Iowa January 1, 1880 The marriage of Rev. J. H. MALCOLM and Miss Clara PITZER took place at the residence of J. S. MCCAUGHAN on Christmas night, with the Rev. John FULTON performing the ceremony, assisted by Rev. POTTER. The groom is a young minister of the Presbyterian church and has charge of the Presbyterian church in South Des Moines. Captain A. YEAGER died at Colorado Springs. About 6,000 bushels of corn is the amount received by our buyers on Saturday. Married: C. O. CLEMENTS and Miss O. Haxton on the 24th of December, 1879. E. R. ZELLER and wife returned to Winterset Wednesday evening. Mr. ZELLER has been employed writing the history of Keokuk county, and he has been given some very high compliments for the manner in which the work was executed. Mrs. George W. HARDEN died at Montezuma, Iowa A New Year’s day reception was given. The program began at 1 o’clock. The reception committee consists of Messrs. William HODGE, J. W. MILLER, A. W. C. WEEKS, A. W. CRAWFORD, Ed BALLARD, J. A. SANFORD, S. B. WHEELOCK, A. H. SLOAN, T. C. GILPIN, S. B. CHERRY, Charles GRATZ, and C. C. GOODALE. They will receive in the various rooms of the hotel. The marriage of O. R. CONKEY and Miss Ida May BERTHOLF took place on 30th of November, 1879. Lemuel BISHOP has been appointed postmaster at Kasson, this county, in place of James V. KIRKPATRICK. The Winterset Madisonian Winterset, Madison Co. Iowa January 8, 1880 The vicinity of Stuart will indulge in a fox hunt this week. It is said that during the year there will be more improvements in Madison county than in any other year in its history. The board of supervisors commenced their session Monday. Mr. BUCHANAN took his seat. Mr. MARLEY was elected chairman. Steven PARKER and Miss Lovina REIGLE were married on January 1st. A. SAWHILL, of Walnut township has sold his forty acres to A. HOLLINGSWORTH. O. F. SMITH has sold his farm to Mr. BEARDSLEY, of Scott township and is going to Kansas. The Winterset Madisonian Winterset, Madison Co. Iowa January 15, 1880 The building boom for the coming season is already assuming proportions. The spicy Des Moines Mail Car has this to say, “The Madisonian is one of the oldest newspapers in central Iowa, having been in existence when Des Moines was merely an Indian post.” Mrs. Nancy CONNORAN died on January 7th, the wife of Edward CONNORAN. M. D. CANFIELD has sold his Ohio township farm to a Mr. WORTHING, of Ohio. He got $6,720 cash for 240 acres. Mr. CANFIELD then bought Mr. B. PAYTON’S 240 acres in Jefferson township, paying $7,000 for it. Nathan WILLIAMS died January 8th, aged 79 years. The citizens of Jefferson township have organized a Farmers’ Mutual Insurance company. Intending to operate in Madison county and the south half of Dallas county. Officers are: Emerous HAZEN, president; L. BALLOU, vice president; H. D. MCCOMB, secretary; John WESTFALL, treasurer; directors are: A. B. KIRKPATRICK, William McDonald, J. C. WEEDE, F. P. HAZEN, Harry LITTON, J. J. SMITH, A. P. FITCH, F. MARQUARDT, C. PITZER of McPherson, Kansas, is in Winterset visiting old friends and relatives. Miss Kate COMPTON, sister of Frank COMPTON, died on January 14th. Mrs. SCHIMMERHORN, of Council Bluffs, is in Winterset, visiting at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Cherry. C. B. MCDONALD of Douglas township, has purchased the 160 acre farm of David SHIELDS in Jefferson township and will move onto it this spring. M. B. TERRILL, of the firm of TERRILL Bros., left this week for Connecticut, to visit his old home and friends. The Winterset Madisonian Winterset, Madison Co. Iowa January 29, 1880 The Rev. Henry WALLACE intends moving to Greenfield in the spring. He has ordered plans for a fine new residence, to be built in that town. The firm of GRATZ & TATE, have dissolved partnership. Mr. TATE continuing in the business. It is said that Mr. GRATZ will move to Des Moines. T. F. MARDIS has received the contract of putting up a building for A. R. DABNEY, on the north side of the square. Miss Caroline Wilson, of Earlham, died last Friday morning after a short and severe illness with lung fever. Byron TUCKER and Willie POTTER are going to build a creamery in the east part of town in the spring, on lots purchased of C. A. GASKILL. W. F. PITZER, who moved from Winterset to Kansas several years ago, has decided to relocate in Winterset, and has purchased the REYNOLDS property on Jefferson street. The Agricultural society has held a meeting last Friday afternoon in the court house. Messrs. TAPLEY, HAZEN and LOTHROP were appointed a committee to revise a premium list. Judge N. W. GARRETSON, now of Portland, Oregon, enclosing subscription money for two years in advance, takes occasion to note that this was his 26th renewal.
