Oats was born in Louisa County on 18 May 1872, a son of John W. and Isabel(Duncan) Oats. The father died in November 1908; There were six children in the family: two died in infancy; Maggie, m. Alba McBride; Ira, of htis review; Ada, m. J.D. Hamil, of Washington County; and Arnold D. On the 12 December 1894; he married to Gertrude Smyley, the daughter of Joseph Taylor and Ella (Orris) Smyley. Gertrude had a brother Robert. Mr. and Mrs. Oats had three children: Reuben A., b. 7 September 1895; June V. b. 7 September 1898; and Ruth V. b. 31 December 1905 OCHILTREE Ochiltree, Thomas J. (p. 493) Thomas J. Ochiltree was born in Louisa County on 1 June 1842, the son of Henry M. and Margaret Ochiltree. His father was born 9 February 1809, a native of Virginia, and the mother was born 10 October 1815, from South Carolina. They were married in Ohio 4 January 1838. The father died 5 September 1877 and the mother on 30 October 1887. Thomas was one of nine children, but only two brothers named in the historical account: Marshall; and Henry M., lived in Haddam, KS.; Thomas J. Ochiltree married ELizabeth Brown, also a native of Louisa County, on 27 June 1869. She was the daughter of J.C. and Mary J. Brown. Five children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Ochiltree: Stanley; Jennie, m. A.J. Pooley, of Chicago; William T.; and two who were deceased. OHLWEIN Ohlwein, Conrad (p. 197) Conrad Ohlwein was born in Germany on the 26 October 1844, the son of Henry and Elizabeth (Kroch) Ohlwein. Conrad's siblings were: Henry, lived in Highland Park, Illinois and John in Chicago. His sister Elizabeth died in infancy. On the 29 July 1869, he married Catharine Ohlwein, daughter of Christian and Elizabeth (Zeibert) Ohlwein. She was one of five children, the others being: John; Elizabeth, wife of Henry Ohlwein, who lived in Germany; Henry and Adam who remained in Germany. Conrad and Catharine had eight children: Elizabeth; Annie, wife of Lee Hunt of New Boston,Illinois; John, also lived at New Boston; Henry lived at Colorado Springs, Colorado; Mary, wife of Charles Creaton of Oakville; Lizzie, married Fred Pulver, also of Oakville; Edward Conrad, of Oakville and one died in infancy. ORCHARD Orchard, Anderson (p. 65) Anderson Orchard was born in Kentucky on the 15 October 1821, the son of John and Anna (Park) Orchard who moved to Brown Co., Illinois, in 1832. On the 9 February 1843, he married Caroline Emrick, born in Mead Co., Kentucky on the 12 August 1828, the daughter of John and Rebecca(Legg) Emrick, her father, a native of Virginia and her mother of Kentucky. They moved to Brown Co., Illinois in 1830 Mr. and Mrs. Orchard had six children: Columbia Jane; Josephine, m. WIlliam Shewey, of Red Oak; John E., of California; Robert R., California; Lucinda, m. Robert Oberman of Des Moines Co.; Augusta, m. Henry Elliott, of Mouint Pleasant; Ella; Franklin, lived at Trenton, MO; Clara Bell, m. Charles Plunket, of California; Hugh A., Cedar Rapids; Eliza, m. John Musock, of Los Angeles; and Edith Mary , m. Grant Shutter of Morning Sun. Orr Orr, George W. (p. 201) George W. Orr was born 2 June 1846 in Des Moines Co., the son of Jefferson P. and Parthenia (Trent) Orr. The father was a native of Virginia and the mother of Kentucky. They moved to Illinois in 1825 and, in 1836, they came to Iowa and settled first in Des Moines Co. The mother died 30 July 1888. There were eleven children in the family. Those named: John William; Mary m. William Archer, of California; Elvira m. Jonas Sames, of Jones Co., IA; Elizabeth m. Lewis Bishop, of Des Moines Co.; Paulina, m. William Ping, of Des Moines Co.; Sims; Martin; James; Anderson; Thomas and George W., of this review. On 26 November 1868, Mr. Orr married Catharine Hines. They had two children: Carrie Izona, who married Frank Ulm, of Louisa Co. and had a daughter Mary Leona b. 24 September 1897; and Lizzie Irue m. J.A. Miller of Louisa Co. who had two children, George Connell, d. age of 22 mo. and Frank Darrow, b. 14 April 1911. Orr, Harvey (p. 128) Harvey E. Orr was born 27 June 1853, a native of Washington County, son of Francis G. and Elizabeth (Johnston) Orr. His paternal great grandfather, Thomas Orr, was one of the pioneers of Washington Co., Tennessee. There, his son, William Orr, the grandfather of our subject was born. William Orr was reared in Washington Co., Tenn. and when a young man went to Blount Co. where he married Mary Walker, whose father, John Walker served as a recruiting officer in the Revolutionary War. William and Mary Orr had the following children: Jane F.; John W. who died at Conesville, IA in 1886 at the age of seventy six years; Josiah J., Francis G., Robert H.; Mary, who died in infancy; Lucinda Adeline, who married Joseph Johnston of Columbus City; William W.; Esther Ann, m. James H. Johnston, and Nancy Jane, who m. David C. Hammel of Washington, IA. Jane F., the eldest of the children was married twice 1)Thomas J. Johnson, of Madison Co., Alabama and 2) John F. McConnell. She died in Louisa Co. at the age of eighty years. Francis J. Orr was four years old when he moved to Monroe Co., Tennessee with his parents. In 1846, he came to Columbus City township, Louisa Co., but thereafter purchased eighty acres near Crawfordsville, Washington Co. , IA in 1848. In 1852 he married Elizabeth J. Johnston and two years later lost his wife and an infant son. He lived with his brother W.W. Orr, until after the marriage of his son, Harvey E.. He died in 1896. On 2 October 1878, Mr. Orr married Mahala Duncan. They had three children, two who survived: Gary and Ira. The mother of the children died 23 February 1885 at the age of twenty seven years. Mr. Orr married 2) 21 April 1887 to Mary E. Duncan, the daughter of James A. and Melinda J. Duncan. To them were born five children: Lulu; Eva; Helen; Harold; and Edith. Mrs. Orr was the sixth of nine chilren, the others were: Joseph; Margaret A., m. W.J. Grimes, of Allerton; Nancy J., m. Robert O. Johnson, of Garnett, KS; William, d. in infancy; Emma F., m. Isaac A. Endsby of Col. Jct.; Flora, m. W.D. Pyles of Col. Jct.; Lou m. W.E. Murdock and Charles R. Otto Otto, John Henry (p. 280) John Henry Otto died the 21 February 1910. He was born in Marthasville, Missouri, now called Hopewell, in August of 1835. His parents were Henry and Elizabeth (Rolfe) Otto, both natives of Hanover, Germany. He was one of nine children: one d. in infancy; George, of Portland, Ore.; Louisa m. F. Feigenbaum of Wauneta, KS: John Henry, our subject; Hortense, m. Henry Droegemeyer of Burlington; Christian and William, deceased; Herman of Wapello and Mary m. Henry Wagoner of Ankeny. On the 11 August 1859, Mr. Otto married Charlotte Annie Weckman, daughter of John and Elizabeth (Ringler) Weckman. She had a brother Frederick. Mr. and Mrs. Otto had eight children: Otto, the youngest d. in infancy; Henry; Edmund; George F.; WiIliam; Leona; Anna Charlotte, m. L.W. Gerth of Wyaconda, Missouri and Herman Peter. Otto, WIlliam (p. 285) William Otto was born 6 May 1868, the son of John H. and Charlotte Anna (Weckman) Otto. On the 12 July 1894, he married Ellen Limbocker, daughter of J.P. and Amanda (Fish) Limbocker. There were nine children in the Limbocker family: Anna E., m. W.A. Henderson of Page Co.; Elmer; Eva, m. J.J. Graner of Henrietta, TX; Carrie m. Edward Graner; Harry; Ellen, m. Mr. Otto; John L. ; Clyde L. and Ernest Ray. Mr. and Mrs. Otto had three children: Helen M. b. 27 July 1897; one d. in infancy; and William, Jr. b. 8 March 1911. Owens Owens, John (p. 414) John Owens was born in the north of Wales, a son of Owen Owens. He came to Louisa County in 1860 wen he was eighteen years old. Mr. Owens was married in 1852 to Jane A. Williams b. in south Wales and came to America in 1842. They had three children: Ellen N.; Mrs. Harriet B. Schock of Columbus City; and R.E. Mr. Owens died in 1897. Parsons Parsons, Abe (p. 130) Abe Parsons was born in Louisa County on 2 October 1861, the son of T.M. and Mary (Hale) Parsons. The father was a native of Virginia and the mother of Ohio. He came to Iowa in 1835 and she in 1840. The father died 2 May 1902 and the mother 23 October 1906. In 1908, Mr. Parsons married Mrs. Jessie L. (Hook) Parsons, the widow of D.D. Parsons. She was also a Louisa County native, born 26 August 1861. Her parents were G.W. and Emily B. (Trask) Hook and were natives of Virginia and Illinois, respectively. Her father died 13 November 1895 and her mother on 31 January 1910 at the age of seventy three. In her first marriage Mrs. Parsons had three children: Talmar, born 6 July 1882, married John Diehl;Mary Pearl, born 23 January 1885, married R.R. Hunt; and Dean H. born 7 June 1895. Parsons, Joseph J. (p. 98) Joseph Parsons was born in Hardy Co., West Virginia on 19 November 1819, son of Jonathan and Agnes (Nevill) Parsons, also natives of West Virginia. Four children were born to them: H.J. N.; Joseph J.; Mary C., m. M.T. Denison; and Asdrubel S. Mr. Parsons married three times: 1) Martha A. Smith, a native of Kentucky in 1851. She died four years later in 1856 and he married her sister 2) Sarah E. Smith, who died the following year. On the 27 October 1859, he married Mary E. Coleman, who ws also a native of West Virginia, the daughter of Fleming and Lydia A. (Smith) Coleman. Her father was a native of Virginia and the mother of Ohio. They came to Iowa in 1852 where the mother died in 1860. Later Mr. Coleman married Mrs. Mary E. Crane of Muscatine Co. Mr. Coleman died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Parsons, 13 January 1898 at the age fo eighty four. Eleven children were born to Mr. Coleman's first marriage, three still surviving in 1912: T.B.S. Coleman; ;Mary E. (above); D.F.; Luella m. C.G. Terry, of Muscatine. Mr. and Mrs. Parsons had four children: Douglas D., b. 1 December 1861, d. 12 January 1904; Olive T. married William C. Smith; Asdrubel H.; and Walter F., born 7 July 1870, d. 4 February 1872. Pearsall Pearsall, P. L. (p. 19) P. L. Pearson was born 12 December 1886 in Linn Co., the son of J.H. and Susan (Shaffer) Pearsall, who were born in Indiana and Iowa, respectively. The mother died in 1907 at the age of fifty nine. There were seven children in their family: Cora, married W.T. Clark, of Sherwood, North Dakota; Ella married W. M. Brown, of Walker, IA; Lewis, Center Point; Edith, m. H.J. Crosmer of Tripp, S.D.; Agnes, m. O.D. Church, of Conde, S.D.; P.L. of this review; and Lotta m. Frank Routh of Wapello. On 15 April 1907, Mr. Pearsall married Lena Davis,daughter of Oscar and Inez (Battleson) Davis, in whose family there were two children, the other was Mamie. Pease Pease, Harry O. (p. 219) Harry O. Pease was born 14 April 1866. His parents, Henry S. and Fernanda (Jackson) Pease, natives of Maine and Pennsylvania, respectively, came to Louisa County at an early day. In their family were the following children: Harry O.; Eugene H.; and Henrietta, married W.B. Kemp, of Washington, IA. On the 24th of September 1902, Mr. Pease married Clara Archibald, who was born in Louisa Co., the daughter of Rufus and Martha Archibald. She was one of seven children. Mr. and Mrs. Pease had two children by 1912: Sharon A. and Lola M. Pemble Pemble, James (p. 144) James Pemble was born in the town of Biddenden, Kent Co., England, on 5 November 1831, the son of Daniel and Anna (Breakfield) Pemble, both natives of England, who emigrated to the United States in 1840, first locating in New York. The father died a year later. There were eight children in the family. He married at the age of twenty three to Marian Wyman, born in Peru, Vermont, on the 5 June 1838, the daughter of Oliver and sallie (Aldrich) Wyman, also natives of Vermont, who moved to Peoria Co., Illinois in 1852. They were the parents fo six children. Mr. and Mrs. Pemble had nine children, six sons and three daughters as follows: Charles E., Peoria, Illinois; Frank D., Wapello; Fannie M., m. F.L. Kennedy, of Peoria; James G. died in infancy; J.D. and Erminia, twins, the former lived in Idaho and the latter married William Lieberknecht of Louisa Co.; Ada L. m. C.W. Johann, of Wapello; Ray H., Lillian, Idaho; and Earl M. b.rn 14 April 1874, d. 15 Janaury 1894. Peters Peters, Richard (p. 287) Richard Peters was born in Wales on the 2nd of April 1853, the son of Lewis and Jane (Humphrey) Peters, who spent their entire life in Wales. They had seven children. In 1876, Mr. Peters married Gwen Davis, who ws born in Wales, and to them were born