A special thanks to Darlene Jacoby and Diane Johnson for typing these biographies. * ANDERSON, MELVIN was born March 16, 1908, in Lyon township, and Oneva Madland, born August 30, 1912, in Centennial township, were married January 23, 1934. The couple has four children-Shirley (Mrs. Russell Gaffney), Brandon, South Dakota; Tamlin-married to Patrick Westra, Auburn, Washington; Deanna (Mrs. Donald Serck), Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Marlys (Mrs. Homer Hastings:), New Castle, Wyo. After their marriage Melvin and Oneva farmed for 30 years in the Larchwood vicinity. They have been house parents at the Children's Home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and still reside on their farm southwest of Larchwood. They are members of Our Savior's Lutheran church. Melvin and Oneva have nine grandchildren. ANGLUM, WILLIAM DAVID was born on September 10, 1853, at Coxsackie, New York. His family moved to Iowa in 1854. He was married to Catherine Lorena Paulus on June 11, 1885. She was born on December 12, 1863. In 1893 they moved from Sac County to Lyon county with their two sons, Floyd and Fred. Dave was on the first board of directors of the Farm Bureau when it was organized in the county. The Anglums were charter members of the Ben Clare Methodist church. Dave passed away November 19, 1919. Floyd was married to Ethel Smith. He died on August 8, 1934, leaving his wife and three young daughters-Berniece, Luella, and Joyce. Fred died December 15, 1935. He had painted the picture of "Christ in Gethsemane" for the Community church in Larchwood in October, 1935. Catherine died April 4, 1941. ASHTON, WILFRED F. (Dodd) was born August 14, 1897. He married Inez A. Grimm on August 2, 1917. She was born January 4, 1899. To this union three children were born-W. Royce (deceased); Shirley (Mrs. Marvin Larson), Madison, Wisconsin; and J. Leslie, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Dodd was a rural mail carrier at Larchwood for 47 years and retired October 1, 1965. Inez was a clerk in the Williams General store for several years. They now spend their winters at Harlingen, Texas. ASHTON, WILLIAM F. (Frank) Sr. was born at Darwin, England, on July 24, 1863. He came to America in 1883 and settled in Florida. Frank married Sarah Victoria Hall, daughter of Captain John Hall, who was a former Confederate Cavalry officer. Victoria was born February 23, 1869. They were the parents of five children-William Leslie and Dorothy (both deceased); Lilias (Mrs. S. Albert Gates), Clinton, Iowa; Wilfred F. Jr.-married to Inez Grimm, Larchwood; and Florence (Mrs. Harry Yonkers), Houston, Texas. Early in their married life, Frank and Victoria planted an orange grove near Kissimee, Florida, still known as Ashton Grove. Victoria passed away September 10, 1900. On August 29, 1905, Frank married Nellie L. McGinnis, who was born June 30, 1868. They became the parents of three children-Mildred (deceased); Kathleen (Mrs. Leonard Carter), Norfolk, Virginia; and Donald-who married Leona Winter, Larchwood. Frank owned a blacksmith shop until 1937. The Ashtons then moved to California where Frank passed away November 11, 1942. Nellie died at Los Angeles, California, on February 14, 1945. ASPINWALL, GLENN was born in Pearl City, Illinois. He married Mildred Johnson of Lime Springs, Iowa. One daughter, Joanne (Mrs. Dennis Albers), lives with her family at Nashua, Iowa. Glenn was superintendent in Larchwood from 1927-32, and Mildred taught seventh and eighth grade. The Aspinwalls moved to Hawkeye, Iowa, where they operated a hardware and furniture business. He was selected from 23,000 members to serve as president of the National Retail Hardware Association. In 1962-63 Glenn was listed in "Who's Who in America." He passed away July 1, 1970. Mildred still resides in Hawkeye. BAHR, JACOB WILHELM was born October 20, 1862, at Luderbach Hessan, Germany. He came to the United States in 1880, working first as a carpenter in Illinois and then moving to Benton county, Iowa., where he was a well driller. On March 7, 1888, at Garrison, Iowa., Jacob married Gesina Brandt, who was born in July of 1861. They had two daughters-Anna (Mrs. Albert Hecht), deceased, and Carrie (Mrs. William Hecht), Larchwood. The Bahrs came to Larchwood in 1892 and settled on a farm northeast of Larchwood. Jacob passed away June 15, 1926, and Gesina on January 7, 1933. BENNETT, THOMAS G. Bennett, Thomas G. was born at Hull, IA., on October 4, 1877. His wife, Amelia Moeller, was born at Davenport, IA., on November 15, 1876. They were married March 10, 1901, on the family farm near Larchwood. They became the parents of seven children - Inez (Mrs. Clyde Hansen), Yucaipa, CA.; Virgil - married to Alice Jacobson, Valley Springs, SD; Dale-married to Miriam DeGrott, Riverside CA; Earl- married to Jeanne Price, McAlester, OK; Bernice, Sylvia, and Morton - who married June Hawks, all of Sioux Falls, SD. The Bennetts were farmers and were in the cattle-raising business. Their farm was located near Granite, IA. They were members of the Grandview Covenant church. Thomas passed away on February 14, 1943, in Sioux Falls, SD. Amelia is 95 years old and lived with her daughters in Sioux Falls. (photo of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Giles Bennett) BJORK, EMIL, son of Herbert and Ella Bjork, was born August 3, 1924. On October 13, 1946, he married Lorraine Edmundson, who was born July 30, 1919. They have two sons-Arnie and Roger, both of Larchwood. Emil has been with the Security Savings Bank for 25 years and is currently serving as vice-president. BJORK, HERBERT Bjork, Herbert was born September 1, 1888, and his wife, Ella Munson, on March 21, 1883, both in Sweden. They were married October 5, 1912, and became the parents of four children - Ruth (Mrs. Ed Hansen), Emil - married to Lorraine Edmundson, and Virgil - who married Burnice Hendrickson, all of Larchwood; and Raymond - married to Eunice Scott, Valley Springs, SD. Herbert came to the United States in 1910 and Ella in 1911. They started farming in 1913 and farmed in the Larchwood area until 1946, when they retired. They moved to Valley Springs, SD where they still reside. BJORK, VIRGIL Bjork, Virgil born June 30, 1915, was married on November 27, 1941, to Burnice Hendrickson, who was born February 6, 1920. They are the parents of four children Carol (Mrs. Warren Johnson), Hermitage, TN, Cheryl and Barbara, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Keith at home. The Bjorks have lived on the home place since their marriage. They have one grandchild. BLAINE, WILLIAM was born on November 8, 1871, in Wisconsin, and moved to Lyon County, Iowa., in 1888. He batched for a while with Jake Riegel and Ed McKelvey. Bill then married Ethel Johnson in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on February 16, 1898. Ethel was born September 18 1876. Bill and Ethel were parents of Laura Forslund, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, (her daughter, Kay Parks, now Mrs. Elwyn Kriger, and son Scott Fredrick, live at Minneapolis) and Jean (Mrs. Herman Schreurs) of Larchwood. They farmed for a time and then moved to an acreage near Larchwood. The Blaines were active in the Methodist church, and Bill was a charter member of the Masonic Lodge. Bill passed away April 16, 1923, and Ethel on November 27, 1969. BONANDER, AXEL R. SR. was born in Sweden on September 20, 1882. He came to the United States in 1900 and lived in Illinois until 1905, when he moved to Rowena, SD. On May 12, 1906, at Sioux Falls, SD. Axel married Olga Hildring, who was born on May 15, 1886, in Norway. She came to the United States with her mother in 1889 to join her father, Edward Hildring, who had arrived earlier. Axel and Olga became the parents of seven children- Oscar, Edgar, Harold - married to Vernice Wightman, Russell - married to Doris Young, and Axel Jr. - who married Donna Mae Hocke, all of Larchwood; Evelyn (Mrs. E.J. Poirier), Orofino, Idaho; and Mildred (Mrs. W. L. Hammitt), Sioux Falls, SD. Axel and Olga farmed in the Rowena, SD area until 1907 when they moved to Sioux Township . In 1913 they moved to their present farm six miles northwest of Larchwood. They have been residents of Sioux township for 64 years. Axel has served for 45 consecutive years as a member of the Board of Directors of the Granite Savings Bank, which is now the Security Savings bank of Larchwood. The Bonanders are charter members of the Grandview Covenant church. They have seven grandchildren and six great- grandchildren. Axel and Olga still live on their farm, together with their sons Oscar and Edgar. BONADER, HAROLD, son of Olga and Axel Bonander, was born April 9, 1914; and Vernice Wightman, daughter of Ida and Irving Wightman, was born October 9, 1918. They were both born and raised in the Larchwood area. Harold and Vernice were married March 11, 1941, at the Community Church in Larchwood. To this marriage two children were born, Jessie, Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Rodney, Vermillion, S.D. Harold served in the army air corps during World War II. He has been associated with the Security Savings Bank for 38 years and was elected president in January, 1960. BONTJE, EDWARD was born in Holland on June 8, 1901, and came to the United States in 1921. On February 9, 1926, at Tyler, Minn., Edward married Johanna Bakker, who was born May 1, 1899. The couple has seven children-Elizabeth (Mrs. Robert Gacke) and John (Jack)-married to Shirley Galles, both of Larchwood; Louis, married to Ellen Cook, Lester, Iowa; Donald-who married Jean Mundt, Janesville, Wisconsin; Janet (Mrs. Gary Mlujeak), Traverse City, Michigan.; Mary Anne (Mrs. Kermit Bjerke), Bemidji, Minnesota; and Shirley (Mrs. Vern Voorman), Park Rapids, Minnesota The Bontjes farmed in the Larchwood and Lester, Iowa., vicinity until 1961, when they moved into Larchwood and later to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Edward was a custodian at St. Lambert's church and school until his retirement. BONTJE, GERRIT, born November 23, 1893, was married in Holland on September 30, 1921, to Franceine Goosens, who was born July 16, 1894. This marriage was blessed with six children-Wilma (Mrs. Louis Zacher), Bowman, North Dakota; Anthony, married to Charlotte Murphy, Edward, married to Theresa Vlaming, Antoinette and Gary, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.; and Franceine (Mrs. Bob Hemauer), White Hall, Wisconsin. The Gerrit Bontjes came to Larchwood in November of 1952. They farmed east of Larchwood with his brother, Bill, for 11 years and then retired to Sioux Falls, South Dakota, in 1963. BONTJE, JACOB was born June 16, 1889. Having been sponsored by the Henry Bruggemans, Jacob came from Holland to the Henry Bruggeman farm in March of 1911. He then farmed with his brother, Bill, for many years. Jacob passed away on March 5, 1950. BONTJE, JOHN A. and Wilhelmina Grooteman were married on September 6, 1887, in Holland. John was born January 27, 1856, and Wilhelmina on January 25, 1866. They became the parents of 10 children; Jacob, Margaret, Simon, Adrian, and John (all deceased); Gerrit, married to Franceine Goosens, Edward, married to Johanna Bakker, and William, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Anthony (Tony), who married Wilma Blokker, Artesia, California; and Antoinette (Mrs. Bert VanRuiten), Lodi, California. John passed away on June 8, 1914. In October of 1921, Wilhelmina and four of her children came to live with Jacob on the farm east of Larchwood. Wilhelmina passed away on May 1, 1935. BONTJE, WILLIAM, son of John and Wilhelmina Bontje, was born on June 27, 1905, in Holland, and came to Larchwood in 1921. Bill farmed east of Larchwood with his brother, Jacob. He moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1963. BRATCHER, ROY was born in Peoria, Illinois, on January 3, 1881. He married Mary Verschoor, who was born in the Netherlands in 1882. Their family consisted of three girls and one boy, Lillian (Neil), Nora Springs, Iowa; Eleanor (Gottlob), Larchwood; Margaret (Pease), Seattle, Washington; and Robert of Petersberg, Virginia. They moved to Larchwood in 1925 and then to Seattle, Washington, in 1943. Both Mary and Roy passed away in Seattle, he in October of 1948 and she on December 11, 1956. BREUER, LAMBERT was born June 5, 1886, at Cassville, Wisconsin, and came to Larchwood in 1892. He married Magdalena Kircher at Cherokee, Iowa. She was born in 1864 at LaCrosse, Wisconsin. To this union five children were born; Tillie (Mrs. Frank Schreurs), deceased; William-married to Carrie McCarty, Marie (Mrs. Ed Richarz), and Agnes (Mrs. Joe Nicolai), all of Larchwood; and Everett-who married Hilda