: Ella m. Nicholas Yancy of Point Roberts, Washington; and Millie m. Clinton Cocklin. Mr. and Mrs. Haroff had one son: Earl David b. 18 June 1896. Harris Harris, Harvey (p. 96) Harvey Harris was born 21 September 1817 in Lincoln Co., Ohio; d.16 December 1907; son of Thomas and Rachel (Sutton) Harris, natives of Ohio, grandson of W.M. Harris, a veteran of Rev. War. He married ? and had eight children: Harriet m. Alexander Hamilton; Isaac; Thomas; Rachel; Joseph; Jasper N.; Eugene; and George B. The mother of the children died January 1895, but her name is not given. Harrison Harrison, G. D. (p. 425) George D. Harrison was born 19 December 1829, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of S.P. and Catherine (Fawkes ) Harrison, both born in Delaware Co., Pennsylvania. They moved to Ohio in 1834 where they both died. There were four children: George D.; Susan; Catherine m. F. Walker; and G.I. of St. Louis, Missouri. Mr. Harrison married in 1859 to Lou C. Ringer, b. in Maryland, daughter of Andrew P. and Catherine Ringer. Her parents were natives of Maryland and were among the early settlers of Louisa Co. Mr. and Mrs. Harrison had three childrne: Harry L.; Chester; and Milton. Mrs. Harrison died 10 September 1909. Hawkins Hawkins, R. G. (p.54) Rodney G. Hawkins was born at Boston Corners, St. Lawrence Co.,New York on the 20th of July 1863, the son of Jasper H. and Elizabeth (Kingsley) Hawkins. His father was an attorney. The family has been in this country since as early as 1700. Uriah Kingsley, the great grandfather of our subject served in the Revolutionary War. He died in November 1849. Rodney G. Hawkins married Avanella G. Kinkead, on 15 October 1891. She was the daughter of J.M. and Rebecca (Orr) Kinkead. They had two children: J. Blaine and June G. Heindel Heindel, Reuben (p. 97) Reuben Heindel was born 10 June 1860 in Columbus City Twp., the son of Samuel and Susan (Rathfon) Heindel, both natives of Pennsylvania, who came to Louisa Co. in 1853. The father died in April 1874. There were nine children, but only five names in this account: David; Samuel; Mary Jane m. Marian Carter, lived in Salt Lake City; Julia m. Edward Williams of Portland, Oregon; and our subject. Reuben Heindel married 22 March 1881 to Emma M.C. Hanft, who was born in Lehigh Co., Pennsylvania, 20 March 1861, the daughter of John and Helena (Smith) Hanft. Mr. and Mrs. Heindel had six children: Theodore F. b. 5 December 1881, d. 22 September 1882; Nellie B. b. 25 January 1883, d. 26 April 1886; Malcolm J. b. 30 November 1885; Helena I. b. 29 March 1889, m. Samuel James; Eva M. b. 13 August 1891; and Francis E. b. 11 January 1894. Hendrickson Hendrickson, G.M. (p.367) George M. Hendrickson was born in Louisa County on 23 August 1869, son of Austin and Mary E. (Tindall) Hendrickson. His parents were both natives of Indiana where they were married, but soon thereafter came to Union Twp. in Louisa Co. They had eleven childre: Thomas W.; C.W.; George M.; Ira W.; Milton T.; Mary m. Louis Owens of Colorado; Minnie A. m. Edgar Todd. Mr. Hendrickson married 23 March 1893 to Elizabeth P. Kelch, a native of Stark Co., Illinois, born 3 October 1876, the daughter of Michael and Emma (Hampson) Kelch. The father died 3 January 1881. Her parents were born in New York, but were married in Illinois in 1872. They had four children: Sarah, m. Otto Schebiel, of Washington, Iowa; Minnie, m. Charles Hamilton of Montana; Elizabeth P.; and Clara m. C.N. Edwards of Lone Tree, Iowa. Mrs. Kelch remarried to Edward Harmon of Indiana and had one daughter Florence who married Lester Orr of Union Twp. Mr. and Mrs. Hendrickson had four children, as follows: Mabel G. b. 20 March 1894; Emma R. b. 15 August 1895; Jake W. b. 13 September 1897; and Jessie L. b. 25 August 1899. Herr Herr, Gregor (p. 156) Gregor Herr was born in Germany on the 10 March 1845, the son of Frederick and Belbia Herr. They had six children: Gregor; Mathias, d. in Germany; George; Andrew; Elizabeth m. George Hook; and Caroline of Des Moines Co. Mr. Herr married twice 1)Augusta Hook, daughter of Joseph and Barbara Hook. By her, he had five children: Joseph; George; Emerson m. D.E. Strawhacker of Oakville;Sophis m. F.S. Searl; and Annie m. Harry Munson. The mother died 17 March 1895, and on Valentine's Day 14 February 1900, Mr. Herr married 2)Mrs. Mary A. Kerr, the widow of James Kerr, and the daughter of William and Martha Munson. By his second wife, Mr. Herr had three children: Lucy, Ruby, and Evalina. Herrick Herrick, D.W. V. (p. 123) D.W.V. Herrick was born in Louisa County on the 13 april 1864, the son of H.S. and Delilah (Herkins) Herrick. He was one of fourteen children: Hulda, m. P.T. Benson of Des Moines; Henrietta m. Andrew Davis of Oklahoma; Catharine, m. E.C. Friend; Emeline m. E.T. Alstot of Grand Island, Nebraska; Rose m. W.N. Kettlestrings of Oak Park, Illinois; Mary m. Eugene Parce of S.D.; Hannah m. William Owens; Mercy m. C.F. Linton of Missouri; D.W.V., our subject; Zilpha m. Harry Parsons of Kansas; and Joan m. John W. Jarvis of Morning Sun; the sixth and seventh in order of birth died in infancy. Mr. Hendrick married 12 September 1894, to Della Owens, daughter of John and Sarah (Foster ) Owens, who were the parents of ten children as follows: Edwin; Lola m. Harry Reece of Winfield; Della; Burtus; Jennine m. John Campbell of Oakville; Miller; Earl; Clyde; and Nellie, m. Bert Moyers. The first child died in infancy Mr. and Mrs. Herrick had four children:Chester M.; Beulah Alma; Myrtle Sarah and Marie Delilah, twins. Hesse Hesse, F.H. (p. 119) F.H. Hesse was born in Butler Co., Iowa on the 1 November 1873, the son of Frank and Lucy (Hill) Hesse, born in Germany and Wisconsin, respectively. There five children included: F.H. of this review; George F.; John L.; Clyde R.; and Cora E., who died in infancy. Mr. Hesse married LIllian Dale Patterson in Clarksville, IOwa. She was one of three children born to Francis and Mary (Wamsley) Patterson. The others were: Edward and Francis Lloyd. Mr. and Mrs. Hesse had two children: Dorothy and Robert Francis. Hicklin, Edwin (p. 34) Edwin Hicklin is a native of Wapello, Iowa, born 4 September 1867, son of James Hall and Saah Ellen (Williams) Hicklin. His maternal grandfather, Robert Williams, was the first white man to build a cabin in the Indian reservation in 1836. The father of our subject came to Iowa with Daniel Ellege, a minister of the gospel in 1840 and settled in Louisa Co. There were seven children in the family: Mary F. m. Henry Brememr; Martha m. Rufus M. Archibald; Millard F.; Monroe; Amanda m. Thomas A. Gallagher; James D.; and Edwin of this review. Mr. Hicklin married 6 June 1894 to Millicent Reichley, daughter of George W. and Catherine (Brookhart) Reichley. She was one of eight children: Mary Elizabeth m. Joseph Meeker; Joseph A.; Margaret E. m. Rev. Charles Blanchard; Sarah; George C.; Henry E.; Millicent; and Laura m. W.V. Runyon. Mr. and Mrs. Hicklin also had eight children: Edwin; Millicent; Mary; Jean; Catherine; Albert; Otis; Laura Alice; and Millard Fillmore. Holiday Holiday, A.L. (p. 275) Alvin L. Holiday was born in Taylor Co., Iowa on the 28 October 1861, son of Abraham and Malinda (Murry) Holiday. The father was a native of Illinois and the mother of Indiana where they were married. They came to Iowa in 1854 to Taylor County until 1899 when they moved to Miami Co., KS, where the mother died in1904. Eleven children were in Mr. Holiday's family: Charles W.; Austin, KS; G.M. Carthage, Mo; J.F. of New Mexico; F.E. ; Minnie H. m. a Navel of Severy, KS; Carrie A. m. J.B. Telferd of Brookville, KS; Leslie O. of Holden, Mo.;O.A. of Woodward, Oklahoma; Laura, Clarence and Alvin L. Alvin Holiday was married 3 July 1894 to Alice Harris, a native of Platte Co., Missouri, the daughter of J.P. and Sumyra Harris. The parents were also natives of Missouri until the 1860's when they came to Iowa. There were eight children in the Harris family: Margaret; William D.; Mattie A.; J.S.; Docia E.; Christopher L.; Alice, (above) and one son died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Holiday had two daughters: Frances R. b. 23 September 1895; and Vivian A. born 22 August 1899. Hook Hook, A.B. (p. 266) Alonzo B. Hook was born in Louisa County on 9 August 1855, the son of George W. and Emily B. (Trask) Hook. The father, whose birth occurred in Augusta Co., Virginia, in 