nine children: Jane, married Arthur Williams, Nebr.; Anna, married John Arthur; Lewis; Ruth m. E. Arthur; R.J.; Elizabeth; Isabel; Mary ; and Daniel. Pine Pine, A.F. (p. 447) A.F. Pine was born in Virginia on 13 November 1861, son of Floyd and Virginia (Kelley) Pine, who spent their entire lives in Virginia. They had six children. Mr. Pine was an orphan by the time he was six years old. He came to Louisa Co., in 1879 at the age of eighteen. In 1886, he married Mary E. Skipton, a native of Louisa Co, and a daughter of Joseph and Mary (Devore) Skipton, who were born in Ohio and Virginia, respectively, and came to Iowa at an early day. Our subject and his wife had twelve children, as follows: Ethel G., m. Alfred Schibilion; Ernest A.; Gertrude M., m. Harry E. Spaethe, of Eldon, Ia; Floyd J.; Walter L.; Herbert H.; Virginia J.; William T.; Dollie DImple; Helen E.; Ralph H.; and Halley R. Porter Porter, J.A. (p. 506) J. A. Porter was born in Louisa County on the 5 February 1857, the son of Hugh and Lydia (Maloney) Porter, both natives of Ireland. They first located inNew York and came to Louisa Co. in APril 1855. The father died on the 19th of January, 1895. His wife died 12 June 1879. They had eight children: Isaac T., S.D.; J.A., our subject; Annie, m. R.H. Wheeler; John D., Orange, Calif.; Isabel; James; Mary; and an infant, the eldest, died young. On 31 December 1885, Mr. Porter he married Olive C. Thompson, daughter of Andrew and Elizabeth (Willis) Thompson, to whom were born ten children: Mary Harkness, of Creston; a dau. d. in infancy; nancy J., m. J.H. Armstrong, Texas; Robert N.; William L., resident of Central Point, Ore.; Ella, m. Dr. Grimes of Wapello; Lois, m. W. D. Garmoe, of Winfield; Olive and Oliver, twins; and Jay F. Mr. and Mrs. Porter had three daughters: Frances; Mary L.; and Hazel E. Preston Preston, Sylverius S. (p. 351) Sylverius S. Preston was born in Licking Co., Ohio, 24 October 1872, the son of Benedict and Rachel (Fringer) Preston, both natives of Ohio, in which state they married and lived for thirty years and then moved to Kansas for two years before coming to Iowa. The father died in1901. They had seven chidlren: Judson; Lanetta, liv. Okla; Ruth Anna; Sylverius S., our subject; Zelora, res. of Illinois City, Ill; Gertrude; and one died in infancy. On 31 December 1901, Mr. Preston married Pearl Ryan, who was born in Conesville, Iowa in 1883. Mrs. Preston was a daughter of J. and Emma (Wiltrout) Ryan. The mother died when Mrs. Preston was four years old and the father died in 1897. Mr. and Mrs. Preston had two children: Reba Viola born 28 February 1903; and one died in infancy. Rabe Rabe, Edwin S. (p. 558) Edwin S. Rabe was born in Muscatine Co. on 14 October 1869. his parents were Copeland and Ludia A. (Fletcher) Rabe, the father a native of Ohio and the mother of Iowa. There were six children in the family: William, Axtell, KS; Edwin S., our subject; Jesse, Haskill, CO; Alpha; Zelpha, m. Charles Monroe of West Liverty; and Leila, m. Chester Grigg of West Liberty. On 27 December 1897, Mr. Rabe married Lucille Idle, born in 1872 in GrandView township, the daughter of Frank B. and Mary E. (Brumley) Idle. Her father was a native of Ohio and her mother of Virginia. In the Idle family were the following children: Newotn, Boycourt, KS; Clara m. H.L. Shear of Cedar Falls; Nancy m. James Small of Letts; Ollie, Boycourt, KS; and Lucille, (above). Mr. and Mrs. Rabe had one son Maurice E. b. 5 June 1906. Rahmiller Rahmiller, Frederick (p. 229) Frederick Rahmiller was born in Germany on 5 December 1839, son of Frederick and Mary (Bekemeyer) Rahmiller. The family emigrated to America in 1845, settling temporarily in Little York, Pennsylvania. They arrived in Iowa sometime in the '50s. Mr. Rahmiller married Louisa Arning and had seven children, namely, Henry; Frederick C. of Buchanan Co.; William of Bard; Herman; Rose,m. John Adamson; Louisa m. Lewis Cutcomp; and Mary. The mother of the children died in 1885 and in 1890, Mr. Rahmiller m. 2) Mrs. Harriet (Hall) Bond, the widow of John Bond. By her previous marriage, she had four children. She was the daughter of Isaac and Elizabeth Hall, both born in Pennsylvania. Reaney Reaney, Robert J. (p. 277) Robert J. Reaney was born 21 July 1856, in County Tyrone, Ireland, the son of Joseph and Eliza (Turkington) Reaney, both born in Ireland. The father emigrated to America in 1862, taking up residence in Chester, Pennsylvania. In 1871, he arrived in Louisa Co. where he remained until his death in 1888. There were eight children in the family: Robert J., of this review; Thomas, Waterloo; Samuel, S.D.; Mary, m. Michael Blankinhorn; Joseph L., also of Waterloo; Elizabeth Ellen, m. Edward Thompson. In January 1877, Mr. Reaney married Belle Eliason, who was born near Letts in Muscatine Co, a daughter of Levi and Mary (Epperly) Eliason. Mr. Eliason was a native of Indiana. There were eight children in the family. Mr. and Mrs. Reaney had five children: Elsie M.; James E.; Roy W.; Agnes B. and Louisa E. Reddick Reddick, George W. (p. 519) George W. Reddick was born in Adams Co., Ohio on the 7th of July 1866, the eldest son of William H. and Rachel A. (Stahl) Reddick. The father a native of Indiana and the mother of Decatur, Illinois. The family came to Iowa in 1876, locating near Kossuth where they remained for two years and then moved to Northfield for another two years and then moved to Newport where they remained for seventeen years. The father died in Muscatine Co. in 1903. He was veteran of the Civil War in Co. E., Thirty-third Ohio Volunteers. Mr. and Mrs. William H. Reddick had eight children besides our subject: Clark T., Centerville, KS; Emmer L., Muscatine Co.; Jackson A.; Frank G., Muscatine; Lilly M., m. Marion Frizzell, of Grangevile, Idaho; Merritt, Muscatine; William H.; and Leora D., m. Clark Altakruse, Muscatine Co. Mr. Reddick married Della M. Shaffer, daughter of Jacob and Sarah (Pontjius) Shaffer, on 21 May 1893. There were the following children in the Shaffer family: George E.; Della M.; Frank H.; Etta R., m. Albert Babbitt; William D.; Stella E., m. Stanley Honts; James R.L.; and Charles W. Mr. and Mrs. Reddick had seven chidlren; one d. ininfancy; Vinnie G.; Cecil F.; George C.; Harrold D.; Jessie S.; and Cleda R. Rees Rees, Rowland (p. 352) Rowland Rees was born in Louisa Co. on 13 February 1863, son of John A. and Elizabeth (Morgan) Rees, both natives of Wales. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1843. The father died in September 1898 and the mother in 1868. They had nine children, only the four living in 1912 are named: John M.; Catherine N., the wife of Richard Jenkins; Mary E., the wife of Hugh J. Davis; and Rowland of this review. On ` October 1885, Mr. Rees married Margaret Humphrey. She was born iin Wales,daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Humphrey, who emigrated to the U.S. in 1881. Their family numbered twelve children. The father died in1909. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Rees were born thirteen children: Elizabeth; Sarah E.; Mary M.; Margaret W.; John H.; Edward R.; Harold I.; Robert O.; William McKinley; Henry I.; Evan M.; Catherine E. and Howell A. (See Cambrian cemetery records for more on these Welsh families.) Reutinger Reutinger, Joseph (p. 134) Joseph Reutinger was born in Baden, 5 March 1852, the son of Frank J. and Lamberta (Grieser) Reutinger, both of whom died in the old country. They were the parents of five children: Mary, who came to this country and married George Fath; Louisa, stayed in Germany; Josepyh; Carl, of Chicago; and Stephania. Mr. Reutinger married Mary Keck on the 21st of May 1879, the daughter of Johnb Philip and Christina (Tuffensammer ) Keck. There were eight children in the Keck family: Mary; Amelia, m. Edward Tellman; Lousia, m. H.A. Weber; and Flora m. W.E. Fielman of Monmouth, IL Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Reutinger: Amelia, m. August Berkhoff; Jospehine; Lisetta, m. Edward Cotter, of Mt. Pleasant; Philip; Della; and Charles. Richards Richards, Humphrey (p. 363) Humphrey Richards was born in Wales, 1 September 1850, son of Lewis and Catherine (Jenkins) Richards. The father died in 1863, one year after his wife, leaving a family of ten children: David, Council Bluffs; John, Higbee, MI; Humphrey, of this review; Mary Ann, m. William Trentham and d. in London, England; Lewis of Wayne Co., Nebr.; and Richard of Birmingham, Ala. Mr. Richards arrived in Louisa Co. early in 1875. In the spring of 1875, he married Mary Williams, born in 1857, in Lousia Co., the daughter of Richard Williams, who was a native of Wales and came to Louisa Co. He died when Mrs. Richards was only six months old. There were five children in the Richards family: Catherine Ann, m. William Roberts,of Washington Co.; Celia Jane, m. John O. Jones, Clay Co.; Amy; David John; and Edwin. Ritter Ritter, Harvey E. (p. 321) Harvey E. Ritter was born in Louisa Co. on the 25th October 1880, son of Louis B. and Catherine (Wagner) Ritter, natives of Virginia and Lousia Co. respectively, their marriage taking place in Louisa Co. The father died 25 April 1904. The mother m. 2) C. Utter, a native of New York, retired of Letts. Mr. and Mrs. Louis B. Ritter had three sons: John, m. Louise Liebbe, of Muscatine Co. by whom he had one child, Evert, b. ca. 1910; Harvey E. , of this review; and Walter of Letts. On the 28 March 1906, Mr. Ritter was married to Ina M. Wagner, who was born in Louisa Co., 10 April 1885, daughter of Isaac and Eliabeth (Blake) Wagner. The parents were born in Pennsylvania and Iowa respectively and resided in Louisa CO., the father died 20 January 1911; and the mother 23 January 1903. In their family were four children, two who died in infancy and the surviving brother of Mrs. Ritter was Fred Wagner. Robb Robb, Wilson (p. 546) Wilson Robb was born in Clark Co. on the 25 February 1875, his parents were Wilson and Jane L. Robb. The father was a native of Indiana and the mother of Ohio, but they came to Iowa early and lived at Osceola. They had nine children: Ernest, Decatur Co.; Cora m. T. Shelton, of Osceola; Jennie, m. Isaac Norman, of Decatur Co.; Forrest, lived in Nebr.; Wilson, our subject; Hattie m. William CLyde, of Nebr.; Jay; Charles; and one died in infancy. On the 8th of November 1893, Mr. Robb married Mary Pearl Jamison, daughter of J.W. and Rachel (Vaughn) Jamison. Five Jamison children: Tuttle G., Oakville; Isaac, Morning Sun; Hulda J., m. D. Kremer, Wapello; Minerva m. T.A. Dotson; and Mary m. Wilson Robb. Mr. and Mrs. Robb had five children; Lizzi Ita,whose twin brother died in infancy; Chelcie D.; Oma May ; and Brigham Orval. Roberts Roberts, B.M. (p. 539) B.M. Roberts was born 12 May 1863, in Muscatine Co., and was the only child of Moses M. and Fannie Roberts. The father was a native of New Hampshire and the mother of Iowa. On the 18 August 1886, Mr. Roberts married Mary E. Wallace, born in Washington Co., the daughter of William and Margaret Wallace. Her father, a native of Ohio, and her mother fo Iowa. They were married in Washington Co. Mrs. Wallace died in June 1908. They had three children: Seigel, of Iowa City; Mrs. Roberts; and James P. of Rock Island, IL. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts had seven children: Della May born July, 1887, m. John Waltz; William M. b. 1889; Sadie P. b. February 1894; James M. b. January 1898; Daisy M. in July 1899; Bonnie P. in May 1905 and Albert Leo, died in infancy. Roberts, John J. (p. 429) John J. Roberts was born 26 October 1858 in Columbia Co., Wisconsin, the son fo John H. and Jane (Williams) Roberts, both born in Wales. They emigrated to America in 1845. In 1864 they moved from Wisconsin to Louisa Co. There were three children in the family: Mary; John J. and Ellen m. H.A. Davis of Louisa Co. Robertson Robertson, Jennie (p. 53) Jennie Robertson, was born in Lousia County on 10 May 1864, the daughter o fJohn and Keziah R. (Duncan) Robertson. Her maternal grandfather, A.J. Duncan came to Louisa Co. in 1848 and purchased land for ten dollars an acre. Her father was born in Ohio and came to Louisa Co. as a boy with his parents. He died 8 May 1886 at the age of forty eight. There were ten children in the Robertson family: Clara; Jennie, of htis review; James M.; William A.; Samuel G., of Morning Sun; Margaret M.; Thomas; Harry A.; Nellie; and John J. Robinson Robinson, Samuel (p. 79) Samuel Robinson died 26 January 1888, was born in County Antrim, Ireland and was the eldest in a family of five children, namely: Samuel; Gordon; William; Eliza; and John. Mr Robinson migrated to the U.S. in 1850 and spent two years working in Pittsburg, Pa., after which he went to Wheeling, West Virginia, about 1852. He subsequently moved to Burlington. In Washington, Pennsylvania, on the 20 th December 1855, Mr. Robinson married Rossannah McCoy, daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth (Frazier) McCoy, both natives of Virginia. They were the parents of eight children: Ellen, m. Adie Bell, of W.Va.; William; Samuel; Jane m. William McCoy of W. Va.; Margaret, m. William Slater, of Pennsylvania; Rossannah, widow of Mr. Robinson; James, Pittsburg; and Hamilton/ Unto Mr. and Mrs. Robinson were born four children: Elizabeth Jane, m. John Alexander; Alletta J. , m. Mathew McCune, of Colorado; William, of Morning Sun; Annie M., m. Andrew Alexander. Rogers Rogers, Edwin C., M. D. (p. 188) Edwin C. Rogers, M.D. was born in Jersey Co., Illinois, on 1 October 1872, the son of S.W. and Harriett (McKinstry) Rogers, natives of Illinois. His siblings were: Flora and John W. His parents came to Iowa in 1882, first locating in Lee CO. On Christmas Day, 1896, Dr. Rogers married Louisa Harrison, daughter of Thomas C. and Mary (Fox) Harrison. Her father was born in Ohio and her mother at Knox Co., Illinois. Dr. and Mrs. Rogers had one son, Harrison E. Rogers, born 19 January 1908. Rold Rold, E.C. (p. 187) E.C. Rold was born in Warren Co., on 2 January 1882,his paretns were Christ and Mary Rold, natives of Germany. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1875. There were ten children in their family. Mr. Rold was never married, thus, no descendants. Ronald Ronald, John (p. 557) John Ronald was born at Ryegate, Caledonia Co., Vermont, 12 July 1799, son of George and Elizabeth (Smith) Ronald, the former born in Sterlingshire, Scotland, and the latter in New Hampshire. George Ronald (or Ronalds) emigrated to America in 1786 and lived at Ryegate Vermont, with Robert Brock, Sr. and his wife and Jean and Elizabeth Miller. Elizabeth Miler was the thrid wife of James Nelson of Ryegate and married Edward Miller about 1789. In 1789, Mr. Ronald married Elizabeth Smith, a daughter of Joseph Smith. He died 5 September 1821 at the age of sixty one. John Ronald, of this review, married Martha Killough, on 10 October 1822, a native of South Carolina and a daughter of James and Jane (Hayes) Killough. Her father was born in Scotland and her mother in Ireland. They married in Ireland and came to America, locating in S.C. where the mother died. In 1810, Mr. Killough mvoed to Ohio with his children and died about two years later. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald became the parents of ten children, only three are named: Mrs. McDill the eldest was b. 23 February 23, 1825; Emely (sic) born 3 December 1836, m. J.P. Walker of GrandView; and Caroline m. Dr. Lilly of Chicago. Mr. Ronald died 22 February 1872 and his wife died seven years later in December 1879. Ross Ross, M.C. (p. 174) M.C. Ross was born in Grandview Township on 27 April 1866, the son of Oscar and Mary A. (Lindsey) Ross, natives of Kentucky and Iowa respectively, marrying in Iowa. His mother died in 1883. He was one of seven children, the others: Elmina and Mary d. young; Myra died age 38; Evert died age 11; Millard died age 17; and Emma d. age 22. M. C. Ross married 16 March 1898 to Emma Doderstrom, born in Muscatine Co., who died three years after her marriage. They had one son: Oscar M. born 13 October 1899. On 24 June 1908, he married 2) Pearl Furnace, of Letts, daughter fo M.P. and Ella (Curtis) Furnace. She had two siblings: Etta, m. J.H. Garrett, of Concord Township; and Frank. By his second marriage Mr. Ross had two children born in February 1911, one died at birth and the other died at age 3 months. Ross, Thomas (p. 200) Thomas Ross was born in Brown Co., Ohio, on 17 January 1846 (this is the correct date, the history book is wrong) and his parents were John and Deborah (Ireton) Ross.The parents were both born in Ohio where the father died in 1882. In 1871, Mr. Ross married Ella Simons, the daughter of Louis and Nancy Simon. Mrs. Ross was born in Louisa Co., but her parents came from Germany to America. There were three children in their family. Mr. and Mrs. Ross had thirteen children: Nora, m. A. J. Cox; Arthur E., Henry Co., IA; Herman E., also Henry Co.; Clara, m. Oscar Linden; Nelson; John E. Chester; Carl, Crawdon, Jessie and Laura and two who were deceased. Russell Russell, Alva C. (p. 31) Alva C. Russell, was born in Louisa Co., 9 November 1867, the son of Willaim S. and Isabell (Kurts) Russell, the father a native fo Iowa and the mother of Pennsylvania. The father died the 23d of December 1910. They had two other children: May, m. T.L. Bailey; and Myrtle. On 21 January 1892, Mr. Russell married Zoie E. Gates, the eldest daughter of S.E. and Mary (Ogle) Gates. They had three children: Lillian, b. 22 August 1893; Gred, b. 29 August 1898; and Letha, b. 2 of April 1903 and died 2 March 1910. Russell, Robert C. (p. 434) Robert C. Russell, was born in Des Moines Co., on 31 July 1851, the son of David and Mary Ann (Smith) Russell, the father a native of Adams Co., Kentucky, and the mother of Ohio, her birth occurring on 16 February 1813. They were married in Fulton Co., Illinois and two years later moved to Des Moines Co.. They had seven children: Elizabeth, m. F. Sharar, of Muscatine; Louisa; William, a Civil War Vet; Frances, m. H. Dixon, of Mediapolis; Ellen, m. James Cox; Robert C., our subject; and Cassie A. Mr. Russell married twice, the first time to Mary Rogers who died 5 December 1887. They had four children: Vinnie, m. A. Ferris, of Oakville; Frank G.; Bessie A., m. William McFadden of Lone Tree; and Mary Lou, b. 23 November 1887 and died 2 February 1896. He married 2) on 26 October 1889 to his wife's sister, Alice E. Rogers. Two children were born to them Robert E. b. 15 March 1891; and Elwood Paul, b. 24 January 1901. Schafer Schafer, John Robert (p. 353) John Robert Schafer was born in Nebraska, 11 October 1874, the son of John and Annie (Hucke) Schafer. His mother died 28 December 1910. His siblings were: Emeline and Clara, twins, the former died in infancy and the latter at the age of twenty four; Emma E. died age 42; Martha Elizabeth m. William Beik of Grandview; John Henry; John Robert, our subject; and George F. At the age of twenty, Mr. Schafer married O. Nevada Collins, on 22 November 1894, the daughter of K.B. and Eliza J. (Springer ) Collins, the mother a native of Ohio and the father of West Virginia. They had eleven children: Maggie, Effgie, Josie; Everette, George H., and a pair of twins d. in infancy; Charles W. of Kits Caty, Alberta, Canada; Miinta C.; O. Nevada, m. Mr. Schafer; and Della May. Mrs. Collins had been married before, her first husband was James Humphrey. They had two children James and Lydia. Mr. and Mrs Schafer had seven children: Orpha G. b. 23 September 1895; Franklin C. b. 18 February 1897; Irma C., b. 4 February 1898; Verle Van, b. 7 May 1900; Iva May b. 9 October 1901; Norval Paul b. 6 September 1903; and Martha Helen, b. 22 October 1905. Schaper Schaper, C.J. (p. 186) C.J. Schaper was born in Stephenson Co, Illinois on the 19 July1870, the son of Frederick and Amelia (Lutteroth) Schaper, natives of Germany. His father came to America at the age of thirty years, landing in Baltimore, Maryland, 7 January 1852. From there he went to Pittsburg, Pa. and later to Randolph Co., Illinois. He subsequently went to Stephenson Co., where all his children were born. He had married Amelia Lutteroth, 4 April 1854. She was born 17 April 1831 in Germany and came to America with her mother in the fall of 1851, landing at New York. She lived at Grand Decatur, Illinois with her mother and brother and there met Mr. Schaper. He passed away 27 September 1894 when seventy three and she died 23 June 1898 when sixty eight years old. There were nine children as follows: Henry F.; John; August; Edith m. Orville Nuckolls of Pasadena, California; William, of Floyd Co.; George I. Hancock Co.; C.J., of this review; Rosie M., m. John Tanner of Hancock Co.; and Lewis E. who lived with his brother C.J. Mr. Schaper was married 15 March 1900 to Rosie Siegrist, one of twelve children born to John and Marie (Scaugg) Siegrist, the others were: Mary m. Alfred Timmons, of Floyd Co.; Louisa, m.Andrew Immer, also fo Floyd Co.; Anna; William, twin to Rosie; John; Emma m. William Burgmann of Plattville, Wisc.; Lena, twin sister to Emma; Lena m. Amiel Buehler of Whittier, Calif; Kate, m. Reynold Thurow of Floyd Co.; Edith m. William Klauges, also of Floyd; and Paulina of Chicago Illinois. Mr. and Mrs Schaper had three children: Lillian A. b. 25 Februrya 1901; Chester A., b. 10 September 1903; and Raymond C. b. 19 May 1906 Schleichert Schleichert, Gottlob (p. 297) Gottlob Schleichert was born in the province of Saxony, 17 September 1843, emigrating to the U.S. in 1873. His parents and siblings remained in the old country. He died 6 January 1911. On 14 October 1873, in Louisa Co., he married Lena Stock, also a native of Germany that he had become acquainted with on the boat. Her mother had passed away in the old country in1872, but her father was living at Red Cloud, Webster Co., Nebr. when he died in 1898. Mr. and Mrs. Schleichert had four children: Otto; Lydia, m. Harley Krahl; Amelia, m. Orlen Kemp;and Elma m. Oliver Hoffman. Schneider Schneider, George J. (p. 77) George J. Schneider was born 30 December 1861, son of Louis and Elizabeth (Schneider) Schneider, natives of Germany. The parents were married in New York, following which they came to Iowa. There were eight children in the family: Louis; Louisa m. Jacob Schneider, of GrandView; Henry; George J., our subject; Daniel; Barbara; Sarah; and Mary. The mother was born in 1823, d. 4 March 1877 and the father died after 1912. On the 4 April 1894, Mr. Schneider married Musa Graham, born near Wapello, 11 February 1874, daughter of Daniel and Fannie (Hart) Graham. The father was a native of Ohio and the mother of New York, but they were married in Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Graham had eleven children: Clarence W.; Lillie, d. age six; Musa, m. Mr. Schneider; Daisy, d. age twenty months; Harry L.; Myrtle, m. W.A. McGill; Charley; Nannie, m. Lee Warner, of GrandView; Harold; and Lucille. Mr. and Mrs. Schneider had five children: Floyd Warren, b. 1 June 1895; Raymond Louis, b. 26 October 1896; Howard Daniel, d.age five y. 6m. 26d; Ermil Nellie b. 24 October 1903; and Kenneth george b. 13 November 1905 Schofield Schofield, George Washington (p. 68) George Washington Schofield was born near Brookville, Franklin Co., Indiana on 12 March 1841, son of Joseph and Charlotte (Cemister) Schofield, born near Manchester, England, the mother was born in 1806 and the father in 1897. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Schofield as follows: the eldest died in England; Aaron, of Windom, Minn; Elizabeth m. 1) Matthew McClung and 2) Elisha Dobbs; Isaac; Mary m. 1) William M., Herron and 2) a Mr. Tucker; G.W., our subject; Charlotte, b. 1843, d. 1873; Samuel b. 1845, d. 1857; and Emeline L. m. George Raucher. The mother died in 1882 and the father died in 1892. Mr. Schofield married Cassie Williams, a native of Louisa Co., in April 1888,but she only lived about fourteen months, dying in June 1889. The one child born, died in infancy. On 28 December 1893, Mr. Schofield m.)2 to Analetta Hamilton, also a native of Louisa Co., daughter of Alexander and Susanna Hamilton. The parents were natives of Ohio, where they lived subsequently to coming to Iowa. The mother died in 1898 and the father survived until after 1912. Mrs. Schofield was the eldest child in her family, the oters were Alonzo G.; Davilla; Frank; Bertha; George B. and Charley. Schomberg Schomberg, Fred (p.301) Fred Schomberg was born in Louisa Co. on 11 December 1878, the son of Jacob and Catherine Schomberg, both natives of Germany. They came to the U.S. in 1850. In December 1905, Mr. Schombert married May Chown, a native of Louisa Co., and daughter fo George and Mary Chown, who were born in Virginia and Iowa respectively. Mrs. Schomberg taught school for several years before her marriage. They had three children: Florence L. Alice L. and Catherine E. Schweitzer Schweitzer, Charles (p. 559) Charles Schweitzer was born near Grand View on 20 August 1880, the son of Henry and Mary (Phifer) Schweitzer, the former a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and the latter of Louisa Co. They had eight children: William E.; Henry H.; George E.; Dell Arthur; Charles; Albert; Oscar; and Daisy. On the 1 March 1905, Mr. Schweitzer was married to Marcia Chambliss, daughter of Jeff and Elizabeth Chamblis. They had two daughters Vivian, 4 yrs old and Loleta, 1 yr old in 1912. Schweitzer, Henry H. (p. 454) Henry H. Schweitzer was born in Louisa Co. on 14 September 1872, the son of J. H. and Mary (Phifer) Schweitzer, the father a native of St. Louis and the mother of New Jersey, but they were married in Louisa Co. (See brother above for siblings with exception of omitted above name Vinnie who died at the age of 13.). On the 21 November 1900, Mr. Schweitzer married Katie Beik, who was born on the 18 July 1880, the daughter of Jacob and Alurdo (Hanley) Beik. They had four children, one dying in infancy, the others: Marie b. 12 April 1904; Jacob b. 1 Augut 1906 and Erma b. 8 April 1909. Schweitzer, William E. (p. 455) William E. Schweitzer was born 26 August 1871, also a son of J.H. and Mary (Phifer) Schweitzer. On 19 May 1909, he married Edna Williams, born in Muscatine, 15 December 1875, the daughter of J.. and Nancy (Webster) Williams, the mother a native of Ohio. Her siblings were: Walter W., a missionary in China; one died in infancy; and H.R. who lived at Grandview. Mr. and Mrs. Schweitzer had a son Paul William b. 29 June 1910. Searl Searl, Frank Stacey (p.279) Frank Stacey Searl, proprietor of the Central Hotel at Oakville, was born at Toolesboro, Louisa Co. on 26 November 1862, the son of Robert and Eliza Searl, who were natives of Ohio and Iowa respectively. His father was a horse dealer. There were eight children in the family: William, Dayton, Ohio; Frank S., of this review; Charles, proprietor of a button factory at Keithsburg, Illinois; Lydia, d. as a young girl in1880;Fannie E., m. H.L. Hoffmeier, of Chicago; and George who was a chef in Kansas City, MO. Mr. Searl married twice. He m.1) Minerva Livingston, daughter of Robert and Minerva Livingston, of Illinois. By his first wife he had one daughter, Irma Elaine, born 30 April 1894. Nine months later, the mother passed away. He m. 2) Sophia Herr, daughter of George Herr. They had four children: a son b. 4 November 1902, d. the following day; Friend Stacey, b. 31 October 1903; Feh (?) Maxine, b. 7 March 1905; and Robert Herr Lloyd b. 76 October 1910 Sellers, John A. (p. 57) John A. Sellers was born 1 July 1836 in Clark Co., Ohio, the son of Warner and Maria (Bates ) Sellers, natives of Ohio. They migrated to Louisa Co. in 1844. They had eight children: John A.; Nancy m. John Marshall; James d. in Civil War; Rebecca m. Joseph Allen; Reese Sellers; Irene m. Henry Freeman;Harriet m. Eli Webster; and Albert. On Christmas 1857, Mr. Sellers married Hannah Lunbeck, daughter of Isaac and Eliza (Marshall) Lunbeck and they became the parents of the following children: Homer; Robert; Andrew; Annie; Eva m. William Root (Rutt); and Lillian, m. Lew Green of Mt. Pleasant. Mrs. Sellers died in May 1896. Sellers, Reese (p. 58) Reese Sellers was born 23 February 1844, the son of Warner and Maria (Bates) Sellers. See above account for details. Mr. Sellers married Mary Elizabeth Weaver on 5 November 1868. She was the daughter of Erastus and Mary (Marshall) Weaver. Her mother was a native of Ohio, and was born in the vicinity of Xenia on 30 April 1829. She married Erastus Weaver on 20 December 1847 and they became the parents of nine children: Mary E.; Laura and Annie, both died in infancy; Emily Frances, m. W.H. Darrow; Lucy, m. Sam Briggs; Clara m. Dr. Allen; H.O.; Henrietta. m. August Salmon; and Alice died in infancy. Mrs. Weaver died 16 November 1898 and was buried by her parents in Fulton Cemetery. (Marshall plot) Mr. and Mrs. Sellers had the following children: Aldivne; Frank; William D.; Leona m. Arthur Mewherter (Mewhirter) and George. Sheafor Sheafor, C.D. (p. 90) Clark D. Sheafor was born in Butler Co., Ohio on 28 October 1858, the son of Haden and Rebecca (Vanscyok) Sheafor. The father was a native of Kent, Ohio, migrating to Clark Co., MO with his family in 1859. They had seven children, three of whom were: Mary K. m. George Shaw of Wapello; Sarah E. m. Samuel Herlick of Oakville and our subject, Clark. In February 1891, Mr. Sheafor married Amelia Spitznogle, daughter of John H. and Sarah (Shaw) Spitznogle. Mr. and Mrs. Sheafor had four chidlren: Delmar G.; Desdemona G.; Cornelia M.; and Abie Rebecca Shearer Shearer, B.H. (p.17) Brainard H. Shearer was born 15 December 1881 near Ida Grove, Iowa, the son of Jacob I and Laura (Plasterer) Shearer, both natives of Franklin Co., PA. The father was born 15 September 1856 and the mother 26 November 1856. They had five children: Brainard, of this review; Bessie; Florence; Frances; and Harold. The paternal grandfather Henry Shearer ws born and reared in Franklin Co., PA. The maternal grandfather John Plasterer lived to be ninety years old. Shellabarger Shellabarger, C.B. (p.339) Charles B. Shellabarger was born in Louisa Co., on the 24 April 1855, the son of Thomas B. and Matilda M. (Browning) Shellabarger. The father was born in Clark Co., Ohio, 25 April 1815, died 7 May 1898 and the mother in Gloucester co, New Jersey, 25 November 1827, died 31 May 1908. They were married in Iowa and had seven children: Matilda J., died age 18; Jacob L.; Charles B., of this review; Thomas B.; William B. married Mary Walker, daughter of George Walker; and Harvey M. married Louisa Cross. The grandparents came to Iowa in 1837. On the 13 September 1877, Mr. Shellabarger married Izula Whistler, daughter of Elder Isaac and Elizabeth (Garretson) Whistler. Her father was born in Pennsylvania, 14 June 1816 and her mother in Ohio, 22 May 1818. They were married 21 March1847 in Ohio and came to Louisa Co. shortly thereafter. Mr. Whistler died 17 March 1889 and Mrs. Whistler died 21 October 1869. They had four children: John d. 7 August 1877, when 29 yrs. old; Mary C., d. 3 July 1895; Eveline married F.P. McNamar, of Waukon Junction; and Mrs. Shellabarger. Mr. and Mrs. Shellabarger had six children: Harry A., b. 13 July 1878, d. 3 May 1901; Egbert b. 21 August 1879 married Lena Blankenhorn, native of Louisa Co., and the daughter of Charles and Rosa Blankenhorn; Charles B., b. 7 July 1884, d. 2 July 1886; Lela F., b.26 August 1886, m. William E. Whicher of Aurora, S.D.; Egbert and Lena Shellabarger had three children, namely: Charles, b. 3 August 1903; Viola b. 7 February 1905; and Violet b. 4 May 1907. William E. and Lela F. Whicher had two children: Harry Leo, b. 24 July 1905 and Paulina E. born 1 March 1909. Sink Sink, Wililam (p.142) William Sink was born 11 January 1871, son of Chesley and Anna S. (Dennison) Sink. The father was born in Virginia and the mother in Illinois. There were eight children in the family, two of whom were: our subject and Ida m. William Shaw of Wapello. On the26 January 1893, Mr. Sink married Rachel Crim, a native of Louisa Co and a daughter of Charles M. and Louisa M. (Foster) Crim. No children named. Siverly Siverly, E.W. (p. 74) Edward W. Siverly was born 12 June 1876, the son of Geoge and Mary (Furnas) Siverly who were married in Louisa Co. On 16 September 1891. Mrs. Siverly passed away. Mr. Siverly m. 2) Isabelle Trine. Edward W. Siverly was the third in order of birth of five children. The others were: Della M., m. Fred Morrison of Johnson Co.; Olive E., m. Clarke Faires, also of Johnson Co.;Maud M. m. Frank Loehr of Albert Lea, Minnesota; and S. Isabelle m. Less Hill. Edward W. obtained his dentistry degree in 1897 at Iowa City. On the 20 September 1899, he married Minnie D. Holland, born in Louisa Co. 29 September 1877, the daughter of Samuel and Catherine (Myers) Holland. Samuel Holland died 12 May 1888 and Mrs. Holland died 20 November 1908. They were the parents of two daughters, Mrs. Siverly and Nellie D. m. Thomas Delzell of Morning Sun. Siverly, I. S. (p. 202) I. S.Siverly was born 24 May 1836, son of E.W. and Nancy (Jordan) Siverly, the former born in New York and the latter in Brown Co., Ohio. The parents were married in the east and came to Iowa in 1838. They were the parents of fifteen children, some of who were: I.S. of this review; L.L. of Ringgold; George of Johnson Co.; E.W., Jr. of Wapello; Frank, of Arizona; Augusta m. F.F. Curran of Morning Sun; Amanda m. George Smith of San Francisco, Calif; and Eva married A.E. Baldridge of Wapello. On the 10 January 1867, Mr. Siverly married Mary A. The mother of these children died 18 April 1896 and is buried in the Rice Cemetery. John R. Siverly had two children by his first marriage: Hazel born 19 January 1902 and Ruth b. 18 October 1905. They lived with their grandfather after the death of their mother. Robert E. Siverly had four children: Guy W.; Jessie Marie, Fred, and Pauline William S. Siverly had one child, Violet, by his first marriage, and one child, Ernest L. by his second wife. James A. Siverly had one child: Arthene. Georgia M. Siverly and her husband Arthur Wilson had four children: Roxey; Mary , Harold and Verne. I.S. Siverly married 2)30 October 1901 to Mrs. Rachel Boorn, native of Louisa Co.and a daughter of Lafayette and Emma (Rice) Boorn. Her parents were both natives of New York state. By her first marriage, Mrs. Siverly had a daughter Jessie Marie, b. 28 April 1895. Sligh Sligh, James (p.51) James Sligh was born in Northumberland Co., England, on 9 August 1834. The parents, names not given, who were natives of Scotland came to America in 1850 locating in Westmoreland Co., Pennsylvania. They had six children: Archibald; James, our subject; Helen m. John Peters of Westmoreland Co.; two who died in England and one who died in Scotland. Mr. Sligh married 17 March 1864, to Eliza Reed. She was the eldest child of Robert and Martha (Barr) Sligh, natives of Pennsyulvania and hte parents of seven children as follows: Eliza(above) and her twin brother William; James; Margaret, stayed in PA; Mary Jane; John; and Samuel. Mr. and Mrs. Sligh had three children: Martha Alice; Harry Reed, of Wapello; and Helen Margaret, who died in infancy. Small, H.N.P. (p. 407) H.N.P. Small was born in Maine on the 28 August 1836, the son of James G. and harriet (Mitchell) Small. The mother passed away in 1863 and the father in 1848. Five children were born unto Mr. and Mrs. Small: Martha, d. in infancy; John H., Chicago, IL; H.N.P., our subject; James L., Stanford, Calif: and Isaac L. who was killed at the siege of Vicksburg, during the Civil War. About one year after the death of his wife, Mr. Small m. 2) Lepha Clark of Ottumwa, who died four years later. Two years later he married 3) Mrs. Cook, a widow living in Moline, IL. She died 1909. He was seventy eight years old when he died the 12 December 1883. After Mr. Small died On the 13 June 1860, H.N.P. was married to Louisa Williams, who was born in New York State on the 11 June 1845, the only daughter and youngest child of Jeremiah W. and Elizabeth (Bosweth) Williams, both natives of Connecticut where they were reared and married. Mr. Williams died in 1848. Mr. and Mrs. Williams had six children, the five sons were: Daniel E. , d. age seventy six; Ira; Edward R., seventy one when he died; Edward and Edwin, twins, born in 1837, the former died in 1902 and the latter in 1907. To Mr. and Mrs. Small were born six children, four of whom are named: Harriet M. 22 July 1865, m. F.H. McDaniels of Oskaloosa; Gertrude L. born 17 February 01867 m. Dr. A.J. Weaver of Muscatine; James Grant, b. 14 December 1868; Martha E. b. 15 September 1861, d. 29 March 1896, and m. George Wagner; Henry L.L. b. 29 March 1863, d. 15 July 1864 and Mary, b. 1 February 1873, the youngest, who married A.W. Morgan of Muscatine. F.H. and Harriet McDaniels had one child: Matie. Gertrude L. and her husband Dr. Weaver had a child, Ida A. James Grant married Nannie Idle of Letts and had four children: Arthur H.; Mollie; Alice; and Horatio N.P. Smith Smith, E.P. (p. 276) Earl P. Smith was born 26 November 1887, the son of William C. and Olive L (Parsons) Smith,the father, a native of Henry County, IL; and the mother of Jefferson Township, Louisa Co. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had three children, the other two were D. Howard and Nellie. (See also William C. Smith account below) On the 14 September 1909, Mr. Smith married Helen Wiederrecht, daughter of George and Lizzie (Hanley) Wiederrecht, both natives of Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Wiederrecht had four children, the other three were: Daisy m. Frank Johnston of Columbus City; Lela, a teacher; and Joseph Fred. Mr. and Mrs Smith had one son in 1912 William C. who was named for his grandfather. He was born 9 July 1910. Smith, J.C. (p. 9) J. C. Smith was born in Louisa Co., 3 April 1856, the son of William S. and Caroline (Smith) Smith, who were natives of Pennsylvania and Ohio, respectively. They came to Louisa Co., in 1838. Mr. Smith died 9 February 1873, and his wife died 19 April 1903. They had twelve children. J.C. Smith married Eliza Frizzell, the daughter of J.O. and Eliza (Webster) Frizell, who were born in Ohio and came to Louisa Co. in 1836. The Frizell's had nine children. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had one daughter, Eliza Berdella, who married R.L. Singleton, by whom she had two children: Alma and Roy. Smith, W.C. (p.43) William C. Smith was born 10 October 1864 in in Henry Co.,IL.,the youngest son of David H. and Esther (Sornberger) Smith. The father was born in Morgan Co.,Ohio on 7 January 1834, the fourth child and eldest son of six children of Nathan and Susannah (Howard) Smith. They were natives of Pennsylvania and moved to Ohio where they died. In Lafayette Co., Wisconsin, on 25 October 1855, David Smith married Esther Solrnberger, who was born 31 March 1831 in Delaware Co, NY, the daughter of George and Hannah (Olmstead) Sornberger, also natives of NY. By this union were born six children: Howard H., Houston, TX; Charles M., Boone Co.; William C., of this review; Myra E., m. O.A. Hommersand of Houston; Ella d. age 2; and Kittie who d. age 5 months. The parents came to this county in 1904 to make their home with their son William and the father died 24 December 1909. The mother died at the home of her son Charles in Albany, MO. 16 September 1905. Mr. Smith married Olive L. Parsons of Jefferson Twp., Louisa Co., the daughter of Joseph J. and Mary E. (Coleman) Parsons, natives of West Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Smith had three children: Earl P., b. 25 November 1887; D. Howard, b. 21 December 1893; and Nellie, b. 28 July 1897. Smylie Smylie, R.F. (p. 538) Robert F. Smylie was born in Washington Co., IA, on 17 July 1885, the son of Josiah T. and Phoebe (Orris) Smylie. The parents are both natives of Iowa and lived in Columbus City. They had two children: Gertrude, m. Ira Oats, and Robert, of this review. On 20 December 1906, Mr. Smylie married Mabel Duncan, daughter of John Calvin and Martha (Sands) Duncan. The grandparents of Mrs. Smylie were John and Rachel (Duncan) Duncan. They were natives of Tennessee and came to Iowa in 1846. There were ten children in the family, three named here: Francis M. Robert Nelson; and John Calvin. John Calvin was born in Tennessee the 6 September 1845 and was brought here as an infant. He served in the Civil War when he was only sixteen years old. He was twice married, his first wife dying, 20 April 1876, after which he married Martha Sands in 1881. She was the daughter of Nathaniel and Sarah (McCall) Sands. In the Sands family were nine children, namely: William McCall; Henry; John; Amanda; Eliza; Elizabeth, m. F.M. Duncan; Zachariah; Francis; and Martha (Mrs. Smylie). Martha and Mr. Smylie had two children: Martha Ellen b. 6 October 1908 and Farrell Duncan b. 12 November 1910. Snyder Snyder, B. F. (p. 109) B. F. Snyder was born 9 August 1887 in Muscatine Co., the son of John and Phoebe (Griffin) Snyder. His parents were born in Pennsylvania and Ohio respectively. They were married in Iowa. They had two sons, our subject and his brother Charles C. Mr. Snyder was married 24 November 1910 to Lulu May Van Horn, who was born in Louisa Co. on the 4 March 1884. (See also the Van Horn biography) Snyder, C.C. (p. 467) C.C. Snyder was born 9 February 1885 in Muscatine Co, the son of John and Phoebe (Griffin) Snyder. On the 27 December 1907, he married Martha C. Cox, the daughter of Joseph J. and Evelyn (Williams) Cox. Evelyn (Williams) Cox died 2 August 1906. They had five children: Nicey, m. James E. Gray; Aurelius m. Christie McKay and lived in Neck City, MO; Minnie m. J.H.Rhyme, of Roy, NM; Lulu also of Roy, NM and Mrs. Snyder. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder had two daughters by 1912, namely Evelyn Ruth b. 27 January 1909 and Lulu Ellen b. 25 September 1910. Snyder, Daniel (p. 390) Daniel Snyder was born in Louisa Co. on the 13 November 1849, the son of Philip and Rebecca (Thomas) Snyder. The father was a native of Germany and the mother of Pennsylvania where they were married in1844. They came to Louisa County in 1848. They had nine children, five of whom are:George; Daniel, our subject; John; Julia m. John Wagner of Letts; and Reuben. On the 6 June 1882, Mr. Snyder married Mary Wittwer, a native of Switzerland, which also the birthplace of her parents, Christian and Anna (Street) Wittwer. She died 14 January 1903. Mr. Snyder m. 2)27 January 1904, Mrs. Elizabeth Reet Burris, the widow of Leonard Burris, and a daughter of Nelson and Caroline (Van Wagoner) Reet, natives of Ohio. Her father passed away in 1887 and her mother, 14 December 1910. There were nine children in the Reet family: J.S.; Elizabeth (Mrs. Snyder); A.F.;Elmeda m. Lee Buel; Solomon; William; Rachel; Hannah and Melissa. Mr. and Mrs. Snyder had six children, viz: James M.; Caroline; Margaret; Gertrude; Leonard and an infant, unnamed. Spaeth Spaeth, John (p. 220) John Spaeth was born in Germany, 26 December 1848, a son of Claus and Catharina (Grimm) Spaethe. The mother died in Germany and the father came to America in 1873. In the family, there were six children: Claus, who d. age of two years; Anna m. George Smith of Calif; John; Adolph and William, twins; and Ferdinand. On the 25 September 1873, Mr. Spaethe married Henrietta M. Knight, daughter of Curtis and Nancy (Lewis) Knight, both born in Vermont. The father came west in 1832 and took up land on the spot that is now Rock Island, IL during the Black Hawk War. He worked as a scout for General Winfield Scott. He returned to Vermont where he was married. He died in 1857, his wife had died the previous year. There were six children in the family: Stephen, died as an infant; Stephen, the second; Triphosa; Lizzie; and Mrs. Spaethe. Mr. and Mrs. Spaethe had eight children: George d. October 1902; Emma E. m. W. M. Randolph, of Eldon; Curtis; Helena m. Loyd Brown; Harry, Eldon; Charles; Frank; and Glen. Sprague Sprague, C.A. (p. 63) C.A. Sprague was born in Cherry Valley, IL 3 February 1856, son of A.G. and Lucena R. (Farley) Sprague, both natives of Ohio. The parents were married in IL. In August 1862, he enlisted as a private in Co. D 24th Inf and was sent to the south. He was killed in the battle of Champion's Hill, 16 May 1864. Mrs. Sprague remarried to a Brooks. In their family were four children: C.A., of this review; Ella D. m. J.E. Teeter, of KS; Lottie L.; and James A.The family moved to Washington Co., Ia when our subject was only an infant. The family traces its ancestry back to the early colonial settlers and has variously been spelled Sprech, Sprake, Spragg, Spragge, and Sprague. The first member of the family of whom an authentic record has been found was Edward Sprague, a resident of Upway, Co. of Dorset, Elngland, and a fuller by trade. In an article by ___ Barr entitled "The Old Northwest" the descent of the Sprague family is indicated successively by Edward, William, Joshua, Sr.; and Joshua, Jr. Joshua, Jr went to Marietta, OH in 1788 and settled at Waterford, Washington Co. where he died in 1816. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War. His son Jonathan Sprague was born 9 January 1767 at Sackville, Nova Scotia. the first wife of Jonathan Sprague was Sabra Seamans whose parents Gilbert and Martha (Alger) Seamans were married in Providence Rhode Island, on the 25 June 1758. Among the children of Joshua and Sabra Sprague was Anthony Wayne Sprague, the grandfather of our subject, who married Lucinda, the daughter of Allen and Ruth (Benentt) Duval. Their son A.G. Sprague was the father of our subject, C.A. Sprague. In 1878, Mr. Sprague was married to Alice C. Glasgow, daughter of Robert B. and Matilda J. Glasgow, both born in Ohio. Three children were born: R. Wyatt, Seattle, Wash.; Mazie m. the Rev. A. Graham, of Burlington; Arthur, past superintendent of schools at Waitsburg, Wash. The mother of the children died 31 January 1896. Mr. Sprague remarried in October 1899 to Minnie Davidson, daughter of Archibald and Sarah (Akin) Davidson, both natives of Pennsylvania. One child,who died in infancy was born to this marriage. Stapp Stapp, John J. (p. 170) John Jacob Stapp ws born in Columbus City Twp., Louisa Co., 15 December 1856, the son of Reuben and Sarah A.(Reece) Stapp. The Stapp family traces its ancestry to Germany,adn the progenitors in America arrived in the colonies preceding the Revolutionary War. A great-grandfather of the subject served in this war. Jacob Stapp the grandfather was born in Pennsylvania where he spent his entire life and married Anna Berry. There were three children in the family: Reuben; Caroline m. Jonas Diehl; and Mary m. William Klotz. Reuben Stapp was born in Lehigh Co., PA; 15 December 1821. In 1844, he moved to Tippecanoe Co,IN where he married Sarah A. Reece on 28 December 1848. Sarah was the daughter of John and Jane (Nichols) Reece. In 1853, he brought his family to Louisa Co. Mr. and Mrs. Reuben Stapp were the parents of twelve children: Anna m. T.J.Klotz; John Jacob,of this review; Ada L. and Ida L., twins, the former m. J.S. Blair and the latter m. J.J. Duncan; George B.; Cora m. Sherman Willey; and Garry and Harry, twins. Four children died in infancy: Thomas, Caroline, Mary E. and Amanda. On the 24 December 1878, John Jacob Stapp married Flora A. Ogier, daughter of Thomas and Nancy (Grimes) Ogier, both natives of Ohio.Six children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Stapp: Harry R. of Dayton, OH; Elsie,m. Frank Letts d. of Clarendon, TX; Nancy m. Harry R. Owens of Longmont, CO; J.Jay; Mona and Mary Stapp, J. Jay (p. 451) Jay J. Stapp was born 20 January 1887, son of J.J.and Flora (Ogier) Stapp (See lineage above.) Mr. Stapp married 23 August 1911 to Margaret Mary Donovan of Longwood,CO. Stephen Stephen, Levi (p. 139) Levi Stephen was born 1 January 1812, in Preble Co., OH. His father Richard Stephen was of Welsh descent and his mother, the former Lettie Bailey was of Irish extraction and was born in Pennsylvania. When Levi was twenty four years old, in 1836, he came to Louisa Co. On 22 December 1841, he married Jane Dickinson, a native of Steuben Co., NY, b. 11 February 1815. Her parents were David and Anna (Gilbert) Dickinson. Mr. and Mrs. Stephen had six children: Carrie,m. John M. Creswell; Anna L. d. age seventeen; Josephine; John F.; Nannie J. and Jessie S. m. Chalres Blaul, a wholesale grocer in Burlington. Sterett Sterett, John (p. 25) John Sterett was the son of James and Isabella (Crawford) Sterett, the father, a native of Pennsylvania and the mother of Ohio. James Sterett came to Louisa Co. in 1853, settling at Morning Sun, where he lived until his death in 1884. His wife died in 1866. There were six children besides John in this family, they were: William; Robert,captured by the Confederates and consigned to Libby prison, where he died; David, who was killed in battle; and Nancy E. the only daughter. On the 15 April 1857, Mr. Sterett married Eliza Brown, daughter of Hamilon and Sarah (Ramsey) Brown, who were the parents of ten children. Mr. and Mrs. Sterett had two children: Edward, b. 1858, d. 1889; and William R. born September 1860. Stineman Stineman, E.S. (p. 289) E.S. Stineman was born in Louisa Co., on the 2 November 1881. His parents are J.P. and Josephine (Dickerson) Stineman. To this union was born seven children: Blanche, m. William Thompson; David; Della m. Freddie Boston, of Muscatine; Edward S., our subject; Abner, of Muscatine; Ninett; and one who died in infancy. On the 29 December 1905, Mr. Stineman was married to Pearl Longstreth, who was born in Nebraska on the 18 July1887, the daughter of John and Hattie (Willier) Longstreth, natives of Iowa in which state they were married, and soon thereafter moved to Nebraska. There were seven children in the Longstreth