A special thanks to Darlene Jacoby and Diane Johnson for typing these biographies. * MARTIN, JOHN F. was born in 1866 in Alamakee County, Iowa, and came to the Larchwood community in 1888. He married Mary Tracy on February 22, 1892. She was born on September 4, 1874 in Janesville, Wisc., the daughter of Edward and Catherine Tracy. They came to Iowa in the early 1880's in a covered wagon. Mary and John were the parents of four children-William, Charles, Bernice, and John (all deceased). Johnny was a well-known professional boxer. The Martins had 15 grandchildren. They engaged in farming, and he was also a carpenter. John passed away in December of 1925 and Mary on February 17, 1959. MASTERS, L.P. (BUD) was born April 18, 1911, and his wife, Hazel Reuter, on June 15, 1912, both at Humboldt, S.D. Bud and Hazel were married November 29, 1932, and became the parents of four children-Bonnie (Mrs. Williard Lawrence), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mark-married to Harriet Sharp, Bothell, Wash.; Gary-married to Audrey Frey, Yakima, Wash.; and Donald-who married Donna Knudson, Federal Way, Wash. After their marriage, Bud served a seven-year apprenticeship in embalming and funeral directing. They moved to Larchwood in 1938. Bud and Hazel purchased the grocery and meat market from Woodrow Grotewold and started "Masters' Food Market" in the building presently occupied by the Post Office. In 1950 they built a new store building in their present location. MCENANEY, DR. JAMES B. was born in 1848 in Ireland and immigrated to America with his parents in 1850, settling in Cleveland, Ohio. He married May Hough, a native of Iowa. To this union five children were born-Fred, Grace, Jessie and William (all deceased); and Florence (Mrs. Fred Dickey), in Detroit, Mich. In 1875 James attended medical school and after graduating, he practiced in Waucoma and Festina, Iowa. In 1892 he came to Ashton, Iowa, moving to Larchwood in 1901, where he practiced medicine for many years. May passed away in 1925 and James in 1935. MCGILVRA, LEROY was born February 16, 1852 in Lake County, Ill. He married Jane Shannon in November of 1875, at Nashua, Iowa. She was born October 14, 1855. To this union eight children were born, Cora, Mina, Laura, Mabelle, Robert, Roy and Marie (all deceased); and Manilla (Mrs. Arno Hoeck) of Inglewood, Calif. The family came to Larchwood in 1893, where LeRoy engaged in the real estate and insurance business. LeRoy passed away May 31, 1910 and Jane Died on October 26, 1934. MCGUIRE, RICHARD JOSEPH (Dick) was born at Clinton, Iowa, on January 18, 1866. On January 7, 1891, at Holstein, Iowa, he was united in marriage to Maria Kehoe, who was born January 30, 1872. The year after their marriage they moved to Larchwood. The couple had five daughters, Agnes and Irene (both deceased); Esther (Mrs. William Hughes), Howard, S.D.; Leona (Powers-Mrs. Russell Wyant), Larchwood; and Frances (Mrs. Joe Hevern), Rock Valley, Iowa. The McGuires operated the restaurant and livery barn in Larchwood before moving to a farm south of town in 1900. They were charter members of St. Mary's Church. Dick passed away December 3, 1938 and Maria on June 30, 1964, at the age of 92. MCKENNA, ANDREW was born in 1865 in Page County, Ill. In 1883 at Keystone, Iowa, Andrew married Bridget Smith, who was born May 18, 1859, in Bloomingburgh, N.Y. They were the parents of nine children, Kathryn, Clara, Edward, and Thomas (all deceased); Mae, Cushing, Iowa.; John, Kansas City, Mo.; Alice, Anna, and Malvina, all of Colorado Springs, Colo. The Andrew McKenna family lived in Cherokee and Alvord, Iowa, before settling at Larchwood in 1890. Both Andrew and Bridget passed away in 1904. MCMONAGLE, CHARLES HENRY was born August 18, 1889, at Litchfield, Minn. In 1912 at Sioux Falls, S.D., Charles married Yohanna Nielson, who was born December 24, 1889, in Denmark. They were the parents of Charles (deceased); Pearl (Mrs. LeRoy Grotewold), Larchwood; Gene, married to Inez Caulfield, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Amber (Quist-Ruud), Worthing, S.D. In 1922 the McMonagles opened a restaurant in Larchwood, which was one of the three business places burned out on January 28, 1925. The next day they opened for business across the street and later bought the Gerner building for their restaurant. In 1950 they moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., where they opened a grocery store. Yohanna passed away January 6, 1963, and Charles on February 15, 1963. MCMULLEN, MERRIT C. was born in Orange County, N.Y., in 1858. He came to Rock Valley, Iowa, in 1884 and to Larchwood in 1888. In 1892 he married Lucy Moir, who was born in Canada. They were the parents of Jessie, Alley, Dewey, Ivy, Pearl and Lloyd. The McMullens lived on a farm adjoining Larchwood. He had it platted in 1903 and called it McMullen's addition to the village of Larchwood. They later lived in Logan township, with Merrit being, at one time, the proprietor of 1,280 acres. Merrit was county supervisor from 1898 until 1905. Upon leaving Larchwood, the McMullens moved to Sioux City, Iowa. MIDDLEN, MAX was born August 8, 1892 at Highland, Wisc., and Anna Hohman on November 19, 1895, in Benton County, Iowa. They were married at Larchwood, March 2, 1914. The Middlens had four children, Dale and Orlan (both deceased); Joel, married to Adeline Swenson, and Doris (Mrs. Orlo Koch), both of Larchwood. Orlan lost his wife in World War II. Max was a member of the R.E.A. board in Lyon County. He passed away September 1, 1969, and Anna on September 30, 1969. MILLER, FRANK married Catherine Reilly on March 7, 1916. Catherine was born July 14, 1893. The couple had four children, Mary (deceased); Ambrose of San Francisco, Calif.; Timothy, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Theresa (Schuller), Santa Clara, Calif. Catherine taught rural school for six years before her marriage. She is now in a rest home in Sunnyvale, Calif. MUND, FRANK was born at Hamburg, Germany, on March 9, 1886, and came to the United States in 1891. On March 27, 1917, he married Esther Zangger, who was born May 1, 1896, at Marcus, Iowa. They had three children, Evelyn (Mrs. Melvin Orth), Lidgerwood, N.D.; Kenneth-married to Alice Ritter, and Marvin, who married Delores Christianson, both of Milnor, N.D. As a boy Frank did many odd jobs, such as turning the ice cream freezer at the local cafe for a dish of ice cream. He also drove the horse on a horsepower that turned the sausage and meat grinder for Chris Grotewold's meat market. Esther passed away April 23, 1962. Frank now is living at Milnor, N.D., and was married on August 17, 1963 to Ruth M. Dahl. MUND, HERMAN was born in 1879 and married Jennie Haggardt in April of 1904, at Larchwood. Jennie was born February 4, 1879. They were the parents of two children, Vera (Mrs. Berger Jacobson), Bremerton, Wash., and Vernon, who married Alice Maxwell, Seattle, Wash. Herman taught in the Warner school and also worked in the Larchwood Leader print shop. He then worked in the bank under Shade and Peacock for a number of years and later became associated with the Haggardt's General Merchandise store until the family moved to Idaho in 1910. Herman passed away in October of 1928 and Jennie on December 22, 1964. MUND, JOHN was born May 21, 1850. His wife, Magdalena Siefke, was born September 4, 1850. They were united in marriage in 1876 and were the parents of six children, Herman, Hattie, Otto, Paul and Gretchen (all deceased); and Frank, who married Esther Zanger, Milnor, N.D. The family came to the United States from Germany in 1891 and settled at Remsen, Iowa. In 1892 they moved to Larchwood, where John was a carpenter and also farmed for a time. John passed away August 11, 1902 and Magdalena on April 22, 1936. MURPHY, MARTIN (Bud) was born at Cosgrove, Iowa, on December 30, 1883. He moved to Larchwood in 1908 where he taught school for two years. Mary Elizabeth (Mae) Ryan was born at Marcus, Iowa, on March 5, 1889. She also moved to Larchwood in 1908 and taught school near the Henry Bruggeman farm. Bud and Mae were married at Marcus, Iowa., November 11, 1910. They had six children, Lucille, Tucson, Ariz.; Leola (Mrs. Joe Paa), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Lorraine (Mrs. Maher), Santa Barbera, Calif.; Patricia (Mrs. Don Blood), Fremont, Calif.; Maurice, married to Joan Weidekamp, Rockville, Center, N.Y.; and Dr. Paul, who married LaRoda Giedler, Wichita, Kansas. They opened and operated "Bud's Cafe" in Larchwood in 1916. He also carried mail until 1940, when they moved to George, Iowa, where he continued to carry the mail. Martin passed away December 1, 1953 and Mae on June 12, 1971 NAUGLE, HENRY was born in Somerset County, Pa., on September 19, 1839, and was reared on the farm. He worked at Hillsboro, Pa., making barrel staves. Henry served two enlistments in the Civil War. In 1843 he married Amanda Glaus, who was born November 17, 1843. They had four children, Mary, Minerva, Ella, and Joseph Harvey (all deceased). The Naugles went west in 1876 and lived in Marshall County, Iowa, for 16 years before purchasing a 160-acre farm in Lyon County, where they lived until their deaths. Amanda died February 11, 1915, and Henry on October 13, 1922. NAUGLE, JOSEPH HARVEY, son of Henry and Amanda Naugle, was born February 14, 1881, in Iowa. In 1906 he married Jessie Emeline McEnaney, who was born July 1, 1885. They were the parents of five children, Laura Mae (Mrs. Wayne Wullem) and Merle-married to Garnet Naive, both of Emmetsburg, Iowa; Bonnie (Mrs. Nathan Gahagen), Austin, Minnj.; Larry, who married Anne Vainreb, and who was captured and held in a German prison for one of the four years that he was in the army; and Edwin, who married Virginia Edwards, Hyattsville, Md. Edwin served one enlistment in the army and one in the navy and was on the "Oklahoma" when it went down at Pearl Harbor. Harvey farmed for a while for his father, and then he moved to Larchwood, where he owned and operated a garage and service station. Jessie passed away December 4, 1953, and Harvey on November 29, 1962. NEWBORG, SAM married Nellie Olson in October of 1898. Both from Norway, Sam was born in 1871 and Nellie in 1873. They were the parents of one daughter, Viola (Magerstaedt), who lives in St. Louis, Mo. The Newborgs lived on a farm south of town for many years and then moved to Quinn, S.D. for a time. They came back to Larchwood, where he was Marshall for about 15 years. Nellie passed away in 1914 and Sam in December of 1958. OEHMKE, EDWARD and Anna Groth were married December 22, 1910 at Larchwood. Anna was born October 6, 1892, at Keystone, Iowa; and Edward was born September 1, 1881, at Penfield, Ill. To this union were born three children, Louise (Mrs. Art Schnepf), Sibley, Iowa; Edward J., married to Catherine Roach, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Martin, who married Ruby Cooper, National City, Calif. PARKINSON, JOHN WILLIAM married Angie Cheesman in October of 1897 at Sioux Falls, S.D. John was born August 7, 1874, and Angie was born on April 16, 1877, at Winona, Minn. They had one son, William Willard (deceased). The family moved to a farm near Larchwood, which was part of the O.M. Parkinson Ranch. The house on this farm was built in East Sioux Falls, S.D., by the Close Brothers and moved by a team of horses to the farm which is now occupied by Mrs. Willard (Sylvia) Parkinson. On July 25, 1901, John was struck by lightning and killed while cutting grain. After his death, Angie and their son, Willard, went to live with Angie's mother, Mrs. Bothwell, in Larchwood, and rented out the Parkinson farm. Angie passed away January 22, 1866. PARKINSON, WILLIAM WILLARD was born in Sioux Falls, S.D. on December 20, 1898. He married Sylvia Ann Wilka on June 12, 1918, in Luverne, Minn. She was born August 23, 1898. They became the parents of 11 children, Robert (deceased); Genevieve (Mrs. C.B. DeWald), Hawthorne, Calif.; Myrtle (Marquez) and Evelyn (Mrs. John Nunez), both of Los Angeles, Calif.; Lawrence-who married Ella Mae Jacobsma, San Dimas, Calif.; Judy (Mrs. Dave Peters) and Joyce (Mrs. Nat Peters), both of Louisville, Ky.; Marguerite (Mrs. Leroy Wynia), Milwaukee, Wisc.; Marvin, married to Bulah Miller, Arnold, and Earl, all of Larchwood. After their marriage Willard and Sylvia lived on the Parkinson farm northwest of Larchwood where Sylvia still resides. Sylvia has received an award for 15 years of 4-H leadership. The Parkinsons celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1968. Willard, having lived on the same farm all his life, passed away September 7, 1970. PARKS, WALTER M. was born in Blue Earth County, Minnesota, near Amboy on August 23, 1875, and attended high school and normal school at Mankato, Minnesota. In 1900 he came to Lyon County and on June 17, 1903, he married Clara E. Barnes of George, Iowa. She was born March 1, 1884. Walter and Clara were the parents of 11 children, John, Clarence, and Lester (all deceased); Edna (Mrs. Joe