1825, came to Louisa County at the age of twelve. There were nine children in the family: Alonzo B., our subject; Elisha I.; Sophia J. m. Dr. Frank Tustison; Jessie L. m. Abe Parsons; Grant; George, Jr.; Emma m. Dr. Frank Wright; Lola m.. W.V. Edwards and Dr. Merritt B. of Kremmling, Colorado. On the 31 October 1888, Alonzo B. Hook married Emma Berryhill, who was born 20 July 1865 in Iowa City, the daughter of William DeWitt and Anna (Depin) Berryhill, natives of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. Mr. and Mrs. Hook had three children: Fannie J. b. 18 October 1890; Cornelia b. 16 May 1895; and Albert A. b. 3 August 1897. Hook, Grant (p. 218) Grant Hook was born 25 february 1865, also the son of George W. and Emily B. (Trask) Hook. He married 15 October 1891 to Amelia Gauss, who was born 8 March 1872, the daughter of J.G. and Anna B. (Schneider ) Gauss, natives of Wurtemberg, Germany, who emigrated to the United States in the early 1860's, settling first in Madison, Indiana. They came to Louisa County in 1866. Mr. and Mrs. Hook had two children: Mildred b. 17 October 1894 and Frank Gauss, b. 15 March 1897. Howey Howey, Harris (p. 102) Dr. Harris Howey was born 3 May 1817 in Canandaigua, New York, the son of Thomas and Lodema (Harris) Howey. On the maternal side, his ancestors came from England to the new world in 1647 with the Plymouth Pilgrims and located in New London, Connecticut, but subsequently removed to New York. The Doctor's father was born in the north of Ireland and first located in Coldwater, Michigan. His wife died in1833 and he died in 1838 at Columbus, Ohio. Dr. Howey married 1) in 1840 to Susan Dellabarr, who died two years later. He m. 2) 24 March 1844 to Sarah J. Marshall, a native of Wellsburg, West Virginia, who came to Iowa in 1840 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joshua Marshall. She died 29 November 1880. They had the following children: Virginia m. ___Ingersoll, Clarksville, Missouri; Thomas; Frank, Lemmon, S.D.; and Charles of St. Louis, Missouri.He married 3) 15 March 1883 to Lida McMahill and they had one daughter Sadie Ladema b. 19 May 1891 and died the following August. Mrs. Howey's father William McMahill, was born in Lexington, Kentucky, 22 June 1824 and was married in Pike County, Illinois, in 1847 to Mary Walker, who was born in St. Louis, Missouri, 24 August 1824. Hudson Hudson, N.E. (p. 515) Noah E. Hudson was born in Des Moines County, Iowa on 6 April 1877, the son of John and Elizabeth (Dowell) Hudson, natives of Pennsylvania and Indiana, respectively. On the 18 March 1903, he married Irene Webster, daughter of Eli and Harriet (Sellers) Webster. The Websters had three children: Talma, died in infancy; Walter H.; and Irene(above). Mr. and Mrs. Hudson had two daughters: Alice Leona b. 12 September 1904; and Hariret Elizabeth b. 5 January 1910. Huff Huff, J.F. (p. 468) J. Fred Huff was born in Pennsylvania 8 November 1857, the son of L.W. and Anna Stamen (Hipple) Huff. On the 29 November 1884, he married Emma Carter, daughter of Edwin and Mary (Sargent) Carter. Mrs. Huff was one of eight children: Marion; Minerva m. Edward Albright of Danville, Iowa; John of Spokane, Washington; Ollie m. Wesley Albright of Burlington; Emma (above); Mary F. m. Rufus Boyce; Nevada E.; and Albina m. Frank Ritchey of Des Moines Co. Huff, L.W. (p.209) L.W. Huff was born 14 September 1831 in Pennsylvania, the son of John and Anna (Eisenhart) Huff, both natives of Pennsylvania. On the 14 February 1854, Mr. Huff married Anna S. Hipple, daughter of Frederick and Mary B. Hipple. They had nine children, six who survived: Anna m. Henry Cutcomb of Louisa Co; John; Harry; Elmer; Agnes m. J..M. Harris; and Mamie m. Orville Sipe of Cedar Rapids. Hull Hull, J.C. (p. 521) John C. Hull was born in Canton, Missouri on the 19 June 1873, the son of John C. and Emily(Patrick) Hull, natives of Pennsylvania. They came to Louisa County in 1890. They had three children: Our subject, John C.; Anna, died in infancy; and Myra m. John Ward of Memphis, Tennessee. On the 3 Apirl 1893, Mr. Hull married Nellie Moore, daughter of W.K. and Louisa (Baker) Moore, who were the parents of the following children: Nellie (above); Margaret and William, twins; Ada m. Gary Orr. Mr. and Mrs. Hull had three children: WIlliam, Muriel,and one that died in infancy. Hunt Hunt, J.C.( p. 516) J.C. Hunt was born near Morning Sun, Iowa on the 3 April 1860, the son of Stephen G. Hunt, who was a native of Wayne County, Indiana. His mother, Josephine Curran was born in Maryland. He was one of five children: M.G.; Caroline m. D.D. Hamilton; J.C.; William P. and Sophronia m. S.C. Bell of Missouri. Mr. Hunt married 23 December 1887 to Kate Hall, who was born near Prairie City in Fulton Co., Illinois, a daughter of John D. and Margaret (Virden) Hall. Her father was a native of Somerset County, New Jersey and died in Kansas 22 December 1901. Mr. and Mrs. Hunt had two children: Hazel, who died in infancy; and Margaret J. Hunt, Ralph R. (p. 416) Ralph Reid Hunt was born in Marshall Twp. , Louisa Co., Iowa on the 16 January 1879, hte son of Henry R. and Laura L. (Hornsby) Hunt, natives of Ohio. Douglas Parsons died in 1903 and his widow married Abe Parsons, son of Thomas Parsons. Mr. and Mrs. Hunt had two children: Reid I. b. 14 July 1903 and Helen Douglas b. 29 September 1904. Hunt, William P. (p. 556) William P. Hunt was born 23 January 1862, the son of Stephen G. and Josephine (Curran) Hunt. He married Mamie E. Nelson of Ringgold Co. Hupp Hupp, John F. (p. 555) John Frank Hupp was born in Louisa County on the 14 August 1882, the son of John C. Hupp, who was a native of Pennsylvania. Before her marriage, his mother was Delia A. Jones. He was one of four children, but two died young and he had only the one surviving brother, Horace and farmed with his brother. Huston Huston, Renwick (p. 399) Renwick Huston was born in Fayette Co., Indiana on the 5 May 1837. He first located in Des Moines County and farmed there until retirement at which time he moved to Morning Sun, Iowa. He married 26 December 1860 to Katherine Knight, who was born in Monroe Co., Indiana, the daughter of John and Elizabeth Knight. Mr. and Mrs. Huston's children: Rosanna J. m. C. H. Bonner; Elizabeth H., m. A. C. McHenry of Downs, Iowa; Mary B. m. Herman Weinrich; Robert J.; and Thomas R. Idle Idle, F.B.(p.488) F. B.I dle was born in Campaign Co., Ohio, on the 23 January 1843, the son of John and Nancy R. (Kiser) Idle, natives of Ohio and Pennsylvania, respectively. On the 16 April 1865, Mr. Idle married Mary E. Brumley, who was born in Virginia, the daughter of Smith and Lucy A. (Vincent) Brumley. Her parents were natives of Virginia and came to Iowa in 1856. They had nine children: Mary E. now Mrs. Idle; John L.; Joseph W.; Thomas N.; Julia A. d. in infancy; Nellie F. m. Ambro Hickman of Batesvile,Indiana; Etta V. m. Frank E. Graham; Harvey B. d. age 31; and Effie m. Art E. Barber, of Pleasanton, Ks. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Idle were born five children: Clara B. m. H.M. Shearer who had nine children, namely: Carl Vernon, Harry Merle; Beatrice Mary; Frank M. ; Monte May; Darlene Marie; one d. in infancy; Austin Morris and Allen Dale. Newton Idle the eldest son of our subject had five children, namely: Francis, Russell; Floyd, Clara, and Vera. Nancy Nancy A. Idle married James Small and had four children: Arthur, Molly, Alice and Ratio. Lucy R. married E.S. Rabe and they had Maurice. Oliver I. had four children: Leo, Eugene, John and Erma. Isett Isett, W.S. (p. 522) William S. Isett was born at Wapello,Louisa Co., Iowa, on the 28 May 1852, the son of Edward B. and Mary (Oliver) Isett, both of whom were natives of Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. They came to Louisa Co. in 1841 where Mr. Isett embarked in the mercantile business. They had ten children, as follows: J.O.; William S., of this review; G.M. and seven deceased, names unknown at the present time. W.S. Isett married in 1881 to Mary McPartland, the daughter of J.B. and Jane (Drewer) McPartland, both of whom were natives of Ireland. T hey emigrated to AMerica in 1842, first locating at Burlington, Iowa. They had two children: Edward B. married Agnes Severs and had three children. They were Donald S.; Margaret L.; and Edward S.; and Mary S., atttending college in1912. Ives, F.T. (p.95) Frank T. Ives, former Clerk of the County Court of Louisa Co., was born in Wapello, 12 January 1875, the son of Cicero J. and Rebecca L. (Townsend) Ives. His grandfather Cicero Madison Ives died 22 April 1847. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Cicero J. Ives, namely: Frant T.; Nellie E. m. Oliver Gunnels, of Fort Dodge; Mamie E. m. William Van Horn, also of Fort Dodge; Rose A; Cornelia M. m. James Phelan, of Fort Dodge; and Walter M. On 3 August 1903, Mr. Ives married Clyde C. Shipman; daughter of O.E. and Samantha Shipman. they had two children: Louis E. b. 1 September 1906 and Frances, b. 26 June 1909 and died in infancy. Jamison, Edwin Reymer (p. 232) Edwin Reymer Jamison ws born in Louisa Co., on 26 June 1860, the son of , natives of Ohio and Pennsylvania, respectively. They came to Louisa County in 1840 and had eight children: Minnie; Edwin R., our subject; Melvin; Victoria; Gertrude; Myrtle; William B. and Frank. Mr. Jamison married 9 September 1888 to Belle Vandevort, a daughter of Francis Asbury and Sarah (Lindsey) Vandevort. Her father was a Civil War veteran and her mother a daughter of Dr. J. Lindsey of Grandview. She was the eldest of five children, the others being: Lottie; Emma; Harry; and Arthur. Mr. and Mrs. Jamison had nine children, as follows: Guy C.;; Hal R.; Orin L.; Esther; Bernice; Emma; Donald E.; Dorothy and Helen. Jamison, J.W. (p. 44) J.W. Jamison was born 29 August 1841, in Louisa County, the son of George and Hulda (Herrick) Jamison. The father was a native of Ohio and the mother of New York. They had eight children; J.W. Jacob H. Merrit L.; and O. Brigham and two died in infancy. Mr. Jamison married 28 September 1862 to Rachel Vaugn, daughter of John and Deborah (Mason) Vaughn. The Vaughns were the parents of thirteen children: a daughter died in infancy; Jeremiah; Mary m. C. McCray; Margaret; Hannah; Rachel, now Mrs. Jamison; Isaac; William J.; Jesse; Aurelia m. Geoger Mason of Woodbury; Virginia; Minerva; and Ziba. Mr. and Mrs. Jamison had five children: Tuttle G.; Isaac; Hulda J. m. D. Kremer; Meinerva m. T. Dotson; and Mary m. Wilson Robb. Jamison, O.I. (p. 371) O.I. Jamison was born in Pickaway Co., Ohio, on 12 January 1845 and died 18 April 1908. He was the son of William D. and Isabella (Seeds) Jamison. He came to Lousia Co. with his parents when he was nine years old. He married 12 January 1872 to Mary J. Gillis, born 25 October 1844, the daughter of Ridgway and Margaret (McBain) Gillis, who were married 14 April 1849 in Pennsylvania. The father was a native of New York, born 15 February 1818. The paternal grandfather James L. Gillis, (1792-1880) was a soldier in the War of 1812, judge, and a member of congress from the twenty fourth district. He came to Iowa in 1862. Mr. and Mrs. Jamison had one son: William D. b. 9 November 1873. Jennings Jennings, Alvin W. Jennings was born in Louisa County on 13 March 1858, the son of Benajmin and Nancy Ann (Jefferis) Jennings. The parents were natives of Pennsylvania. Benjamin died in 3 September 1894 and the mother died in August of 1863. The father was a son of David and Lucretia (Nash) Jennings and great grandson of David and Mary (Henthorn) Jennings, who were married in York Co. and settled in southeastern Pennsylvania. The Henthorns were some of the early settlers of Chester Co., Pa. Benjamin Franklin Jennings and his wife were parents of ten children: Elijah, k. in Civil War; MIfflin, Jewell Co., KS; William Henry, Davenport, NB; Taylor; Enoch of Van Meter, Ia; Jefferis, died unm.; Franklin; Ellen m. Alvin W. Jennings married Isabelle Hester, on the 25 January 1883. Isabelle was the daughter of Stephen and Emily (Peckinpaugh) Hester. The latter was twice married, her first husband was Levi (not Elijah as stated in the history book) Hester, a cousin of Stephen who was killed in the Civil War. Johnson was born near Columbia City, Indiana on 16 June 1866, the son of W.R. and Martha D. (Bennett) Johnston, both originally from Ohio. He was one of eleven children, the others: Addie, m. Mr. Johnston m. 23 February 1898 to Ida M. Newell, the daughter of Thomas and Sarah J. (Mock) Newell, natives of Ohio and Pennsylvania, respectively. The Newells had ten chidlren: Elizabeth m. Johnston, R.F. (p. 386) R.F. Johnston, were born the 29 June 1880, the son of T.J. and Margaret (McConnell) Johnston, both natives of Pennsylvania. They came to Louisa County in the 1840s. Wiederrecht, who was born in Louisa County, the daughter of George and Elizabeth Wiederrecht. Mr. and Mrs. Johnston had two children: Rexford N. b. 17 March 1907; and Robert L. b. 15 September 1908. Johnston, T.E. (p. 343) T. Edgar Johnston was born 3 July 1864 near New Wilmington, Pennsylvania, the son of Thomas and Kezia (Kendall) Johnston. The parents were born and married in Pennsylvania where the father died in 1889 They had nine children: J.K.; Ellawea; Oscar S.; T. Edgar, the subject of this sketch: Mary M. m. C.R. McCutcheon of Zanesville, OH; Nora K. m. Owen Dunlap of Pittsburg, KS;Laila d. in Pa.; John F. d. at McConnellsville, Pa; and Morris. On the 5 March 1891, Mr. Johnston married Emma L. Walker, a native of Louisa Co., b. 3 Spetember 1864, the youngest daughter of J.P and Mrs. Walker. Her siblings were: William; Daniel; and Anna m. J.K. Chambers of Portland, OR. Mrs. Johnston died 16 August 1909 from the effects of a gallstone operation. Jones Jones, Griffith (p. 164) Griffith Jones was born 5 January1865 in Wales, the son of Richard and Anna (Jones) Jones. The father emigrated to America in 1868 and settled on a farm in Des Moines Co., Iowa. He died in 1873 and his wife in June 1899. There were six children in the family: Griffith; one who d. in infancy; Owen; Jane; Robert; and Anna. On the 22 December 1892, Mr. Jones married Jennie A. Richard, a daughter of David and Sarah (Owens) Richard, both of whom were born in Wales The father died 20 March 1892. There were three children born to Mr. and Mrs. Jones: David R. b. 10 September 1893; Laura Jane b. 10 February 1895; and John G. b. 13 July 1899. Jones, M.E. (p. 385) Marshall E. Jones was born the 26th of August 1873, the son of Barton M. and Martha A. (Enyart) Jones, both natives of Bureau Co., Illinois. They moved to Louisa Co. about 1860 where the father died in March 1898 and the maother in July 1904. The five surviving children were: Mary E.; Lewis A.; Daniel; J.H.; and Marshall E. of this review. On the 15 September 1910, Marshall E. Jones married Minnie I. Pfeifer, a native of Louisa Co. and the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Pfeifer. Jones, R.T. (p. 76) Robert T. Jones was born the 27 February 1836 in Liverpool, England, the son of David M.and Elizabeth Jones, both natives of Wales. They emigrated to the United States and lived in New York for a time and subsequently moved to Ohio They came to Louisa Co., Iowa in1855. David M. Jones died in 1863 and Mrs. Jones in 1890. Their children were: Robert T., of this review; Alice m. D.G. Lewis of Columbus City Twp.; WIlliam O., killed in the Civil War;Catherine m. Hugh Davis; Elizabeth m. J.N. Evans, of Missouri; and Albert who d. at the age of seven. Robert T. Jones was married in February 1864 to Dinah Davis, a daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Davis, who were natives of South Wales and came to America in 1853, locating in Henry Co., Iowa. Kauffman was born 2 March 1879 in Fillmore Co., Nebraska, son of Joseph and Mary E. (Dennis) Kauffman. The father was b. in Pennsylvania and the mother in Louisa County. Keller Keller, W.N. (p. 178) William N.Keller was born in Knox Co.,OHio, 31 January 1840, son of George and Mary (McLean) Keller, who were natives of Germany. (p. 438) George Wilbert Kerr was born in Henry Co., Illinois, 21 April 1865, the son of Thomas Walker and Amanda (Henninger) Kerr. (p. 153) Dale W. Kremer was born in Louisa Co., on 14 September 1861, the son of W.S. and Elizabeth E. (Whicher) Kremer. On the 13 september 1886, Mr. Kremer married Jennie Jamison, who was born in Newport, Ia., the daughter of J.W. and Rachel Jamison. The Kremers had two chidlren: Clara Pearl m. John A. Kuntz was born in Livingston Co., Illinois, on the 10 April 1881, the son of Christian and Amelia (Smith) Kuntz, both natives of Germany, from which they emigrated. They first settled in Illinois but in 1904 moved to Des Moines Co., Iowa. Mr. Kuntz married in 1903 to Mary Berger, a