family: Jessie,m. Henry Tomfeld, of Michigan; Pearl (Mrs. Stineman); Julia; Margaret; Ida; Dollie; and Freddie. Mr. and Mrs. Stineman had two children: Fern b. 2 September 1907; and Oliver E. b. 26 July 1909. Storks Storks, W.D. (p. 14) William D. Storks was born in Ohio on 30 August 1835, the son of David and Eliza (Davis) Storks, both natives of Delaware. William had three sisters: Hester, Ann, and Susan. William Storks died 6 April 1911. On the 18 December 1862, Mr. Storks married Sarah P. Anderson, the daughter of Thomas and Ann (Prouse) Anderson. They were the parents of ten children: John, d. in the Civil War; George W., NM; Margaret, m. John Lett, of Council Bluffs; Eliza J., m. Enoch Hayden; William; Martha R., m. Rastus Wilson, of Kingston; Lloyd; Charles A., New Boston, IL; and one died in infancy. Mr. and Mrs. Storks had six children: Theodore M., Oakville; David W.; one died in infancy; Anna E., m. W.H. Miller, of Quenemo,KS; ELiza V. m. A.J.McCannon; and Cora LIly m. Lawrence Kurtz of Knoxville. Strawhacker Strawhacker, D. E. (p. 502) David E. Strawhacker was born in Pennsylvania on 4 February 1860, the son of Benjamin and Mary Ann (Miller) Strawhacker, who were both natives of the Keystone State. Benjamin Strawhacker was a blacksmith died 7 March 1893. There were seven children in the family: John Ambrose, New Boston, IL; Elizabeth, m. J.R. Minor; William Jefferson, ND; James P; David E., of this review; Henry E., ND; Rose E. m .Victor Swafford of Morning Sun. Mr. Strawhacker married twice 1) 30 December 1886 to Lily Smith, by whom he had two children: Edna May, m. R.R. Severly; and Eva Lena, m. Andrew Ellsworth. The mother pased away on the 22 March 1890. On 19 December 1894, he married Emerance Herr, daughter of Gregor and Augusta Herrr, both natives of Germany. They were the parents of five children: Joseph; George d. in infancy; Mrs. Strawhacker; Sophia, m. Frank Searls; and Anna m. Harry Munson. Mr. Strawhacker and his second wife had eight children: Emery G. and Emma, who died in infancy; Marshall, of Oakville; Frank H.; Cleo Irene; Mark C.; Paul D. and Roy B. Swan Swan, J.A. (p. 107) EDITOR'S NOTE: the next two men appear to be brothers who married sisters,but there are some discrepancies in the account of the Paisley (Peasley) family and the number of children in the two accounts.. J.A. Swan was born in Preble Co., OH on the 7 December 1837, son of James M. and Nancy A.(Rouse) Swan. The parents were both natives of Pennsylvania and came to Iowa in 1846. On 31 January 1867, Mr. married Anna E. Paisley, who was born in Muskingum Co. Ohio, in 1848, the daughter of S.M. and Sarah Ann (Savage) Paisley, also natives of Ohio. Her mother died near Athens, OH in 1855; and in 1862, her father married Sarah Skinner near Winfield, IA. He came to Iowa in 1859 and resided there for fifteen years before moving to Adair Co. and from there to Taylor Co.,IA. His second wife died in Lenox, IA and he was living with his daughter, Mrs. J.A. Swan, at the time of his death on 28 January 1911. Mr. Paisley had twelve children, six by each marriage. Swan, J.W. (p. 127) Joseph W. Swan was born in Morning Sun township on 17August 1850, the son of James McConnell (Mack) and Nancy A. (Rouse) Swan and a brother to J.A. (above). His father was born in Pennsylvania on 9 April 1815. Mrs.Swan, who was born 20 January 1819, died 14 November 1875. They had ten children, namely: Rachel, m. J.B.Linney, of Linn Co., KS; John A. ; Eliza Jane m. William Buffington; Ellen C. m. E.P. Green, of Taylor Co.; Martha, m. John C. Leeds, of Oklahoma; J.W., our subject; Wrilla, m. J. Delong, of Morning Sun; Laura Bell, m. George Horn, of Fairfield; Mary and Arabella, both whom died in infancy. On the 29 June 1871, Mr. Swan married Diana Peasley, daughter of S.N. and Sarah Ann (Savage) Peasley (Paisley in above account), who were natives of Athens Co., Ohio, in which state her mother died. In1858, her father came to Iowa. His death occurred in February 1911. To Mr. and Mrs. Peasley were born three children: Ann Eliza, m. John A. Swan; Diana (Mrs. Joseph W. Swan); and William of Arkansas. Mr. and Mrs. Swan had seven children: Iona, m. P. A. Yohe, of Morning Sun; Warren A., Pottawattamie Co.; Wallace, Oskaloosa; Leah, m. Charles Peterson, of Des Moines; Walter, Morning Sun; Guy; and Clinton. Swygard Swygard, C.F. (p. 543) Charles F. Swygard was born in Louisa Co., on 23 February 1868, the son of Frederick W. and Helena (Jugenheimer) Swygard, natives of Germany. The mother died 26 January 1911. They were the parents of seven children, as follows: William H.; John P.; Anna M. m. Henry Todd, of Wheatland, Okla.; Charles F.; James E., Colfax, WA; Mary M., m. Frank Nelson, of Mediapolis; and Deborah E., m. J.B. Loper, Oakville. On the 28 December 1892, Mr. Swygard married Carrie L. hummel,of Peoria, IL. Mrs. Swygard was the daughter of Thomas and Frederica (Berges) Hummel, who had ten children: Lewis; Thomas; Herman; Fred; Henry; Catherine, who married B. Swygard, of Burlington; Carrie, who married Charles Swygard; Ida, m. Otto Bender, of Peoria; Augusta, m. L.D. McAfee,also of Peoria; and John. Mr. and Mrs. Swygard had four children: Edith S., b. 24 October 1893; Frederick H., b. 21 August 1897; Dorothea L., b. 30 September 1900; adn Lawrence E., b. 30 August 1902. Syphrit Syphrit, J. R. (p. 165) Joseph Ray Syphrit was born in Louisa Co., 7 December 1856, a son of Joseph B. and Harriet F. (McNatton) Syphrit. The father was born in Westmoreland Co., PA and the mother in Pike Co., OH. They were married in Louisa Co. 5 April 1855. His wife died 8 March 1893. There were eight children in their family, namely: Jospeh Ray, of this review; Emma W., m. George Varner; Rhoda J., d. age two years and eight months; Nevada E., m. Charles H. Hendricks; Mary E. and William O., twins, b. 22 August 1866, the former m. Joseph Scull; Alfred M. and Henry E., d. age eighteen. Jacob Syphrit, our subject's paternal grandfather was born in Westmoreland Co., PA, 13 June 1804. He married 29 June 1829, to Elizabeth Bott, who was born 8 February 1802. He died 4 November 1857, and his wife died 27 October 1866. The four children were: Joseph B.; Catherine E.' Christopher J. and Jacob B. Of this family, Christopher was born in Westmoreland Co. 25 July 1834 and in April 1852 came to Iowa where he enlisted April 1861, in Co. J. Eleventh Iowa Volunteer Infantry. He died at his home in 1862 from exposure at the battle of Shiloh. The great grandfather Christian Syphrit was born in Westmoreland Co., PA, in 1777 and married Mary Shank, of German descent. He had the following children: Jacob; Elizabeth; Barbara; Mollie; Sarah; Nancy; and Joseph. Sebastian Syphrit, the great, great grandfather was born in Westmoreland Co., in 1750 On 10 September 1884, Joseph Ray Syphrit married Amy J. Fitzgerald, who was born at Musctine, 2 November 1859. Her parents Ezekiel and Eliza (Predmore) Fitzgerald, were both natives of Clermont. Her paternal grandfather, Grant Fitzgerald was a cabinetmaker at Batavia, OH, which he left in the summer of 1853, headed for Cincinnati, and was never heard from again. Mr. and Mrs. Ezekial Fitzgerald were married in Ohio and in 1857 came to Muscatine, and then moved to Fairview, and finally Louisa Co. The father was a cooper by trade. He died 15 August 1883. They had nine children, two of whom died in infancy; Fostickp; Laura B. m .Richard O. Chaney; Amy J. m. Joseph Ray Syphrit; Mary E., m.O.P. Dotson, Eldon; and William D. and Arabella, both of whom died at the age of two Mr. and Mrs. Syphrit, of this review, were the parents of five children: Roy O., b. 1 March 1886; Lee A. b. 1 April 1888; Joseph E.; Ora May , d. in infancy; and Glen C., b. 29 April 1895. Syphrit, W.O. (p. 274) William O. Syphrit was born 22 August 1866, the son of Joseph B. and Harriet (McNattan) Syphrit.(See his brother's account above for extensive family background.) In addition to the above, this account mentions a second marriage for the father after his wife's death in 1893. In 1898, he married Elizabeth Helverson. On the 25 February 1892, Mr. Syphrit married Ada M. Hamilton, who was born on 15 January 1869. She was the daughter of Alexander and Susanna Hamilton. Mr. and Mrs. Syphrit had two children: Elma H. and Charles H. Thomas Thomas, J.G. (p. 344) John G. Thomas was born in Louisa Co. on the 27 January 1878, the son of Dennis and Elizabeth (Griffith) Thomas, the father a native of Wales and the mother of Louisa Co. There were four children in the family: Mary E. m. J.H. Jones; John G.,of this review; David L. and Daniel. On 16 April 1908, Mr. Thomas married Anna Davis. By 1912 they had two children, one died in infancy and the other Elizabeth I. born 9 February 1910. Thompson Thompson, B.E. (p. 39) Balis E. Thompson, former superintendent of the county poor farm was born in Louisa County on 18 August 1862, the son of Henry and Sinah (Hurley) Thompson. They were natives of Ohio and Delaware, respectively. They were married in Louisa Co. Mr. Thompson died 4 March 1869 There were thirteen children in the family: WIlliam A. the eldest; Minerva, m. James Billings, a button manufacturer in Muscatine; Laura E. m. William H. Melrose of Colfax, Wash; Balis E., our subject; Frances; Henry W., Van Buren Co.; Martha A.; Maria B.; Mary A. m. J.F. Cornelius; John E.; Harry; and Altha, twin sister of Frances who died in infancy. Mrs. Cornelius left four children at her death: James; Roy E.; Lulu, m. Lorinza R. McKinney; and Howard. On the 5 July 1888, Mr. Thompson married Frances L. Presbury,daughter of John C. and Victoria (Mason) Presbury, natives of Ohio. There were nine Presbury children: Virginia G. and Charles, d. in infancy; Frances L.(above); William A. K.C., MO; Emma m. Harry Kitner, also of K.C.; Susan m. Joseph Halcroft; Cora m. Charles Martin; Maud m. Burton Redfern; and Katie m. Joseph Aukers. Mr. and Mrs. Thompson have five children: Lulu E. b. 14 April 1889 m. Homer Mannefee; Mary McKinley, b. 27 August 1894; Rodney K. b. 5 May 1897; John M. F. b. 4 December 1900 and Jean Audrey b. 16 December 1904. Thomson Thomson, J.C. (p. 52) John C. Thomson was born 15 November 1857, in Newport, Kentucky, the son of James Y. and Anna (Seed) Thomson, natives of Scotland and Ireland, respectively. The father was a civil engineer. There were five children in the family: John C.,of this review; Jennie, m. D.D. Marshall; Anna; William, d. in infancy; and Cora E. On the 25 Januayr 1886 , Mr. Thomson married Sarah Downey, daughter of Michael and Anna Downey, of Oakville. They had four children: Marshall D.; Mabel, d. in infancy; Charles T.; and Kenneth Bryan. Tindall Tindall, B. T. (p. 111) Benjamin F. Tindall was born in Louisa Co. on the 23 January 1853, the son of John and Sarah (Marshall) Tindall, natives of Ohio. Their children were: Benjamin T., of this review; Mary and Eliza; Nancy m. Laben Saunders of Poweshiek Co.; Robert; William, also of Poweshiek; and Sadie m. Lyman Ogier. Mr. Tindall married Sarah Marshall on 21 February 1877, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (Smith) Marshall, who wre the parents of eleven children as follows: Margareta; Ella, m. R. H. Marshall, Los Angeles; Sarah, m. Mr. Tindall; Myra m. T.A. Hamilton of Winfield; Ida m. C.A. Whitaker of Post Falls, Idaho; Joshua; Henry and Leander of Alaska; Frank; Clara m. Geoge Hungate of S.D.; and Laura m. William Arnold. Mr. and Mrs. Tindall had eight children: Laura and Leroy; Josie . Frank Owens of New London; Velma; Alice; Nellie and Fred. Tustison Tustison, Dwight (p. 261) Dwight Tustison was born 25 October 1866, the son of Frank and Martha Tustison, natives of Ohio. The father was a well known physician of Wapello. Dr. and Mrs. Tustison had three children: Dwight was the second child, Emma m. Robert Garrett of Seattle, WA; and Ora m. a Mr. Rood, also of Seattle. On the 5 June 1898, Mr. Tustison married Abbie Spitznogle, daughter of John and Sarah (Shaw) Spitznogle, who were the parents of five children, as follows: Ameda, m. Clark Sheafor; Carrie, m. Allan Graves; Abbie (above); George d. 1892; and John d. in infancy. Umphrey Umphrey, J.G. (p. 550) James Gabriel Umphrey was born in Louisa Co., on 30 September 1878, the son of Thomas J. and Mary B.(Copeland) Umphrey. On the 7 October 1907 he married Jessie Ruth Hupp, daughter of Ezra and Elizabeth (Doty) Hupp. There were three children in the Hupp family: Belle m. F. B. Tierley of Portland, OR.; Ethel m. George Nicholas adn Mrs. Umphrey Umphrey, T.J. (p. 537) Thomas J. Humphrey was born in Louisa Co., 30 December 1850, the son o James G. and Nancy F.