Carlson, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Breuers settled on a farm near Larchwood, where they lived for 22 years. Lambert helped build Larchwood's first Catholic Church, of which he and his wife were life-long members. Lambert was a charter member of the Men's Catholic Order of Foresters. Magdalena's brothers, John and Jake Kircher, were early settlers and had the first lumber yard and carpenter trade here. A great tragedy happened on the Breuer farm in May of 1912. Two Lester men, Charlie Bull and Charlie Finck, lost their lives in a gas-filled well. The Breuers retired in 1937 and moved to Larchwood. Magdalena passed away May 5, 1947, and Lambert on March 13, 1950. BREUER, WILLIAM was born in Cherokee County May 20, 1891, and came with his parents to Lyon County in 1892. He was married to Carrie McCarty on May 5, 1914 at St. Mary's Church in Larchwood. She was born October 20, 1892. Six children blessed their home, Sister Mildred (deceased); Ella Marie (Mrs. Wayne Doss), Salem, South Dakota.; Robert, married to Gloria Lynch and Eileen (Mrs. William Kerkvliet), both of Larchwood; Donald, who married Joan Doyle, Aberdeen, South Dakota; and Betty Lou (Mrs. Irvin Schreurs), Baltic, South Dakota. Bill was a charter member of the Men's Catholid Order of Foresters. The Breuers' farming career ended when they retired and moved into Larchwood in 1958. BRUGGEMAN, ANTHONY was born November 16, 1868, in Germany, and Winifred Nichols was born July 22, 1870, in Porter, Wisconsin. The couple was married November 28, 1893. There were 12 children born to this union, Josephine, Frances, and Joseph (all deceased); Minnie (Mrs. Edward Conway), Bettendorf, Iowa., William, who married Aleta Strong, Richland, Washington.; Elizabeth, Gertrude, Genevieve, and Charles-married to Fern Stafford, all of Seattle, Washington; Henrietta (Mrs. Nathaniel Hanson), Redmond, Oregon; Mary (Mrs. Austin O'Leary), San Diego, California; and George-who married Fern McQuade, Torrance, California. Anthony came to America and settled in Chicago shortly after the big Chicago fire of 1871. After a few years he decided to go west to Remsen, Iowa., where he broke prairie for $8 a month, and later came to Larchwood and farmed southwest of town. In 1917 the Bruggemans moved to Marshall, Minn., and later homesteaded in Lyman County on the Lower Brule Reservation in South Dakota. Winifred passed away April 29, 1920, and Anthony on September 21, 1949. BRUGGEMAN, AUGUST was born April 4, 18 , Larchwood. His wife, Catherine Snyder, was born April 30, 1903, at Breda, Ia. They were married January 15, 1924, at Larchwood, and became the parents of seven children; Patricia (Mrs. Russell Wright), Rowena, South Dakota; Cleona (Mrs. James Kellar), Rapid City, South Dakota; Leonard-married to Orphadel Schubert, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Norbert, who married Theresa Snyders, Garretson, South Dakota; Jerry, married to Sharon McCarty, Valley Springs, South Dakota; Maureen (Mrs. John McCarthy), Mt. Clemens, Michigan; and Donald, who married Rosemary Ripperda, Larchwood. The August Bruggemans still live nine miles west of Larchwood, where they have farmed for 48 years. August and Catherine have 34 grandchildren. BRUGGEMAN, HENRY Bruggeman, Henry-was born May 5, 1862, at Balve, Germany. The family came to the United States in 1872 and settled in Chicago. Ill.; where Henry attended school until the age of 17. He continued his father's occupation of scientific gardening in the Chicago area. In 1891 he came to Centennial Township, where he was a farmer and stock raiser. Henry and Nellie Clercx were married in St. Mary's Church, at Larchwood, on January 22, 1895. The couple was blessed with 12 children-John, Ellie, Henry, Jr., (Hap), and Paul (all deceased); Agnes (Sister M. Esther R.S.M.) and Leona (Sister M. Leonard), both of Long Island, N.Y.; Helen (Mrs. Neil Kelly), Mary (Mrs. Roy Viereck), Ray-a World War II veteran, August-who married Catherine Snyder, and Esther (Mrs. Robert Tracy), all of Larchwood; and Loreine (Mrs. Lester Phelan), Flandreau, S.D. The Bruggeman now lives on the 560-acre home place. The large maple and ash grove planted in the early years has more than doubled in size by self-planting volunteers. BRUGGEMAN, JOHN, born December 12, 1898, and Irene McGuire, born May 4, 1900, were married on January 24, 1922. They had two sons: Clement, married to Delores Reznich, Omaha, Nebraska, and Cletus, married to Rose Tobin, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Irene passed away in November of 1927. John married Vera Quinlivan on June 22, 1936. She was born January 29, 1903. In their family are Mary (Mrs. Ronald Plucker) and Dennis, married to Sharon Lemke, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Thomas, who married Tamela Reistroffer, Glendora, California. John passed away December 2, 1964. Vera resides in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and is currently teaching at St. Mary's school in Larchwood. BRUGGEMAN, PAUL, born October 1, 1918, at Sioux Falls, S.D., was married June 1, 1944, at Larchwood, to Eileen Krier, who was born October 30, 1923, at Emery, S.D. They became the parents of six children-Linda (Mrs. Chuck Andersen), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Bonnie (Mrs. Emory Rodgers), Rosemary (Mrs. Jerry Reinke), Larry, Jim, and Julie, all of Larchwood; and Kenneth of Sheldon, Ia. The Bruggemans make their home southwest of Larchwood. Paul passed away October 8, 1967. BRUGGEMAN, ROBERT J. was born November 14, 1920, at Larchwood, to William and Catherine Bruggeman. On June 27, 1950, he married Beatrice Gacke, of Alvord, at the Sacred Heart Church. Beatrice was born February 25, 1927. Robert and Beatrice have four children-Gwendolyn, Minneapolis, Minn.; Mark, Craig and Colleen, all at home. The Bruggemans are the third generation on the farm on which they reside. BRUGGEMAN, WILLIAM was born on February 28, 1892, to Herman and Amelia Bruggeman. He spent his early childhood near Des Moines, Ia., and later moved to Templeton, Ia., before coming to Larchwood. He served in World War I William married Catherine Roemen on February 10, 1920. Catherine is the daughter of Hubert and Helena Roemen, of Larchwood, and was born October 4, 1900. Seven children were born to this union: Robert-married to Beatrice Gacke, Maurice, and William J., all of Larchwood; Vincent-married to Betty Krier, and Audrey (Mrs. Earl Schwenck), both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Roger-who married Jannette Gau, Denver, Colo.; and Helen (Mrs. Daryl Miller) of LeMars, Ia. Robert, Vincent, and Maurice all were in the service of their country. Catherine and William settled on a farm in Centennial Township southwest of Larchwood. In 1962 they built a new home and retired in Larchwood. BURKARD, RAY was born at Trent, S.D., on June 16,1927, and Anna Scholten on May 31, 1930, at Alvord, Ia. They were married at St. Mary's Church, in Larchwood, on February 10, 1953. Ray and Ann are the parents of five children-Virginia, Richard, Helen, Mark and William, all at home. They farmed in the Dell Rapids area until moving to a farm southeast of Larchwood in 1962. Ray is a navy veteran of World War II and was in the army in the Korean conflict. BURNS, AARON CALVIN Burns, Aaron Calvin - was born on August 11, 1854, in Pondelas county, Wisc., and married Emma Engold of Graetinger, IA. One daughter, Pearle (deceased) was born to this marriage. Emma passed away in 1889. On June 20, 1892, at Orange City, IA., Aaron married Clara Ollye Brown of LeMars, IA. She was born Oct. 14, 1868. They were the parents of - Ollye (Harvey), Roy (circuit judge) - married to Lorene Byrnes, and Clarence - who married Dorothy Skillman, all of Sioux Falls, SD.; Melvin - married to Arlie Pruitt, Rock Rapids, IA; and Florence (Mrs. Harold Engelmann), Carlsbad, CA. In 1882 the Burns homesteaded on a tree claim near Howard, SD, and then moved to Sioux Center, IA, before coming to Larchwood in 1897. Aaron established a livery and dray line business until 1915 and then farmed near Larchwood. For 25 years he served on the town council and was constable of Larchwood. Clara passed away on Jan 14, 1927, and Aaron on May 27, 1942. CAIN, JAMES P. was born February 1, 1893, at Silver City, Ia., and Mina Murphy was born January 5, 1891. They were married at LeMarsh, Ia., November 26, 1919. Born to this union were: Thomas-who married Margaret Corkery, Burlington, Ia.; Father John, Madrid, Ia.; Steve-married to Rita Snyders, Larchwood; Father James, Tucson, Ariz.; Gladys (Mrs. A. Daniels), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Sister Thecla O.S.F., Dubuque, Ia.; Sylvester-married to Patricia McCarthy, Oxon Hill, Md.; and Veronica (Mrs. Duane Hotover), Paradise, Calif. They were farmers, moving to the Larchwood area in 1941. James passed away on November 8, 1957, and Mina lives in Sioux Falls, S.D. CAIN, STEPHEN P., born April 12, 1924, at LeMars, Ia., and Rita Snyders, born October 15, 1927, were married November 11, 1946, at St. Mary's Church, in Larchwood. They are the parents of-Donna (Mrs. Rick Breuer), San Jose, Calif.; Maria (deceased); Leon, Maureen, Stephen, Patricia, Mary Anne, Suzanne, Joseph, and Michael, all of Larchwood. The Cains have been engaged in farming in various communities and returned to Larchwood in 1963 to farm north of town in Sioux Township. CASE, WESTWOOD D. was born January 20, 1850, at Money Creek, Minn., and Eliza Jane Pulver on April 27, 1865, at Elliota, Minn. They were married May 1, 1882, at Lanesboro, Minn. Six children were born to this union-Westwood and Zella (both deceased), Maud (Mrs. Robert McCollum), Gertrude (Mrs. Gerhard Johnson), Marie (Mrs. Ralph Crawford), and Myrtle (Mrs. Chares M. Tierney). In 1886 the Case family moved from Rock Rapids, Ia., to Larchwood, where Westwood was a clerk in Atkinson's store. Later they bought and operated a drug store, and he was postmaster. Eliza and Westwood were early members of the Congregational Church, possibly founders. The family moved to Harmony, Minn., in 1897. Eliza died January 23, 1940, and Westwood on September 6, 1952. CAULEY, JOHN C. was born June 26, 1872, at Marengo, Ia., of Irish decent. Emma Solon, born March 10, 1877, at Rock Valley, Ia., married John on December 31, 1903. The couple had seven children-John L. (deceased); F. Lucile, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mary Lois (Byrne), Sacramento, Calif.; Virginia (Wiese), Burbank, Calif.; Francis-married to Josephine Barclay, Long Beach, Calif.; Madelyn (Armstrong), Dublin, Calif.; and Adelyn (Huotari), Encino, Calif. Emma taught school near Larchwood for many years. She was a member of the Women's Club, which was instrumental in getting a marker for the state line, known as the "iron post." John arrived here in 1900 and purchased the Petheran Hardware store. He passed away September 5, 1947, at Hollywood, Calif., and Emma on November 11, 1950. CHEESMAN, CYRUS P. married Alleghany Willard in May of 1874 at Winona, Minn. Allie was born February 28, 1852. They had two daughters-Angie (Mrs. John W. Parkinson) and Lottie (Mrs. Jake Rummel), both deceased. Allie later married A.L. Bothwell and lived in the Willard house. She died February 4, 1920, and he has also passed away. CLERCX, JOHN was born February 28, 1910; and his wife, Mary Kramer, was born July 19, 1914, both at Larchwood. They were married June 5, 1934, and are the parents of two children-Duaine, who married Jeanette Butts, Pierre, S.D., and Peggy (Mrs. Virgil Reemts), Worthington, Minn. The Clercx family farmed west of Larchwood for six years and then purchased a farm east of Lester, Ia., where they still reside. Mary and John have four grandchildren. CLERCX, LEO and his wife, Sophia Schreurs, were both born in the Netherlands. Leo was born November 18, 1870, and Sophia on September 18, 1870. They were married June 1, 1897. This union was blessed with three daughters and five sons,-Sophia (Mrs. Les Reinke), Ann (Mrs. Clarence Ripperda), Agnes (Mrs. Ambrose Reilly), Peter L.