Zimmitsch), Alice (Mrs. Worth Keller), and Clarice (Mrs. Robert Wright), all of Des Moines, Iowa; Irene (Mrs. Louis Bylsma), Sheldon, Iowa; Alta Mae (Mrs. Douglas Patterson), Silver Springs, Maryland; Iona (Mrs. Dean Williams), and Eleanor (Mrs. Milton Rockhill), both of Larchwood) and Ivan of South Wayne, Wisconsin. Clara passed away on March 1, 1923. Walter married Marybelle McKnight July 2, 1927. He taught school at George, Lester, Alvord and Larchwood, Iowa, and was a charter member of the Community Church, now the United Church of Christ, at Larchwood. Marybelle died on December 29, 1943, and Walter passed away October 24, 1951. PEACOCK, JAMES HERBERT was born in Manchester, England, on July 21, 1871. He came to the United States and Larchwood in 1889; his first home was on the Redfield Ranch northwest of town, which he later owned. On May 9, 1900, he married Minerva Snider, who was born in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, and came to Sanborn, Ia., when she was 11 yers old. Minerva and James were the parents of three children, Pauline (Mrs. James T. Little, Sr.), Greenville, N.C.; Marjorie (Mrs. Edwin H. Bryant), Cape Cod, Mass.; and J. Warren, who married Mitzie Baust, Fulton, Ill. Minerva came to Larchwood as a secretary in the bank from Independence, Iowa, where she had served as secretary to the late Herbert Hoover. James entered the banking business in Larchwood in 1891, under the direction of Charles Shade, where he served as a bookkeeper and was promoted to vice-president and manager and then to president of the Savings Bank of Larchwood. In 1928 the Peacocks moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa, where James continued in the banking business. In 1935 he was named secretary-treasurer of the First Federal Savings and Loan Association, which position he held until his death on August 3, 1949. Minerva preceded him in death in February of 1949. PERKINSON, HENRY and Mayme Hughes were married at Larchwood on July 7, 1909. Henry was born July 25, 1885 and Mayme on April 15, 1885. They were the parents of three children, Marcella (Mrs. E. C. Lyon), Santa Maria, CA; Mildred (Mrs. Peter Clercx) Larchwood; and Regis, who married Bonnie Dunn, Victorville, CA. Mayme taught country school and after their marriage they farmed in the Larchwood vicinity all of their lives. Henry passed away August 5, 1960, and Mayme on August 30, 1963. PERKINSON, JAMES was born April 10, 1884, at Beloit, IA and Nellie Schat, born OCt. 16, 1894 at Orange City, IA were married Sept. 27, 1915, at St. Mary's church in Larchwood. The children born to this union were, Margaret, James jr. and infant son (all deceased); Felicitas (Mrs. Ted Underberg), Larchwood; Viola (Mrs. Tim Lape), Valley Springs, SD; Mary (Mrs. Norman Oren), John, married Lorraine Volcek, Florence (Mrs. Howard Hansen), and Robert, married to Loreen Rodel, all of Sioux Falls, SD and Catherine (Mrs. Frank Kadinger), Security, CO. James worked in George Castle's garage, operated a pool hall for many years, and farmed for a number of years in this community. Nellie clerked in the Thompson and Lein General Store. James and Nellie celebrated their golden wedding in 1965. James passed away in March of 1966. Nellie is living in Sioux Falls, SD. at the present time. PERKINSON, JAMES SR. was born in 1854 at Dixon, Ill., his wife, Elizabeth Fitzpatrick was born October 15, 1851, at Irish Valley, Ia. Elizabeth and James were married January 18, 1874. They were the parents of 11 children, Louise, Margaret, Catherine, Agnes, MAry, Ed, Henry, and James (all deceased); Bessie (Jenkins), of California; John, Rowena, SD and Martin, who married Pauline (Polly) Helm, Chicago, IL. The Perkinsons moved to Elm Springs, where James was a mail carrier and worked in the depot. He then managed the elevator and later moved to Fairview, SD and worked in the flour mill. On returning home after doing a day's work in the mill, he would carry a 50-pound sack of flour on his shoulders. In 1905 the Perkinsons moved to a farm west of Larchwood, and then in 1911 he moved into town and bought the pool hall. Elizabeth passed away May 23, 1910, and James on March 11, 1930. PETERSON, CHRISTIAN M. was born November 24, 1885 in Thisted, Denmark; Amelia M. Mengshol was born January 5, 1887, at Hartington, Nebr. They were married on July 19, 1911, and had three children-Helen (Mrs. Theodore Anderson), Berkeley, Calif.; Russel (deceased); and Ruth (Mrs. Walter Stevens), Fort Dodge, Ia. The Petersen family came to Larchwood in October of 1918, where Chris was cashier of the Security Savings Bank of Larchwood until June of 1929. Christian passed away October 10, 1936 and Amelia is living at Hartington, Nebraska. PETERSON, JOHN was born January 21, 1894, at Spencer, Iowa. Inger Christinsen was born in Denmark on August 3, 1894. They were married May 14, 1914, and became the parents of seven children, Charlotte (deceased); Esther (Mrs. Melvin Gunnerson), Sioux Rapids, Iowa; Jeannette (Mrs. Paul Schalinske), Grinnell, Iowa; Morris, who married Grace Wegner, Jesup, Iowa; Ray, married to Wilma Albers, Arthur, who married Margaret Krukow, and Kenneth, married to Dolores Broadfield, all of Spencer, Iowa. John and Inger settled on a farm southwest of Larchwood in 1918. Inger passed away October 26, 1959, and John on July 13, 1969. POLZIN, FRED was born November 17, 1878, in Germany. On July 4, 1904, in Beadle County, S.D., Fred married Martha Scheibe, who was born September 10, 1883, in Benton County, Iowa. To this union 14 children were born, Clyde, Vernon, Verona, Gordon, and Frances (all deceased); Laura (Mrs. Harry Horn), Carl, married to Mary Viereck, and Geraldine (Mrs. Anderson), all of Larchwood; Lavina (Mrs. LeRoy Benson), Lyons, S.D.; Claude-married to Lorraine Lord, Marvin, who married Alma Hendrickson, Marcella (Mrs. Clifford Foss), and Melvin, who married Nina Chenowith, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Kenneth of Hartford, S.D. There are 28 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren. The Polzins farmed southwest of town and retired to Larchwood. Fred passed away November 1, 1956. POLZIN, KARL GUSTAV, son of the Samuel Polzins, was born November 18, 1852, in Germany. On November 10, 1874, Karl married Henrietta Kreger, who was born March 1, 1856, at Enowrozlow, Germany. They were the parents of two sons-Amos and Fred (both deceased). The Polzins came to the United States in 1881 and settled at Garrison, Iowa. In 1893 they moved to a farm southwest of Larchwood, where they made their home, except for about 12 years when they lived in Larchwood. The family were members of the Lutheran Church. Henrietta passed away March 10, 1923, and Karl on December 30, 1939. PRUITT, EDWARD was born April 17, 1881, and his wife, Mary Lynch, on April 9, 1882. They were married May 17, 1903, and became the parents of-Kenneth (deceased); Clifford, married to Mary Woods, Inwood, Iowa; and Gene-who married Louise Weisler, Sioux Falls, S.D. The Pruitts homesteaded in Minot, N.D., farming there until 1920 when they moved to Rowena, S.D., and the north of Sioux Falls, S.D. They farmed there until 1938, when they moved into Sioux Falls. Edward passed away April 30, 1961 and Mary on May 8, 1965. PRUITT, FRANK was born in 1875 and married Belle Halvorson, who was born in 1874. Their children were Mildred and Paul (both deceased), Melvin in California and James in Arizona. Frank passed away in 1943 and Belle in 1952. PRUITT, JAMES J. was born January 6, 1878, at Benton County, Iowa. His wife, Edmo Johnson, was born June 7, 1877, at Grundy County, Iowa. In December of 1902 they were married at Larchwood and became the parents of two daughters, Madelon (Mrs. Oscar Johnson), Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Irene (Mrs. Ed Anderson), Larchwood. James was a former mayor and the postmaster. Edmo passed away August 3, 1947, and James on May 7, 1966. PRUITT, JAMES WESLEY was born January 1, 1865, in Indiana, was married on January 25, 1893 to Tonetta Helen Rulland, who was born July 2, 1875, at Larchwood. They were the parents of three children, Delma (Mrs. Carl Swanson) and Arlie (Mrs. Melvin Burns), both of Rock Rapids, Iowa; and Clayton, married to Ruby Hofstra who is now deceased, Canton, S.D. After their marriage the Pruitts lived on a farm for a few years and then moved into town where they owned a restaurant and later managed a grain elevator. He died September 26, 1926 and she on February 10, 1947. PRUITT, WILLIAM was born January 22, 1842, in Indiana. In 1867 at Buffalo, Indiana, he was married to Emily McKinney, who was born December 28, 1840. Their children were, Martha, Clora, Ascestes, Frank, James J., and Edward (all deceased). In 1873 the Pruitts moved to Benton County, Iowa and to Larchwood in 1889. They farmed south of Larchwood for a short time and then moved into town. Bill was a Civil War Veteran. Emily passed away January 29, 1926 and Bill on June 24, 1937. RABEY, EARNEST JOHN was born in Mechlenburg, Germany, on January 1, 1851. Mary Cady was born on December 8, 1869 in Machias, New York. Earnest and Mary were married in 1890 at Machias and were parents of three children, George (deceased); Stella (Mrs. Jack Logue), Kansas City, Missouri; and Malcolm, who married Hulda Oehmke, Larchwood. After their marriage Earnest and Mary came to Larchwood, where he was a carpenter and a separator operator with a threshing crew. The Rabeys also farmed northwest of town for a time. They had six grandchildren. Mary passed away on September 24, 1915, and Earnest on June 10, 1927. RABEY, MALCOLM married Hulda Oehmke on February 13, 1917. Malcolm was born May 25, 1897; and Hulda was born October 1, 1898. The couple had four children-Leola (Mrs. Joe Clercx), Jasper, Minn.; Wanda (Mrs. Paul Wright), Poway, Calif.; Charles-married to Mildred Harter, Sheffield, Ia.; and Duane-married Betty Crawford, Larchwood. The Rabeys farmed in the Larchwood vicinity for several years, and Malcolm also worked as a carpenter. Hulda passed away January 26, 1958 and Malcolm still resides in Larchwood. REESE, WILLIAM was born December 23, 1898, at Linn Grove, Ia. Marie Ryan was born Septembaer 13, 1899, in Luverne, Minn. They were married May 2, 1925, in Sioux City, Ia.; and to this union three children were born-James of Storm Lake, Ia.; Mary Ann (Bolt), Rochester, Minn.; and Richard of Dunwoody, Ga. There are 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The Reeses came to Larchwood in 1933 and operated a meat market and grocery store. They also had an ice house and did a "whiz-bang" business after church on Sunday morning when families stopped for homemade ice cream. After leaving Larchwood in 1943, Bill was employed by the Federal Department of Agriculture as a meat grader in Storm Lake, Ia., until his death on June 22, 1957. Marie Reese Abel still lives at Storm Lake, Iowa. REILLY, AMBROSE was born January 16, 1899, at Evansville, Wisc. Agnes Clercx was born October 28, 1908, at Larchwood. They were married September 6, 1937, and became the parents of four children-Margaret (Mrs. Larry Christopherson), Jack- who married Mary Bridenstine, and Bob-married to Sharon Bertsch, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Mary Lynn of Larchwood. There are nine grandchildren. The Reilly home has always been in Larchwood. Besides working at various jobs in Larchwood, Ambrose was employed by the county on road maintenance, for 16 years. Ambrose passed away September 13, 1965. REILLY, BERNARD was born October 12, 1882, and came to Larchwood in 1906. He and his sister, Catherine, started farming in 1910. Bernard served in the army during World War I and after his return on April 11, 1923, married Marie O'Meara of Alvord. She was born in May of 1894. To this couple were born six children- Earl (deceased); James, Fort Meade, S.D.; Mary-Sister Loman and Sister Marcella, both of Winona, Minn.; Matthew, Huron, S.D.; and Rose of Rapid City, S.D. There are 25 grandchildren. Bernard is in a nursing home in Huron, S.D., and Marie passed away December 30, 1968. REILLY, MARK was born March 30, 1901, in Wisconsin, and on May 25, 1927, married Mary Kelly, who was born March 20, 1906, at Larchwood. They were the parents of nine children-Hugh of San Jose, Calif.; Ervin, Canton, S.D.; Connie, Peoria, Ill.; Terrance, Colleen and Rosemary, all of Cedar Rapids, Ia.; Robert and Sharon, both of Denver, Colo.; and Ronald of Dubuque, Iowa. The Mark Reilly family farmed near Larchwood before moving to Van Horne, Ia.; in 1933. Mark passed away April 17, 1968. REILLY, PATRICK married Mary Ann Nichols on November 4, 1879. Patrick was born April 12, 1854, and Mary Ann on March 26, 1859. Ten children were born tothis couple-John, Ambrose, Mark, Joe, Mary, Elizabeth and William (all deceased); Bernard-married to Marie O'Meara, Huron, S.D.; Catherine (Mrs. Frank Miller), Sunnyvale, Calif.; and Anastatia (Mrs. Thomas Walsh) of Larchwood. The Reillys came to a farm west of Larchwood in 1911 from Evansville, Wisc. After Patricks death