(Bevans) Umphrey, natives of Kentucky and Ohio respectively. The father came to Louisa Co. in 1848 and died here in 1877. His wife died in 1895. They had ten children: Maryette, m. David Gregory, of Morning Sun; Francis; Elizabeth m. S. F. Small, of Wapello; one died in infancy; Jane; Thomas J., of this review; Cordelia; John; and Ida m. a Mr. Dye, of Grant City, MO. On the 15 August 1876, Mr.Umphrey married Mary B. Copeland, daughter of William and Harriet (Jarvis) Copeland. There were three children in the Copeland family, the other two: Atwood, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and Caroline A. Mr. and Mrs. Umphrey had seven children: James; Dayton; Eber; Hazel, married Henry Swope, of Wapello; Willa; Loie; and Geoffrey. Mrs. Umphrey died 11 February 1908. Utter Utter, Celestus (p. 362) Celestus Utter was born in Madison Co., New York on 22 December 1837, the son of Palmer and Julia (Mann) Utter. They came to Louisa Co. in 1856. Mr. Utter died in 1901, surviving his wife by twenty-two years. He had married a second time to Caroline Thorp, also a native of Madison Co. By his first marriage, he had eight children: Celestus, of this review; Adelbert, d. in prison during Civil War; Williston, wounded in Civil War, d. 1908; Harriet; Kendrick and three who died in infancy. Mrs. Caroline (Thorp) Utter, also died in 1908. Celestus Utter was twice married 1) 1862 to Mrs. Rebecca Cole, who was born in Michigan, the daughter of Robert Painter. They had five children, the eldest of whom died in infancy. The others are as follows: Alice m. O.C. Farmer; Harriet, m. M.A. Shellabarger; Robert; and Hervy A. Mrs. Utter died in 1900 and Mr. Utter married 2) 1909 to Mrs. Catherine (Wagner) Ritter, the widow of Louis B. Ritter. By her first marriage, she had three sons, John William, Haroe, and Walter. Mrs. Utter was the daughter of Deter and Lavina (Gipple) Wagner, born, reared, and married in Pennsylvania. They came west in 1877. Mr. Wagner died in 1883 and his wife two years previously. Van Horn Van Horn, Launy (p. 66) Launy Van Horn was born in Niagara Co., NY; on the 18 January 1849, the son of Launy and Lucina (Powers) Van Horn, natives of New York. They were married in Lockport, NY. There were five children in the family, the others were: Harmon; Adelbert; Ella m. C.T. Herrington; and Carrie married Calvin Burnett. Mr. Van Horn married Alice Coder, a native of Ross Co., Ohio, and daughter of James M.K. and Brunetta (Keen) Coder, both born in Ohio. was married in Ohio and brought his wife to Iowa. They had the following other children: John; Jane; Sarah m. John Idle; Newton G.; Thomas; Lemuel, and Charlie. Mr. and Mrs. Van Horn had two children: Frank Leslie and Lulu May m. B.F. Snyder. Vaugn Vaugn, I.N. (p.419) I.N. Vaugn was born in Woodbury Co., on the 7 July 1876, son of J.N. and Rebecca (Carl) Vaugn. The parents were both born in Louisa Co., but later moved to Woodbury Co. where they died. On the 27 January 1906, Mr. Vaugn married Iva Thompson, born near Mt. Pleasant, the daughter of A.B. and Molera Thompson. Her parents were both natives of Ohio. The Vaugns had one daughter born 5 November 1906.Mr. Vaugn was postmaster at Newport. Wheeler Wheeler, N.T. (p. 154) Norman T. Wheeler was born in Louisa Co. on 20 December 1874. His parents were Elisha and Catherine (Hunter) Wheeler, the mother a native of Maryland and the father of Pennsylvania. They migrated to Iowa in 1865 where the father died in 1883. The mother died 15 October 1897. They were the parents of eleven children. Mr. Wheeler married 9 March 1898 to Myrtle Hamilton, who was born in Des Moines Co., the daughter of Robert M. and Maria (Whittaker) Hamilton, the father a native of Ohio, and the mother of Illinois. They had ten children. Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler had three children: Marie E. b. 22 December 1898; Harold L. b. 28 October 1900; and Bernard N. b. 25 January 1903. Wheeler, R.H. (p. 475) R. H. Wheeler was born in Pennsylvania on 12 May 1858, the son of Elisha and Catherine (Hunter) Wheeler. Mr. Wheeler married Anna Porter, a native of Lousia Co., and the daughter of Hugh and Lydia (Maloney) Porter, natives of Ireland. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1833, locating first in New York. They came to Iowa around 1843. They had eight children. Mr. and Mrs. Wheeler had five children: Roscoe P., Nellie; Bertha; Mabel; and Helen. Whetstine Whetstine, W.E. (p.431) Wayne Erwin Whetstine was born19 February 1878, in Washington Co., Iowa. His parents were R. S. and Elizabeth (Bolding) Whetstine. The father was born in Indiana on 18 August 1838 and the mother was born in Illinois on 8 November 1841. Mr. Whetstine arrived in Washington Co. when he was sixteen. He served in Company I, Eighteenth Iowa Infantry during the Civil War. Mr. and Mrs Whetstine had seven children: Edward; Earl; Otis; Eunice; Alva; Wayne Erwin and Bertha. Mathias Whetstine, Sr., the great grandfather of our subject was born in the southern states. He emigrated to Iowa and settled in Washington Co. and lived to be 105. His son, Mathias, Jr. served in the Civil War in the same company as his son Enoch, a brother to R.S. He married Emelia Lee, whose father was a brother of Colonel Lee, a well known pioneer circus man. She died in Washington Co., KS at the age of 79 and her husband died at the age of 85. The grandfather on the maternal side was Wesley B. Bolding, whose parents emigrated from England. He was born at Big Springs, KY, 9 August 1819 adn married 24 December 1840 to Nancy Drake, who was born in Gilson Co., Indiana on 22 October 1822. She moved with her parents to Coles Co., Illinois in her infancy and died at Coppock, Iowa 16 December 1901 and was buried in the Wayland Cemetery. There were eleven children in the family of Mr. and Mrs. Bolding namely: Mrs. Elizabeth J. Whetstine, of Wellman, IA; William R., a physician at Burlington; John L. of Omaha, NB; Mrs. Permelia Perry, Galena, KS; James M., who died age 32; Daniel D.of Denver, CO; Charley W. died in infancy; Mrs Alice M. Stonebarger of St.Michael, NB; Erasmus M. of State of Washington ; Mrs. Clara E. Watts, of Phoenix, AZ; and Mrs. Sarah Eldora Kurtz of Washington, IA. Wayne Erwin Whetstine married 18 May 1911 to Lola F. Endsley, who was born in Kansas, a daughter of I.A. and Emma (Duncan) Endsley, both residents of Col. Jct. Mrs. Whetstine had one brother Willard Endsley. (ED. NOTE: Since the Louisa Co. History Book was published in 1912, we have no children listed for these newlyweds at that time) Whisler Whisler, R. G. (p. 288) Ray G. Whisler was born in Marshall Twp., Louisa Co., on 11 August 1876. He was the son of Francis and Mary Ann (Grismore) Whisler, natives of Ohio, who moved to Iowa soon after their maarriage. They arrived at Burlington, Des Moines Co. on 31 December 1862 and the following day came to Louisa Co. Mr. and Mrs. Whisler had three children: Agnes, m. J. Christman, of Philadelphia, PA; Arthur and Ray G. of Louisa Co. Mr. Whisler was married on 15 November 1900 to Mabel Fitzsimmons, a daughter of WIlliam and Eva (Morgan) Fitzsimons, whose other children were: Olive m. C.A. Blanchard; Earl; Mary m. Lloyd Patterson; Myrtle and Walter. Mr. and Mrs. Whisler had two children: Nina V. b. 14 February 1903; and one who died in infancy. Wiederrecht Wiederrecht, Louis (p. 327) Louis Wiederrecht was born in 1857 in Louisa Co. His parents were George and Salome (Sultbarger) Wiederrecht, natives of Germany, from which country they emigrated to the Uniteed States. Six children were born to them: George; Salome, m. Henry Wiederrecht; Louis: Elizabeth, who married George Kreimer; Fred; and Kate, m. Samuel Schafer. The father died in April 1904, and the mother in the fall of 1903. On the 20 April 1886, Mr. Wiederrecht married Katie Blauer, a native of Switzerland from which she emigrated when she was four years old. There were eleven children in the Bauer family. Mrs. Wiederrecht was the youngest. The others were: Mary m. Charles Pantel; Annie m. George Walters; Rosa m. Jacob Lieberknecht; Christ; Maggie m. John Dankert; Fred; John; Elizabeth; Ulrich; and Susie. Mr. and Mrs. Wiederrecht had four children: Vernon b. 16 March 1887; Lola b. 1889; Mabel, b.1891; and Inez, b. 1893. Wilcox Wilcox, O.P. (p.155) O.P. Wilcox was born in Blount Co., Tennessee on 16 April 1851; son of Samuel S. and Amanda Jane (Shaw) Wilcox. The parents were both born in Tennessee. The father died in May 1893 and the mother in November 1892. They were the parents of nine children. O.P. Wilcox arrived in Iowa when he was six months old. On Christmas Day of 1893, Mr. Wilcox was married to Lucinda R. Harmon, who was born in Louisa Co., Iowa 21 November 1854, the daughter of James and Mary A. (Duncan) Harmon. The parents were both born in Blount Co., Tennessee. They were the parents of nine children. Seven children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Wilcox, one of whom died in infancy; Emma A. m. C.V. Shipman, of Sully, Iowa; Robert H.; Francis O.; Orlando A.; Zola M. b. 29 December 1889 and d. 6 March 1911; and George M. Mr. Wilcox died 15 February 1910. Williams Williams, E. D. (p. 458) Edward D. Williams was born in Wales 12 July 1835, son of Morgan D. and Jane (Price) Williams. The father came to America with his family in 1843, and lived in Wisconsin for a number of years. In 1866, after the Civil War, he moved to Louisa Co. There were ten children in the family: Edward D., the youngest; Thomas, John, Richard; Margaret; Jane; Elizabeth; Price; Catherine and Mary. On 23 January 1868, Mr. Williams married, in Louisa Co. to Catherine Davis, a daughter of Evan H. and Elizabeth (Evans) Davis, both of whom were born in Wales. Mr. and Mrs. Davis were the parents of eight children: Hugh; Evan; John; Edward; Joseph; RObert; elizabeth, m. W.V. Davis; and Catherine m. E.D. Williams. Mr. and Mrs. Williams had five children: Elizabeth J.; Augusta; Morgan; Margaret m. John Humphrey; and Sarah Edna. Williams, W.B. (p. 420) W. B. Williams was born in Des Moines Co., Iowa on 9 September 1851, the son of J.Wilson and Julia A. (Robison) Williams,who were natives of Vermont and Ohio, respectively. His father was born in 1816 and was a county surveryor of Hancock, Ilinois and served in the House of Representatives in 1852, 1856, 1861, 1865, and 1874. In 1878, he was elected to the Senate. He died 29 August 1893. In 1847 he married Julia A. Robison, and she became the mother of six children: Herrick; Lelia, d. in infancy; W.B. of this review; another who died in infancy; Julia Eliza m. David Waddle, of Missouri; and Minnie M. On the 20 February 1873, Mr. Williams married Amelia Chandler, daughter of Andrew and Caroline (Fisher) Chandler. Her parents were natives of Germany, but were married in New York and came west in 1863. Mrs. Williams was one of five daughters, the others were: Hortense, m. Henry Allward; Bridget, m. William Coonrod; Elizabeth, m. Ezra Kurtzp and Annie M. m. S. D. Gates of Artesia, N.M. Unto Mr. and Mrs. Williams were born eleven children: John W.; Carrie E. m. Ben Luckenbill; George H.; Fannie A., m. Albert Hamilton, of Des Moines Co.; James Albert; Maud C., m,. Marion Bailey; Gladys, m.Marshall Thomson; Lyman C. ; Warren Seldon; Bessie L. and Norma E. Williams, W. J. (p. 445) William J. Williams was born in Wales in 1849, the son of WIlliam and Jane (Jones) Williams, who were also born in Wales. William J. was their only child. He married in December 1877 to Ann Williams, the daugher of Richard and Jane Williams, also natives of Wales. They were the parents of eleven children. Mr. and Mrs. Williams had six children: John R.; ROland; Elmira J.; Mary E. ; Hattie E., and David. Mrs. Williams died 9 November 1908 and is buried in the Cambrian Cemetery. Williamson Williamson, W.C. (p. 410) W. C. Williamson was born in Louisa Co. on 15 March 1845, the son o fJames S. and Nancy E. (Nevies) Williamson, natives of Ohio and New Jersey, respectively. His great-great-great grandfather Nevies was the first mayor of New York. The father, who was born in Greene Co. on the 29 August 1817, came to Iowa in 1836,where he died in 1855. The mother who was born 1 October 1823, d. 26 July 1896. W.C. Williamson was the eldest son and had a brother James S., who lived in Kansas. On the 5 January 1869, Mr. Williamson was married