-married to Mildred Perkinson, and Francis-who married Ruth Lewis, all of Larchwood; Henry-married to Adelaide Bernards, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Peter H. (deceased); and William-who married Nellie Olson, Rock Rapids, Ia. The Clercxes were farmers west of Larchwood for many years. Leo and Sophia had 17 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren. He passed away December 4, 1955, and she on April 23, 1962. CLERCX, PETER, SR. was born September 6, 1832, in Beegdon, Holland. As a young man during the French Revolution and the reign of Napoleon, Peter fled from France to Holland. The name was changed from LeClerqxz, pronounced LaClair, to Clercx. In 1864 Peter married Agnes Freehen, who was also born in Beegdon on January 19, 1842. They were the parents of four children,--Mary, Nellie, Leo, and Peter W. (all deceased). The Clercx family came to America as very early settlers. They lived for a time in Wisconsin, then moved to Alvord, Ia., and came to Larchwood in 1894. They purchased one-half section of land west of town. Agnes and Peter lived with their daughter, Nellie (Mrs. Henry Bruggeman), from 1907 until their deaths. Agnes passed away January 7, 1917; Peter died at the age of 93 years on December 2, 1925. CLERCX, PETER W. was born in Galena, Ill., on April 17, 1880. He married Margaret Snyders on January 5, 1904, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, in Larchwood. She was born December 30, 1883, at Carroll County, Ia. Seven children were born to this union, Frank (deceased); Ann (Mrs. Henry Simons), Mary Agnes (Mrs. Leo Kramer); Al-married to Frances Jensen, and Gregory, all of Larchwood; John-who married Mary Kramer, Rock Rapids, Ia.; and Joe-married Leola Rabey, Jasper, Minn. They lived on a farm west of Larchwood all their married life. Margaret passed away August 12, 1957; and Peter passed away December 30, 1971, at 91 years of age. CRANNELL, A.A. was born October 31, 1868, at Tekamah, Nebr., and his wife, Belle Quinlan, was born in Rock Valley, Ia., in 1878. They had one son, George Edward, who married Irene Duffy of Charles City, Ia. There are eight grandchildren, who are all now living in San Jose, Calif. The Crannells lived in Larchwood for a number of years. He passed away January 16, 1926, and she on December 2, 1928. Their son died February 16, 1970. CRELLY, PATRICK and his wife, Mary, were some of the earliest residents in Lyon County, Ia. Patrick was born at Luzerne, Ia., on February 23, 1867; his wife, Mary Kelly, was born December 24, 1868, at Van Horne, Ia. They had five daughters-Irene, (Munns), Ruth (McKenna), Madge (Hoben), Bernice (Murphy), and Lucille (Conway6). The Crellys came to Larchwood in 1899, shipping their personal property here by train from Benton County. They purchased a quarter section of land, having willow trees on the north and east sides of the farm, which had been planted by the Englishmen. Mary and Patrick were members of the St. Mary's Parish. Patrick passed away in 1931 and Mary in 1934. DANIELS, JAKE was born in Swallmon, Holland, on August 1, 1877. Elizabeth Van Cruchten was born in Holland, March 12, 1883. They were married February 24, 1908, in Holland, and came to the United States the same month. To this union nine children were born, Gertrude Mrs. Irenaeus Ripperda), deceased; Elizabeth (Mrs. Steven Sehr), Joseph, married to Irene Snyders, and Anthony, who married Gladys Cain, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Mary (Mrs. Carl Polzin) and Clara (Mrs. Laurence Snyder), both of Larchwood; Minnie (Mrs. Jake Snyder), Graceville, Minn., Anna (Mrs. Frank Sehr), Inwood, Iowa; and Rose (Mrs. Anthony Gacke), Hudson, South Dakota. The Daniels settled in Larchwood, where he worked as a farm hand and later farmed. Jake directed the choir at St. Mary's Church for many years. Elizabeth passed away April 29, 1934, and Jake on May 15, 1947. DE BAERE, ARCHIE was born in Holland on November 22, 1887, came to Alvord, Iowa., and married Lucy De Smet on January 19, 1916. Lucy was born December 9, 1897. Four children were born to this union-Richard, married to Jean Reinke, LeMars, Iowa; Helen (Schmidt-Mrs. Jack Stevens), Imperial , California; Marcella (Mrs. John Zimmer), Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Frances (Mrs. Ellis Skiles), of Larchwood, where he was employed at the Schonfelder Harness and Shoe shop. In 1918 they started farming south of Rock Rapids and remained there until his death on December 15, 1922. After her husband's death Lucy came back to Larchwood and farmed with her brother, Al, for three years on their father, Dominic De Smet's farm. On February 1, 1926, Lucy married Jacob Wiering, at St. Mary's Church. They had one son, James, who married Joan O'Hara. The Wierings farmed in the Larchwood vicinity for about 35 years, purchasing a farm northwest of Larchwood in 1941. They retired in 1958 to their new home in Larchwood. Jacob passed away April 8, 1963. James now farms the home place. DE SMET, ALFONSO and Margaret Schettler were married at Larchwood on February 9, 1926. Margaret was born on January 2, 1906, at Wilmont, Minnesota, and Al at Rock Valley, Iowa, on September 13, 1900. They are the parents of three children, Geraldine (Mrs. John Rabusch), Glen Ellyn, Illinois; and the twins, Bernard, who married Fern Ahlers, and Leonard, married to Mary Ann Kloiber, both of Larchwood. Since their marriage, Al and Margaret have farmed in the Larchwood vicinity. They have 10 grandchildren. DE SMET, TED was born February 14, 1906, at Rock Valley, Iowa. He married Emma Schettler January 15, 1929, at Larchwood. Emma was born November 16, 1909, at Wilmont, Minnesota. To this union were born seven children, Jane (Mrs. Harold Heirigs), Freeman, South Dakota; Donald and Veronica (Mrs. Robert Weins), both of Denver, Colorado; Alvin, married to Darlene Schulte, Cletus, married to Beverly Hoefert, and Gene, all of Larchwood; and Dean, who married Barbara Petersen, Omaha, Nebraska. Ted and Emma farmed in the Larchwood area from 1929- 40, at which time they moved to Valley Springs, South Dakota, where Ted operated a feed grinder. In 1943 they returned to Larchwood, with Ted continuing with the feed grinder business until 1953, after which he worked as school custodian and a painter. Ted and Emma have 33 grandchildren. DE VAUL, LEVI was born near North Manlius, New York, on December 14, 1853, and was married to Adella May Townsend on January 19, 1881. She was born near Mycena, New York, on July 22, 1860. TheDe Vaul family was French and the Townsend family was English. To this union was born five children; Walter, Claude, and Seraph (all deceased); Raymond, married to Ruby Lawson, Dallas, Texas; and Dewey, who married Mary Scott, Larchwood. Levi and Adella moved to Lyon County, Iowa, from Madison County, New York, in 1908. They lived in Centennial Township and on the Parkinson ranch in Sioux Township. They then lived on South Dakota farms but returned to Centennial Township in 1920, where Levi died July 29, 1923. Adella died August 17, 1925. DOHERTY, LEO was born July 8, 1886, at Clinton, Iowa, and Margaret Janssen, born January 20, 1884, at LeMars, Iowa, were married September 20, 1910, at Anthon, Iowa. They were blessed with nine children,-Leonard (deceased); Father John, Breda, Iowa; Mary (Mrs. Ray Baker;), Bakersfield, California; James, who married Marlene McCarty Ripperda, and Josephine (Mrs. Alfred Viereck), both of Larchwood; Veronica (Mrs. Marion Kalhar) and Margaret Ann (Mrs. Menno Hofer), both of Huron, South Dakota; Cletus, married to Agnes Reines, Sioux Falls, South Dakota; and Frances (Mrs. Cleo Krier), Pierre, South Dakota. In 1910 the Dohertys came to Larchwood, where Leo had a barbershop for 35 years. Taking over his father's shop, Leonard continued to serve, the fifth consecutive generation of one family. Leo passed away November 5, 1945, and Margaret still lives in Larchwood. DRUET, DR. A. L. was born July 28, 1877. On January 16, 1901, he married Alice Tuttle, who was born March 17, 1871. They were the parents of two children, Audrey of Larchwood, and Kenneth, married to Marguerite Clark, Reeds Spring, Missouri. The Druets moved to Larchwood in 1913. Except for the time he served in the army, Dr. Druet practiced medicine in Larchwood until his death. There have been three generations of doctors in the Druet family; Dr. A.L. Druet, Dr. K. Kenneth Druet, and his son. Dr. Druet passed away May 29, 1931, and his wife on April 21, 1954. EGEBO, ISAK was born November 21, 1907, in Mondal, Norway, and came to America in November of 1927. A prominent farmer and stockman, he came to the Larchwood- Klondike area and is still living in Centennial Township. He was married to Signe Johnson at Toronto, South Dakota, on May 13, 1933. She was born July 14, 1908. The Egebos have four daughters and one son, Lorna, (Mrs. Don Horn), Larchwood; Sylvia (Mrs. Virgil Stettnichs), Cleghorn, Iowa; Lillian (Mrs. Denjnis Pearson), Salem, South Dakota; Hazel (Mrs. Martin O'Connor) Normal, Illinois; and Warren, a student at the University of South Dakota at Vermillion, South Dakota. Isak and Signe are active members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church south of Klondike. ENGELMAN, HENRY was born in 1869 and came to Larchwood from Ireton, Iowa, in the winter of 1915-16 with the Rudolph Rentschler family. They traveled in a midwinter snowstorm, driving a team of horses hitched to a wagon loaded with possessions. Henry owned the meat market in Larchwood, where his homemade bologna was a delight to his customers. There were two Engelman sons, George and William. William has been teaching at a high school in Nogales, Arizona for the past 28 years and will retire this year to live in San Jose, California. George served in the navy for 26 ½ years and in the Asiatic Fleet in World War II. He and his wife had two sons, Richard and Ed. George was killed at the age of 49 in an automobile accident in 1954. His wife had preceded him in death; therefore, William, who had never married, raised George's two sons. When Richard was 18, he enlisted in the marines. He was seriously injured in Vietnam and after being released from the hospital, he returned to the battlefront, where he was killed. Henry continued in the meat market business in Larchwood until his death in 1933. On his tombstone is inscribed, "He loved children and was kind to animals." FAGAN, GEORGE W. was born on September 18, 1864, at Ripley, Ill. He married Hulda Rudloff, of Larchwood, on June 16, 1909, at her home. Hulda was born in September of 1887. The couple had one son, Gilbert, who is married and lives at Glen Ellyn, Illinois. George worked in the Larchwood bank for several years. Hulda passed away in 1970, George now lives in Camdenton, Missouri. FEAY, EDMUND (ED) was born July 12, 1872, at McGregor, Iowa. At the age of 15 he moved to Larchwood, where he lived most of the rest of his life. He was united in marriage with Ella Brown in 1893, and to this union one son was born, Jesse, of California. Ella passed away soon after the birth of her son. In 1900 Edmund married Hilma E. Lundquist at Rock Rapids, Iowa. Hilma was born October 3, 1879, at Lindsborg, Kansas. Ed and Hilma had 11 children, Arthur and Hilma Mae (both deceased); Herbert, Washington, D.C.; Dallas, Rockville Centre, NewYork; Walter, Belton, Texas; Ilean (Mrs. Henry Lokay), Chicago, Illinois; Maurice, Columbus, Ohio; Everett, Fresno, California; Raymond, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Donald, New York City, New York; and Carrell, Orinda California. During the 30-year period from 1921 through 1951, except for a short time during World War II, one or more of the Feay's was enrolled at the State University of Iowa. Ed and Hilma farmed near Larchwood for a short time and then moved to town, where Ed operated a dray line, worked in an implement shop, and managed a grain elevator. He also operated the municipal electric plant and was town constable. Ed passed away July 26, 1936, and Hilma on April 27, 1949. FEAY, HENRY SAMUEL Feay, Henry Samuel was born July 27, 1830 at Point Marion, Pennsylvania, and moved to McGregor, Iowa and then to Larchwood around 1885. They were the parents of eight children, Samuel, Margaret, Oliver, Elizabeth, Katherine, Mary, Henry Edmund, and John. Henry was a carpenter. He passed away in 1914 at the home of his son, Oliver, near Granite, Iowa. FEAY, OLIVER JESSE was born July 5, 1861, at McGregor, Iowa. On December 12, 1896, he married Lena Nelson, who was born May 25, 1872, near Canton, South Dakota. They became the parents of six children-Evelyn (deceased); John Henry, married to Edith Archer, Carrie (Mrs. Edward Tweedt), George, married to Violet Kroeger, and Alexander, who married Joy Dodd, all of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Oliver and Lena farmed between Larchwood and Klondike. Oliver passed away April 12, 1932, and Lena on January 20, 1950. FEAY, SAMUEL ALEXANDER was born in January of 1852, in Pennsylvania, and married Sarah Gray on February 13, 1879. They were the parents of two sons, Virgil and George (both deceased). The family farmed in Centennial Township. In 1892 Samuel was elected county auditor and after his term of office the Feays remained in Rock Rapids, Iowa., and operated a hardware store. After Samuel's death in 1908, Sarah returned to spend her remaining