on January 5, 1928 Mary lived with her daughter, Anastatia, until she was 96 years old. She passed away February 13, 1953. REINKE, FRANK son of Anna and John Reinke, was born June 2, 1893. He married Bernice Middlen September 29, 1928. She was born July 30, 1897. The Reinkes are the parents of two children-Helen (deceased) and Robert-who married Albena Sparks, Larchwood. Frank and Bernice moved from South Dakota to the Larchwood area where they farmed west of town. They are now retired and live in Larchwood. REINKE, JOHN M. was born May 24, 1870, in Benton County, Iowa and married Anna E. Mohr at Dysart, Iowa. She was born July 30, 1872, at Dysart, Iowa. Four children were born to this union-Pear (deceased); Frank-who married Bernice Middlen, Larchwood; Ray, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Mabel (Mrs. Arthur Kelly), George, Iowa. In March of 1894 the Reinkes came to Larchwood and located in Larchwood Township northeast of town. They moved to a farm east of town in 1903 and lived there until John's death on May 25, 1925. Anna passed away April 19, 1960. REINKE, LESTER C., son of William and Catherine Reinke, was born March 16, 1896. On September 27, 1922 he married Sophia Clercx, who was born March 15, 1898. Their children are-Josephine (Mrs. Lowell Summa) and Paul-married to Constance McCarty, both of Larchwood. The Reinkes farmed in the Larchwood area until Les passed away on September 12, 1967. Sophia lives in the Country View Apartments in Larchwood. REINKE, WILLIAM was born in Germany in 1864; his wife, Katherine Heineman, was born in 1867 at Dysart, Ia. They were married in 1887 at Vinton, Ia., and had five sons-Arthur, Edward, Charles, Clifford and Lester (all deceased). The Reinkes were early settlers in Larchwood, coming to this community in 1890. They purchased land in Larchwood Township, which is still owned by a granddaughter, Kathryn Cituk. William passed away August 24, 1945 and Katherine on March 3, 1948. RIPPERDA, CLARENCE was born at Larchwood on June 29, 1896, to Frank and Elizabeth Ripperda. He entered the service during World War I. On March 29, 1921, he married Ann Clercx, who was the daughter of Leo and Sophia Clercx. She was born March 1, 1901. Clarence and Ann had four children-Dorothy and Clarice Ann (both deceased); Rita (Mrs. Robert Lewis) and Joan (Mrs. Lyle Grotewold), both of Larchwood. There are nine grandchildren. Except for six years in South Dakota, the Ripperdas farmed in the Larchwood area. They moved into town in 1945 where he worked as a carpenter and was a substitute mail carrier for years. Clarence passed away May 6, 1967. RIPPERDA, FRANK WAS born in 1867 in Jamestown, Wisc., was united in marriage to Elizabeth Hoffman in Sinsinawa, Wisc., on January 20, 1893. She was born October 24, 1864. The couple had seven children-Walter, Clarence, Irenaeus, Lorena and George (all deceased); Joseph--ho married Gladys Kramer, and Leona (Higgins) of Rock Valley, Ia. Frank and Elizabeth bought a farm southeast of Larchwood in 1893, where they lived until his death in 1935. Elizabeth and her son, Walter, retired and moved into Larchwood, where they lived for about 15 years. She then went to a retirement home for a number of years. When she was 91, she was given her first plane ride by her grandson, Francis Ripperda, who is a pilot. She died October 10, 1964, shortly before her 99th birthday. RIPPERDA, IRENAEUS was born June 10, 1904, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Ripperda. Gertrude Mary Daniels was born April 7, 1910. They were married on January 26, 1932. The Ripperdas had seven children-Paul (deceased); Raymond-who married Linda Dahl, Luverne, Minn.; Donald-married to Janet Hansen, Gerald- married to Theresa Roemen, John-who married Judy Christensen, Rosemary (Mrs. Donald Bruggeman), and Mark-who married Diane Lewis, all of Larchwood. Irenaeus lived his entire life on the same farm southeast of Larchwood. He died December 3, 1959, and Gertrude on September 10, 1971. ROCKHILL, MILTON W. was born December 21, 1914, at Larchwood; and Eleanor Parks was born August 11, 1914, at Alvord, Iowa The couple was married June 25, 1936. They have 10 children - Gail, Jane, Owen, Ronald, Constance, Milton Wendell jr., Rex, Randall, Gary, and Lori. They are farmers, living on the same farm on which Milton was born. The couple are members of the United Church of Christ. ROCKHILL, OSCAR was born of Quaker parentage on July 7, 1868, in Hardin county, Iowa. Hulda Bahnson was born on August 7, 1874, in Centennial township. They were married on July 7, 1892, and were the parents of six children - Ellis, Leslie who marreid Ruth Freeman, and Milton - married to Eleanor Parks both of Larchwood, Robert maried to Velda Fox, Marshalltown, Iowa, Mabel of Nevada, Iowa; and Rozetta (Mrs Howard Reyman), Pinole, California. Oscar came to Larchwood in 1889 and taught school for several years. The Rockhills lived on various farms and in 1897 purchased a farm just south of town where Milton now lives. Oscar's later years were spent in raising and hybridizing small fruits. Hulda passed away October 5, 1953; and Oscar died September 30, 1969, at the age of 101 years. ROEMEN, DONALD A. was born July 31, 1921, at Larchwood. He married Helen Theresa Scholten on June 4, 1945, at St. Mary's Church in Larchwood. Helen was born June 15, 1925, at Larchwood. To this union 11 children were born-Rose Marie (Mrs. Daniel Conway;), Rapid City, S.D.; Kathleen (Mrs. David Lieferman) and Eileen, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Keith, Sioux City, Ia.; Elaine, Boone, Ia.; Lawrence, Patty, Guy, Joel, Bruce, and Tim, all at home. The Donald Roemen family lived one half mile north of Larchwood for 14 years. In 1961 they purchased and moved to the home place southwest of town. ROEMEN, EDWARD and Amelia Wulf were married April 12, 1947, at Larchwood. Edward was born August 7, 1923, at Larchwood and Amelia on January 9, 1923. They have 12 children-Marlene (Mrs. Frank Tullar), Sac City, Ia.; Marvin-married to Joyce Benson and living at Ottumwa, Ia.; Ella of Canton, S.D.; and Leonard, Dean, Ray, David, Glenn, Sheila, Terry, Leslie and Nettie, all at home. They have one grandson. Edward worked for his father the first two years of his married life. They then moved to a farm one-mile west of Larchwood, where they now reside. ROEMEN, FRANK, son of Hubert and Helena Roemen, was born January 10, 1892, at Larchwood. On April 20, 1915, he married Marie Robbin, who was born February 24, 1894, in Eltern, Germany, and came to America in October of 1913. The couple were the parents of nine children-Agnes, Leonard, and Arnold (all deceased); Herbert-who married Engelbertha Rustman, and Donald-married to Helen Scholten, both of Larchwood; Henry-married to Joan Duckworth, Omaha, Nebr.; Elfrieda (Mrs. Jack Newsome), Savannah, Ga.; Ervin-who married Marie Fritz, Dell Rapids, S.D.; and LaVerna (Mrs. James Herbert), Sioux Falls, S.D. There are 43 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. After their marriage Frank and Marie lived on a farm southwest of Larchwood. While farming Frank was also engaged in the livestock and grain trucking business. In 1954 they retired and built a new home in Larchwood, where Marie still resides. Frank passed away August 20, 1958. ROEMEN, HERBERT B. was born February 26, 1917, at Larchwood, and married Engelbertha V. Rustman on January 28, 1941, at St. Mary's Church. She was born May 25, 1919. Their children are-Constance (Mrs. Glenn Michel), Dell Rapids, S.D.; Rita (Mrs. Dale Snyder), Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Pauline (Mrs. Kenneth McEntee), Mitchell, S.D. Herb is employed by Long & Hanson Commission Company. He served on the city council for several years. The Roemens have 12 grandchildren. ROEMEN, HUBERT was born June 1, 1861, in the Netherlands, and married Helena Betting at Breda, Ia., on Feabruary 3, 1890. Helena was born February 15, 1873, in Hanover, Germany. They were the parents of seven children-Frank, John, and Leonard (all deceased); Michael-who married Catherine Nicolai, Canton, S.D.; Mary (Mrs. Ed DeSmet), Rock Valley, Ia.; William-who married Edna Hamann, and Catherine (Mrs. William Bruggeman,) both of Larchwood. Through Hubert's acquaintance with Mr. Sykes, he purchased a handmade gun with Mr. Sykes' name engraved on the barrel. This gun is still retained in the family. Hubert was engaged in farming and livestock feeding southwest of town. Their grandson, Robert Bruggeman, now lives on this farm. Helena was the first woman to vote in Centennial Township. Hubert passed away June 7, 1950, and Helena on December 8, 1954. ROEMEN, JOHN H. was born June 9, 1895 at Larchwood. Nettie Sehr was born June 11, 1894 at Alvord, Ia. They were married February 13, 1917, at Alvord, Ia, and were parents of 5 children-Dolores (Mrs. George Lens), Anna (Mrs. Andrew Underberg), Mary (Mrs. Leonard Underberg), and Edward-who married Amelia Wulf, all of Larchwood; and Edna (Mrs. Ray Hennings) of Sioux Falls, S.D. He was a farmer and stockman and for several years lived west of Larchwood. They celebrated their golden anniversary with their children, 31 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. John passed away June 15, 1969, and Nettie on May 15, 1970. ROEMEN, WILLIAM H. was born June 15, 1903, on a farm northwest of Larchwood. He is the son of Hubert and Helena Roemen. On August 20, 1929, bill married Edna Hamann of Inwood, Ia. She was born April 11, 1906. They became the parents of five daughters-Glorianne (Mrs. Donald Reiter), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Allene (Mrs. Albert Schrader), Schleswig, Ia.; Rosalie (Mrs. Michael Bulkley), Baltimore, Md.; Carol (Mrs. Clarence Rutten), LeMars, Ia.; and Mary Lynn (Mrs. Steven King), Garden Grove, Calif. The family moved to their farm northeast of Larchwood in March of 1941, where they lived until March of 1966 when they built a new home in the east part of Larchwood. Bill was an insurance agent from 1958 to 1971. He is president of the Larchwood Optimist Club. The Roemens have nine grandchildren. ROHWEDER, CLAUS HENRY was born in Hamburg, Germany, on September 12, 1889. He came to the United States as a young man and settled in Lyon County. Claus worked as a farmhand for four yeqrs and then began farming for himself. He married Bertha Lizzie Kahl on February 18, 1918, at Rock Rapids, Ia. They are the parents of two daughters-Luella (Mrs. Harold Vosburg), Larchwood, and Viola (Mrs. Bryan Lambert, Jr.) of Arvada, Colorado. In 1925 the Rohweders moved to Larchwood. Bertha passed away January 15, 1943, Claus retired in 1946 and lives in Sioux Falls, S.D. RUDLOFF, FERDINAND and his wife, Christina, were married in Germany and came to America soon afterward. Christina was born in 1863 and Ferdinand in 1854. They were parents of seven children-Anna (Mrs. Claus Reyelts), Clara (Mrs. Lafe Smith), Hulda (Mrs. George Fagan), Lyda (Mrs. Claude Martin), Ida (Mrs. Irving Wightman), Emil-who married Grace Barret and Ella, who married Rev.Edwin Arends (all deceased). The Rudloff family lived at Hull and George, Ia., before coming to Larchwood, where Ferdinand purchased the lumberyard and built several houses in Larchwood. Christina and Ferdinand later moved to Pasadena, Calif. Both were killed in 1919 in a car-train accident while driving to San Diego to view the entry of the naval fleet returning to the United States after the end of World War I. RULLAND, PEDER (PETER) M. was born February 19, 1851, in Norway. Sigri (Sarah) Helgerson was born April 4, 1849, in Rock County, Wisc. They were the parents of three daughters-Anna Marie, Maggie and Tonetta (all deceased;). The Rulland family came to Lyon County from Wisconsin. They purchased and farmed land east of Larchwood. It was on this land that the Englishmen had a racetrack, which they used for their horse races. These races were famous, drawing large crowds from neighboring towns and people from the east who came by train to attend the races. Polo games were also played on this farm land. Sigri spent much of her time baking pies and doughnuts to serve with warm milk fresh from the cows to the Englishmen who gathered in the Rulland home before and after the races. In 1877 Peter was elected as the fourth auditor of Lyon County. Peter passed away on January 18, 1886, and Sigri on October 1, 1902. RUSTMAN, CORNELIUS E., the son of Cornelius and Cornelia Rustman, was born April 12, 1892, in Haarlem, Netherlands, and came to America in 1912. On February 14, 1917, at Holy Name Catholic Church at Rock Rapids, Ia., Cornelius married Cornelia (Nellie) Tille, daughter of John and Cornelia Tille. She was born March 1, 1897, at Alvord, Ia. They were the parents of two children-Cornelia (Mrs. George Blanchard), Buelton, Calif., and Engelbertha (Mrs. Herbert Roemen), of Larchwood. There are eight grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Before his marriage Cornelius worked on various farms, including the Henry Bruggeman's. He spent some time in California