native of Tazewell, County, Illinois. They had three children: Olivia, Milton, and Dorothy. They moved to Oakville, Louisa County, Iowa in 1909. Lang, G.W. (p.246) George W. Lang was born in Muscatine Co., Iowa, on the 27th of February 1867, and is a son of Nicholas and (Margaret (Lieberknecht) Lang. The father, a native of Germany and the mother of Pennsylvania., but they were married in Muscatine Co. The mother died in 1908 On the 8 January 1910 George W. Lang m. Mrs. Bertha B. Lieberknecht, the widow of Benjamin Lieberknecht, who died 27 March 1908. Mrs. Lang was the daughter of W.J. and Mary (Smith) Ronald. She was born in Louisa Co. on 13 October 1868. Mr. Ronald was born in Oxford, Ohio on the 9 October 1834 and Mrs. Ronald was born in Oxford, Ohio on the 25 December 1842. They were married 6 October 1863 in Ohio and moved shortly thereafter to a farm in Louisa County where Mr. Ronald died 20 February 1882. His wife died 7 March 1882. They had eight children: Anabel m. George H. Barber; Martha E. d. age 3; Bertha B.; Mrs. Lang; Helen R. m. David Kirk, a banker of Niagara, N.D.; John T. d. age 17; Ada P. d. age 15; William Roy b. 1 June 1879; and Marion Ethel. Lang, H.E. (p.328) Henry E. Lang was born in Muscatine Co., on the 12 April 1866, the son Nicholas and Margaret (Lieberknecht) Lang. The Langs and Lieberknechts both came to Louisa Co. around 1836. There were eight children in hte Lang family: Benjamin; Henry E, of this review.; George; William; Louis; Albert d. age 21; Nellie m. Dr. Miller of Wilton Jct.; and Bertha m. Rolly Herr of Wilton. Mr. Lang married n the 5 February 1896 to Margaret A. Gast, who ws born in Louisa Co. on hte 22 August 1873., the daughter of Herman and Sarah (Stineman) Gast. Her father was a native of Germany and her mother of Ohio, but they married in Grandview Twp. Louisa Co. Mrs. Gast died 15 April 1906 leaving four children Farrie; Margaret A. (of this review); Rush; and Ora. Lee Lee, D.L. (p. 524) Dwight L. Lee was born 7 September 1860 in Huron Co., Ohio, the only child of Addison E. and Mercy (Hale) Lee. Mrs. Lee died in1868 and Mr. Lee on the 23 March1911 at the age of 82. In February 1881, Mr. Lee married 1)Mary Fawcett, who was born in Lucas Co., Ohio, the daughter of Joshua and Camilla Faucett, natives of Ohio. They had two children; Ella b. 1 June 1890, Detroit, Michigan; and Katherine b. in 1893, m. Michael Jacoby of Toledo, Ohio, where she died. On the 24 November 1897, Mr. Lee m. 2)Mrs. Emma Owens, widow of Homer Owens. She was born in England on the 20 December 1864 and emigrated to the United States with her parents who located in Iowa when she was five. By Mr. Lee, she had one son Harry A. b. November 1900. She had a daughter by her previous marriage, Ada B. Owens, m. Clarence Tuttle of Lone Tree, Ia. Letts Letts, H.M. (p. 469) The Honorable Hilton M.Letts died 6 March 1911, at the age of 53. He was born 13 may 1857, the son of Madison N. Letts, a pioneer of Louisa Co. On the 5 May 1880, Mr. Letts married Nellie Springer, daughter of the late Judge Francis Springer of Iowa (the author of the History of Louisa County). They had three children: Mrs. George Remly of Cimarron, N.M.; Mary Helen; and Warren. Mary Helen was married 5 May 1911 to Earl Brown of Emmettsburg. Mr. Letts served four years in the state legislature.There is a very lengthy and pretentious account of Mr. Letts life in the History book that might be of interest to descendants, but there is very little concrete genealogical information. Letts, J.H. (p.490) James H. Letts was born in Grandview Twp.Louisa Co., Iowa on the 27 April 1855,the son of Nehemiah M. and Jane (Holderman) Letts, both natives of Ohio, the former born in Licking Co. and the latter in Marion Co. They were married near Ottawa, Illinois and lived there until 1853, when they came west to Louisa Co. Nehemiah Letts was married three times 1) a Miss Grove by whom he had two children: Rowena m. E.F. Brockway; adn David G. who d. in Washington Co. at the age of 40: By his 2) marriage to Jane Holderman, he had six children: William H. d. age 49; James H., of this review; Hilton M.;Emma S. m. John Waters of Santa Cruz, CA; Noah R.; and Emery d. in infancy.Later he married 3) Mrs. Adelia Sawyer, a native of Rochester, N.Y. On the 21 March 1877, J.H. Letts married Mary M. Hendries, who was born in Muscatine Co., Iowa on the 1 February 1855, the daughter of Henry and Margaret (Dinwiddie) Hendries of Ohio and Kentucky respectively. Mr. Hendries was twice married 1) Theodosia Willits by whom he had seven children, four of whom are: William Hendries; Mrs. Ellen Wagner of Ashland, Oregon; Ira of Avalon, Missouri and Mrs. Melissa Long of Pittsburg, Pa. Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Letts had three children: Vinnie D. m. Clyde Turkington of Loveland, Co.; Adelia P.; and Harland D. Letts, J.R. (p.483) James Robinson Letts was born near Newark, Licking Co., Ohio, on 20 December 1820, died 18 December 1910. His grandfather in the paternal line was Nehemiah Letts, a solder of the Revolutionary War and a minute man. The Nehemiah Letts Chapter of the D.A.R. was formed of his descendants and the wives of his descendants. David Letts the father of James R. Letts, was born in Pennsylvania and married Mrs. Elizabeth (Lair )Dunavan, a widow. They located in Licking Co. She had three sons by her first marriage: Albert, William and George Dunavan, who moved to Illinois with their stepfather. By her marriage to David Letts, she had Madison, James and Noah, all of whom became settlers of Louisa Co. One daughter Amanda was added to the family and they made the trip to LaSalle Co., Ill in 1830. Mr. Letts came to Iowa when he was 17 years old. He stated that he assisted in building the first courthouse at Linneus, the county seat of Linn County at that time. While in Linn County, Mr. Letts married 1)a young English girl, Hannah Hilton, who had come to the states with an aunt because she was an orphan. His wife died in 1854. He had only one child by his first wife: Annette, who married Edwin Robinson of Vinton, Ia. On the 3 March 1859, Mr. Letts married 2) to Albina Brockway, daughter of James M. and Lydia (Goff) Brockway, natives of New York and pioneers fo Pennsylvania and Iowa. They settled in Louisa Co. in May 1842. By his second marriage Mr. Letts had nine children: Cora E. M. B.F. Marick of Boston, Mass.; Chester H. born 1861, d. at Needles, Ca. in 1898; Alice Grace, d. in infancy; Ella Elizabeth, m. F.E. McCrary of Florence, Arisona; James D. Letts m. Lillie Runyan; Emery Clinton m. Jane Ellen Bushey: Arthur R. m. Alice Winkler; Fay R. m. Jessie Dickerson: Frank B. m. Elsie Stapp Lewis Lewis, D.G.(p.545) D. G. Lewis was born in Oneida Co., N.Y. on 23 October 1853, son of George and Margaret (Jones) Lewis, the former of England and the latter of Wales. The father came to America at the age of 23. He died 14 October 1909 and his wife died 27 June 1904. D.G. was brought to Louisa Co., by his parents, when he was four years old. On the 22 December 1875, Mr. Lewis married Alice Jones, daughter of D.M. and Elizabeth (Jones) Jones. The parents were both born in Wales: In the Jones family there were six children: Elizabeth; Catherine; Alice m. D.G. Lewis; Robert T.; William k. battle of Atlanta, Georgia, in Civil War; and Albert d. age 7. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis had four children: William G.; Walter J.; Alice Maud m. John D. Evans; and Elizabeth Jane. Lieberknecht Lieberknecht, Jacob (p. 292) Jacob Lieberknecht, who died in Concord Twp., Louisa Co. on the 30 June 1903, was born in in Pennsylvania on the 30 August 1840, the son of Nicholas and Catherine (Reibold) Lieberknecht, both natives of Germany. They emigrated to the United States in 1840 and were married in Pennsylvania. They came to Iowa about 1850. On the 23 December 1875, Mr. Lieberknecht married Rosina Blauer, a native of Switzerland and a daughter of Frederick and Anna (Rubie) Blauer, who were likewise natives of that country. They came to the U.S. in 1862 and settled near Grandview, Iowa. Mr. Blauer died 4 May 1896 and Mrs. Blauer died on Thanksgiving Day, 1889. They had eleven children: Frederick; Anna m. George Walter, Sr.;John; Elizabeth m. Peter Schmoker; Christ of N.D.; Margaret m. John Dankert of Muscatine; Mary m. Charles Pantel; Susie m. Daniel Anthony of Keokuk Co.; Mrs. Lieberknecht: Katrina m. Louis Wiederrecht; and Ulrich d. in Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Lieberknecht had seven children but the two first born died in infancy:Hilton F. b. 6 May 1881 m. Ethel Browning; William Herbert b. 6 October 1883; an infant; Liela Mabel b. 16 March 1887 m. Harold Williams; and Anna Ruby b. 22 May 1890. Lieberknecht, Lewis (p. 491) Lewis Lieberknecht was born 20 November 1856, the son of Nicholas and Catherine (Raebold) Lieberknecht, both natives of Germany. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1841, arriving at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania where they remained for ten years and then came to Louisa Co. Their children were: Jacob, John, Henry, William; Lewis; Benjamin; Margaret, m. Nicholas Lang; and Mary m. Christ Werner. Mr. Lieberknecht married 15 January 1891 to Anna Crow, a native of Port Louisa Twp., the daughter of George H. and Eliza (Ronald) Crow. Her parents came to Lousia Co. in 1836. her father died in 1876. In her family were the following children: Harvey, Gavin; George; Mattie C. m. A. Latta of Kansas City; and Belle m. E. Hershman and Anna who married Mr. Lieberknecht. Anna died 4 December 1909. Lewis and Anna Lieberknecht had three children: Ina b. October 1893; Scott I. b. December 1895 and Donald G. b. September 1897. Lieberknecht, William (p. 112) William Lieberknecht was born in Grandview Twp., Louisa Co., on the 20 May 1854, the son of Nicholas and Catherine (Raebold) Lieberknecht, antives of Germany.(See above two accounts). Mr. Lieberknecht was married on the 15 January 1891 to Erminie Pemble, who was born in Wapello, Iowa on the 27 August 1865,; the daughter of James and Marian (Wyman) Pemble. The parents were natives of England and Vermont, respectively, were married in Illinois. Their family of nine children included the following: Charles, of Peoria, Illinois; Frank; Fannie m. Fred Kennedy;Grant d. age of 2; Mrs. Lieberknecht and Justin, twins; Ada m. Charles Johann; Raymond, of Idaho; and Earl, d. age of 20. Unto Mr. and Mrs William Lieberknecht were born five children, namely:James Max. b. 8 January 1892; William Floyd, b. 15 September 1893; Marian b. 30 March 1896; Mildred b. 23 May 1898; and Dorothy b. 10 June 1900. Lischer Lischer, Andrew (p. 75) Andrew Lischer was born in Pennsylvania on the 22 of October 1867, the son of George J. and Katherine (Mentzle) Lischer, both natives of Maryland. They came to Louisa Co., Iowa in 1868. They had five children, namely: Andrew, of this review; Sophia; Martha; Paul E.; and May. Mr. Lischer married Bessie J. Marsden, a native of Louisa County, a daughter of Henry and Bessie J. Marsden. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Lischer had one daughter Helen M. Long Long, C.C. (p. 418) C.C. Long was born in Keokuk Co. onthe 27 June 1882, the son of Jacob and Mary (Mishey) Long, natives of Richland Co., Ohio. They came to Iowa about 1866, locating in Keokuk Co. until the death of the father in December 1904. Mr. Long married in 1907 to Hulda Swanson, who was born in Iowa, a daughter of John and Anna Swanson. By 1912, they had two children, Erdean R. and Myrtle. Malin Malin, Richard H. (p. 526) Richard H. Malin was born in Washington County, Iowa, on the 16 April 1867. He was the son of James and Elizabeth (Huskins) Malin. The father was a native of Ohio and died at the age of 85. The mother was born in Pennsylvania. The subject had one sister, Stella, m. M.L.Miller of Ainsworth. He married Anna McFarland, the daughter of William and Martha (Connors) McFarland, on 27 February 1890. Anna was one of nine children: James R., Garnett, Kansas; Lena m. S.P. Telford of Whitney, Iowa; William of Washington Co., IA; John; Iva m. A.H. Essley of Washington, IA; Edward G.; Maida m. WIlliam Sampson, of Davenport, IA; and Etta. Mr. and Mrs. Malin had one daughter Myra b. 26 December 1898. Marsden Marsden, Walter F. (p. 555) Walter Marsden was born 22 October 1878, son of W.P. and Julia E. (Baker) Marsden. His siblings were: Charles, Nellie and Harry, all of whom died in infancy; Maud; and William Archie of Seattle, Washington. On January 22, 1902, Mr. Marsden married Nellie McRoberts, daughter of David and May (Smith) McRoberts. Mrs. Marsden was the eldest of seven children. The others were: Walter; Robert, of Kansas; Hilt, a veterinary of Ames, Ia; ALice; Elsie m. WIlliam McFadden ofg Washington Co.; and Ernest. Mr. and Mrs. Marsden had two childeren: Harry, b. 17 April 1905; and Hilda b. 30 October 1906. Marshall, J.L. (p. 525) J.L. Marshall was born 3 July 1861, the son of W.H. & Elizabeth Marshall. His parents were born in England and Virginai respectively, came to Louisa County in 1844; They were the parents of eleven children. Mr. Marshall married in 1892 to Dora Brown, a daughter of J.K. and Ellen Brown Marshall, Lloyd Lloyd Marshall was born 15 May 1862, the son of James H. and Nancy (Sellers) Marshall. His paternal grandfather, Lloyd Marshall came to Louisa Co. in 1838. Among his children were Eleanor, m. Newton Sellers; James Marshall, m. Nancy Sellers; Mary, m. Erastus Weaver; John s: and Robert of Colorado. James and Nancy (Sellers) Marshall had six children: Akval Gatesl Kayra n, Dave Brown; Lloyd, our subject; Sherman; and the eldest died in infancy. Mr. Marshall was married the 23 January 1880 to Annie Ireton, daughter of Obadiah and Elizabeth (Mottsinger ) Ireton. There were six Ireton children: William; Jennie m. Grank Huffman of S.D.; Joseph; Spencer and Cora Mr. and Mrs. Marshall had no children of their own, but adopted a son James Hilton Marshall. Marshall, Robert C. (p. 252) Robert C. Marshall was born 25 January 1861, the son of Clinton and Catherine (Willis) Marshall, who were natives of West Virginia and Ohio respectively. Clinton Marshall came to Louisa County with his parents in 1814. Clinton was the son of Joshua S. Marshall who died in 1883.Clinton Marshall died in October 1901 and his wife died 19 January 1902. They had ten children, but none of the women or children were named in this account. Mr. Marshall was a bachelor in 1912 and two of his sisters lived with him. Martin Martin, John H. (p. 120) John H. Martin was born in Louisa Co., 1 July 1882, the son of Elizabeth Martin. He was raised by his grandparents, John T. & Catherine Martin. No further information in the history book. Matthews Matthews, Homer A. (p. 18) Homer A. Matthews was born in Louisa County on the 6 April 1844, the son of Solomon B. and Emily (Bras) Matthews, natives of Ohio. The father was a miller who died in July 1852. The mother died in October 1882. Homer had one brother H.N. Homer served in the Civil War. On 13 ASugust 1875, he married Caroline Kimble, a native of Catlin, N.Y., a daughter of Nathaniel and Mry (Bush) Kimble, also natives of N.Y. They migrated to Boone Co., Illinois in 1851 and in 1874 moved to Louisa Co. where the mother died 16 August 1874 and the father on the 9 September 1875. There were three children: PIney, m. J.W. Willard and lived in Crook, Colorado; Caroline who married Mr. Matthews; and Ansel W. Mr. and Mrs. Matthews had six childen: Frank H. b. 22 September 1876; Ella, b. 12 August 1878 m. M. Sillick; Lena E. b. 3 September 1880; Edgar A. b. 1 July 1882; Emily M. b. 20 February 1884; and Hiram Leroy b. 1 October 1886. Matthews, H.N. (p. 505) Mr. Matthews is a brother of Homer, above and like his brother also served in the Civil War. On the 8 February 1870, he married Mary E. Brown, daughter of John and Anna (Danielsl) Brown, both natives of Ohio. Mary Brown's siblings were: Benjamin; Elizabeth m. Henry Speck of Vici, Oklahoma; Peter, lived in Alaska; Samuel; Nancy m. James P. Courtny; David; Emmett; and three who died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Matthews had four children; Emily A.,died in infancy; SOlomon; Charles F. and Fannie,m. J.A. WIlliams of Oakville, IA. May May, H.P. (p. 472) Henry P. May was born 27 December 1831, in Indiana, the son of Stephen and Malinda (Harper) May, both of whom were born in Kentucky. They came to Iowa when are subject was eleven years old. On 30 December 1855, Mr. May married Lydia Jeffreys, who was born in Union Co., Pennsylvania 24 February 1835, daughter of Mifflin and Jane Jeffreys, both natives of Pennsylvaniea. Mr. Jeffreys (also Jefferis and Jefferies) came with his family to Iowa in 1854. Eight children were born to Mr. and