Iowa December 1, 1880 Cards are out for the celebration of the silver wedding of Mr. & Mrs. W. W. MCKNIGHT, Thursday evening. Henry POPE, who formerly lived near town in the MCMILLAN property and then traded for a store at Milford, Montgomery county, this state, was burned last week. The fire caught from a defective flu. We understand the loss is heavy. A number of the citizens of Winterset got together the other day and concluded to advertise for bids for boring for coal and see what the probable cost for prospecting would be. Any one who desires to put in a bid for drilling can address C. C. GOODALE. J. J. GASTON, who has been salesman in the Agricultural Implement firm of HEDGE, DICKEY & Co., has gone into partnership with E. W. JONES in the same business; the partnership to commence January first. The north side of the square is now, with one exception, solid brick. Mr. and Mrs. F. H. ROPER returned Saturday from Wisconsin where they had been attending the sixtieth anniversary of the marriage of the formers parents. The father is past his eighty-third year and his mother is three years his junior. The Winterset Madisonian Winterset, Madison Co. Iowa December 8, 1880 That estimable farmer of Ohio township, D. T. SHULTZ has sold his farm to Jacob BANKER, from the state of Ohio. The price was $2,400. Last week, Hattie MARDIS, a daughter of T. F. MARDIS, was shot by a school mate, with a bow and arrow, inflicting a serious wound in the forehead. An oyster supper was held at the MCBRIDE home in Jefferson township last Friday evening. Ersie GILPIN left Monday for Lexington, Missouri, where he will join the Northwestern Theatre company. He will travel as their advance agent. Annie, daughter of R. C. BROWN of Douglas township died last Friday and was buried the following Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. Lorenzo FINNEY of Patterson, announce the birth of a son. It is expected that the new Buffalo mills will be in running order some time in January. Samuel MYER’S new house is about ready for occupancy. Dr. F. K. REINHOLD of Davenport will soon locate in this town. The Methodists will dedicate their new church on Sunday, December 19. The thermometer registered 8 degrees below zero on Monday morning. C. C. KRABIEL has purchased the beautiful residence of Mrs. BULLOCK, paying $1,800. John CLUEN is putting up ice at the rate of about 100 tons a day. Cards will announce the marriage of William HORNBECK to Miss LOVE of Albia. City Attorney MILLER was married last Tuesday evening to County superintendent RAY. Died at her home in Peru, December 1, 1880, Mrs. S. C. WAECHTER, wife of J. J. WAECHTER. The St. Charles Cornet band will give a festival Thursday night, between Christmas and New Year’s day. Dr. and Mrs. MALTBY entertained a number of friends at their home Friday evening. The Winterset Madisonian Winterset, Madison Co. Iowa December 15, 1880 W. C. NEWLON sold to C. A. GASKILL on Saturday, Major Conger’s 440 acre farm in Jackson township. The price paid was $8, 640. Mr. GASKILL intends making a horse farm out of it, and will remove his entire lot of trotting horses, about 75 head to this farm, about the first of January. Clarence MITCHELL is now employed in Krabiel’s Dry Goods house. He has sold his interest in his store in Des Moines, to his old partner, Mr. WYNN. Iowa’s new state treasurer, Major CONGER, with his wife, spent part of last week in Winterset. H. L. ANGEVINE received the news this week of his mother at her home in Ohio, at the age of 78 years. Henry THOMPSON has bought the confectionary store and restaurant of John ANDERSON on the east side. Mr. SHAMBAUGH of Ohio, is visiting his cousins, Adam and John SHAMBAUGH, of Jefferson township. W. R. DEWITT opened his winter school at the MCCALMAN school house last Monday. Dr. MALTBY has purchased the BENNETT farm in Walnut township. A. HILL has started a new meat market on the west side. Dr. and Mrs. BEVINGTON gave a large evening party last week. Martin GRISWOLD of Penn township, died the first of the week of typhoid fever. Mr. GRISWOLD’S family have all been sick with the fever, but are now out of danger. James E. ENGLAND of Powesheik county, has bought the HACKERSON 80 in Jackson township, paying $1,600. Elder H. ELLIS, who married Mrs. Kendall of this place last winter, recently died at his home in Bainbridge, Indiana. Mrs. ELLIS will probably return to Winterset to live. Iowa December 25, 1880 One of our dry goods houses sold 300 silk handkerchiefs the week before Christmas. Madison county employs 105 male and 172 female teachers, paying the males on the average per month $28.90 per month, the females $27.00 per month. She has 5358 scholars and the average cost per month for tuition per pupil is $1.33. Her school houses are valued at $116.73. One death was reported last week, that of Franklin Wight. (Son of James E. and Harriet M. (Howard) Wight, was badly burned when his clothes caught on fire and died several hours later of those injuries.) Mr. COX of the Dexter Herald has been engaged to teach next year. Charlie CONSTABLE and Miss Lizzie GRIFFIN were married last Sunday, at the residence of the bride’s mother by Rev. John HESTWOOD. The Odd Fellows fraternity of this place will give a public installation Tuesday afternoon, January 4th. The St. Charles and Macksburg lodges are expected to be in attendance. SNYDER, Treasurer Ed WHEELOCK put in an appearance Thursday evening to spend the holidays with relatives here. Our merchants have not had such a holiday trade for many years. The amount of goods sold for holiday purposes were extraordinary. A party of young folks in sleighs went up to W. T. FORD’S Thursday night. They had a grand time as they always do there. Ten degrees below zero on Monday morning and 12 below on Tuesday. Mr. Charles THRIFT and Miss Della HARRELL were married at the home of the bride’s mother in Monroe township, Sunday night. Both are very worthy young people and the Madisonian joins with their many friends in wishing them a long and prosperous life.