and later worked for Theodore and Ingel Tille of Rock Rapids, Ia., in the tilling and ditching business. The Rustmans lived on a farm southwest of Larchwood, which is now owned by Andy Grotewold. They farmed with Jacob Bontje until Cornelius' death on December 25, 1918. Nellie Rustman Scholten now lives in Larchwood. RUTTEN, JOHANNES R. was born August 8, 1854, and Maria Gertrude Clercx was born in 1868. Both came to the United States from Beegden, Holland, in 1872. In 1889 they came to Lyon County, were married here at Larchwood, and began farming south of town. The couple had five children-Nellie (Mrs. Herman Freissen) in Holland; Maggie (sister Lois), Clinton, Ia.; Ann (Mrs. Henry Schwartz), Murdo, S.D.; Leo-who married Elizabeth Underberg, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Mary (Sister Anselma) deceased. Johannes passed away May 2, 1904, and Maria in August of 1955. SAUERS, STEPHEN was born September 30, 1859, at Biren, Germany. Rose Giesler was born November 8, 1863, at Baden, Germany. The couple was married at Pittsburgh, Pa., on October 8, 1883. To this union 14 children were born,-Anna, Edward, William, Joseph, Mary, Catherine, and George (all deceased); Sophia (Mrs. Leo Friessen), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Helen (Mrs. Valerian Kramer), Cresco, Ia.; Agnes (Mrs. William Schonhoff), Milnor, N.D.; Alice (Mrs. William Evans), Redondo Beach, Calif.; John-who married Agnes Aurip, and Rose (Mrs. Ben Backe), both of Larchwood; and Clarence-who married Rosella Harrig, Buena Park, Calif. Stephen came to America in 1881 and Rose in 1882. After their marriage they lived at Pittsburgh, Pa., for seven years. They then moved to farms near Doon and Lester, Ia., before coming to Larchwood, where they lived on a farm northwest of town until their deaths. Stephen passed away November 7, 1940 and Rose on November 30, 1941. SCHAFF, FRANK was born July 29, 1897, at Dempster, S.D., and Alice Bell, born July 25, 1904, at Kingsley, Iowa, were married at Watertown, S.D., on March 11, 1926. The couple have six children-Vivian (Mrs. Ernest Klaschen), Wolsey, S.D.; Merie-who married Lavonne Griese, Long Island, N.Y.; Shirley (Mrs. Dale Fortin), El Centro, Calif.; Dale-married to Donna Buus, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Darwin-who married Mary Ann Lens, Larchwood; and Dianne (Mrs. Ronald Laffitte), Bossier City, La. Frank is a World War I Veteran. They farmed for many years, retiring and moving to Larchwood in 1956. SCHETTLER, FRANK was born June 15, 1874, at Breda, Iowa, and Mary Schreurs, born September 12, 1885, in Holland, were married April 19, 1904, at St. Mary's church in Larchwood. They were the parents of 11 children,-Imelda and Darlene (both deceased); Margaret (Mrs. Al DeSmet), Emma (Mrs. Ted DeSmet), Bertha (Mrs. Paul Kramer), Leo-married to Edna Borman; Francis-married to Dorothy Scholten, and Alvin-who married Verena Heinemann Anderson, all of Larchwood; Martin- married to Theresa Scholten, Sherman, S.D.; Loretta (Mrs. John Roemen) and Clara (Mrs. Bill George), both of Rock Rapids, Ia. The Schettlers lived at Wilmont, Minn., until 1911 when they moved to a farm east of Larchwood. They resided there until they retired in 1946 and moved into Larchwood. Frank passed away June 29, 1968, and Mary on March 22, 1971. SCHIPPER, ULFERT R. was born March 7, 1866, in Gremsene, Germany, and came to America at the age of 17 to settle in Grundy County, Ia. Tillie Flessner was born September 1, 1873, in Emnden, Germany, and came with her parents to America, settling at Steamboat Rock, Ia. On October 24, 1890, Ulfert and Tillie were married and became the parents of six children-John, Henry, and a baby (all deceased); Jake-who married Magdelena Hartman, Sioux Falls; Ia.; and Grace (Mrs. Ben Slieter), Hills, Minn. After their marriage Ulfert and Tillie farmed at Steen, Minn., and lived there until 1900, when they moved to Ben Clare, S.D. In 1921 they moved to Larchwood and lived there until Ulfert's death on November 17, 1931. Tillie moved to Rock Rapids in 1948 and lived there until her death on April 11, 1953. SCHMIDT, ALBERT was born May 15, 191, the son of Hans and Minnie Schmidt of Larchwood. Alpha Brynjulson was born June 18, 1892, at Canton, S.D. They were married March 24, 1915; and four sons were born to this union-Kenzy and Wayne (both deceased); Dallas-who married Wilda Dott, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Francis- married to Lois Jensen, Aurora, S.D. While in the service Kenzy served in Africa, Dallas (Bud) in Italy, and Francis was captured in the "Battle of the Bulge." The Schmidts farmed in this vicinity on the Schmidt home place for 17 years and then moved to town and operated a cafe for ten years. Albert passed away April 20, 1958; and Alpha still lives in Larchwood. SCHOENFELDER, JOSEPH, P. was born May 14, 1858, at Muenchweile, Bavaria, Germany. He came to America at the age of 18 and settled at Clinton, Iowa. Mary Elizabeth Otto was born May 5, 1878. They were married October 28, 1901, at St. Mary's Church. To this union were born two children-John, married to Pearl Hushak, Clutier, Iowa, and Laura (Mrs. Laurence Grotewold), Larchwood. Before moving to Larchwood in 1900, Joseph operated a harness shop at Marcus, Iowa. Upon coming to Larchwood, he purchased and operated a shoe repair service and harness shop. Joseph worked at this trade for over 60 years. He was on the Town Council at the time City Hall was built. Joseph died November 30, 1934, and Mary on January 9, 1970. She lived to be 91 years old. SCHMIDT, HANS was born at Ude Buhl, Germany, on October 5,1861. He came to America at an early age, landing in New York and going to Beloit, Iowa. Hans married Minnie Bahnson at her parent's homestead in Centennial Township on April 11, 1883. Minnie was born March 14, 1865, on the Island of Fihr, Denmark. To this union 12 children were born-Bertha, Dorothea, Marie, Albert, William Leroy, Benjamin, Earl (Pete), Irving (Steve), and Harry (all deceased); Alda (Mrs. Ted Herman), Hills, Minn.; Minnie (Getman), Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Harlan of Canton, S.D. Most of Hans and Minnie's married life was spent on a farm four miles west of Larchwood. Hans passed away March 5, 1922, and Minnie on June 18, 1939. SCHOLTEN, GERALD was born February 10, 1918, and Donna Gacke, born July 4, 1923, at Alvord, Iowa, were united in marriage at Sibley, Iowa, on December 29, 1945. They are the parents of-Diane, Sioux City, Iowa; Jim, Mason City, Iowa; Bill, Ronald and Gary, all at home. Gerard and Donna farmed in the Larchwood community until 1956, when they moved into Larchwood and Gerard became manager of the Farmers Co-operative Elevator of Larchwood. SCHOLTEN, JOHN who was born March 25, 1897, married Alieda M. Lens on February 10, 1925, at Larchwood. There are eight daughters and seven sons in the Scholten family,-Theresa (Mrs. Martin Schettler), Garretson, S.D.; Irene (Mrs. Joseph Soldatke), Joseph-married to Eleanor Crawford, Cletus-married to Shirley Pederson, Betty (Mrs. Louis Wall), and Rose Marie (Mrs. Dale Carman), all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mary Lou (Mrs. Charles Kearney), Primghar, Iowa; Veronica (Mrs. Richard Tuschen), Salem, S.D.; George-who married Donna Woolsey, Luverne, Minn; John, Jr.-married to Dorothy Koerlin, Dell Rapids, S.D.; Dorothy (Mrs. Francis Schettler); Anna (Mrs. Ray Burkard), Raymond-married to Sharon Ordal, Paul-married to Arliss Powers, and Lawrence-who married Sandra Hollingshead, all of Larchwood vicinity for 37 years. John and Alieda retired to *Rock Valley, Iowa.* On January 28, 1913, he married Anna Kerkvliet, who was born March 6, 1891. To this union six children were born-Gerard John and Gerard Joseph, who both died in infancy; Daniel, Yankton, S.D.; Gerard-married to Donna Gacke, and Joseph-who married Veronica Snyders, both of Larchwood; and Patronella (Mrs. Lemke), Sioux Falls, S.D. Anna and Peter started farming near Lester, Iowa. Later they moved to a farm northwest of Larchwood, which is now owned by William Kerkvliet. Anna passed away April 7, 1922. Peter married Cornelia (Nellie) Tillie Rustman on April 4, 1923. She was a widow with two daughters-Cora (Mrs. George Blanchard), Buelton, Calif., and Engelbertha (Mrs. Herbert Roemen) of Larchwood. Born to this union were seven children-Mary Frances (Mrs. Donald Ridder), Moline, Ill.; Agnes (Mrs. Floyd Mlady), Santa Anna, Calif.; Paul- married to Shirley Michel, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Regina (Mrs. John Roemen) and Dorothy, both of Larchwood; and John-who married Becky Tobey, Tucson, Ariz. Peter died on October 24, 1956. The family are members of St. Mary's Catholic Church. Nellie still resides in Larchwood. * A correction from Douglas Schettler that John and Alieda retired to Larchwood, Iowa, instead of Rock Valley, Iowa. SCHREURS, GEORGE was born April 3, 1898, the son of William and Marguerite Schreurs. Mildred Gunter was born December 27, 1900, at Alvord, Iowa. They were married at Sacred Heart Catholic Church on January 30, 1929. Their home was blessed with three children-Georgiann (Mrs. Dick Thompson), Larchwood; Myril (deceased); and Arlyn-married to Clarice Oliver of Canton, S.D. Mildred and George have ten grandchildren. George helps his son, Arlyn, on the farm. Arlyn is the third generation on the Schreurs' farm southwest of Larchwood. The Schreurs are members of St. Mary's Parish. SCHREURS, WILLIAM was born May 29, 1863, in Swalmon, Holland. Marguerite Rutten was born July 20, 1867, at Beegden, Holland. They were married May 12, 1885, and were blessed with twelve children,-Mary, Minnie, Gertrude, Frank, and Fred (all deceased); Anna (Mrs. Dick Dubbelde), Tyler, Minn.; Mathias-who married Frances Kuhl, Garretson, S.D.; Leo-married to Elvera Wilsand, Milbank, S.D.; Joseph- married to Cleola Kehoe, Cushing, Iowa; Frances (Mrs. Flood), Sioux Falls, S.D.; George-married to Mildred Gunter, and Herman-who married Jean Blaine, both of Larchwood. The Schreurs left the Netherlands the year after their marriage for Breda, Iowa, where they farmed for eight years. In 1894 they came to northwest Iowa with a team and wagon and moved to a farm southwest of town. William and Marguerite retired in 1930, with their son, George, taking over the home place. William passed away March 22, 1951, and Marguerite on October 15, 1951. SCHUMANN, ALBERT was born July 11, 1869. On September 21, 1893, Albert married Lena Klein, who was born January 7, 1865. They were parents of three daughters- Emilie and Selma (both deceased), and Lydia (Mrs. Emil Vogel, Rock Rapids, Iowa. The Schumanns came from Sauk City, Wis. They lived on a farm in Logan Township for five years and then bought a farm in Larchwood Township, just northeast of Larchwood. About 1906 Albert and Lena bought a home in Larchwood. Albert then worked as a carpenter, a janitor at the school, and for W.F. Oehmke, who owned an implement business. They were charter members of the Lutheran Church at Larchwood. In 1918 Albert and Lena moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa. Albert passed away June 3, 1948 and Lena on October 10, 1949. SCHUMANN, OSCAR was born in 1870 in Madison, Wis., and in 1897 was married to Louisa Bauer, who was born in 1870. Oscar and Louisa had three children-Elmer and Vernice, both deceased; and Clarence-who married Violet Clausen, and after her death married Hilda Schemmel, Alvord, Iowa. The Schumanns lived on a farm north of Larchwood for ten years and then moved into town and operated a cream station for a time. They later purchased the International Implement Shop and remained in business until 1950. Oscar was a great lover of flowers, working and planting many beautiful flowers at the City Park. Louisa passed away in 1927 and Oscar in 1955. SCHUTTOFFEL, EMIEL, son of John and Clara Schuttoffel, was born January 5, 1884, at Walnut, Iowa; and Helena Roemen was born December 6, 1893, at Larchwood. They were married December 28, 1909, at St. Mary's Church and became the parents of nine children-Rose Marie (deceased;); Anita (Mrs. Owen King, Clearwater, Fla.; Edward-who married Mary Ann Tesherra, El Granada, Calif.; Dorothy (Mrs. Joseph Turmes), Kingsley, Iowa; Therese (Mrs. Freddie Langfeldt), Alvord,Iowa; Cletus- married to Carol Hanson, Canton, S.D.; Shirley (Mrs. Ray Swanson), New Ulm, Minn.; John-married to Lucille Bartman, and Ronald-who married Lorna Ahrendt, both of Larchwood. In 1905 Emiel came to Larchwood with three horses, a wagon, and a plow to begin farming on his father's farm. In 1935, after the R.E.A. came into being, Emiel became interested in bring electricity to farms in northwest Iowa. After many years a dream became a reality when he pulled the switch on September 28, 1939, energizing much of the rural area of Lyon County. He served as the first president of the L.R.E.C. and continued in this capacity until his death on August 29, 1959. Helena is still living in Larchwood. SCHWARTZ, FRANK and Henrietta Bruggeman were both born in Germany. They were married on February 24, 1890. They were blessed with five children-Henry-who married Ann Rutten, Murdo, S.D.; George-who married Frances Bornong, Dell Rapids, S.D.; Loretta (Mrs. Henry Cero), Omaha, Nebr.; Joseph and Leonra (both deceased). Frank and Henrietta farmed in the Larchwood community for many years, first on the farm north of town known as the Ed Reinke farm, and in 1905 moving to a farm southwest of Larchwood in Centenniel Township. Henrietta passed away January 20, 1942 and Frank on October 7, 1950. SCOTT, JOHN A. was born December 21, 1854; and his wife, Mary Addy, was born May 21, 1856, both in Ohio. The couple was married February 3, 1876, in Saybrook, Ill. They were the parents of-Lillian, Elmer, Harry, Marion, Albert, Leslie, Sheldon, Laurie, and Howard (all deceased); and Estella (Mrs. Elmer Allen) of Valley Springs, S.D. The Scotts came to Larchwood in 1882. John taught school in the Tracy school during the winter. They later moved east of town, where he found the bodies of the Cleveland boys who lost their lives in the "Blizzard of 1888." The Scotts moved to Minnehaha County, S.D., in 1888, where he passed away October 21, 1938, and she on January 2, 1939. SEHR, NICK and his wife, Anna Enders, were both born in Dane County, Wisc. Anna was born in 1869 and Nick on September 4, 1871. They were married in 1891 and then moved to Lyon County. They had eight children-Louie, Edward, Joseph, and Nettie (all deceased); Anna (Mrs. George Sauers) and William-who married Dolores Reinke, both of Larchwood; Frank-married to Ann Daniels, Inwood, Iowa; and Steven-who married Elizaabeth Daniels, Sioux Falls, S.D. The Sehrs farmed in the Alvord, Inwood and Larchwood area. They were charter members of the Sacred Heart Church of Alvord, Iowa. Anna passed away July 27, 1920 and Nick on April 8, 1926. SEVERSON, L.O.