Mrs. May, five of whom are named in the history book: : H.S.; Eva m. W. L. Ayers; Clara, m. Charles Whitney , of Clinton, Iowa; John, and H.L. (below). May, H.L. (p. 473) H.L. May married Frona Koos on 22 November 1898. Miss Koos was born in Odin, Illinois. In 1912, they had four children: Cecilia G.; Lydia G. Francis L. and Alitha McChesney, J. S. (p. 13) J.S. McChesney was born in Mercer Co., Illinois, 11 May 1856, a son of J.T.S. and Rebecca (Clark) McChesney, the former of which was born in Pennsylvania and the latter in Ireland. The father died 12 December 1869 and the mother in January 1908. There were five children in the family, namely: John T.; Nathan C.; Ruth m. David Stephens; Margaret J. m. Dr. W.W. Nye of Hiawatha, KS; and J.S. J.S. McChesney married 15 October 1877, to Emily Mallory, daughter of Willard and Jane (Hook) Mallory. There were eight children in the Mallroy family: John B.; Mary m. Edwin Joy, of San Francisco; Edward; Charles; Frank G.; Emily; and William. Mr. and Mrs. McChesney had two children: Mary m. J.R. Cecil; and Gladys. McChesney, J.T. (p. 450) John T. McChesney was born at New Boston, Mercer Co., Illinois on the 18 December 1842 the son of J.T.S. and Rebecca (Clark) McChesney. He married the 16th of August, 1863 to Anna Collins, daughter of John and Mary Ann Collins. The parents were both born in Ireland and died when their daughter was quite young. She had one brother Thomas and a sister, Emma m. Edward McCormick of New York. McClurkin McClurkin, E.L. (p.7) Edward Logan McClurkin was born 20 August 1857,the son of Henry and Nancy J. (Logan) McClurkin, the father a native of Ohio and the mother of Indiana. T he came to Morning Sun in1855, where the father was engaged in the mercantile business and became the postmaster: They had seven children: Margaret, m. R.M. Pomery; E.L, our subject; William H.; Martin L.; Nora, and one died in infancy. He married 10 November 1881 to Cassie A. Beck, daughter of Conrad and Sophia Beck, natives of Germany, for many years residents of Des Moines Co. Unto Mr. and Mrs. McClurkin were born the following children: Oak B.; Elizabeth Jane, m. F.C. Selzer, of Detroit,Michigan; Cliffard H.; and Justus Logan. McCormick McCormick, E.R. (p.318) Edwin R. McCormiock was born in Columbus city in 1879, the son of William M. McCormick and Lizzie D. (Reiner) McCormick. The father was born in Harrison Co.,Ohio, and his mother was of Quaker belief, and tracing her ancestor back to the Prince of Wales. Lizzie D. Reiner was bron in Washington Co., Iowa the daguhter of John F. and Harriet (Maxwell) Reiner. She married William M. McCormick in Columbus City and had two sones: Edwin and another son Max J. McCormick. On 4th March 1903, Edwin R. McCormick m. Elizabeth J. Garrett, a native of Louisa county, daughter of Alexander M. (Dick) and Laura (Dill) Garrett. Her parents were both natives of Louisa Co. and were married at Fredonia. Her siblings were: Augusta Mae, m. Floyd S. Barnes of Marcus, Iowa; and J. Bertram Garrett. Mr. and Mrs. Garrett had two young daughters by 1912: Harriet b. December 1904 and Jeanette Laura b. March 1909. McCormick, M.J. (p. 452) M. J. McCormick was born at Columbus Jct in December 1887, the son of William M. and Elizabeth (Runer? see above account)) McCormick. He married 24 December 1910 to Edna H. Baker, born at Nichols, Iowa, the daughter of W.S. and Emma (Smith) Baker, who were born in New York, but were married in Muscatine, Iowa. His first wife died in1905 and in 1910 he again married. By his first marriage, he had three children: Earl S. of Wichita, KS; Bessie M.,the wife of Dr. T.L. Eland of Letts and Edna H. m. to our subject. McCullough McCullough, J.B. (p. 100) John B. McCullough was born 10 April 1828 in Rush Co, Indiana, the son of Simeon and Mary (Sydener) McCullough, who were born in Kentucky in 1794. The mother was born on the 3 May 1794 and had eleven children: William, b. 1816; Andrew; Catherine: Elizabeth; Margaret: James: John B. of this review; Simeon; Mary; Nancy; and Jacob b. 1836. Mr. McCullough married three times 1) on 30 January 1851, he married Margaret R. Wright, daughter of Silas M. and Annie (Hamiton) Wright. They had four children: Mary m. Reb. U.Z. Gilner of Warren Co., Ill; William W. of Monmouth; Silas S. d. in infancy; and Thomas b. 18 February 1864. Mrs. McCullough d. 13 November 1870, and he married 2) on the 23 October 1872 to Mary I. Davison, by whom he had two children: Roy; and Cora Blanch, who d. 12 August 1887 at the age of six. He lost his second wife on the 3 March 1901 and on the 11 November 1903, he married Alice Thomas, daughter of George F. and Elizabeth Reardon(Minton) Thomas. McCullough, R.D. (p. 528) Roy Davison McCullough was born at Monmouth, Illinois on January 23, 1875, a son of John B. and Mary I. (Davison) McCullough. He came to Louisa County with his parents at an early age and attended the Wapello schools. He married Edith Springer on the 16 December 1905. She was the daughter of Arthur Springer, author of the Lousia Co. History. She had three children: Mary E. b. 31 October 1906; John b. January 1908 and Jean b. 20 January 1910. McDaniel McDaniel, J.R. (p. 150) James R. McDaniel was born in Tennessee on17 June 1828, d. 2 October 1908 in Louisa Co. He was the son of Likens and Nancy (Wallace) McDaniel, also natives of Tennessee. His mother died when he was eighteen months old. He was thirteen years old when he came to Iowa. On 6 February 1856, he married Sarah A. Snodgrass, who was born in Ohio, a daughter of James and Clarissa (McDaniel) Snodgrass, both natives of Virginia. Her mother died in Fulton Co., Ill and her fahter later moved to Kansas where he died. Mr. and Mrs. McDaniel had three children, all deceased before 1912. McDill McDill, G.R. (p. 324) George R. McDill was born in Louisa County on 20 April1867, the son of Joseph B. and Martha (Ronald) McDill, the former born near Charleston, South Carollina and the latter in Fayette Co., Indiana. The family is of Scotch Irish descent on the paternal side and Scotch on the maternal side the early ancestors settling in Vermont. The parents of our subject were married in Louisa Co., 2 October 1850. The father died in August 1892. There were six children in the family: John d. age of 24; Mary Belle, m. Louis Agnew of Pawnee City, Nebraska; William M.; Chalmers R. of Fort Morgan, Co; Florence E. b. 1864 m. William L. Curtis, and d. 1897 and George R., our subject. Mr. McDill married on the 15 January 1902 to Elizabeth Dodder, daughter of Joseph H. and Margaret (Stineman) Dodder. The father born in New Jersey and the mother in Ohio, but they were married in Iowa. Her mother died 11 April 1901. There were five children in her family: Edward H.; Ella C. m. John E. McGrew, of Grandview; Elizabeth (above) and Myrtle m. Charles E. Rilliet of Los Angeles, CA. Three children were born to Mr. and Mrs. McDill, two of whom died in infancy, the other Margaret Marian b. 14 October 1904. McDill, W.M. (p. 180) William M. McDill was born the 17 May 1858 and was also a son of Joseph B. and Martha (Ronald) McDill. On the 26 April 1890, Mr. McDill married Alice Agnew, who was born in Johnson Co., Iowa on 5 May 1865, a daughter of William J. and Margaret (Whiteford) Agnew. Three children were born to this union: Elizabeth I. b. 28 December 2899; Florence b. 20 February 1901 and Edna May b. 11 October 1902. The father of Mrs. McDill was born in Crawford Co., Pennsylvania and the mother in Ireland. The latter came to America with her parents when whe was three years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Agnew were married in Erie Co., Pennsylvania and later came to Johnson C.. The father d. 14 October 1871 and the mother in 1884. There were seven children in the Agnew family: Margaret J. d. age 3; William d. age of 1; Martha Jane d. age 14; Samuel ; Alice; Wilson d. age of 11; and Sarah d. age of 8. McGrew McGrew, O.W. (p. 286) Dr. Oliver W. McGrew was born in Ohio on the 10 July 1873, the son of A.J. and Abbie (Armstrong) McGrew, also natives of Ohio. They lived in Ohio until 1892 when they migrated to Iowa, settling on a farm in Louisa Co. Mr. McGrew died in 1898 and Mrs. McGrew in 1911. There were six children in the family: Mary, m. E.A. Sheets of West Virginia; Addie; Oliver W., our subject; and Anna d. age 36. Oliver W. McGrew was married in 1894 to Hattie Klotz, born in Louisa County on the 5 December 1875, a daughter of T.J. and Anna (Stapp) Klotz. T he father was a native of Pennsylvania and the mother of Indiana, but they were married in Iowa. They had seven children; R.L.; Ada m. William Probst of West Liberty; Hattie (above); Effie m. J.D. Darrow; Meda m. William Blender, of Carthage, Ill; Pearl m. Levering Palmer and Paul. Dr. and Mrs. McGrew had three children: Faye b. 8 April 1895; Edwin A. b. 5 October 1898 and Carlton K. b. 28 November 1910. McKeever McKeever, James (p. 412) James McKeever was born in Ohio on the 21 November 1860 and is a son of John and Mary (Wasson) McKeever. The parents were both natives of Ireland adn emigrated to the United States at a young age. They had eight children, four deceased, the others: John; Archie; Jane m. E.W. Geadon of Illinois and James, our subject.] On the 28 September 1889, Mr. McKeever married Anna Loudin, a native of Ireland and a daughter of William and Mary A. (Purcill) Loudin. The family emigrated to the United States in1880. Mr. and Mrs. McKeever had five children: Harry A.; Maggie J.; Ruth; Ralph; and William. Mellenger Mellinger, George W.