days in Larchwood. FLESSNER, HENRY C. and Harmke and their oldest children, Tillie, Anna, and Owen (all deceased) were all born in Ostfrieslau, Germany. They migrated to America in 1881 and settled in Ackley, Iowa. Their other three children, Minnie, Henry and Jake (all deceased) were born in Wellsburg, Iowa. They came to Steen, Minnesota, in 1889 and then farmed near Ben Clare, South Dakota, from 1900 till 1909, when they moved to Larchwood. Their son, Henry, was the first Larchwood war casualty in World War I, losing his life in the "Big Bertha" confrontation. The Larchwood American Legion Post is named in his honor. Henry died in September, 1931 and Harmke in September, 1934. GALLAGHER, ROY was born July 29, 1921, at Sioux Falls, S.D., and Margaret Rose Olson, born Aaugust 27, 1921, were married on April 21, 1944. They are the parents of Thomas, Omaha, Nebr.; Jeffrey-married to Trudy Jerome, Washington, D.C.; and twin daughters-Joli of Tempe, Ariz., and Jeri, of Iowa City, Ia. In 1941 Roy entered the U.S. Marine Corps and served in the Pacific Theater and in China. The Gallaghers came to Larchwood from Cedar Rapids, Ia., in 1953. Roy was in partnership with the Olson Lumber Company of Sioux Falls, S.D.; he now owns the Larchwood Lumber Company. He is a charter member and was the president of the Optimist Club. He was also lieutenant governor and governor of the Iowa district of the Optimists. Roy is presently the mayor of Larchwood. GANNON, JOHN came to Larchwood in 1897. He married Julie Watters of Petersville, Ia., in 1904. They had five children-Cletus, Liguori, Mary, Charles, and Sarazella. John and his brother operated the Ford garage in Larchwood at one time. They moved to Dell Rapids about 1910. Julie died in 1914 and John passed away September 9, 1958. GERNER, RAYMOND G. was born September 12, 1886, at Alta, Ia. He married Hazel Murphy June 24, 1914, in Elrod, S.D. She was born April 6, 1893, in Wayne, Nebr. Their children are-Wayne of San Antonio, Tex., and Joyce (Mrs. James Wood), Mission, Tex. The Gerners moved to Larchwood in 1918 to become associated with his father in the general mercantile business. When their store was destroyed by fire in 1930, they moved to Mission, Tex. Ray died December 18, 1949. GERNER, WILLIAM, born in 1858, married Mary Hall on April 30, 1883. Both were born in Pennsylvania. They were the parents of three children-Harry, Raymond and Florence (Mrs. August Hoeck), all deceased. After their marriage the Gerners moved from Pennsylvania to Alta, Ia., and then to Larchwood in 1918, where they operated a general store until it was destroyed by fire in 1930. William died April 2, 1929, and Mary in November of 1942. GETMAN, NATHAN ERNEST was born December 23, 1875, and on June 2, 1897, at Ida Grove, Ia., married Eliza Teghtmeyer, who was born February 8, 1874. The couple had five children-Wayne (deceased); Lola (Mrs. Ralph McNerney), and Kenneth-who married Lucille Oeser, both of Luverne, Minn.; Dr. Floyd-who married Mary Sheeley, Coralville, Ia.; and Dr. G.H.-married to Clara Mains, Wayne, Pa. Nathan operated the drug store in Larchwood from 1894 till 1919, at which time he moved to Rock Rapids, Ia. He wrote many stories on the history of Larchwood and Lyon County. Nathan passed away January 7, 1957, and Eliza on January 24, 1971. GOETTSCH, HERMAN was born January 10, 1905, at Larchwood. On August 28, 1937, at Rock Rapids, Ia., Herman married Alice Hagemann, who was born September 28, 1915, at Grant County, Minn. They have one son, Dean-who married Peggy Ann Schoen, Freeborn, Minn. Herman and Alice have farmed in the Larchwood vicinity since their marriage and now reside on their farm north of town. They are members of the English Lutheran Church at Larchwood. GOETTSCH, J.H. was born at Lubeck, Germany, September 1, 1853. He married Caroline Bender August 27, 1891, at Remsen, Ia. She was born January 20, 1870, in Germany. To this union nine children were born-Emma, Margaret, Dora, Henry, and a baby boy (all deceased); Carl, Tenino, Wash.; William-who married Sophia Siedel, Ramona, S.D.; Bertha (Mrs. George Hess), Wheaton, Minn.; and Herman- married to Alice Hagemann, Larchwood. Joe came from Germany in 1873 and settled in Benton County, Ia. He purchased a farm in Sioux Township in 1890, and the land that he broke was low prairie. He erected a few buildings and moved his family there in the spring of 1892. Joe and Caroline were charter members of the Lutheran Church, donating much time and labor to erecting the church. Joe passed away at their farm home March 22, 1939, and Caroline on May 25, 1943. GOTTLOB, HENRY was born in Illinois in 1869. Egypt Hodge was also born in Illinois, in 1866. They were married December 26, 1906, at Alton, Ill. After their marriage they moved to Larchwood. Two sons were born to this union. Henry, Jr. was killed by lightning at the age of 10 years. Herbert married Eleanor Bratcher and resides in Larchwood. Henry passed away in 1925, and Egypt in 1946. GRATTON, JAMES H. JR. was born November 28, 1880. He married Katie Brown, daughter of William and Louisa Brown, on March 7, 1907, at Larchwood. Katie was born April 6, 1887. They became the parents of three children-Frances and James W., (both deceased); and Ruth (Mrs. T.M. Clymer), Des Moines, Ia. The Grattons farmed in the Larchwood area, with the exception of eight years when they lived in town. James was employed by the Farmers' Elevator. Katie was the local editor of the "Larchwood Leader," under the supervision of the owner, Mr. King. In 1930 James and Katie purchased the Bradley farm on the state line northwest of Larchwood. In 1960 they retired and moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., where they celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary. James passed away on April 24, 1960, and Katie still lives in Sioux Falls. GRATTON, JAMES, SR. and his wife, Mary Jane Gayden, migrated from England to America in May of 1881 and settled on a farm near Dunlap, Ill. They were the parents of James, John, Elmer, Mary, Hattie, William, and Thomas (all deceased). Mary Jane passed away after Elmer was born, and two years later James married her sister, Susan Gayden. In the spring of 1896 they moved to the Larchwood vicinity, settling on a farm southeast of town. In a few years they purchased land near by, where they lived until retiring in Larchwood in 1912. James passed away in 1927 and Susan in 1929. GRIMM, JOHN A. was born April 4, 1873, in North English, Ia. He married Mary E. Kinderfather, January 1, 1895, at Garrison, Ia. She was born July 28, 1872, at Garrison. They had two daughters-Gladys (Zangger-Powers), Long Beach, Calif.; and Inez (Mrs. Wilfred (Dodd;) -Ashton), Larchwood; and two orphan children- Edward Konanz (deceased) and Benjamin Barnhizer-who married Clella Russell, Mechanicsville, Ia. The Grimms moved from Larchwood in 1917. They owned meat markets in Hills, Minn., and Little Rock, Ia., before settling in Rock Rapids, Ia., where they first owned a service station and tourist camp and then the East-Side Grocery, which they operated until they retired. John passed away November 25, 1940, and Mary in 1948. GROTEWOLD, ANDREW and Pearl Lohman were married on January 11, 1941, at Rock Rapids, Ia. Andy was born January 23, 1914, at Ashton, Ia.; and Pearl was born April 19, 1921, at Rock Rapids. They are the parents of three children-Sharon (Mrs. Alan Tuntland), Rochester, Minn.; Bonnie (Mrs. Terryl Pettengill), San Francisco, Calif.; Paulette (Mrs. Daniel Kasperski), Chicago, Ill.; and Alan of Larchwood. Andy and Pearl farm southwest of Larchwood. They have one grandchild. GROTEWOLD, C. FRED was born in Larchwood on May 21, 1890. On June 23, 1910, he married Clara Wallace, who was also from Larchwood, and was born March 15, 1892. The children born to this couple included Ellen (Mrs. G.E. Larson), Omaha, Nebr.; Floyd, married to Maxine Stoefen, Larchwood; Earl, married to Phylis Larson, Indianola, Iowa; and Melvin, who married Faye Schaefer, Lester, Iowa. They also raised two grandchildren, Richard and Jean, and one niece, Kay. Fred ran a dray line, clerked for Haggert's Store, farmed, and then for 25 years worked for Standard Oil. He served as mayor of Larchwood for several years. After his retirement he enjoyed gardening and the raising of strawberries. Fred died on August 7, 1968. Clara is now residing at Tuff's Memorial Home at Hills, Minnesota. GROTEWOLD, FLOYD (BUD) was born in Larchwood November 18,1914. He worked for his father, Fred, who was the Standard Oil agent. Bud married Maxine Stoefen, from Alvord, Ia., on June 25, 1936. She was born February 5, 1917. The couple are the parents of five children-Barbara (Mrs. Harold Roemen), Donna (Mrs. Ray Tieszen), and Nancy (Mrs. Leonard Roemen), all of Larchwood; Bill, married Shirley Williams, Fling, Mich.; and Doug, who married Carol Jensen, Las Vegas, Nev. In 1949 at the time of his father's retirement, he became a Standard Oil agent. Bud has served on the City Council for several years. GROTEWOLD, FRANK Grotewold, Frank, son of Henry and Salome Grotewold, was born on Dec 29, 1877, at Claremont, Iowa. On Feb. 16, 1904, at Larchwood, he married Grace McEnaney, who was born on April 14, 1883, the daughter of Dr. James and May McEnaney. To this marriage were born seven children, Raymond (dec); Gladys (Mrs. Dale Fett), Ames, Iowa; Florence Leona (Mrs. Vernon Lewis), Rock Rapids, Iowa; William LeRoy, married to Pearl McMonagle, Andy, married to Pearl Lohman, and the twins, Harry and Harvey, who married Alma Rorem and Vera Heyer, respectively, all of Larchwood, Frank came to Larchwood in 1881. After their marriage Frank and Grace farmed at Ashton, Iowa. and west of Larchwood before moving into Larchwood in their later years. Frank passed away on Nov. 22, 1963, and Grace on Nov. 15, 1968. GROTEWOLD, HARRY was born November 15, 1909, at Larchwood. His wife, Alma Rorem, was born October 30, 1913, at Inwood, Iowa. They were married on December 16, 1930, and became the parents of three children, Betty (Mrs. Marvin Kramer) and Gary, married to Marilyn Hestand, both of Larchwood; and Robert, who married Evelyn Moser, Steen, Minn. Harry and Alma farmed at Inwood and then in South Dakota before moving to a farm west of Larchwood. They have eight grandchildren. GROTEWOLD, HARVEY was born November 15, 1909. On June 14, 1930, he married Vera Heyer, who was born September 2, 1911. They have five children, Beverly Ann (Mrs. Delbert Rippentrop), Valley Springs, South Dakota; Lyle, married to Joan Ripperda, and Gerald, married to Melva Huemoeller, both of Larchwood; June (Mrs. Robert Severson), West Liberty, Iowa.; and Connie (Snitselaar;), Marion,Iowa. Harvey and Vera farmed east of Larchwood until they retired in 1972 and built a new home in Larchwood. They have 20 grandchildren. GROTEWOLD, LE ROY, son of Frank and Grace Grotewold, married Pearl McMonagle, daughter of Charles and Johanne McMonagle, on June 1, 1934. LeRoy was born November 18, 1904, and Pearl on July 7, 1913. They are the parents of six children, Leota (Coles-Mrs. Joe Redenius, Jr.), Valley Springs, South Dakota; Royce, married to Gayle Rupert, Pueblo, Colo.; Irene (Mrs. Robert Kueter), Humboldt, S.D.; Lorna (Mrs. Joel Stevens), Leonard, and Colleen, all of Larchwood. The Grotewolds farm northwest of Larchwood. LeRoy and Pearl have nine grandchildren. GROTEWOLD, HENRY was born at Bremen, Germany, on April 14, 1837. He settled at Freeport, IL in 1851, and then moved to West Union, IA, where on March 31, 1860 he married Salome Barthelme, who was born in Goxweiler, Alsace, Germany, on Jan 19, 1840. Salome was 14 years old when she came to America. During the voyage her mother, brother, and sister died aboard the ship and were buried at sea. Being the oldest daughter, Salome helped raise the rest of the family. Henry and Salome were the parents of 14 children - Louis, Sophia, Gesina, William, George, Christian, Louise, Henry, Charles, Frank, Jessie, Ernest (Pete), Nellie and Mary (all deceased). The Grotewolds came to Lyon county in 1881, farming east of Lester for one year and then moving northwest of Larchwood until their retirement when they moved into town. Salome passed away on May 7, 1914, and Henry on June 27, 1919. GROTEWOLD, LAURENCE R. was born December 23, 1907, and Laura Schoenfelder, born September 8, 1908, were married on June 10, 1939, at South Sioux City, Nebraska. They have four children, John, who married Cathy Shipley, and Mary Ann (Mrs. Joseph Blauwet), both of Larchwood; Donald, married to Vera Carnahan, Renton, Washington; and Jane, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The Grotewolds are retired on their farm west of Larchwood. GROTEWOLD, WILLIAM, the son of