(LARS) was born in Norway on January 3, 1869, and came to America when he was sixteen years old. He married Julia Anderson on December 21, 1889, at Sioux Falls, S.D. Julia was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa, on July 22, 1869. Lars and Julia were the parents of nine children,-Elmer and Stenno (both deceased); Vierney (Mrs. John Thompson) and Myrtle (Mrs. W.J. Wilkens), both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Lottie (Mrs. Nels Ugland) and Arthur-married to Muriel O'Hara, both of Valley Springs, S.D.; Josephine (Mrs. Brian Quack), Oakland, Calif.; Gladys (Mrs. Richard Laughton), LeMars, Iowa; and Lester-who married Dorothy McEnaney, Mankato, Minn. Lars was elected to the Lyon County Board of Supervisors in 1917 and held this position until 1932. The Seversons farmed in Sioux Township until 1943, when they first moved into Larchwood and the following spring to Valley Springs, S.D. Lars passed away in November of 1944 and Julia in December of 1944. SEVERSON, AMOS was born June 22, 1840, in Norway and immigrated to Quebec, Canada, in 1858 and to St. Paul, Minn., the next year. He served in the Civil War and then came to Winneshiek County and purchased a farm. On October 14, 1865, Amos married Olina Klougeland Olsen, who was born January 2, 1833. They became the parents of four children-Simon, Rachael, Andrew, and Ole (all deceased). The Amos Seversons moved to Lyon County in Centennial Township, where they lived in a dugout for a short time. Being a Civil War Veteran, Amos was entitled to homestead two quarters of land in the Klondike area; and it was there that the Seversons built their home. Amos served on the County Board of Supervisors for some time. Olina passed away April 29, 1904. Amos continued to farm until 1908 when he sold his farm to his son, Simon, and returned to Norway. While there he married his second wife and after her death in 1920, Amos returned to live with Simon and his family until he passed away in 1925. SEVERSON, SIMON was born in Winneshiek County, Iowa, on May 2, 1868, and came with his parents by covered wagon to Centennial Township in 1869. He married Karoline Skotheien on July 6, 1894. She was born in Norway on June 28, 1875, and came here when she was seven years of age. To this union were born five children-Oliva (deceased); Adolph-who married Thelma Ugland, Harrisburg, S.D.; Omar-married to Eva Egge, and Jeannette (Mrs. Bert Thompson), both of Inwood, Iowa; and Olive (Mrs. Harold Madland), Canton, S.D. The Seversons farmed in Centennial Township. Karoline passed away March 29, 1933, and Simon on October 23, 1948. SHEELER, LLOYD was born February 13, 1901, at Pierson, Ia. He married Lillian Rentschler on March 7, 1934, at Sioux City, Ia. She was born on February 2, 1908, at Sioux Center, Ia. They became the parents of four children-Carolyn (Mrs. Dennis Snyders) and Larry-who married Sharlene Stettnichs, both of Luverne, Minn.; Gloria (Mrs. Don Ellsworth, Cleveland, Ohio; and Dean-who married Darlene DeBates, Larchwood. There are 11 grandchildren. After their marriage, Lillian and Lloyd farmed at Kingsley and LeMars, Ia., before coming to Larchwood in 1941, where they farmed northwest of town. Their son, Dean, now farms on the home place. Lloyd passed away on January 28, 1958; and Lillian now resides in Sioux City, Iowa. SNYDER, LEO was born in Beegden, Holland, on October 23, 1855. He came to America in 1884 and lived in Breda, Iowa. He went back to Holland and married Gertrude Schreurs on March 20, 1888. She was born October 14, 1865. In the Snyder family were ten children,-Margaret and Fred (both deceased); Minnie (Mrs. Bill Dubbelde), Laurence-married to Clara Daniels, and Catherine (Mrs. August Bruggeman), all of Larchwood; Sophia (Mrs. Leo Wiegman), and Jake-who married Minnie Daniels, both of Graceville, Minn.; Mathilda and Lorraine (Mrs. Edward Hathaway), both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Nellie (Mrs. Lyle Kelsey), Riverside, Calif. Gertrude and Leo came to America to make their home in Breda, where they farmed until 1906 and then moved southwest of Larchwood where they lived until their deaths. Leo passed away June 11, 1942 and Gertrude on August 22, 1943 SNYDERS, FRANCIS was born May 10, 1917. He was united in marriage to Elsie LaFrenz of Rock Rapids, Iowa, on November 4, 1937. Elsie was born April 30, 1918. Franz and Elsie are the parents of seven children,-Nancy (Mrs. David Kerkvliet), Jerome-who married LaVonne DeBoer, Richard-married to Marlys Scholten, and Alan, all of Larchwood; Dennis-married to Carolyn Sheeler, Luverne, Minn.; Diane (Mrs. David Hansen), Dell Rapids, S.D.; and Roger James, who died at the age of seven months. There are 11 grandchildren. Franz is the supervisor of Lyon County in District 3 (1971-74.) The Snyders reside in Larchwood. SNYDERS, FRANK born June 17, 1888, was united in marriage on February 9, 1915, to Nellie E. Janssen, who was born February 27, 1895, the daughter of John and Lena Janssen of Madison, S.D. To this union were born ten children,-Mary (Roemen-Mrs. Urban Kramer), Francis-who married Elsie LaFrenz, Paul-married to Joan Krier, Rith (Mrs. Stephen Cain), and Julie (Mrs. Donald L. Roemen), all of Larchwood; Joseph-who married Naomi Keck, Clackamas, Ore.; Irene (Mrs. Joseph Daniels), Matthew-who married Mavis McGuire, and Monica (Mrs. John Weber), all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Helen (Mitchell-Mrs. Marvin Dairiss), of Marion, S.D. Frank and Nellie lived on the family farm until 1919, when they moved to a small acreage on the edge of Larchwood where they still reside. Frank worked for Lyon County where he maintained roads for many years. Their pasture was the Larchwood ball field for some time. Frank and Nellie have 55 grandchildren and 34 great- grandchildren. SNYDERS, JOHN was born April 23, 1854, and his wife, Ann Rutten, in 1852, both at Beegden, Netherlands. They came to America with one child, Agnes (Mrs. Frank Underberg), and settled in Wisconsin. They moved to Carroll County, Iowa, where Margaret (Mrs. P.W. Clercx), Mary (Mrs. Henry Underberg), Francis-who died when four years old, Nellie, Frank-who married Nellie Janssen, Joseph-who married Lorena Ripperda, and Minnie were born. All of the children are now deceased except Frank who lives at Larchwood. In 1900 the family moved to a farm one and one-half miles south of Larchwood. John was organist at St. Mary's Catholic Church until his death December 11, 1909. His family continued farming until Anna moved into Larchwood, where she passed away in 1937. SNYDERS, JOSEPH was born March 30, 1890, and Lorena Ripperda, born March 31, 1898, were married February 17, 1920. They were the parents of nine children,- Marcella (deceased;); Theresa (Mrs. Norbert Bruggeman), Garretson, S.D.; Dorothy (Mrs. Keith Kelly), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Robert-who married Patricia Carpenter, Canton, S.D.; John-married to Adeline LaFrenz, Bernard-married to Dorothy Rath, James-married to Ruth Krier, Raymond (Nick)-who married Adrianna Bouwman, and Veronica (Mrs. Joseph Scholten), all of Larchwood. After their marriage Joseph and Lorena farmed until 1934 when they moved into town and purchased the poolhall, then located where Ron'' Jack and Jill is now located. From 1946 until he retired, Joe was in the trucking business. The couple had 49 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Lorena passed away November 13, 1852 and Joe on January 28, 1965. SNYDERS, PAUL was born September 30, 1924; and Joan Krier was born September 11, 1926. They were married on February 28, 1949, and became the parents of 12 children-Dean, Cindy, Gary, Lyle, Ronald, Tony, Jeffrey, David, Janet, Cathy, Paul, Jr., all of Larchwood; and Beverly (Mrs. Gary Eckholt;), Owatonna, Minn. Paul and Joan have lived in Larchwood since their marriage. Paul is employed as a city driver for John Morrell & Company of Sioux Falls, S.D. The boys have been the "Argus Leader" carriers for the past 12 years. SOLON, MATTHEW C. was born June 29, 1881, and married Carrie M. Mock on October 24, 1911, at Tama, Ia. Carrie was born September 2, 1888, at Toledo, Ia. They were the parents of four sons-Paul (deceased); Harold, Merced, Calif.; C. Wayne, Korea; and Glen of Downey, Calif. For many years Matt was a businessman in Larchwood, managing the Larchwood Lumber Company. He moved to California in 1942, where he now resides. Carrie passed away in January of 1941. SOLON, PATRICK L. was born in Mayo, Ireland, in July of 1845. At the age of 17 years he enlisted in the army during the Civil War. He then returned to Wisconsin. On November 12, 1866 Patrick married Mary McGuire, who was born in Caven, Ireland, on October 21, 1845. This home was blessed with ten children- Michael, Elizabeth, James, John and Thomas (twins), Mary, Emma, and Isabelle (all deceased;); Kathryn (Mrs. John McEnroe), Algona, Ia.; and Matthew-who married Carrie Mock, Paramount, Calif. The Patrick Solons homesteaded near Rock Valley, Ia., in 1870. Patrick and Mary retired in Larchwood in 1905. The couple lived to celebrate their golden anniversary in 1916. Patrick passed away April 7, 1920 and Mary on August 8, 1920. SPENCER, NATHAN was born March 9, 1834, and his wife, Cynthia Williams, who was born August 8, 1829, moved to Larchwood from Granite, around 1900. Cynthia was the mother of J.R. and Frank Williams (both deceased). Nathan was a Civil War Veteran. Cynthia died May 14, 1908. Nathan then went to live with relatives in Ida Grove, Ia., where he passed away April 26, 1917. STIEGELMEYER, CASPER was born in Germany on October 2, 1841, and came to America with his parents in 1853, settling near Springfield, Ill. Louisa Heineman was born May 31, 1854, in Germany, and came to America in 1865. They were married in 1874 and were blessed with seven children-Lewis, Edward, Mathlena, Frank, William, and Elmer (all deceased); and Ezra (Essie)-who married Hazel Brown, Vermillion, S.D. Casper moved to Benton County, Iowa in 1864. The Stiegelmeyers homesteaded in Lyon County south of Larchwood in 1890. Louisa passed away April 17, 1908 and Casper on October 22, 1912. STIEGELMEYER, ELMER was born March 11, 1885, at Benton County, Iowa, and married Catherine Sutton on November 24, 1908, at Sioux Falls, S.D. She was born at Dixon, Ill., on June 13, 1882. Two daughters and one son were born to them-Leona and Marjorie (both deceased); and LeRoy-who married Hazel Juber Youmans, Larchwood. Elmer and Catherine also had two foster daughters-Avis (Mrs. Walt Mulroy) of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Anne (Mrs. Larry Naugle) of Larchwood. After their marriage the Stiegelmeyers lived at Artesian, S.D. In 1912 they moved to Larchwood and settled on the southeast edge of Larchwood and later moved to a farm north of town. They moved into town in 1940, at which time Elmer went into the corn shelling business with his son, LeRoy. Elmer passed away October 1, 1947 and Catherine on July 10, 1957. STIEGELMEYER, LEROY, the son of Elmer and Catherine Stiegelmeyer, was born at Artesian, S.D., on October 28, 1911. He came to Larchwood with his parents at