F Fourth Iowa Infantry Page 1 Madison Co. Iowa Apr 28 **** John A. Faurote, Esq. Dear Sir: Agreeable to request I furnish herewith a list of Co "F" 4th *** Inf. upto and including the battle of Jonesboro and skirmish of Lovejoy the 2nd Sept. 1864. This was made while we were at Atlanta as you may remember. Their (sic) may be some slight errors, but it is correct as far as we could make it at the time. In order to get the battles each one was engaged in on the "Congressional Record" I have a figure to correspond to each battle. I place a list of battles on the margin of the "Record" (Most of them are printed there already) then I place a figure oposite (sic) the name of the battle- P. Ridge is 2. Chickasaw 3 +c. then oposite (sic) the soldiers name on the "Record" I place figures which correspond to the battles in which which he was engaged- this J.F. Smith 1.2.3, meaning that he was at Sugar Creek, P.Ridge + Chickasaw. You notice that I have underscored 3 for Smith. This means that he was wounded. Instead of underscoring on the "Record" I **** the engagements where wounded in red ink. Then where killed , reduced, or promoted I say so in the remarks. On next page (margin) you see I have a list of battles with their (sic) corresponding numbers. Dates and remarks already on "Record" are not repeated here.