Henry and Salome Grotewold, was born Feb. 23, 1865, in Fayette county, Iowa. On Jan 14, , William married Mary Tobiason, who was born April 4, 1878. They were the parents of 10 children, Herman, Harry (all dec); Salome (Mrs. Ralph Anderson), Rock Rapids, Iowa; Walter, who married Phyllis Hull, Frankfort, Illinois (Mrs. Ben Holmes), Apple Valley, California; Louise (Mrs. Melvin Clark), Sioux City, Iowa; Lawrence, married to Laura , Larchwood, Bernice (Mrs. Robert Paulson), Downey, California; and Muriel (Mrs. Lawrence Duchane), Sloan, Iowa. William came to the west end of Lyon County in 1881 and in 1888 broke the prairie land, which he farmed for over 45 years. Mary passed away Augusst 12, 1931, and William on August 6, 1954 GROTH, JOHN was born March 17, 1890. He married tillie Wenzel of Alvord, Iowa., on February 19, 1913. Tillie was born May 11, 1893. They had three children, who were all deceased at an early age. John and Tillie farmed east of Larchwood for many years and then moved to a new home in Larchwood in 1966. Tillie passed away September 10, 1966, and John on October 19, 1969. GULK, GEORGE was born at Durant, IA, on February 11, 1870, and was united in marriage to Minnie Winkelman on March 1894. She was born December 6, 1869, in Germany. Four children were born to this union - Nellie (Mrs. Vincent Doyle) - who married Esther Holten, both of Sioux falls, SD, Harry Sr., who married Bertha Myrlie, Larchwood; and (Mrs. Al Koplin), Alhambra, CA. They settled in Lyon County on a farm which he purchased northwest of in 1898 and then moved to Sioux Falls, SD in 1918. They were members of the Lutheran church. George passed 1942, while Minnie attained the age of 94 years and passed away in 1962 in Sioux Falls. GULK, HARRY SR. Gulk, Harry Sr. - born May 27, 1898 at Trosky, MN., and Bertha Myrlie born December 14, 1903 at Luverne, MN were married July 19, 1923, at Hills, MN. Harry and Bertha are the parents of five children- June (Mrs. Bernard Sevatson) and Beverly (Mrs. Clarence Brovold), both of Sioux Falls, SD; Carol Ann (Mrs. Glen McKenny) and Harry Jr. - married to Karen Krier, both of Larchwood; and Robert - who married Janetta Whitley, Torrance, CA. Harry and Bertha took over his father's farm northwest of Larchwood until they retired in 1966 and moved to Larchwood in 1970, where they still reside. They have 14 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. GULK, THOMAS Gulk, Thomas - was born in Flemsburg, Germany, September 9 1845. As a young man of 20 years, he immigrated to America in 1865 and settled at Davenport, IA. He was united in marriage to Elizabeth Gerdes in 1868. She was born in 1847. The couple had five children - George, Frank, Herman, Mary and Amanda (all deceased). They lived in Benton county and then in 1870 moved to Lyon county, IA and purchased a farm north of Larchwood, known now as the deWandel farm. Elizabeth died April 10, 1903, and Thomas on October 21, 1913. HAGGARDT, GEORGE was born June 18, 1884, at Lake View, Iowa. In June of 1910 George married Nellie Thompson, who was born December 29, 1886. Four children were born to this union, Marvin and Margaret (Mrs. Lawrence Gauger), both of Wheaton, Minnesota; Norma (Mrs. Merle Riess), Moorhead, Minnesota; and Merton of Willmar, Minnesota. Before her marriage Nellie taught school in the original wooden structure Larchwood school. In 1912 George bought the general merchandise store from his brother, John. The Haggards purchased a farm at Wheaton, Minnesota, in 1914 and moved to Wheaton, where Nellie still lives. George passed away in 1951. HAGGARDT, FRED was born January 23, 1890, in Lake View, Iowa., and his wife, Fern, were the parents of six children. Fred taught school at the Will Grotewold School. While in Larchwood Fred was cited for saving the life of a four year old neighbor boy, who had fallen into a well. Attracted by the mother's screaming, Fred ran to the well and lowered himself by the pipe and held the youngster above the water level until help could arrive. In 1910 Fred moved to Twin Falls, Idaho, where he passed away in 1965. HAGGARDT, HANS and Anna Margaret moved to Larchwood in 1905 from Lake View, Iowa. They were the parents of John, Kate, Jennie, Peter, Lou, George, Anna, and Fred (all deceased). The Haggardts owned a nursery in the southeast part of town. Anna passed away in Larchwood on December 24, 1908, and Hans in 1913. HAGGARDT, JOHN was born at Dundee, Illinois, on October 9, 1872. On June 21, 1899, he married Jessie Pearce at Milford, Iowa. They were the parents of three children, Hazel (Mrs. Jack Bizik), Tucson, Arizona; E. Vance (deceased), who was married to Sally Strong of Sioux Falls, South Dakota.; and John Joel of Palo Alto, California. John and Jessie moved to Larchwood in 1899, when John and his brother-in-law, Terkel Hansen, started the first general merchandise store in Larchwood. J.M. Haggardt & Co. was located on the west side of the main street. He sold the store to his brother, George, in 1912, and he and his family moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota. John passed away in March of 1941, and Jessie has also passed away. HANSEN, ED and Ruth Bjork were united in marriage on February 18, 1940. Ruth was born February 14, 1917 and Ed on February 9, 1916. They have three children, Janet and Darrel, married to Lee Ann Poppinga, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Wayne, at home. Since their marriage Ed and Ruth have farmed in the Larchwood vicinity an in 1948 purchase a farm west of Larchwood, where they now reside. HANSEN, TERKEL married Kate Haggardt on May 23, 1894, at Lake View, Iowa. Terkel was born March 23, 1871, in Denmark, and Kate on December 4, 1873, at Dundee, Illinois. Two children were born to this couple, Howard, and Helen (Mrs.George Shields), both of Seattle, Washington. The Hansens moved to Larchwood in 1899, when Terkel and Kate's brother, John, started the first general merchandise store in Larchwood. In 1904 Terkel sold his interest in the store to John. The Hansens then moved to Vashon, Washington, where Terkel organized the Vashon bank. Terkel passed away May 5, 1929, and Kate on May 13, 1955. HARTENHOFF, GARRET G. was born October 3, 1841, in Amsterdam, Holland. When he was 18 he came to America and settled in Springfield, Illinois, where he lived six years before he met and married Dorothea Webb. Dorothea was born April 3, 1847, in Dennengberg, Germany. They were blessed with six children, John, Garret, Henry, Dora, Minnie, and Ann (all deceased). In Springfield, Illinois, he attended the funeral of Abraham Lincoln in 1865. In 1891 he moved his family west and settled in Lyon County. They homesteaded land three miles south of Larchwood, paying $18 per acre for one half section of land. The Hartenhoffs retired to Larchwood in their later years. Garret died March 19, 1921, and Dorothea February 14, 1925. HECHT, ALBERT was born May 5, 1885, at Elkton, South Dakota, and Anna Bahr, born May 24, 1889, were married February 14, 1917. They had three sons, Donald, who married Alta Gluenkin; Melvin, who married Violet Erland, and Ernest, married to Florence Hackbarth, all of Larchwood. The Albert Hechts farmed northeast of Larchwood, except for an interval of four years, when they lived in Larchwood. Albert passed away May 20, 1958, and Anna on November 4, 1965. HECHT, DONALD and Alta Gluenkin were married on November 27, 1947, at Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Donald was born August 29, 1921, at Larchwood, and Alta on January 13, 1925, at Willow Lake, South Dakota. They have one son, Lynn, of Larchwood. Donald and Alta farmed northeast of Larchwood, and Donald is also an electrician. They moved into Larchwood in April of 1970. HECHT, ERNEST was born January 12, 1918, at Larchwood, and married Florence Hackbarth on May 17, 1941, at South Sioux City, Nebraska. Florence was born February 12, 1918, at Denver, Iowa. They have two children, Noreen, Richfield, Minnesota., and Lee, who married Dorothy Neville, Morton, Illinois. Ernest and Florence farm the east 80 acres of the original Jacob Bahr farm. HECHT, HERMAN FRED was born July 2, 1896, at Elkton, South Dakota. After coming to Larchwood, Fred and his brother, Edward, farmed together. On December 19, 1923, at Rock Rapids, Iowa, Fred married Mathilda Horn, who was born May 16, 1904, at Larchwood. They were the parents of two sons, Leonard, who married Jennie Harmsen, and Lawrence, married to Violet Ingalls, both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota Fred and Mathilda are now retired on their farm northeast of Larchwood. HECHT, MELVIN was born August 31, 1926, at Larchwood. Violet Erland was born December 11, 1924, at Howard, S.D. They were married September 18, 1947, at Sioux Falls, S.D., and are the parents of four children-Larry of Carroll, IA.; Sharon (Mrs. Roger Rossow), Sioux Falls, S.D.; David and Kevin, both at home. The Melvin Hechts farm east of Larchwood. HECHT, WILLIAM was born September 14, 1894, at Elkton, S.D. He worked on farms in the Larchwood vicinity and then served in World War I. On February 15, 1922, William married Carrie Bahr, who was born February 3, 1893. After their marriage William and Carrie farmed northeast of Larchwood until 1949, when they moved to Larchwood. HELGERSON, MORGAN was born on November 9, 1889, in Madison, Wisc., and Emma Reimers on March 20, 1888, at Holstein, IA. They were married Janury 30, 1913. The couple had five children, Fern and Linda (both deceased); Helene (Schnieder), Denver, Colo.; Alice (Susie), Larchwood; and Seth, who married Evelyn Kock, Sioux City, Iowa. The Helgersens came to Larchwood in 1932. Morgan was a city Marshall for many years and was in the livestock trucking business. Emma passed away on January 7, 1965, and Morgan now lives with his daughter, Alice. HELGESON, ALFRED O. was born August 15, 1887, and Karoline Helgerson was born January 13, 1891, both in Lyon County. They were married December 30, 1907, and have one daughter, Hazel (Mrs. Adolph Eisland), of Alexandria, Minn. In 1917 the Helgesons came to Klondike, Iowa, where Alfred owned and operated a blacksmith shop for 47 years. Alfred passed away February 17, 1969; Karoline lives with her daughter in Alexandria, Minn. She has four grandchildren and 11 great- grandchildren. HENDRIKS, HARRY, son of Mr. and Mrs. Gerrit Hendriks, was born in Holland, May 23, 1908. He came here with his father in 1924, at the age of 17. Harry began operation of a grocery store in 1935 where the present Security Savings Bank is now located. He relocated his business where the Larchwood firehouse now stands. On December 4, 1941, fire completely destroyed his establishment. He then moved to the Jack and Jill Grocery Store and later built a locker plant. During that time Harry went to the homes of the farmers, butchering livestock and cutting and processing meat. On October 12, 1943, he was the first man from Larchwood to join the Marine Corps. Upon his return from the service he again resumed his business until 1968 when ill health forced him to retire. He passed away October 15, 1971. HERBST, JOHN C., JR. was married to Emma Hecht of Lake Benton, Minn., on October 22, 1902, and lived on the farm northeast of Larchwood where his parents lived. John was born October 1, 1868, and Emma on November 5, 1882. They had three children, Verna, now living on the Herbst farm, John E., married to Mary Kerkvliet, and Pearl (Mrs. Richard Lowe), all of Larchwood. John passed away August 16, 1940, and Emma on March 3, 1970. HERBST, JOHN SR. was born February 15, 1845, in Plouw, Germany, and came to the United States in the spring of 1861. He served in the Civil War as a volunteer under General Sherman, where he was with a regiment that made the famous march "from Atlanta to the sea." Each member was greeted personally by President Lincoln. After his discharge from the service, John settled in Makena, Ill. Sophia Elsner was born October 15, 1845, at Schoenau, Macklenburg, Germany, and came to the United States on August 15, 1863, settling near Makena, Ill. John and Sophia were married October 7, 1866. They were the parents of six children, Louisa (Mrs. Henry Thompson), Lena (Mrs. John Tracy), Alvina (Mrs. John Cunningham), and John C., who married Emma Hecht, William, married to Lucy Zangger, and Charlie, who married Martha Pruitt and after her death married Verna Flannery. All the Herbst children are deceased. In 1882 the Herbsts moved to LeMars, IA, and in December of 1892 they moved to a farm northeast of Larchwood. Sophia passed away February 17, 1916, and John on December 27, 1925. HERBST, JOHN E. was born October 3, 1914, and on April 26, 1938, at St. Mary's Church, at Larchwood, was