the age of one and grew to manhood here. LeRoy farmed with his father until 1940. On October 30, 1965, at Brookings, S.D., he married Hazel Juber Youmans, who was born February 15, 1903. Hazel was a widow with one daughter, Donna (Mrs. Ralph Carrell), Burbank, Calif., and one grandson whom she raised-Terry Bellonger, who married Linda Jaquea. LeRoy is employed at John Morrell & Co. The couple reside in Larchwood. STETTNICHS, HARRY H. was born at Doon, Iowa, on March 6, 1912. He married Martha B. LaFrenz September 6, 1934. Martha was born January 18, 1912. They have four children, Sharlene (Mrs. Larry Sheeler), Luverne, Minnesota; Virgil, married to Sylvia Egebo, Cleghorn, Iowa; Carol (Mrs. Robert Smith), Canton South Dakota; and Stanley, married to Sharon Warner, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Mary and Martha farmed near Rock Rapids and then near Granite. They were in the restaurant business from 1957 till 1966 when the building burned to the ground. They now farm west of town. STRAND, ELLING married Karen Lauten on July 5, 1891. Elling was born November 8, 1886, and Karen on May 25, 1864. They became the parents of nine daughters; Elline, Jeanette, and Ivy (all deceased); Anna Palma (Mrs. Robert Trowbridge), and Ruby (Mrs. Andrew Quien), all of Canton, South Dakota; Christine (Mrs. Leonard Gaffin), Harrisburg, South Dakota; Myrtle, who married Rev. Orlando Lee, Tacoma, Washington; and Amy (Mrs. Harry Fairchild), Bryant, South Dakota. Elling and Karen came to the Larchwood area from Namdolen, Norway, in April of 1893. They lived first on a farm southeast of Larchwood, where Donald Wahl now lives, and then moved to what is now the Richarz's farm, south of town. In 1911 the family moved to a farm near Canton, South Dakota. Karen passed away on July 20, 1941, and Elling on January 4, 1953. SUMMA, LOWELL was born July 6, 1922; and Josephine Reinke was born February 11, 1926. They were married June 24, 1950, in Larchwood. Their children are; Dale, a student at Fayetteville, Arkansas; Lonna, a student at Iowa City, Iowa; and Gerry at home. SUTTON, S.S. and his wife, Ruth, came to Larchwood in about 1930 to take over the publishing of the "Larchwood Leader". They resided here about two years. In 1932 "The Leader" ceased publication. The Suttons went to Chicago, where Mrs. Sutton was ill for some time and passed away December 1, 1960. They had one daughter, Shirley, of Bay Minette, Alabama. Mr. Sutton is now a resident of the International Typographical Union Home, Colorado Springs, Colorado. SWANSON, CARL T. (Charley) was born December 8, 1862 in Sweden. He arrived in this country in 1869, when he was six years old. Anna Karoline Swanson was born November 8, 1863, and came from Sweden in 1887. They were married September 3, 1888, at Rowena, SD and were very early settlers, who broke the sod, homesteaded the land, and lived in a log house. Four children were born to this union - Mabel, Sioux Falls, SD; Emil and Elmer, both of Larchwood; and Phoebe (Johnson), deceased. anna passed away in November of 1932. charley then married Delma Pruitt of Larchwood. who now lives in Rock Rapids, IA. He passed away July 23, 1954, at the age of 92 years. SWEENEY, PATRICK was born July 5, 1867, and his wife, Ella Robertson, was born February 14, 1875. Two children were born to this union; Francis (deceased) and Sylvia (Mrs. Joseph Lawler) of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Ella passed away April 7, 1901. In 1903 Patrick married Anna Quinlan, who was born February 21, 1885, at Fairview, Iowa. They became the parents of five children; Wilbur and Marie (both deceased); Clifford, married to Pearl Rollag, Sioux City, Iowa; Marjorie (Mrs. Fick), Ventura, California; and John, who married Virginia Waymire, Moline, Illinois. Patrick and Anna farmed in the Larchwood area, until they retired and moved into town. Patrick passed away January 3, 1944, and Anna on August 18, 1968. SWEENEY, THOMAS B. and his wife, Catherine McGrath, were born in Ireland and came to America, where they settled at Dimmock, Ill. They were the parents of 11 children-Edward, Bridget, Mollie, Josie, Thomas, Margaret, Michael, Patrick, the twins-William and Lyda, and Catherine (all deceased). The Thomas Sweeneys came to the Larchwood vicinity around 1880 and purchased a farm west of Larchwood, now known as the Quinlivan farm. The grove which they planted is still there. Catherine passed away March 22, 1893 and Thomas on August 4, 1901. THOMAS, C.F. and his wife, Minnie Greenlief, were from Pattonville, Texas. The Thompsons had two daughters-Mary (Rusho) deceased, and Nellie (Haggardt), Wheaton, Minn. Minnie died in Texas in 1887. C.F. Thompson brought his two small daughters and his mother, a Civil War Widow, to Larchwood in 1889, where he had a real estate business for many years. He passed away in 1932. THOMPSON, SYDNEY B., son of Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Bunbury of England, was born October 11, 1860. He came to the United States in 1886. "Major" as he was familiarly known, had no relatives living in this country. He enjoyed strolling over the countryside, and his heart and pocketbook were always open to the children. Sydney passed November 11, 1926. TOBIASON, CARL was born January 14, 1889, at Hogebeesta, Norway, and came to Inwood, Iowa in 1904. He moved to a farm near Klondike in 1919. Carl is now retired and makes his home in Klondike. TOBIASON, THIES was born September 22, 1839, in Telemark, Norway, and came to America prior to 1861. He fought in the Civil War and then homesteaded in Centennial Township. Thies and his wife, Thorberg Cleaven, who was born June 24, 1853, had 11 children-Jesine, Meria, Louise, Emma, Helen, Inga, Tilda, Elizabeth, Agnes, Theodore and Alfred (all deceased). Thies passed away October 29, 18872 and Thorberg on November 23, 1901. TRACY, EDWARD was born in Canada on August 8, 1845; and his wife, Catherine Skelly, was born on June 25, 1853, in Janesville, Wisc. They were the parents of 12 children-W. Edward, Francis, John, William, Henry, E.M. (Mike), Sylvester, Agnes, and Mary (all deceased); Cecelia (Mrs. Charles Page;) and Vivian (Mrs. Clifford Reinke), both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Edith (Mrs. Ed Reinke) of Larchwood. The Tracys were early settlers in the Larchwood community, settling in Sioux Township. For seven years they lived on what is now the Groth farm. In 1882 they purchased one-half section of land, which was in the family from 1889 - 1964. Edward passed away in 1927 and Catherine on March 3, 1935. TRACY, FRANCIS was born in Janesville, Wisc., August 15, 1876. He came to Larchwood with his parents in 1881 when he was five years old. Cathrine Hickey, his wife, was born in Van Horne, Ia., on July 5, 1869, and came to Larchwood in 1898. They were married in October of 1901 in the Catholic Church at Larchwood. The Tracys had eight children,-Elizabeth and Josephine (both deceased); Frances (Mrs. David Spooner) and Agnes (Mrs. Willis Brown), both of Waterloo, Iowa; Lillian (Mrs. Robert Pitts;), Long Lake, Minn.; Margaret (Mrs. Ray DeLaughter), Sioux City, Iowa; Florence (Mrs. Leo Lahr) and James who married Mae Dillinghan, both of Sioux Falls, S.D. They farmed most of their life in this area. Francis died in August of 1941 and Catherine passed away September 27, 1970, at the age of 101 years. TRACY, ROBERT was born April 24, 1915, at Sioux Falls, S.D., and on November 21, 1936, at Larchwood, was married to Esther Bruggeman, who was born February 1, 1915, at Larchwood. They became the parents of four children-Richard (deceased); Donna (Mrs. Norbert Roemen), Larchwood; Carolyn (Mrs. Clem VanderWoude), Doon, Iowa; and Dale of Sioux Falls, S.D. The Tracys had lived in Sioux Falls for four years when Bob was drafted into the service. Esther came to Larchwood to live, and they continued to live here after Bob returned. He then worked as a govern TRACY, SYLVESTER was born at Larchwood on October 5, 1891, and was united in marriage to Kathryn Tracey on June 30, 1914, at Sioux Falls, S.D. To this union six children were born-Robert and Mary Jane (both deceased); Phyllis (Mrs. Lyle Lewis), Valley Springs, S.D.; Jeannette (Mrs. Robert Kerkvliet), Larchwood; Gerald-married to Ann Delmue, South San Francisco, Calif.; and Eugene-who married Connie Rodriguez, Foster City, Calif. They farmed west of town for many years, and he also did auctioneering in this community. After he retired from the farm he managed the Ford Garage in Larchwood for some time. They resided in California for about four years and then returned to Lyon County and remained here until his death, August 24, 1952. Kathryn lives part time in California and also here with her daughters. UGLAND, EDWARD was born November 25, 1864, at Mosby, Norway, and came to the United States in 1880. He worked as a farmhand first in Clayton County, Iowa and then in Lyon County, Iowa. After six years, Edward bought a farm west of Larchwood. On June 21, 1893, he married Jesine Tobiason, who was born October 3, 1870. She was one of the first white children born in Lyon County. Edward and Jesine were the parents of eight children-Arthur and Edith (both deceased); Nels-married to Lottie Severson, Valley Springs, S.D.; Inga (Mrs. Tobias Stensland), Larchwood; Thelma (Mrs. Adolph Severson), Harrisburg, S.D.; Jalmer (Edwin J.), Canton, S.D.; Mildred (Mrs. Bert Castle) and Theodore-who married Gertie Garvey, both of Sioux Falls, S.D. After their marriage, Edward and Jesine moved to Moody County, S.D., where they purchased a farm. After a few years the family returned to Iowa and settled on a farm in Centennial Township, where Edward lived until his death on September 30, 1930. Jesine preceded him in death on August 16, 1916. UNDERBERG, ANDREW was born May 27, 1913, and Anna Roemen, born February 16;, 1921, were married at St. Mary's Catholic Church on May 30, 1939. Both were born and raised at Larchwood. They are the parents of five children-Janet )Mrs. George VanDenHul) and Donna (Mrs. John Fee), both of Harrisburg, S.D.; Joan (Mrs. Rollo Lottman), Joseph-married to Jacqulyn Linton and John-who married Nancy Skiles, all of Larchwood. The couple has 11 grandchildren. They are farmers and live west of town. UNDERBERG, FRANK was the son of the John Underbergs of Mt. Carmel, Ia., one of fourteen children. He was born March 13, 1877. As a young man he came to Lyon County, and in 1901 he was united in marriage to Agnes Snyders, who was born February 23, 1880, in Holland, the daughter of John and Anna Snyders. The couple had ten children-Clara (Mrs. Phillip Caine), John-who married Laura Burhenn, and after her death married Beatta Eneboe; Henry-who married Frances Schulte, Peter- married to Susan Schington, Loretta (Mrs. Mike Schave), and Matthew-who married Alma Warburg, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Theodore-married to Felicitas (Sid) Perkinson, and Andrew-who married Anna Roemen, both of Larchwood; Collette (Mrs. Joe Rosener), Vail, Ia.; and Agnes (Mrs. George Bell), Rockford, Ill. They farmed in the Larchwood and Gary, S.D., vicinity for many years. Retiring in the spring of 1936, the Underbergs moved into Larchwood. Agnes passed away June 10, 1941 and Frank died in February 1951. VAN ASH, HENRY, son of Mr. and Mrs. Jaques VanAsh was born January 13, 1895, at Heel, Holland. His wife, Sophia Friessen, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Friessen and was born November 4, 1896, at Larchwood. They were married February 21, 1922 and became the parents of six children-Cletus (deceased); Leonella (Mrs. Bob Griffith;), Canton, S.D.; Betty (Mrs. Joe Allen), Kansas City, Mo., Alfred-married to Marilyn Rockhill, Larchwood; Gordon-married to Lois Healy, Pierre, S.D.; and Beverly (Mrs. Lyle Spargo), Rapid City, S.D. Henry left Holland when he was 19 years old, going to Argentina, South America, where he was a cheese and butter maker for two years. He arrived at Larchwood in April of 1917 and soon after enlisted in the navy, serving aboard a transport which made several ocean trips to France. After his discharge he worked for a time as a baker in Sioux City, Iowa, before returning to Larchwood. After their marriage the couple farmed until 1959. In 1969 they built a new home in Larchwood, where they are now living. They have 29 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Henry and Sophia celebrated their golden weddng on February 20, 1972. VAN CITTERS, WILLIAM was born in Worthington, Minn., and his wife, Irene, was born in Camden, N.Y., on December 27, 1889. They were married March 12, 1915, at Sioux City, Ia. Two sons were born to this union-Eugene and Earl. The VanCitters owned and operated the "Larchwood Leader" from 1927-1931. Irene died in 1927 and Bill in 1966. VAN LENT, JOHN, the son of Henry and Louise VanLent, was born July 19, 1892, in Arcadia, Ia. Their family moved to a farm in Dakota County, Nebraska. On April 14, 1920, at Waterbury, Nebraska, John married Maude Sorensen, who was born November 2, 