(p. 108) George W. Mellinger was born in Baden Germany on the 28 March 1828, the son of Joseph and Margaret (Hoak) Mellinger. He was one of nine children, but only one brother named in the Louisa County History, namely Michael. In 1855, Mr. Mellinger was married in Orange Co., N.Y. to Sophia Herr, also a native of Germany. They were the parents of twelve children. Barbara, m. John Kreimer of Wisconsin; Elizabeth, m. R. Linden, of Montana; Henry, Louisa Co.,; Frank, of Oakville; Margaret; John, lived in Missouri; George E.; Fred; MIchael; Rosie; Anna and Emma. Metzger Metzger, Isbon (p. 476) Isbon Metzger was born in Pennsylvania, 23 February 1837. He settled in Louisa Co. in 1853. He was married twice. He married 1) Lydia Heller by whom he had eleven children. She died in 1892 and on the 11 of September 1895, he married 2)Mrs. Amelia Strauss Simmons Darrell. Mrs. Metzger had been married twice before, her first husband was Perig Simmons by whom she had two children, Calvin and Lottie, m. Walter McRoberts. Mr. SImmons passed away in 1890 and the following year she married Duke Darrell. By her second husband, she had one son Everett Dale Darrell b. 2 February 1893. Metzger, Levi (p. 333) Levi Metzger was born 3 October 187. His parents Nathan and Sarah A. (Felenser or Fellenger) Metzger, migrated from Munson, Pennsylvania, where they were born and reared, to Louisa County in March 1868. The father died 27 January 1910 and the mother sometime after 1912. Mr. Metzger had eight siblings: Lona m. Edward B. Gipple; Matilda; Ella m. Frank Chamberlain; Jacob, Simon, David, and Edward. One died in infancy. On the 11 April 1901, Mr. Metzger married Alice M. Pierson, a native of Delta, Iowa, a daughter of Simon and Margaret A. (Root) Pierson, natives of Pennsylvania. The father was a blacksmith. They were early settlers of Louisa County and moved to Delta, Iowa where Mrs. Pierson died in1880. Mr. and Mrs. Pierson had nine children. Mr. and Mrs. Metzger had four children: Russell Lee; Nathan Ronald; Verda Matilda; and Pauline Margaret, b. 17 March 1909 and died 16 December 1909. Metzger, Simon P. (p. 361) Simon P. Metzgar was born 9 March 1874, a brother to the above Levi. On the 18 December 1895, he married Lucy Crossley, who was born in Des Moines Co., the daughter of John and Caroline Crossley. Not having any children of their own, Mr. and Mrs. Metzger took in three children belonging to her brother whom they reared: Nellie, Clarence and Lulu. Mewhirter Mewhirter, Robert R. (p. 169) Robert R. Mewhirter was born in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania, on the 18 June 1853, the son of A.B. and Mary Jane (Reed) Mewhirter, also natives of Pennsylvania. His father died in 1902, at the age of 75. He enlisted in the Union Army, Co. G., 19th Infantry, in 1862, where he served three years. There were eight children in the family: Robert R., our subject; Mattie, m. Love Erb, of Brookings, S.D.; Ida, m. Charles Jager, of Winfield, Ia; Lillie, d. in infancy; Alice; Abbie; and Minnie, m. Charles James of Columbus City, Ia. On 2 July 1881, Mr. Mewhirter married Phoebe A. Dawdy, daughter of A.R. and Mary (Gunter) Dawdy. They became the parents of four daughters and one son: Grace E., who married Joseph Toms, of Minneapolis, Minnesota and had one daughter, Frances Marion; Arthur, m. Leona Sellers and had one son, Harold E.; Jennie, Mabel, and Marion. Meyerholz Meyerholz, Frank (b. 140) Frank Meyerholz was born in Jefferson township, Louisa Co., on the 27th of March 1865, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Burchold) Meyerholz. On the 29 November 1893, he married Lenora B. Small, daughter of S. F. and Elizabeth A. (Humphreys) Small. They had six sons and one daughter: Minnie M., b. 23 May 1895; Harry A. b. 22 March 1897; Henry S. b. 25 May 1899; Earl L. b.23 February 1901; Theodore R. b. 13 December 1902; Albert E. b. 22 August 1904, d. 30 August 1904; and John C. b. 23 July1908. Fred Meyerholz was born 11 October 1857, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Burchold) Meyerholz. His father was born in Oldenburg 18 1829, and embarked on a German vessel as a cabin boy at the age of fifteen years under Captain Kern. He married in September 1853 to Elizabeth Burchold, a native of Hanover, Germany. He died 24 July 1906 and his wife died 13 February 1878. They had eight children: William; Emma, m. J.W. Lindley, of Muscatine Co.; Mary; Eliabeth; Fred; Minnie, m. Charles Shipman, of Chicago; and Charles who was a professor of history in the Woman's College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Mr. Meyerholz never married nor did his sisters Elizabeth and Mary, so they alllived together on the old home farm. Meyerholz, William (p. 191) William Meyerholz, a brother to the two gentlemen above, was born in Lousia County on 1 August 1855. In 1892, he married Lena C. Deppe, who was born in Madison Co., Indiana, on the 21st of April 1866. She was the daughter of Conrad A. and Caroline C. (Tohmman) Deppe, natives of Hanover, Germany, from which country they emigrated to the United States in 1843. Her parents were married in Cincinnati, Ohio where the father died in 1900. There were eight children in the family. Mo Mohlie Mohlie, H.F. (p. 133) Henry F. Mohlie was born 19 February 1870, the eldest son of Chris and Dora (Deppe) Mohlie, natives of Germany. The father was brought to America when he was six months old. The father was married twice. By his first marriage, he had five children: Henry, our subjectp; Emma, m. George Fore, of Wapello; Minnie; Mary, m. Chris Weigers, of ClayCenter, Kansas; and Fred. After the death of his first wife he married 2) Susan Glanders and they had two children: Wesley, of Clay Center, Kansas and Andina, who married Charles Kline, of Clay Center. On the 14 December 1898, Henry Mohlie married Mary Jacobs, daughter of John and Mary (Morris) Jacobs in whose family were six children: David; Thomas; Ellen, m. James Biggs; Elizabeth, Mary, above; and Robert. Molsberry Molsberry, F.M. (p. 15) Fred M. Molsberry was born at Plymouth, Iowa on 22 May 1866, the son fo Joseph M. and Jemima Jane (Pitman) Molsberry. The father was a native of Indiana and moved to Michigan in 1856. At Niles Michigan, he married Ms. Pitman. They came to Iowa and first lived in Cerro Gordo Co. He was elected to the State Senate in November 1901. In August 1893, Mr. Molsberry married Cora Oliver, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, daughter of E.W. and M.J. Oliver. Mr. and Mrs. Molsberry had one daughter Effie Lucille. Moore Moore, J.J. (p. 243) Joseph J. Moore, was born 27 June 1854, the son of Frank J. and Lucinda (Duncan) Moore, natives of Tennesse. He was the eldest of ten children. He married 27 February 1879 to Nettie E. Baird, daughter of John and Mary (Acheson) Baird, natives of Ohio, who came to Louisa Co. in 1854. There were nine children in her family. Her father died 23 January 1899 and the mother on 4 March 1896. Mr. and Mrs. Moore had three children: Bessie Beuletta b. 14 March 1881; Nellie L. b. 9 October 1885; and Frank A. b. 30 September 1892. Moore, R.M. (p.523) Robert M. Moore was born in Louisa County on 31 July 1848, the son of Mitchell and Margaret (Orr) Moore, both natives of Tennessee. They came to Iowa in 1842. On the 12 September 1872, Mr. Moore married Lizzie J. Baird, a daughter of John and Mary (Acheson) Baird. There were nine children in the Baird family: J. Calvin; Lizzie J.; Euphemia m. W.W. Orr; Thomas L of Ringgold Co.; Nettie m. J. J. Moore; Ella; Lina; Emma; and Sherman. Mr. and Mrs. Moore had four children: Mary; Maggie; Lilly and J. Fred, who was a principal of schools at Columbus City. Morgan Morgan, J.E. (p.254) John E. Morgan was born in Louisa Co., on the 24 August 1875, son of John M. and Ann J. (Lewis) Morgan, both born in Wales. They came to America in 1844 and had four sons: Louis; John E., of this review; Albia of S.D.; and Thomas. Mr. Morgan was married in 1896 to Rachel Davis who was born in Lousia Co. on the 24h of May 1872, one of a family of six children born to D.D. and Jane (Jones) Davis. The parents,natives of Wales came to this country in 1850, first locating in New York where they lived unti l1869. The mother passed away in 1895. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Morgan were born three children, as follows: Mildred Jane, b. 18 February 1898; Wendel D., b. 22 June 1900; and Donald E. b. 6 August 1905. Moyers Moyers, G.W. (p. 378) G.W. Moyers was born 12 April 1849, the eldest son of Samuel N.and Lucinda H. (Deen) Moyers, pioneer settlers of that county. The father was born five miles north of Carrollton, in Greene Co., Illinois and came to Iowa in 1839, locating first in Des Moines Co. until 1884, at which time he moved to Mediapolis, Ia. On the 11 of November 1869, Mr. Moyers married Rebecca A. Pence, the daughter of Jonathan and Polly (Tootwaler) Pence, both natives of eastern Virginia, whence they removed to West Virginia at an early day. Her father served in the Third Virginia Volunteer Army during the Civil War and after two years at the front died of exposure. The mother died in 1848. Mrs. Moyers came to Des Moines County with her brother in law, Martin Deen, his wife and her sister, when she was nineteen years old. She was the youngest of three daughters, the others were: Margaret E., the wife of D. Shumacher of West Virginia; and Mary V., the wife of Martin Dean, of Cass Co., Ia. Mr. and Mrs. Moyers had ten children: Samuel L.; Mary L., the wife of George Dotson; Pearl Alfred; Hattie May,the wife of Samuel Walker; Cora Ellen, married Frank Hamilton; James Burton, of Des MOines CO.; Gertie Edna; Edward Nelson, Robstown,Tx; one died in infancy; and Hally Roy married Martha Catherine Baxter and had a son Dwight b. 16 August 1909. Muller Muller, Peter (p. 341) Peter Muller was born in the Rhine Province, Germany,on the 3 November 1856. His parents, Peter and Caroline Muller, were also born in Germany where the father died 4 July 1897 at the age of 68. There were four children in the family: Peter; Carl, Bowling Green,Ohio; Julius, Germany; and Phillip d. in Germany in 1888. Peter was seventeen years old when he came to America seeking his fortune. He landed in the United Stated on 17 September 1873, locating first in Danville, kentucky where he was a baker for ten months. He then migrated to Springfield, Ohio. He later came to Postville, Iowa and operated a bakery for twelve years. While in Postville, he married Albertina Kammine, on the 12 October 1879. Mrs. Muller was also a native of Germany, b. 28 October 1859, the daughter of Henry and Louise Kammine. Her parents emigrated to the United States in 1873 and located in Allamakee Co. The father died there in July 1909 and the mother died 27 March 1911. Mrs. Muller was the eldest of three children. Her sisters were: Tillie m. Paul Topel, Allamakee Co.; and Amelia m. Fred Duebel, of Allamakee Co. Mr. and Mrs. Muller had no children of their own but adopted two, Lemma and May A. Newell Newell, H.R. (p. 349) Hugh R. Newell was born in Louisa County on the 12 June 1883, the son of Thomas and Mary (Dowson) Newell. In December 1907, Mr. Newell married Sarah M. Shellabarger, daughter of Thomas B. and Sara M. (Westlake) Shellabarger. Mr. Shellabarger died in March 1897. There were seven children as follows: Roy; Sevilla d. age 6 months; Mrs. Newell; Perry; Thomas E.; W. Ralph and Russell B. Mr. and Mrs. Newell had three children but the first two, twins, died, unnamed. Thomas Herbert was born 26 September 1909. Newell, R.F. (p. 331) Robert F. Newell was born in Wayne Co., Ohio, on the 20 February 1818, the son of Thomas and Harriet D. (Flaherty) Newell, who were born, reared, and married in Ohio. There were six children in the family: James, d. in Iowa age of seventy; Mary m. William Paulins; Samuel d. in Black Hawk Co; Margaret m. Alexander Finley; Thomas and Robert, of this review. On the 31 December 1843, on the banks of the Des Moines River at Eddyville, Iowa, Mr. Newell married Christina Newell, a native of Ohio, and a daughter of Hugh and Elizabeth (McNay) Newel, who were both born in Kentucky and celebrated their marriage in Ohio on 9 September 1809, having gone to Ohio in 1808. Unto them were born ten children: Malinda m. Walter Clement; Jane m. Benjamin Ginn; Robert; Mrs. Newell; Lucinda m. Benjamin Fuston;James; Mary m. Levi Hayes; John; Amanda m. Jacob Kiser; and Hugh. Robert and Christina Newell had nine children: Elizabeth m. Dr. Henry Cushman; Thomas; Caroline m. Louis A. Riley; Hugh d. as an infant; Mary m. E.S. Curtis; John; William; Robertr M.; and Harriet m. B.F. Sidman. Newell, R.W. (p. 196) Robert W. Newell was born 15 February 1861, the son of Thomas and Sarah J. (Mock) Newell, the father a native of Ohio and the mother of Pennsylvania. Ten children were born unto Mr. and Mrs. Newell: Elizabeth m. George Hensley; Josephine, m. Thomas Wiser; Hugh T.; Samuel P.; Robert W., of this sketch; Benjamin; Ida M.; William; Vira; and Abe. The father died 27 September 1899, at the age of seventy-six and the mother died the 24 April 1905, at the age of seventy-two. On the 29 February 1888, Mr. Newell married Minnie Hannan, a daughter of William and Louisa Hannan, who were the parents of the following children: Walter C.; Jefferson; Annie m. Elmer Smith, of Burlington; John; Minnie, above, who died 16 April 1892; Mary m. WIlliam Hill; Edward; Louden; Dora; and Edith m. Alfred Pillling. Mr. and Mrs Newell had three children, but only two survived, Mina I.,the yongest died in infancy; Grace; and H. Stanley Newell, Thomas (p. 268) Thomas Newell was born in Lousia County on the 7 April 1847, the son of Robert F. and Christina Newell. His grandfather, Thomas Newell, was a soldier of the war of 1812, and his maternal great grandfather, James Flaharity, served under General George Washington in the Revolutionary War. His father died 12 May 1898. On the 5 April 1877, he married Mary Dowson, the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Robson) Dowson, who were born, reared and married in England,from which country they emigrated to the United States in 1849. Her father was from Cumberland Co. and her mother from the city of Sunderland. When they arrived in this country, they located in Cincinnati. They came to Columbus Jct. when they retired in 1893 where Mrs. Dowson died 16 January 1894. Mr. and Mrs. Dowson had eleven children: Jane m. C. Bonnichsen; Mary m. Thomas Newell; Robson; John; William; Charles Henry; three died in infancy; Thomas; and Florence E. Mr. and Mrs. Newell had seven children: Mary C, m. Rudolph Schlichting; Robert J.; Hugh R.; Jesse D.; Thomas R.; Edwin O.; Frances B. Newell, W. S. (p. 256) William S. Newell was born 5 July 1857, the son of Thomas and Sarah J.(Mock) Newell, a brother to Robert W. Newell, above. On the 16 November 1898,he married Carrie Kennedy,daguhter of Joseph C. and Martha (Kennedy) Kennedy. There were seven children in the Kennedy family: William; Minnie, m. Herbert McCormick; Annie m. John Berg, of Olds, IA; Carrie, above; Maggie; Sadie; and Clarence. Mrs. Newelll;s mother died in 1890 and her father in1901. Mr. and Mrs. Newell had two children: Blanche Eliza b. 9 December 1899; and Dorothy Mabel b. 5 October 1902. Nyemaster Nyemaster, Rex (p. 78) Rex Nyemaster, a native of Wapello, Iowa, was born 17 October 1886, the son of J.L. and Fannie (Mahlinger) Nyemaster. There were five children in their family: Ray; Lea; Rex,of this review; Oak; and Ona. Mr. Nyemaster was married to Esther Wilton, a daughter of Theodore and Lena (Richley) Wilton. they had one daughter, Helen, b. 5 June 1908.