married to Mary Kerkvliet, who was born April 6, 1917. They have two daughters, Evelyn (Mrs. John Weidler), Howard, S.D., and Barbara (Mrs. James Stoos), Cherokee, Iowa. John and Mary live in Larchwood, where they were both born. John is a farm laborer and Mary is a surgical technician at Sioux Falls, S.D. They have two grandchildren. HERBST, WILLIAM F. married Lucy Zangger, on December 15, 1904. William was born February 6, 1874, and Lucy on May 4, 1887. They had one daughter, Mildred (Mrs. Paul Strait), deceased. William and Lucy farmed north of Larchwood for a few years and then moved into town, where they owned "The Sanitary Grocery" for several years. Lucy passed away February 5, 1919, and Bill on February 6, 1952. HEYER, F.C. was born on January 25, 1877, at Benton County, Iowa. On March 1, 1905, in Lyon County, Ferdinand married Anna Horn, who was born April 18, 1876, at Van Horne, Iowa. They were the parents of four children, Emma (Mrs. John Jyrlie) and a baby (both deceased); Arthur, married to Leona Lewis, Rock Rapids, IA.; and Vera (Mrs. Harvey Grotewold, Larchwood. The Heyers farmed northeast of Larchwood all their married life. They had nine grandchildren and 33 great- grandchildren. Ferdinand passed away November 15, 1949, and Anna on July 3, 1959. HOCKE, CHARLES O. SR. was born May 19, 1875. His wife, Mathlena Stiegelmeyer, was born January 2, 1877. They were married in Larchwood on March 29, 1900. The children are Garlet, who married Hilda Myrlie, and Sylvia (Mrs. Howard Lape), both of Larchwood. The Hockes farmed in Sioux Township and moved to town where Mathlena passed away September 19,1941. Charles died September 25, 1952. Their grandson, Robert Lewis, farms on the home place. HOCKE, GARLET, son of Mathlena nd Charles Hocke, married Hilda Myrlie on February 8, 1922, at Larchwood. Garlet was born April 17, 1901, at Lester, Iowa.; and Hilda was born in Norway, July 31, 1900. They are the parents of four children, Donna (Mrs. Axel Bonander, Jr.), Emeralda (Mrs. Edward Johns), Charles, Jr., who married Joyce Ihlen, all from Larchwood; and Darlene (Mrs. Willard Kuhnert) of Valley Springs. S.D. Garlet and Hilda have farmed northwest of Larchwood on the same place for 50 years. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in February, 1972. The Hockes have 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. HOECK, JOHN C. was born Feb. 19, 1854, and Fannie A. Houpp was born March 26, 1859, both in Germany. They were married in Benton county, IA, on January 22, 1879. The couple were the parents of 10 children, August, Rudolph, Minnie, John, Harry, Arnold, Ellen, and a baby (all deceased); Emma (Mrs. George Lewis), and Lenore (Mrs. J.A. Phelan), both of Larchwood. The Hoeckes came to Larchwood in 1891 to farm two miles north of town. Robert Lewis of the third generation is now living on the Hoeck Family farm. John passed away August 18, 1932; Fanny died on August 22, 1919. HOFFMAN, JOSEPH and Monica Kramer, who was born June 2, 1923, at Larchwood, were married September 17, 1966, at Sioux Falls, S.D. Monica lived on the family farm until it was sold in 1964. The Hoffmans presently live in Arco, Minn., and are engaged in farming. HOHMAN, ADAM was born December 18, 1868, in Germany, and Mary Mohr was born on April 10, 1874, in Benton County. They were married February 15, 1894, and were the parents of three children-Anna (Mrs. Max Middlen), deceased; Floyd, married to Naomi Hotvet, Larchwood; and Harvey, who married Oneva Egge, Canton, S.D. The Hohmans moved to Larchwood in 1905, where Adam was one of the pioneer cattle feeders of the area. Mary passed away July 19, 1929. In 1940 Adam married Lydia Duncan of Aberdeen, S.D. Adam lived to be 94 years old and passed away July 31, 1963. Lydia passed away August 28, 1967. HOHMAN, FLOYD J. was born in Van Horne, Iowa, July 87, 1904. He moved to Larchwood in 1905. Naomi Mae Hotvet was born in Logan Township on February 26, 1907. They were married July 9, 1929, at the First Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls, S.D. Their three sons are, Dr. Paul, who married Rosamond Romey, Canton, S.D.; Dale, married to Janet Boschker, Vestal, N.Y.; and Mark, of Larchwood. Floyd belonged to the first 4-H Club in Lyon County, and went to the International Livestock show in Chicago, Ill. The Hohmans farm west of Larchwood. HOHMAN, HARVEY MOHR born June 4, 1910, at Larchwood, and Oneva Egge, born March 23, 1909, were married November 5, 1931. They have three children, Mary Ann, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Jerome, who married Beatrice Monttolvo, Dovey, Nebr.; and Ronald, who married Carolyn Eliason, Larchwood. Harvey was a farmer and stockman in this vicinity until retiring recently in Canton, S.D. Oneva and Harvey are members of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. HOHMAN, RONALD J. was born October 13, 1936, and his wife, Carolyn Eliason, was born January 29, 1938. They were married February 28, 1958, and have four children, Brent, Kyra, Kim and Gwen, all at home. They are farmers and residing on the Harvey Hohman farm. The family are members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church. HOLLY, OSCAR E. was born on October 20, 1880, in Illinois. In 1905 he moved to Larchwood, where he organized the Farmers Savings Bank. On March 9, 1910, Oscar married Anna Haggardt, who was born September 30, 1886, at Lake View, Iowa. They were the parents of two children, Chester (deceased) and Joloise (Mrs. William Brusnigham), Sioux Falls, S.D. Oscar organized the Granite Savings Bank in 1920, which moved its charter to Larchwood in 1934 and became known as the Security Savings Bank. He also organized the Farmers State Bank in Kanaranzi, Minn., and the Overland Agency and Garage in Larchwood, which he operated for several years. From 1923 to 1931 Anna was cashier at the Granite Savings Bank. In 1931 the Hollys moved to a cattle ranch in the northeastern part of South Dakota and then retired and moved to Brandon, S.D., in 1960. Oscar passed away May 22, 1963, and Anna on October 7, 1971. HOLTSCLAW, Z.T. physician and surgeon, was born in Indiana in 1847. At Mt. Vernon, Iowa, in 1878, he married Sarah D. Esget, who was born in New York on April 4, 1848. They were the parents of two children, Ralph and Anna (both deceased). Sarah was a talented artist and art teacher. The doctor served long and faithfully in the Larchwood community. She passed away September 23, 1923, and he in 1930. HONRATH, LEO was born July 21, 1912, at Salem, S.D. Rose Kerkvliet, born October 3, 1915, at Alvord, Iowa, married Leo on December 28, 1937, at St. Mary's Catholic Church at Larchwood. They have 10 children, Karen (deceased); Mary (Mrs. Eugene Kappenman) Portage, Wisc.; John, who married Carole Wehner, Marietta, Ga.; Rosalie (Mrs. Donal Campbell), Minneapolis, Minn.; Donald, married to Ann Tobalski, Sun Prairie, Wisc.; Stephen, who married Wanda Bowdain, Warner Robins, Ga.; Daniel, Des Moines, Iowa, Frances, Allan, and Julie, all at home. Leo came to this vicinity in 1935. The Honraths farm east of Larchwood. HORN, CLAUS was born in Germany on September 22, 1847, and came to the United States at the age of 20. He married Matilda Braak on March 11, 1871, at Davenport, Iowa. She was born in Germany on December 23, 1844. The Horn children were Claus (deceased), Herman, married to Anna Kortum; Henry, married to Bertha Heyer; Anna (Mrs. F.C. Heyer); John-married to Lizzie Viereck; William, married to Dora Sievers; Emma (Mrs. Otto Biteler); and Clara (Mrs. Clyde Lape), all deceased. The Horn family first lived in Benton County, Iowa. They then came to Larchwood and Claus purchased his farm from Mr. Sykes in 1886. The farm is now owned by a great-grandson, Rolland Viereck. Matilda passed away February 19, 1898, and Claus on May 1, 1915. HORN, HARRY C. was born April 12, 1909, the son of John and Lizzie Horn. He was united in marriage to Laura Polzin on March 23, 1932. She was born February 17, 1908, and is the daughter of Fred and Martha Polzin. Harry and Laura are the parents of twin sons, Ronald, who married Arla Thielman, and Donald, married to Lorna Egebo, both of Larchwood. There are three grandchildren. Ronald is engaged in farming with his father. A large poultry house with a 12,000 laying cage capacity was recently erected on the farm east of town, where Donald and Lorna now live. HORN, HENRY was born February 22, 1874, at Davenport, Iowa, and with his parents moved to Van Horne, Iowa, when he was two years old. In 1890 the family settled on a farm one mile north of Larchwood, where he worked with his father until his marriage to Bertha Heyer on April 26, 1900. She was born December 28, 1880. Bertha and Henry were the parents of two daughters, Martha (Mrs. Albert Schlotfeldt), Hills, Minn., and Ivy (Mrs. Ed Viereck) of Larchwood. The Horns moved to the farm across the road from the home place, where they lived until they retired to Larchwood in 1941. Bertha passed away May 5, 1947, and Henry on March 14, 1969. HORN, HERMAH was born September 1, 1872, at Davenport, Iowa. Anna Kortum was born November 13, 1872, in Germany, and came to America in 1894. They were married January 27, 1898, and were blessed with seven children, Henry and Elmer (both deceased); Mathilda (Mrs. Fred Hecht), Larchwood; Leona (Mrs. Waldo Nieman), Rock Rapids, Iowa; Vernon, married to Mary Graham, Montrose, S.D.; Virgil married to Verna Heyer, George, Iowa; and Velma (Mrs. Sam Wierenga), Sioux Falls, S.D. Herman and Anna farmed northeast of Larchwood all their married life. They had 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Anna passed away May 21, 1934, and Herman on September 1, 1958. HORN, JOHN and Lizzie Viereck were married December 20, 1904, at Sioux Falls, S.D. John was born August 4, 1880, at Van Horne, Iowa, and Lizzie on February 11, 1886, at New Liberty, Iowa. They were the parents of three children-Mabel (Mrs. Otto Sellden), Isanti, Minn.; Leona (Mrs. Gerald May), Rapid City, S.D. and Harry, who married Laura Polzin, Larchwood. After their marriage John and Lizzie farmed northeast of Larchwood until 1950, when they moved into town. They had four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. John passed away May 31, 1958, and Lizzie on July 15, 1965. HORN, WILLIAM was born March 26, 1882, at Van Horne, Iowa, and married Dora Sievers on March 12, 1913, at Larchwood. Dora was born February 24, 1890, at Remsen, Iowa, and came to Larchwood when she was six years old. William and Dora farmed just north of Larchwood on the home place until William's death on December 8, 1968. Dora moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa, for four years and then to Sioux Falls, S.D., where she now resides. HOTVET, OLE C. was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa, on September 23, 1872. Martha Foss was born in a dugout on the Foss homestead in Richland Township on September 27, 1875. They were married at Inwood, July 9, 1896, and became parents of Inez and Olive, (both deceased); Alice (Mrs. E.M.Coffield), Midland, Tex.; Stella (Mrs. Albert Berdahl) and Murial (Mrs. Gifford Berkland, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Ruby (Mrs.Emil Jacobsen), Rock Valley, Iowa; Naomi (Mrs. Floyd Hohman), Larchwood; Ruth (Mrs. LeRoy Holland), Inwood, Iowa; Grace (Mrs. Edwin Geick), Rock Rapids, Iowa; and Milton, married to Eva Albertson, Madison, S.D. The Hotvets farmed in Logan Township, moving to the tri-state farm just west of the "iron post" in 1914 and then to a farm near Colton, S.D., in 1939. Martha and seven of her daughters were schoolteachers. Ole passed away on April 23, 1941, and Martha on July 1, 1946. HUGHES, MICHAEL was born in LaSalle, Ill., on March 7, 1855. He moved with his parents to Clinton County, Iowa, which was later known as the Hughes settlement. On November 27, 1879, at Lyons, Iowa, he married Ellen Mullen, who was born November 20, 1859, at Brooklyn, N.Y. They were the parents of five children, Richard, Mayme, and William (all deceased); Ellen (Mrs. Daniel Lynch), Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Thomas of Billings, Mont. In 1893 the Hughes family moved to a farm northwest of Larchwood, where they lived until 1918 when they moved into Larchwood. Michael and Ellen had eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and six great, great-grandchildren. Michael passed away on March 13, 1930, and Ellen in 1938. JOHNSON, ANDREW G. was born July 18, 1853, in Sweden. Anna Bowers was born May 3, 1853, in Maryland. Andrew and Anna were married October 28, 1875. They were the parents of four children, Ethel, Edmo, Robert and Earl (all deceased). The Johnsons came to Lyon county, Iowa, around 1891. He farmed