1894. Four children were born to the couple-Monica (Mrs. L.J. Flower), Enterprise, Ala.; Mary (Mrs. Leonard Hasselmann), Sioux Falls, S.D.; Sister Clara, Melrose Park, Ill.; and Jack-who married Gertrude Kamp, Beresford, S. D. Maude passed away April 24, 1945. In 1950 John married Amelia Determan Krier of Canton, S.D. She was born January 4, 1910, and was the mother of three children-Donna (Mrs. Dale Hicks), Canton, S.D; Ronald Krier-married to Virginia Simon, Laurens, Ia.; and Dewayne Krier-who married Maragie Lukken, Davenport, Ia. The VanLent's moved onto Ed Tracy's farm west of Larchwood, where they lived until they retired February 20, 1971. Amelia now resides in Auburn, Ia. VAN RAALTE, ALBERT was born October 20, 1879, in Kampen, Netherlands; and his wife, Hattie DeWeerd, was born July 4, 1884, at Ede, Netherlands. They were married March 18, 1909, at Sioux Center, Ia. The couple had six children-Martha and Marinus (both deceased); William-who married Alice Veldkamp, Larchwood; Albertha (Mrs. Bill Brown), Grace (Mrs. Sy VanderVeen), and Anna Marie (Mrs. Everett Fikse) all of Ripon, Calif.; and two stepchildren-Edward and Tony (both deceased). The VanRaaltes moved to Larchwood in 1921 and farmed in this community for many years. Albert passed away September 29, 1962 and Hattie on October 6, 1969. VAN RAALTE, WILLIAM was born near Larchwood on February 3, 1916; and Alice Veldkamp was born October 6, 1918, at Inwood, Ia. They were married September 12, 1941, at Inwood, Ia. Two children were born to this union-Sharon (Mrs. Pat Garrison) of Brandon, Minn., and Allen-married to Mary DeBoer, of Larchwood. William farmed east of Larchwood until August 4, 1964 when he retired and moved to town. His son, Allen, lives on the home farm. VIERECK, EDWARD, son of Fred and Minnie Viereck, was born May 13, 1905, at Rowena, SD. He married Ivy Horn, daughter of Henry Horn, on June 16, 1928. Ivy was born on December 8, 1910. Ed and Ivy are the parents of two children Rolland, who married Evelyn Claussen, and Karen (Mrs. Edward Hildring), both of Larchwood. After living on various farms in the vicinity, the Vierecks moved onto the home farm of Henry Horn, where they continued farming until moving into Larchwood in 1960. VIERECK, ROY was born February 16, 1907, at Rowena, S.D. On March 21, 1937 he married Mary Bruggeman, who was born September 6, 1904, at Larchwood. They are the parents of three children-Rosemary (Mrs. Dick Moser, Jr.), Hills, Minn.; Arla (Mrs. Ronald Kramer), Larchwood; and Judy (Mrs. Ralph Oliver), Sioux Falls, S.D. The Vierecks farmed in the Larchwood vicinity and were also in the implement business at Larchwood for a number of years. Roy and Mary have nine grandchildren. They are living in Larchwood. VOSBURG, CLINTON HOLMES was born at Doon, Ia., on July 1, 1887. He attended school there, and as a young man he worked with the railroad and farmed. On December 11, 1913, he married Ruth Johnson, who was born May 4, 1893, at Inwood, Ia. They had six children-Shirley (Mrs. Gerald Zuraff), Merle-married to Anitia Songstad, Gordon-who married to Lena Snra, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Clair- married to Jeanette VanderWerf, Valley Springs, S.D.; Dallas-married to Myrna Kuhns, Colton, S.D.; and Harold-who married Luella Rohweder, Larchwood. The Vosburgs moved to the Laarchwood area in 1918 where they farmed until their retirement to Larchwood in 1955. Clinton passed away August 25, 1962; and Ruth moved to Sioux Falls, where she still lives. VOSBURG, HAROLD was born January 2, 1917, at Doon, Iowa. He moved to Larchwood in 1918 with his parents. In April of 1941 he entered the army, being discharged in 1945. He married Luella Rohweder on April 8, 1945 in Sioux Falls, S.D. Luella was born February 12, 1923 in Rock Rapids, Ia. They began farming in 1946 on a farm north of Larchwood, where they still reside. WAAGMEESTER, CORNELIUS JR. born February 3, 1905, at Larchwood and Leona Nicloy, born November 28, 1909, at Rock Rapids, Ia., were married June 9, 1927, at Luverne, Minn. They are the parents of four children-Beverly (Mrs. Wayne Wilke), Lester, Ia.; Robert-married to Janet Wagner, Baltic, S.D.; Gordon-married to June Stewart, and Merle-who married Shirley Messner, both of Rock Rapids, Ia. After their marriage the Waggmeesters farmed until 1936, when Cornelius entered the insurance field which he continued for 34 years. They retired January 1, 1970 in their new home on the south edge of Larchwood, which they moved into in August, 1963. WAAGMEESTER,, CORNELIUS, SR. born in Amsterdam, Holland on January 21, 1874, and Elizabeth VanDerWege, born in the Netherlands on March 10, 1875, were married at Rock Rapids, Iowa in 1894 and settled in Lyon County in 1895. They were the parents of eight children,-Gertrude and William (both deceased); Hilda (Mrs. R. VanDerPoll), Artesia, Calif.; Cornelius-who married Leona Nicloy, Larchwood; John-married to Gertrude Francis, Worthington, Minn.; Elizabeth (Mrs. William Jibben), and Harvey-married to Iona Lewis, both of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and Richard-who married Rose Marie Borash, White Bear Lake, Minn. Cornelius and Elizabeth endured many hardships, living on very little, with a box for a table and boxes taking the place of chairs. They were members of the Congregational Church of Larchwood. Corneliius passed away at Larchwood on January 19, and Elizabeth on November 5, 1959. WAGNER, JACOB L. was born July 27, 1847, in Germany and at the age of 14 came to Philadelphia, Pa., where he was an apprentice tinner. He then moved to the Cedar Rapids, Ia., area. In 1871 Jacob married Rachael Kirkpatrick, who was born in 1853 at Mt. Vernon, Iowa. They were the parents of six children-Ben, Mert, Bert, and Charlie (all deceased); Will, living at a rest home in Omaha, Nebraska; and Kathryn, who lives in a rest home at Rock Rapids, Iowa. Rachael passed away in 1886, and in 1892 Jacob and the children moved to a farm northwest of Larchwood until 1900, when he purchased the place now occupied by the Lowell Summa family. A broom corn was grown on this farm at that time to supply the broom factory with materials. Jacob worked as a tinner for the John Cauley Hardware Store, where he made general hardware items. He lived with his daughter, Kathryn, in Larchwood until his death in 1940. WALLACE, W. FRANK was born in the Eastern United States in 1854. While driving a team of oxen through Sioux Falls, S.D., he met Esther Dement and later married her on September 30, 1879. Esther was born in 1858. The couple then started a homestead east of Larchwood. They had four children-Ben, Francis, Sadie (all deceased), and Clara (Mrs. Fred Grotewold), Hills, Minn. In the early eighties they moved into Larchwood and operated a cafe until moving to North Dakota to homestead for four years. They returned to Larchwood and reopened a cafe. Later he did interior decorating until his death in 1926. Esther preceded her husband in death in 1925. WALSH, THOMAS was born April 3, 1888. On January 15, 1918 he married Anastatia Reilly, who was born June 14, 1895. They became the parents of three daughters- Alice (Stanton-Mrs. Walter Calmus), Howard, S.D.; Mary (Mrs. Milton McDonald), Des Moines, Ia.; and Veronica (Sister Terence O.S.F.), Sioux City, Ia. Thomas was a veteran of World War I and was wounded in the service in France. Anastatia taught school for five years before her marriage. The Walshes farmed near Granite, Ia. Thomas passed away January 16, 1925. Anastatia was postmistress in Larchwood from 1942 to 1962. She has 11 grandchildren. WARNER, ARNOLD D. was born April 5, 1922. On June 9, 1945, at Sioux Falls, S.D., he married Arlene Lawrence, who was born March 24, 1925. They are the parents of five children-Joanne, Luanne, Lawrence-married to Glenda Dykstra, Linda, and Lee, all of Larchwood. The Warners farmed two miles east of Larchwood until 1971 when they moved into Larchwood. Their son, Lawrence, and his family, now live on the home place. Arnold and Arlene have two grandchildren. The Warner family are members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church at Hills, Minn. WARNER, HERMAN was married to Lena Kellenberger Metzger at Rock Rapids, Ia., on December 7, 1921. Herman was born at Larchwood on April 29, 1895; and Lena was born on March 14, 1899, in Oklahoma Territory. Lena, who was married to Benjamin Metzger until his death, had one daughter, Benola (Mrs. Leon Pettengill), Rochester, Minn. Herman and Lena became the parents of two children-Alvina (Mrs. Clifford Van Wyhe), Steen, Minn., and Mervin-who married Neaita Osvog, Larchwood. There are eight grandchildren. The Warners farmed southeast of Larchwood for 26 years. They moved to Rock Rapids, Iowa in 1945 and Sioux Falls, S.D., in 1951. Herman passed away May 26, 1971. WARNER, MERVIN son of Herman and Lena Warner, and Neaita Osvog of Canton, S.D., were married July 3, 1944, at Sioux Falls, S.D. Mervin was born September 24, 1922, and Neaita on September 2, 1921. They have two sons-Hugh-who married Mary Jerke, and Wayne-married to Eloise Boer, both of Larchwood. After their marriage Mervin and Neaita farmed southeast of Larchwood until 1971 when they moved into Larchwood. Their son, Wayne, now lives on the home place. WARNER, WILLIAM A. was born in Germany on May 4, 1863; and his wife, Alvina Kirchner, was born May 26, 1871, at Keystone, Ia. They were married at Vinton, Iowa on December 27, 1888. Seven children were born to this union,-Ella and Herman (both deceased); Adelia (Mrs. Fred Vogel), Lillian (Bunte-Mrs. Olaf Hagen), and Elmer-married to Leona Laackman, all of Rock Rapids, Iowa; Bill-who married Lulu Schwenck, and after her death, married Ann Johnson, and John-who married Mabel Groth, all of Sioux Falls, S.D. The Warners farmed near Remsen, Iowa for two years and then moved to Larchwood in 1891. Except for four years spent on an acreage near Greeley, Colorado, they lived on a farm near Larchwood until retiring to Rock Rapids, Iowa in 1919. While living near Larchwood they took part in organizing the Evangelical Church and its various activities. William and Alvina had 17 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. William passed away April 5, 1960 and Alvina on August 11, 1970. WARNER, RALPH W. and Betty J. Bale were married on December 5, 1943, at Sioux Falls, S.D. Ralph was born December 21, 1920 at Larchwood, and Betty on December 30, 1924, at Sioux Falls. They became the parents of four children-Carolyn (Mrs. Michael Menage), Wall Lake, Iowa; Beverly, Iowa City, Iowa; Janice, Sioux Falls, S.D.; and William, Larchwood. The Warners farm five miles southeast of Larchwood. They belong to the United Church of Christ. WARNER, WILLIAM G., born September 28, 1893, at Larchwood, was married on December 10, 1919, at Davenport, Iowa, to Lulu Schwenck, who was born December 15, 1891. To this union were born four children-Ralph-married to Betty Bale, and Arnold-who married Arlene Lawrence, both of Larchwood; Lowell-married to Deloris Anderson, Rock Rapids, Iowa, and Wilton-who married Joyce Schmidt, Minnetonka, Minn. Bill and Lulu farmed two miles east of Larchwood until January of 1946, when they retired and moved to Sioux Falls, S.D. Lulu passed away May 26, 1948. On April 30, 1950, Bill married Ann Johnson at Sioux Falls, where they still reside. Her daughter, Anna Johnson (Mrs. Allan Opland), lives at Pipestone, Minn. WEBBER, WILLIAM was born February 13, 1840 in Cornwall, England. When a young man he settled in Wisconsin and then enlisted and served in the Civil War. In 1864 he married Josephine Wachtler McKelvey, the widow of John McKelvey. She was born on March 19, 1841, in Vicksburg, Miss.; and when a small girl she played with President Grant's children. Josephine had two small sons-John and Ed McKelvey (both deceased). William and Josephine were the parents of five children-Clara, Josie, Dr. William, George and Leon (all deceased). The Webbers farmed in Wisconsin before coming to Larchwood in 1889, where they located on a farm southwest of Larchwood. John, Ed and Leon were participants in the Alaskan gold rush. William passed away October 24, 1889 and Josephine on February 22, 1934. WESSEL, EMIL P. was born August 11, 1894, near Edgewood, Iowa. Eula Bullock was born April 15, 1899 at Bloomfield, Iowa. Emil enlisted in the army and served during World War I. Eula and Emil were married May 27, 1924, at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, Iowa. They are the parents of two children-Kathryn (Mrs. Merlyn Lee), West Des Moines, Ia.; and Robert-who married Millicent Johnston, Claremont, Calif. The Wessels moved to Larchwood in 1932. He was superintendent of schools for a number of years, and both have been active in the educational field. Emil also worked in the field of electrical engineering, mining and research. WHALEN, THOMAS was born November 14, 1871. On May 22, 1901, at Rock Valley, Iowa, Thomas married Ellen McGuire, who was born October 1, 1879. Ellen grew up living in a sod