to Wilhelmina Berkhoff, who was born in Prussia, Germany, on 26 July 1844 and was brought to this country when he was four years old. They had seven children, as follows: Julie, m.C.A. Eversmeyer; A.J.; Minnie M., m. Ed Eversmeyer; Emma, m. H.B. Jones; and three deceased before 1912. The mother died on 30 May 1903. Mr. Williamson m. 2) on 30 May 1905, to Katherine Schafer, who was a native of New York, and in 1864 came ot Iowa with her parents. She was one of fourteen children, whose father died in 1896. Willson Willson, J.R. (p.141) James R. Wilson was born in Alleghany Co., Pa. on 23 July 1823, the son of John Z. and Nancy (McConnell) Willson, both natives of Keystone state, where the mother died. The father moved to Iowa in 1852. He was born 31 January 1784 and died 7 February 1871. There were ten children in the family. Mr. Willson married 16 February 1853 to Myrilla Reid, who was born in Greene Co., Ohio. Her parents James and Elizabeth (Robinson) Reid, were also natives of Ohio. Mr.and Mrs Willson ahd thirteen children, some of them were Mary E.; Anna J. m.. C. B. Wilson; A.M.; Mattie A. m. Charles Wiekertsheimer, of Idaho; and Lois S. m. M.C. Honeyman of Emerson, Iowa. Mrs. Willson died 27 October 1909. Wilson Wilson, C. B. (p.87) Charles B. Wilson was born in Morning Sun Twp., Louisa Co., Iowa on 19 February 1861, the youngest child of James and Martha E. (Miller) Wilson. The father was born in New York City on 24 July 1815,but the following year his parents moved to Washington Co., Pa where they resided until 1825. On the 1 of June 1843, James Wilson married Martha E. Miller, a native of Pennsylvania. They had four sons and four daughters: John W.; Mary E. m. George M. Simpson, a resident of Kansas, who died 15 February 1910; Margaret J., widow of another John W. Wilson; Cynthia E., a missionary in India; George B.: William G.; Rosana T., also a missionary teacher in India;and Charles R. James Wilson died 18 December 1891 and his wife died 26 March 1896 and is buried in the Brown Cemetery. Charles B. Wilson married on the 22 December 1885, to Anna J. Willson, who was born in Des Moines Co., on the 7 August 1861, a daughter of James R. and Myrilla (Reed) Willson. Her father was a native of Pennsylvania who came to Louisa Co. in 1850 and her parents were married here at the home of her uncle David Robinson on 10 February 1853. Her mother was born in Ohio and died at Morning Sun on 26 October 1909. Mr. and Mrs. Charles B. Wilson had the following children: Ella M. b. 20 February 1894 and died five days later; E. Raymond b. 20 September 1896; G. Russell, b. 22 February 1898; James Ralph b. 7 May 1903; and Ethel Myrilla, 9 August 1906. Wilson, F. V. (p.265) F. V. Wilson was born was born in Pennsylvania, 22 November 1850, son of WIlliam I. and Hannah (Clark) Wilson, who were the parents of ten children: Deborah, m. Alexander McClure, of Pennsylvania; Elizabeth, m. W. Reader; Hannah C., m. Samuel Colter; of Indiana; Harriet; F.V.; Sarah, m. Charles McCullough; Ishamar; W. B. and J.P., twins. Mr. Wilson married Mary J. Henderson after coming to Louisa Co. and had four children: Elizabeth B., m. E. Long, of Minnesota; Maud, m. E. Carrick, of Des Moines Co.; Lucia Zel, m. M. McElhaney, also of Des Moines Co.; and Sadie F. The mother died in OCtober 1902. Wilson, J. E. (p. 163) John E. Wilson was born in Northfield, Des Moines, Iowa on the 22 November 1856, and is the eldest child of John and Nancy (Elliott) Wilson, natives of Allegheny Co.,Pennsylvania. They were the parents of five children: Rachel N., the second child, m. J.A. Reed; Samuel O., Pittsburg, PA; Margaret, m. J.O. Gloss,of Homesead, PA. The third child died in infancy. On 2 February 1887, Mr. Wilson married Nancy Ann Edgar, who was born on 1 November 1866. She was the daughter of David and Martha (McElhinney) Edgar, to whom were born the following other children: James L., Glenwood, Minn.; Samuel E.; William J.; Thomas; Robert M.; and Elizabeth m. E. W. Hensleigh. After the death of his first wife, Mr. Wilson married 2) Julia Wells and they had five more children: George G., Seattle, WA; Melville; Emma L. and Eleln E., twins, the former m. Samuell Hartzell, of PA. and the latter m. Alfred Killpatrick, of Des Moines Co.; and Charles F. m. Agnes Hartzell, and lived in Pa. Wilson, J. H. (p. 121) J. H. Wilson was born in Preble Co., Ohio on 1 January 1831, the son of John and Isabella (McClure) Wilson, both natives of South Carolina. They moved to Ohio and lived there until 1839 when they came to Iowa. On the 3 March 1869, Mr. Wilson married Adeline McClurkin, a native of Lousa Co and a daughter of Thomas and Julia Ann(Kline) McClurkin, natives of Indiana. They came to Iowa during its early years and the father died here in 1889. Mr. and Wilson had two children, both of whom died in infancy. Wilson, S. F. (p. 84) Samuel F. Wilson was born 2 September 1868 on the homestead of his grandfather, John Wilson, who had procured it from the government in 1839. S.F. was the son of William M. and Miriam (Conway) Wilson, natives of Illinois and England, respectively. There were twelve children in the William M. Wilson family, the others were: Winona, m. Z.J. Owens, of Henry Co., IA; Clarissa; Isaac, d. in infancy; Renwick G.; James H. and Mary E. On the 4 March 1897, Samuel F. Wilson married Margaret Almina Elliott, the seventh child of Richard and Nancy Ann (Woodside) Elliott. Margaret was born 12 February1873 in Louisa Co. Her paternal grandfather, John Elliott, was born in Belfast, Ireland, in 1787 and emigrated to the United States as a young man, settling in Preble Co., OH, where he subsequently married Elizabeth Stevenson and had fourteen children. Some of those children were: WIlliam; Mary Jane, Coulterville, IL; Margaret m. a Robinson; David; Renrick; and Richard b. 4 November 1834, Fairhaven Preble Co., OH. Mrs. Elliott died 5 March 1855 and Richard died 9 October 1863. On the 9 December 1858, Richard Elliott married Nancy Ann Woodside, b. 4 June 1841, the third child of John J. and Mary Ann (Burns) Woodside. Her father was born in Ky. John J. Woodside married Mary Ann Burns, who was born in the District of Columbia,and was of Scotch extraction, descended from the same branch of the family as Robert Burns, the poet. Nancy Ann. Mr. and Mrs. Elliott had nine children: WIlliam Joseph, b. 1;7 April1860; John Calvin, b. 9 August 1862; Annie May, m. William R. McElhinney, of Morning Sun; Edith Arnetta, b. 18 June 1866; Robert Burns, b. 29 March 1868; David Coulter, b. 5 March 1870; Margaret Almina m. Mr. Wilson; Ella Elizabeth b. 25 October 1873, m. 25 April 1894 to Charles T. Reynolds, was a grocer in Fairfield; and Delbert Harvey, b. 15 October 1878, pastor. Mr. and Mrs. Samuel F. Wilson had one child: Harold Elliott, b. 5 January 1898. Wilson, T.D. (p. 478) Thomas D. Wilson was born in Preble Co., Ohio on the 10 January 1836, the son of Daniel and Catherine (Rock) Wilson. The father was a veteran of the War of 1812, while his grandfather, Rock, was in the Revolution. Daniel Wilson passed away in 1845 and three years later, the wife and famly moved to Louisa Co., Ia. On the 12 November 1857, Mr. Wilson was united in marriage to Susanna M. Raushenberger, who was born in Ohio, on the 1 July 1839. She was the daughter of John and Mary (Messer) Raushenberger, the father a native of Pennsylvania and the mother of Virginia. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson had five children: James Franklin; Edna; Mary Catherine, m. W.D. Nelson; William H. and Riley M. (Mrs. Nelson left the following children at her death: Bessie May; James Lale; and Mame Etta, m. WIlliam P.Hunt.) Mrs. Wilson died 13 October 1905 and is buried in the Elmwood Cemetery, at Morning Sun. Mr. Wilson ws still living in 1912. Wilson, William (p. 406) William Wilson was born in Ireland on the 4th of May 1849, the son of John and Maria (Courtney) Wilson, also natives of Ireland, born in County Armagh. They emigrated to the U.S. in 1874, first locating in Louisa Co where they farmed until 1886 when they retired and moved to Muscatine. Mrs. Wilson died 15 November 1901, and Mr. Wilson d. 7 October 1907. Four children were in the family, the others were: Robert; John C.; and Elizabeth, m. John C. Neil, a farmer in Kansas. On the 2 March 1875, Mr. Wilson married Anna McLean, the daughter of John W. and Fannie (Preston) McLean, natives of Catlettsburg, Ky. The father was killed in the Civil War. Three children were born to the McLeans: Nora, m. John Boyd, Mrs. Wilson and one whose name is unknown. Mr. and Mrs. Wilson had two daughters: Elizabeth m. W. E. McDaniel, of Minneapolis, MN; and May. Wilson, William M. (p. 16) William M. Wilson was born in Washington Co.,Iowa (ED. Note discrepancy of birthplace in his son, Samuel's account above) on the 20 May 1838 and was the son of John and Isabella (McClure) Wilson, the father, a native of Ireland and the mother of South Carolina. The family migrated to Louisa Co. in 1839. Here, the mother passed away on the 31 May 1866, and the father on 27 December 1877. Mr. WIlson married Miriam Conway, a native of England, b. 6 July 1843, the daughter of Samuel and Margaret Conway, who started for the United Staes in 1850, but the mother died on board the vessel and was buried in the Gulf of Mexico. The family located in Des Moines Co., Ia. There were six children in the family. Mr. and Mrs. Williams had the following children: Winona, the wife of G.W. WIlson; William G.; Samuel F.; Leah R. m. T.D. Wilson; Nellie, b. 18 september 1873, d. 13 December 1893; John; Sarah E., m. B.C. Owens of Henry Co.; Clarissa; R.G.; James H.; and Mary E. Woodruff, B. F. (p. 453) B. F. Woodruff was born 14 October 1858, the son of David and Mary Ann (Turner) Woodruff, both natives of Ohio. The mother died 8 January 1900. There were ten children in the family. The others were: Charles A.; Jennie; Emma; Jemima; Alice, m. Leon Daily; Nellie m. William Dunham of Fredonia, KS; Chalmers; Effie; and Josie. On the 19 October 1882, Mr. Woodruff married Maud Turner, daughter of William and Margaret (Ewing) Turner, natives of Ohio and Indiana, respectively. The father died 1 April 1908. They had twelve children: one who died in infancy; Maud, now Mrs. Woodruff; Willianna, m. Perry Kerns; Emeline, m. WIlliam Dawes; Charles; Maggie, m. John Adye; Cora; Hugh; Hattie, m. Fred Baldridge, of SD; Clifford; Dlellan; and Alma. Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff had five children: Stella, m. James Bennett; Arthur; Nellie; Ralph; and Mary b. 10 June 1891. Woodruff, C. A. (p. 514) C. A. Woodruff was born 25 December 1856, also a son of David and Mary A. (Turner) Woodruff, both natives of Ohio. They came to Iowa in 1851. In 1880, Mr. Woodruff m. Mary Ogier, a native of Ohio, the daughter of Isaiah and Emeline (Nixon) Ogier, both natives of Ohio. Her parents settled in Louisa Co., Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Woodruff had nine children: Anna, m. L.L. Ballentine, of Lincoln, NB; Mable, d. age 18; Alice, m. A.A. Ballentine; Grace, m. John Hanpt (?Hanft); Everett; Claire; Myra; Almond; and Max R. Wright Wright, Frank (p. 148) Frank Wright was born 13 September 1867 and died 17August 1903. He was the son of John and Rebecca Wright, who had eight children. Mr. Wright became a dentist and maried Emma Hook, daughter of G.W. and Emily B. (Trask) Hook, the father a native of Virginia and the mother of Illinois. The father died 13 November 1895 and the mother on 31 January 1910. They had nine children. Two children were born to Dr. Wright and Mrs. Wright: Raymond H., b. 14 October 1895; and Robert E. b. 4 September 1900. Mrs. Wright was a teacher nine years before her marriage. Yotter Yotter, J. W. (p. 99) J. W. Yotter was born in the state of New York, on 12 January 1855. His parents were Christ and Catherine (Byers) Yotter. The father was a native of Germany, and emigrated to the United States at the age of seventeen years, landing in New York where he was later married. In 1858, he and his wife moved to Lee County, Iowa and there the mother passed away in 1860. Two children were born to Mr. Yotter a son and a daughter. The latter married Christ Elenberger, a resident of Lee County. J. W. Yotter, of this review, married on 29 April 1880 to Margaret F. Bowers, the daguhter of Veit and Dora (Miller) Bowers, natives of Germany. Mr. and Mrs. Yotter were the parents of four children: WIlliam H.: Edward L.; Sadie A.; and Lenna M.