on what is now the Floyd Hohman farm. They were charter members of the Methodist Church. Andrew died January 24, 1927, and Anna on March 26, 1936. JOHNSON, JOSEPH E. was born in Lincoln county, SD, on October 28, 1882. He came to Lyon county and on June 20, 1923, married Phoebe Swanson, who was born January 19, 1900. They have three children, Joyce (Whitcher) and Carol (Ball), both of Sioux Falls, SD.; and Calvin, who married Darlene Wettestad, Larchwood. Joe was a cattle feeder in the west end of the county, where his son Calvin now lives. Joe and Phoebe retired to Sioux Falls, SD, in 1948. Joseph died April 7, 1952, and Phoebe died on March 16, 1971. JOHNSON, ROBERT was born in Canada and married Louisa Blue. Three children were born to this union, Hugh and Merle (both deceased) and Maud of Rio Hondao, Tex. Maud, now 91 years old, is the only living relative. The Johnsons farmed in eastern Iowa before Robert passed away in 1930. KEHOE, CHARLES was born August 15, 1842, in Ireland. He married Margaret Langan, who was born in Long Grove, Iowa, in 1850. They were the parents of four children, James, Martin, Tessie, and Maria (all deceased). The Kehoes purchased a farm south of Larchwood in 1890 and also operated a livery stable in Larch for a few years. After Margaret passed away in 1889, Charles lived with the James' family until his death on December 27, 1925. KEHOE, JAMES was born September 20, 1882; and his wife, Mae McKenna, was born August 11, 1884. They were married January 9, 1907, and were blessed with three daughters, Theresa (deceased); Cleola (Schreurs), Cushing, Iowa; and Helen (O'Connor), San Diego, Calif. The Kehoe family came to Larchwood in 1917, where James and his father operated a livery stable. They moved away in 1926. James passed away August 7, 1948. Mae lives in Cushing, Iowa, with her daughter, Cleola. KELLY, NEIL and Helen Bruggeman were married at St. Mary's Church in Lardhwood on August 16, 1928. Neil was born August 7, 1904; Helen was born January 9. 1903. They became the parents of five children, Keith and Patrick (both deceased); Kathleen (Mrs. William Wilka), Janet (Mrs. Harold Viereck), and Paul, who married Cheryl Jarding, all of Sioux Falls, S.D. After their marriage the Kellys lived in Luverne, Minn., until 1930 when they moved to Larchwood. Neil was a feed salesman and later a carpenter. Helen was a schoolteacher and for the past few years has been treasurer of Larchwood. Helen has 22 grandchildren. Neil passed away July 6, 1949. KELLY, PATRICK H. was born in 1873 in Benton County, Iowa, and Frances M. Gardiner was born in 1872. They were married at Keystone, Iowa, in 1902. Patrick and France were blessed with five children, William (deceased), Mary (Mrs. Mark Rielly), Van Horrne, Iowa; Roy, Arlington, Iowa; Kenneth, Norway, Iowa; and Gerald of Portland, Ore. The Kellys came to the Larchwood area and farmed for many years. Patrick built and operated the Ford garage in Larchwood and then moved back to Benton County. Frances' father, William Gardiner, came to make his home and lived with them for 23 years until his death in 1926. Frances passed away in 1960 and Patrick in 1965. KELLY, PATRICK and Mary Barry, both of Van Horne, Iowa, were born August 11, 1870, and January 25, 1871, respectively. They were married January 25, 1899, and came to Lyon County the same year, settling on a farm northeast of Larchwood. Six children were born to this union, Lloyd, Ralph, Neil, Ronald and Leona (all deceased); and Catherine (Schulte) of Rock Rapids, Iowa. Mary passed away on February 18, 1925 and Patrick on August 13, 1949. KERKVLIET, GERARD was born in Holland on August 26, 1889 and his wife, Mathilda VanAcken was born September 30, 1890 at Hull, Iowa. They were married November 26, 1912 at Alvord, Iowa, and were the parents of eight children, Rose (Honrath), F.G., who married Virginia Honrath, William, married to Eileen Breuer, and Robert, who married Jeannette Tracy, all of Larchwood; Marcella (Bennett), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mary (Swanson), Detroit, Mich.; Veronica (Gradert), Luverne, Minn.; and Agnes (Friedrich) of Lester, Iowa. Gerard came to the United States with his parents and 15 brothers and sisters in 1893 and settled east of town. After their marriage, Gerard and Mathilda farmed at Alvord, Iowa, and then Elkton, S.D., before coming to the Larchwood area. Gerard and J.H. Roemen started the local Farmers Elevator in the summer of 1938. The Kerkvliets moved to Sioux Falls, S.D. in 1946 and then returned to build a new home in Larchwood. Gerard passed away January 13, 1959, and Mathilda on June 6, 1963. KERKVLIET, ROBERT L. was born to Gerard and Mathilda Kerkvliet in Larchwood, Iowa, on June 7, 1932. His wife, Jeannette (Jenny) Tracy, was born October 11, 1933, to Sylvester and Kathryn Tracy. They were married June 10, 1953, at St. Mary's Church in Larchwood. They are the parents of six children, Kathryn, Anthony, Kenneth, Scott, Laura and Vicki, all at home. Bob served in the U.S. Air Force for four years, before becoming postmaster in August 1968. KINNEY, HERBERT was born at Larchwood on December 16, 1899, was united in marriage to Leona Grubich on August 7, 1933, at Pipestone, Minn. To this union were born three children, Annastasia (Mrs. John Miller), St. Paul Minn.; Cecilia (Mrs. Stan Meyer), Rochester, Minn.; and Ruth Ann (Mrs. Gene Greathouse), Camanche, Iowa. The Kinneys are now retired and live in Pipestone, Minn. KINNEY, JOSEPH was born February 21, 1895, at Larchwood. On July 22, 1924, at Garretson, S.D., he married Inex Groth, who was born September 23, 1903. To this union were born three children, Florence (Holten) and James, married to Lois Nugent, both of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Eugene, who married Margaret Gordon, San Pedro, California. Inez and Joseph are now retired and living in Sioux Falls, S.D. KINNEY, PATRICK was born February 22, 1855, and Ellen Watters, born at Peterville, Iowa, on August 7, 1860, were married March 27, 1883, at Lost Nation, Iowa. They became the parents of 12 children, William, Rose, Frank, George, Mary, Raymond, and Walter (all deceased); Sister Mary Philip, Manitowoc, Wisc.; John, married to Lulu Conway, San Diego, Calif.; Joseph-married to Inez Groth, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Vera (Jernberg), Seattle, Wash.; and Herbert, who married Leona Grubich, Pipestone, Minn. The Kinneys came to Lyon County in 1891 and settled on a farm southwest of Larchwood where they lived for many years. They moved to Garretson, S.D., and later to Verdi, Minn. Patrick passed away April 4, 1933, and Ellen on August 16, 1933. KINNEY, WILLIAM lived on a farm south of Larchwood for several years and on July 2, 1908, he was united in marriage to Mary Early of Lost Nation, Iowa, in the St. James Catholic Church of Toronto, Iowa. William was born March 1, 1884, and Mary on November 1, 1882. There were eight children, Mary (deceased); Edward, married to Agnes Grubich, Calamus, Iowa; Anthony, married to Lydia Stenass, and Marvin, who married Helen Stenass, both of Clinton, Iowa; William, Jr., Clarence, married to Grace Webber, and Earl, all of Grand Mound, Iowa; and Susan (Mrs. Ardo Junk), Bellevue, Iowa. In 1912 the family moved to Clinton County, Iowa. William, Sr. passed away August 14, 1963; Mary is living with her two sons, William and Earl, near Grand Mound, Iowa. KOCH, ORLO was born November 30, 1923, at Hudson, S.D., and his wife, Doris Middlen, was born October 18, 1923 at Larchwood. They were married on August 8, 1946, at Larchwood. They have three children, Jeanine (Mrs. Ray Buddenhagen) of St. Louis, Mo.; Donna (Mrs. David Langenhorst), and Paul, both of Larchwood. The Koch family lives on a farm south of Larchwood. KRAMER, EDWARD, son of George Kramer, was born April 26, 1906. He attended St. Mary's school and lived on the family farm southeast of Larchwood until it was sold in 1964. He then moved into Larchwood and lived there until his death on May 13, 1971. KRAMER, GEORGE, son of Jacob and Elizabeth Kramer, was born March 3, 1873, and Theresa Wagner was born February 7, 1880, both in Dubuque County, IA. In 1888 George's family moved to Lyon County, where they made their home on a farm in Doon township. In 1897 they moved to the family farm in Lyon County. George and Theresa were married May 24, 1898, at Worthington, IA. They were the parents of seven children, Elizabeth and Edward (both deceased); Mary (Mrs. John Clercx), Rock Rapids, Iowa; Monica (Mrs. Joseph Hoffman), Arco, MN; William, who married Clara Bruggeman, Clara (Mrs. Paul Krier), and Leo, married to Mary Agnes Clercx, all of Larchwood. The Kramers farmed on the home place and lived there during their entire married life. George helped organize the first Farmers Elevator and served as its first president. Theresa passed away March 4, 1956, and George on August 14, 1964. KRAMER, LEO and Mary Agnes Clercx were married June 21, 1938, at Larchwood. Leo was born July 27, 1908, and Mary Agnes on September 27, 1912, both at Larchwood. They have three children, Rosalie (Mrs. Ray Weber), Salem, S.D.; Rodney, who married Marlis Scharn, Florence, Wisc.; and Royal, Sioux Falls, S.D. The Kramers have lived on a farm southeast of Larchwood, where they still reside. They retired in 1971. Leo and Mary Agnes have four grandchildren. KRAMER, URBAN and Mary Snyders Roemen were married November 27, 1965, and farmed at Alvord, Iowa, until they moved into Larchwood in 1970. Mary was born on March 5, 1916, and Urban on October 28, 1911. Urban now farms in the Larchwood area. Mary is president of St. Mary's Altar Society. She is the daughter of the Frank Snyders and was married August 31, 1937, to Joseph Roemen. Joe was born December 17, 1911. They became the parents of five children, Theresa (Mrs. Gerald Ripperda), Robert, married to Mary Jo Clercx, and Leonard-married to Nancy Grotewold, all of Larchwood; Marilyn (Mrs. Larry Schlotfeldt), Alvord, Iowa; and Karen, attending Briar Cliff College, Sioux City, Iowa. Joe and Mary farmed at Larchwood until his death September 17, 1963. KRAMER, WILLIAM was born February 18, 1900, at Lyon County, Iowa, and Clara Bruggeman, born April 6, 1899, at St. Mary's Iowa, were married January 24, 1922, at Templeton, Iowa. They were the parents of 10 children, Virgil, Wilbur and Luverne (all deceased); Bernadette (Mrs. Don Bauer), Marvin, married to Betty Grotewold, Leonard, Melvin, and Ronald, who married Arla Viereck, all of Larchwood; Leota (Mrs.Roger Rollag;), Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mary Janet ( Mrs. Roger Hartman), Garretson, S.D. The Kramers farmed until moving into Larchwood, where they still reside. William worked for the Grotewold Motor Company as a mechanic until his retirement. William and Clara have 12 grandchildren. KRIER, JOSEPH and Elizabeth Kramer were married May 24, 1921, at Larchwood. Elizabeth was born March 23, 1902 at Larchwood; Joseph was born January 21, 1898, at Emery, S.D. The couple had 13 children, Kenneth, Rosemary, Clair and Joseph, Jr., (all deceased), Colette (Mrs. Hugo Graber), Bridgewater, S.D.; Cleo-married to Frances Doherty, Pierre, S.D.; Eugene, married to Joan Allen, San Gabriel, Calif.; Barbara (Mrs. Tom Gloe), Minneapolis, Minn.; George, who married Cecile Monson, Watertown, S.D.; Marjorie (Mrs. Eugene Roberts) and Betty (Mrs. Vincent Bruggeman), both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Eileen (Mrs. Paul Bruggeman) and Joan (Mrs. Paul Snyders), both of Larchwood. The Kriers lived at Emery, S.D. and farmed there until 1935, when they moved to a farm west of Larchwood. In 1949 they moved into town where Joseph still lives and operates a corn sheller. Elizabeth passed away November 10, 1953. KRIER, PAUL was born January 5, 1898, at Emery, S.D., and Clara Kramer, born June 23, 1904, at Larchwood, were married September 11, 1923 at Larchwood. They were the parentsof nine children, Robert (deceased); Raphael (Bud), who married Janie Barnhill, Beamen, Iowa; Loren, married to Patricia Klein, Beresford, S.D.; Donald married to Jeannine Lynch, Paullina, Ia.; James, married to Muriel Flanagan, Ringstead, Ia.; Ruth (Mrs. James Snyders) and Karen (Mrs. Harry Gulk, Jr.), both of Larchwood; Dorothy (Mrs. Orlo Bjerk) and Gary, who married Bonnie Wiblemo, both of Sioux Falls, S.D. The Kriers farmed at Emery, S.D. until 1940, when they moved to Larchwood. They have 47 grandchildren and seven great- grandchildren. Paul passed away September 5, 1971 and Clara still lives in Larchwood. KRUGER, AUGUST and Annette Lee were married July 19, 1893 at Larchwood. August was born March 23, 1859 at Manitowoc, Wisc. Annette was born February 28, 1875 in Norway and