house. They were the parents of eight children-John and Arnold (both deceased); Celia (Mrs. P.F. Keegan), Jane (Mrs. Henry Klein), Mabel (Mrs. John Mundt), and Cecil-married to Dorothy Nelson, all of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Elizabeth (Mrs. F.M. Keegan), Santa Monica, Calif.; and Leonard-who married Mabel Marotta, Glendale, Calif. On March 1, 1908, the Whalen family moved to Larchwood, where they purchased a farm two miles east of town known as the J.H. Peacock Ranch. Celia, and Cecil, were employed by R.G. Gerner, who operated a general merchandise store in Larchwood. Later when fire had damaged the building, they purchased it and for several years operated the Whalen Grocery Store. After Thomas passed away October 21, 1939 the family moved to Sioux Falls, S.D. Ellen, now 92 years old, makes her home with her daughter, Celia, and her family at Sioux Falls. WIGHTMAN, ANDREW was born August 26, 1864, at New Woodstock, N.Y.; and Sarah Jones was born in October of 1864 at Bueford, Wales. She came to America at the age of 13. They were married in December of 1887 at Cazinovia, N.Y. To this union six children were born-Irving and Wilbur (both deceased), Leslie-married Bessie McKee, and after her death, married Ella Fleming, Northfield, Minn.; Ira- married to Thora Dixon, and Leona (Mrs. Ove Siolseth), both of Minneapolis, Minn.; and Stanley00who married Effie Marie Middlen, Doon, Iowa. The Wightman family came to Larchwood in 1899. Andrew worked for the Delaney Implement Company and then formed a partnership with Charley Miller, selling International Harvester products. In 1910 they started farming west of Larchwood. Andrew passed away in 1935 and Sarah in 1945. WIGHTMAN, IRVING was born at Inwood, Iowa on July 25, 1891, of Welsh parents, Andrew and Sarah Wightman. Ida Rudloff was born February 10, 1892. They were married on October 23, 1912, and became the parents of two children-Wyant-who married Marian Roti, Norfolk, Nebr.; and Vernice (Mrs. Harold Bonander) of Larchwood. Irving operated a cafe in Larchwood and was a painter in this community and later a farmer. Ida passed away January 11, 1951, and Irving on July 5, 1964. WIGHTMAN, STANLEY, who was born May 15, 1899, lived in Larchwood from 1899 until 1944. He was united in marrige to Effie Marie Middlen of Highland, Wisconsin, on September 29, 1928. Effie was born August 26, 1906. Five sons were born to them- Darwin-who married Jean Briggs, Fargo, N.D.; Don-married to Neta Paulson, Dysart, Iowa; Allen-married to Carol Neese, Ames, Iowa; James-married to Sandra Gerritson, Montclair, California; and Tom-who married Lillian DeJaegher, Slater, Iowa. The Wightmans now reside at Doon, Iowa. WILKA, ROBERT was born Aug. 19, 1855, in Pommera, Germany. He came to America in 1863, and settled at McGregor, IA. On Feb. 13,1885, he married Emilie Sanow, who was born Aug. 7, 1865. There were six children born to them - Lena, Tille, Edith and William (all deceased); Bertha, (Mrs. Henry Donnelly) and Anna, both of Sioux Falls, SD The Wilkas moved to Lyon county in 1885 and settled on a farm south of Larchwood, later moving to Granite, IA. Emilie died on December 23, 1918, and Robert on June 10, 1925. WILLARD, SHERLOCK was born January 16, 1813; and his wife, Mary E., was born July 25, 1823. Their children were-Allie, William, Charlotte, Galena, Maria, and Elizabeth (all deceased). The Willard family moved to Larchwood in 1872, where he built the first house, which is now owned and occupied by his great-great grandson, Marvin Parkinson. Sherlock died March 2, 1882 and Mary on May 28, 1892. WILLIAMS, DAVID LEE was born September 25, 1889, at Granite, Iowa; and Marietta Cleveland was born October 25, 1891, at Rodney, Iowa. They were married December 16, 1911, at Sioux City, Iowa. The couple were the parents of four children- Dean-who married Iona Parks, Larchwood; Gordon-married to Florence Jensen, Aberdeen, South Dakota; Robert-who married Helen Hendrickson, and Janet (Mrs. Warren (Bud) Thoms), both of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Lee was in the mercantile business with his father, Frank, of Hornick, Iowa. The family came to Larchwood in 1919 and was in the general store business for 36 years. Lee was a member of the City Council, serving at the time bids were let for our town's public water system. The Williams were members of the Methodist and later Congregational Church. Lee passed away November 28, 1952 and Etta is living in Larchwood. WILLIAMS, DEAN and Iona Parks were married at Larchwood on May 25, 1941. Dean was born April 6, 1915, and Iona on October 22, 1910. They were the parents of one daughter, Deanna, who lost her life in a highway accident on December 11, 1964, while a student at the University of South Dakota. Dean has carpentered in the area and at present is associated with the Froehlich Construction Company of Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Iona teaches in the West Lyon Community school system. Her career in education covers 26 years of teaching. Dean and Iona attend the United Church of Christ. WILLIAMS, FRANCIS MARION (FRANK) was born at Eyota, Minnesota in 1858, the son of David Lee and Cynthia Williams. He married Harriet Roberts (Nellie) at Sac City, Iowa in 1888. She was born in Cream Ridge, Missouri on April 3, 1867. They were the parents of three children-David Lee and Dr. Forrest Earl (both deceased); and Dr. Francis Raymond, married to Pauline Hunt, Rapid City, South Dakota. Frank and Nellie lived at Granite where he was a herdsman, handling over 1,000 head per season. In 1894 they moved to Hornick, Iowa, where he operated ageneral store and served as postmaster. They moved to Larchwood in 1919, where Frank and his son, Lee, owned and operated a general store until Frank passed away in August of 1928. Nellie passed away in April of 1948 in Rapid City, South Dakota. WILLIAMS, JAMES R. was born July 9, 1860, at Eyota, Minnesota, and Mary Edith McClay on September 3, 1863, in Plattsmouth, Nebraska. They were married in 1884 and were the parents of five children-Jeanette, Edith and Kathryn (all deceased); Russell, Rapid City, South Dakota; and Ralph of Kent, Washington. The family came to Larchwood from Holyoke, Colorado in 1892. James was engaged in the drugstore business until 1910 when he sold it to N.E. Getman. He also operated drugstores in Sioux Falls and Wakonda, South Dakota. He was mayor and postmaster of Larchwood. James passed away in 1922 and Mary in 1945. WINEMAN, RALPH was born September 6, 1897, in Auburn, IL and on February 17, 1939, at Rock Rapids, IA married Gladys Birkemo, who was born at Hayti, SD. The Winemans established a poultry and hatchery business near Granite, IA. and specialized in Rhode Island Reds. In 1943 many times they walked home down the railroad track after two o'clock in the morning because the railroad track was blocked with snow. They then walked back by six o'clock the next morning to tend the incubators. The Winemans still live at Granite and operate the hatchery there. WULF, ALBERT J. was born in Allison Township, east of Lester, on August 13, 1880, and Maria Knobloch on June 14, 1890, in Cleveland Township. They were married on February 14, 1914. The couple were the parents of 11 children,-Emil- married to Elizabeth Moser, Amelia (Mrs. Edward Roemen), and Lawrence, all of Larchwood; Wilhelm-married to Leona Banwart, Hills, Minnesota; Emma (deceased); Karoline (Mrs. Doorneweerd), and Jacob-married to Alice Moser, both of Lester, Iowa; Mildred (Mrs. Vigril Sauder) and Marilyn (Mrs. Ray Luthi), both of Hancock, Minnesota; Leonard-who married Violet Luthi, Morris, Minnesota; and Leah (Mrs. Dick Doorneweerd), Valley Springs, South Dakota. Albert farmed in the Lester area for many years until his retirement when his youngest son, Lawrence, took over the farm. Albert passed away July 8, 1960 and his wife on April 19, 1964. WULF, EMIL H., son of Albert Wulf, married Elizabeth Moser on April 26, 1939. Elizabeth was born October 28, 1916, and Emil on March 21, 1915. They have 11 children,-Helen (Mrs. Willim Sharp), Streamwood, Illinois; Betty (Mrs. Mike McDonnell), Highmore, South Dakota; Leo-who married Wanda Hinckley, Robert- married to Linda Hinckley, Kenneth, Donald, Ronald and Ray, all of Larchwood; Clifford-married to Carol DeNeui, Lennox, South Dakota; and Floyd and Lloyd, both serving in the army. The Wulfs live on a farm south of Larchwood. WYANT, RUSSELL W. was born March 7, 1893, in Beadle county, SD and Rozetta McNerney, born October 30, 1892, at Sibley, IA, were married October 12, 1921, at Sibley, IA. They became the parents of two sons - Robert, married to Maxine Schoening and living in Sioux Falls, SD; and Ronald, who married Joyce Ann Jacobson, Sioux city, IA. Rozetta passed away on December 6, 1965. On June 14, 1967, Russell married Mrs. Leona McGuire Powers, who was born January 30, 1904, at Larchwood. Russell was a World War I veteran. He came to Larchwood in May of 1915, began working as a bookkeeper in the Farmer Savings Bank, and then spent 46 continuous years in the banking business. He was one of the original stockholders and manager of the Granite Savings Bank, which was the only bank in Lyon county that was not forced to close its doors during the depression. In 1934 the Granite Savings Bank moved its charter to Larchwood and became known as the Security Savings Bank of Larchwood. Russell and Leona spend their winters in Texas and summers in Larchwood. ZANGGER, CHARLIE, son of Gottfried and Rosa Zangger, was born November 18, 1888, near Remsen, Iowa, and came with his parents to Larchwood in 1902. He was married to Lina Sharp at Estherville, Iowa on January 10, 1911. Lina, who was born December 2, 1884, at Estherville, Iowa, was a teacher in the Larchwood High School. They are the parents of-Edith (Mrs. R.D. Handley) deceased; Clinton- married to Blondina Unruh, Mesa, Arizona, and Russell-who married Marie (Dolly) Unruh, Larchwood. The Zanggers moved to the farm one mile east of Larchwood in 1913, where they farmed and raised registered polled Hereford cattle. This farm was a part of the holdings of Mr. Fell and was previously owned by James Dement. The lumber for the house had been hauled from LeMars, Iowa. Charlie and Lina are members of the United Church of Christ. They are now retired on the farm. ZANGEER, GOTTFRIED was born in Solothurn, Switzerland, June 30, 1862, and came to America with his parents when he was 16 year old. Rosa Kohler, born July 10, 1864, at Elgin, Iowa, and also of Swiss descent, was married to Gottfried March 2, 1886, at Remsen, Iowa. They were the parents of-Lucy (Mrs. William Herbst), and Esther (Mrs. Frank Mund), both deceased; Charlie-married to Lina Sharp, Larchwood; Wilbert-married to Merle Burris, North Loup, Nebraska; and Roy-who married Gladys Grimm, Costa Mesa, California. In 1902 the family came to Larchwood from Marcus, Iowa and located on a farm one-half mile east of town. It was a part of the Sykes estate, bordered by many trees, which the Sykes had planted. A new home was built on this farm in 1903. In 1905 under the leadership of Rev. Rest, Gottfried, with others, was instrumental in the organizing and building of the German Evangelical Church in Larchwood. Gottfried and Rosa retired to Larchwood for nine years, and later moved to Long Beach, Calif.; where he passed away July 18, 1934, and she on August 17, 1934. ZANGGER, ROY and Gladys Grimm were married March 3, 1915 at Larchwood. Roy was born September 16, 1892 at Remsen, Iowa, and Gladys on January 30, 1897 at Garrison, Iowa. They were the parents of four children-Keith and Don (both deceased); Lavorrne (Mrs. Al Parker), Sacramento, California; and Vera (Mrs. Harley Waters), Long Beach, California. Roy and Gladys farmed on the Zangger home place east of Larchwood for 10 years and then moved to California, where he now resides in Costa Mesa. ZANGGER, RUSSEL son of Charlie and Lina Zangger, was born February 22, 1922 at Larchwood. On May 24, 1944 he married Marie (Dolly) Unruh, who was born August 26, 1924 at Hurley, South Dakota. They have one son, James, who lives at home. Besides farming, they own and operate the Zangger Flying Service, with Russell as Flight Instructor and Dolly at Aviation Ground School Instructor. The airport is located one and one-fourth miles east of Larchwood, equipped with hangers and hard-surface runways. They are members of the United Church of Christ. ZANGGER, WILBERT was born September 23, 1890 at Remsen, Iowa. On September 21, 1918 Wilbert married Merle Burris, who was born September 21, 1891 at Garrison, Iowa. The couple had two children-Charles-who married Margaret Parker, North Loup, Nebraska; and Esther, married to Dr. Ned Raun, Columbia, South America. Merle was a teacher in the Larchwood Public School. Wilbert and Merle farmed two miles east of Larchwood from 1918 to 1924, when they moved to North Loup, Nebraska. They raised registered polled Hereford cattle. Merle passed away September 10, 1964. Wilbert is now retired.