came to the United States when she was four years old. August and Annette had six children-Bernice, Cora and Annie (all deceased); Liala (Mrs. Ben Nelson), Inwood, Ia.; Roy, married to Joyce Hanson, Longview, Wash.; and Alice (Mrs. Carl Bjorklund), Madison, S.D. In 1905 the Krugers built a new home east of Klondike, where the family grew up. August operated the flourmill at Klondike until about 1922, when he sold it to J.H. Rowe & Son of Canton, S.D. August passed away August 27, 1927 and Annette on February 6, 1937. KRUGER, CHRISTIAN FREDRICK was born September 30, 1831, in Germany, and came to the United States in 1851 to a farm near Sibley, Iowa. He married Wilhelmina Beyersdorff in 1853 at Reedsville, Wisc. They were the parents of 10 children, August, Lou, Fredrick, Otto, Albert, Amelia, Ella, Wilhelmina, Julius and Emma (all deceased). In 1883 the family moved to the Larchwood area and settled near Klondike, where Christian built a large flour mill. After a few years they left Klondike and took up a claim near Wisner, Nebr. Their two sons, August and Lou, then operated the mill. Christian passed away May 18, 1911, and Wilhelmina on May 15, 1912. LAPE, HOWARD was born January 6, 1902, at Bismark, Ill., and was united in marriage to Sylvia Hocke on February 8, 1927. She was born January 19, 1909. They are the parents of Eugene (Bahrenfuss-Sutton), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Betty (Mrs. John Doornwaard), Gibsonia, Pa.; and Marvin, who married Sharon Rasmussen, Larchwood. After their marriage, the Lapes farmed northwest of Larchwood until moving into Larchwood in 1964. LAPE, THOMAS M. from Pickstown, Ohio, was born September 15, 1860 and married Emma Cunningham from Bismark, Ill., on September 1, 1886. Emma was born March 24, 1870. They had eight sons and two daughters,-Barton, Elmer and Alva (all deceased); Grace (Grimm-Sorg), Luverne, Minn.; Fred, and Lester-who married Ruth Armstrong, both of Vancouver, Wash.; John-married to Helen Schmidt, Omaha, Nebr.; Ersul-who married Clara Flannagen, Fort Dodge, Ia.; Lois (Winter), Rock Valley, Ia.; and Howard-married to Sylvia Hocke of Larchwood. The Lapes came to Lyon County in 1902 and moved to their farm north of Larchwood in 1914. Thomas was known as a fine horseman and always drove a matched team with excellent harness. They retired to live in Larchwood. Emma passed away May 1, 1926 and Thomas on December 13, 1945. LAWLER, FRANK was born June 15, 1848, at Janesville, Wisc.; and his wife, Catherine Nichols, was born April 10, 1862 in Porter, Wisc. They were married in Wisconsin on April 19, 1888, and became the parents of six children-Joseph, John, James and George (all deceased); Elizabeth (Mrs. Roy Malloy), Downey, Calif.; and Vera (Mrs. Clem Allen), Alvord, Ia. Frank and Catherine moved from Edgerton, Wisconsin in 1888 and operated a restaurant next to the bank building. They added on to their restaurant building and put in a stock of furniture and later established a hotel in place of the furniture store. Frank was the postmaster and mayor of Larchwood. The Lawlers moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1915. Catherine passed away on March 14, 1922 and Frank in December of 1940. LENS, GEORGE was born to John and Marie Lens on August 6, 1912, was married to Delores Roemen on January 29, 1940. She was born May 1, 1919, the daughter of John and Nettie Roemen of Larchwood. Their children are: Mary Ann (Mrs. Darwin Schaff), Roger-married to Shirley Faber, and Richard, all of Larchwood; Josephine (Mrs. Don Patton) of Inwood, Ia.; and Eileen (Mrs. Larry Otter), Ruthton, Minn. Delores and George farmed north of Larchwood until 1954 when they moved to town and bought the recreation center, which he managed until 1965. He now works with the county maintenance. George served as fire chief for 13 years and is a member of the Town Council. LENS, JOHN was born in Holland on February 16, 1866. His wife, Marie Van Leeuwen, was also born in Holland, on July 27, 1878. John and Marie were married May 14, 1900, and came to America in 1902. They landed in New York and came directly to Larchwood. Four children were born to this union-Alieda (Mrs. John Scholten), Emma (Mrs. Ben VanVooren), and George-married to Dolores Roemen, all of Larchwood; and Charles-who married Agatha Underberg, Rock Rapids, Ia. John worked as a laborer for several years, and in 1912 they purchased a farm north of Larchwood. John passed away on December 26, 1938. Marie moved into Larchwood in 1940, where she still lived until her death on December 21, 1967. LEWIS, BENJAMIN H. was born November 15, 1888, at Larchwood, the son of Edward and Mary Lewis. He was united in marriage on March 7, 1916 to Ethel Tatge, who was born February 29, 1896, at Bruce, Minn. Two children blessed their home- Adrian, Luverne, Minn., and Ducille (Mrs. Kenneth Patton), of Rock Rapids, Ia. The Lewises were in the cafe business in Larchwood for many years. They then moved to the Beaver Creek, Minn. vicinity. He passed away May 14, 1954 and she on June 11, 1955. LEWIS, BERT was born April 21, 1873 at the Edward Lewis farm near Klondike, Ia. He was married September 26, 1906, to Rosa Ann Christiansen. They had three children-Irene (deceased); Raymond, of Ontario, Calif.; and Alyce (Jammer), from Rock Rapids, Ia. Until 1916 the Lewises lived on a farm northwest of Larchwood, which is now occupied by Dean Sheeler. Later he became a railroad section employee until his retirement. He passed away November 20, 1947. Rosa still lives in Fontana, Calif. LEWIS, EDWARD W. was born Feb. 23, 1834 in Delaware Co., PA son of William J. Lewis a miller. In 1869 Edward Sr. came to Lyon County, Iowa and bought a farm. He married Mary E. Hutchinson 28 Oct. 1869 who was b. PA April 3, 1853 to this union they had 15 children: William H., Laura E., Harry F, Emma , Mary E., Samuel H., May L., Frank G. Edward W., Edith M., Edward W. (2d), Benjamin H., Jennie T. George W. and the baby, dead. Edward was a Civil War veteran. The Lewises had much tragedy during the 1880's. Diphtheria struck the Lewis home, causing five children to die within 12 days. It was decided to burn the home and everything in it, including clothes, furniture, and pictures, in an effort to stop the spread of the disease. Soon after this one son accidentally shot his brother with a gun that had been used to hunt food. Edward passed away September 19, 1903 and Mary on March 27, 1920. LEWIS, FRANK was born near Larchwood on November 26, 1882, and Lillian Mae Christiansen was born March 30, 1888. They were married March 10, 1904 and farmed in Centennial Township. Fourteen children were born to this union- Mildred, Marjorie, Edward, Ina Mae and George (all deceased); Leona (Heyer), Joyce (VerMeer), and Vernon-who married Florence Leona Grotewold, all of Rock Rapids, Ia.; Merle (Pete), Okanogan, Wash.; Lloyd, San Bernadino, Calif.; Edward-married to Clara Roemen, Ellsworth, Minn.; Frank, Jr. (Tubby), Wood Dale, Ill.; Iona (Waagmeester), Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Nina (Davis) of Poyen, Ark. Lillian passed away on November 9, 1956, and Frank on July 5, 1957. LEWIS, GEORGE was born in Larchwood February 22, 1892, to Edward and Mary Lewis who were early settlers of Lyon County. George married Emma Hoeck, daughter of John and Fannie Hoeck, on May 28, 1914. Emma was born April 18, 1893. They became the parents of five children-Delight (Kilburn), Mitchell, S.D.; Randall- who married Vera Kroeger, and Robert-married to Rita Ripperda, both of Larchwood; Lyle-who married Phyllis Tracy, Valley Springs, S.D.; and Leslie (Lt. /Col.)-married to Zelda Johnson, Vandenberg A.F.B., Calif. The Lewises farmed in South Dakota; later moving two miles north of Larchwood, where they farmed for many years. They moved into Larchwood in 1957. George passed away January 10, 1961. LEWIS, ROBERT was born to George and Emma Lewis on May 4, 1922 at Valley Springs, S.D. His wife, Rita Ripperda, was born June 26, 1922 at Larchwood. They were married at Oklahoma City, Okla., on May 9, 1943. They have three children- Cindy, Allen and Leann all at home. Robert served his tour of duty in the navy in the South Pacific. They have farmed north of Larchwood on Bob's Grandfather Hoeck's place for the past several years. LEWIS, VERNON and Florence Leona Grotewold were married at Larchwood on December 1, 1945. Leona was born March 24, 1923, and Vernon on September 22, 1921, both at Larchwood. They have four children-Sandra (Mrs. Gary Schacht) and Diane (Mrs. Mark Ripperda), both of Larchwood; Wayne-who married Ann Staley, Wichita Falls, Tex.; and Karen at home. The Lewises farmed northwest of Larchwood for 15 years. Vernon then was employed in Sioux Falls, S.D., before becoming custodian at the West Lyon Community School. They are now living in Rock Rapids, Ia., where Vernon is the custodian of the Central Lyon Community School. Vernon and Leona have one grandchild. LONG, CARL (Charley) was born June 1, 1861, and married Emma P. Johnson of Canton, SD., on June 6, 1896. Emma was born May 31, 1874. They were the parents of Fromalt and Rosella (both deceased); John and Amanda - who live on the home place. Betty (Mrs. Gilmer Hildring), Joe - married to Lou Swanson. and David, all of Larchwood; Rev. Axel - who married Margaret Vinzant, and Palmer - married to Isabelle Peterson, both of Sioux Falls, SD; Josephine (Mrs. Fred Oltmann), Lennox, SD; Ferdinand - married to Helena McCain, and Carl - who married Bernice Haas, both of Harrisburg, SD. The family made their home on the Long homestead by the Big Sioux River, where Charley and Emma lived until their deaths - Charley on December 1, 1949 and Emma on May 3, 1963. LONG, JOHN DANIELSON was born August 17, 1832 in Vadstena, Sweden; his wife, Johanna Blomstedt, was born May 5, 1832. They were the parents of Augusta, Carl and Ferdinand (all deceased). John first came to Sioux City, IA from Sweden in 1868. The following year he secured homestead rights to a farm nice miles west of Larchwood and bordering the Big Sioux River. In the early days the Long home was a landmark for travelers, as the road passed through the farm for a river crossing ot South Dakota. Johanna passed away February 27, 1887 and John died March 13, 1896. LOWE, RICHARD was born in Germany September 24, 1897. He came to the United States in 1914 and settled in Cincinnati, Ohio, later moving to Larchwood in 1919. Richard married Pearl Herbst on February 25, 1931. Pear was born November 27, 1903. One daughter, Ruth (Mrs. Keith Eilers), lives in Huron, S.D. The Lowes live on a farm east of Larchwood. They attend the United Church of Christ. LUNDQUIST, FRANK was born in 1851 and came to America in 1856, settling on a farm at Lindsborg, Kansas. He married Maria Christina Anderson on November 12, 1876, at Lindsborg, Kansas. She was born February 27, 1852. Both Maria and Frank were born in Smoland, Sweden. They were the parents of six children-Albert, Oliver, Oscar, Hilma, Effie and Vendla (all deceased). The Lundquists later moved to Larchwood, leaving in 1902 to homestead at Granville, N.D. Maria died on October 28, 1913 and Frank in 1923. LYNCH, DANIEL C. was born October 15, 1886 at Street, Ill. He was married to Ellen Hughes at Larchwood on November 27, 1912. She was born on June 11, 1887. The couple had three children-Mary Catherine (deceased); Dorothy, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Father Dan, Fonda, Ia. The Lynches were farmers and lived northwest of Larchwood on the home place. Daniel passed away January 18, 1924. Ellen is living in Sioux Falls with her daughter, Dorothy. LYNCH, JOHN M. JR. was born August 15, 1888 and Mary Carey on July 26, 1886, both at Marcus, Ia. They were married June 6, 1916, and became the parents of five children-James (deceased); Marjorie (Mrs. Walter Weber), Ronald-married to Ardell Christensen, Howard-married to Nancy Faulkner, and Lois Ann (Mrs. Arsene Wythein), all of Sioux Falls, S.D. The Lynch family farmed west of Larchwood until 1937, when they moved to Sioux Falls. There are 26 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mary passed away November 12, 1960. John still resides in Sioux Falls. LYNCH, JOHN M. SR. was born June 2, 1854, in Blackstone, Ill.; Catherine Louisa Lyons was born February 1, 1855 in Cleveland, Ohio. They were married April 4, 1877, in Odell, Ill. The couple had five children-Catherine, Mary, Daniel, and Clara (all deceased); John of Sioux Falls, S.D. In 1889 the Lunches moved to Marcus, Ia.; and in 1890 they purchased a farm west of Larchwood for $12.50 an acre. They grew mostly wheat on their farm, as this was thought to be wheat country in those days. Catherine passed away in 1938 and Johhn in 1941.
