Iowa November 4, 1880 Our Literary club has made arrangements with Schulyer COLFAX to deliver his great lecture on LINCOLN in our city on the evening of November 30. This lecture has attracted the attention of the nation. Mr. COLFAX knew Mr. LINCOLN well, and he will tell us much that is interesting and new. The torch light procession Wednesday night was the grandest thing of the kind ever in Winterset. J. W. MILLER, of this paper, left Wednesday for Iowa City, where he will meet Mrs. MILLER, who is returning home from a visit to Selena, Kansas. Mrs. Hannah DAY, of Winterset, has been visiting her many friends of Earlham and vicinity. One of our Madison County boys, Mr. Leslie P. HIATT, of Peru, has lately received a patent for an improvement on wrenches. It is a very useful invention. The program of the third semi-annual meetings of the Lincoln township Sabbath school convention is to be held at the Beerbower schoolhouse on November 25the and 26th. Miss Addie HAYDEN, formerly of Winterset, was elected recorder of Warren County. Henry WILSON, of Dexter, has moved to Winterset, where he will start a restaurant. The new Rock City creamery will be ready to commence business the first of December next, where the old woolen mills of White and Munger used to be, west of town one mile. The following were elected to office at the recent election: President, James A. GARFIELD; congress, John A. CARSON; circuit court, S. A. CALLVERT; supervisor, Charles POLK; clerk, W. R. SHRIVER, and recorder, J. A. SANFORD. Winfield S. ST. JOHN and Miss Elinora C. WEST, were married on October 31st. at the home of the bride’s parents in Monroe township, O. H. DERRY, officiating. On November 2, occurred the marriage of Alfred R. TATE and Miss Artie M. GEE, both of Madison County, with the Rev. C. T. MCCAUGHAN officiating. At the Baptist state convention, recently held at Mason City, a state Women’s Foreign Missionary society was formed, with Mrs. John FULTON, formerly of this city, as president. Iowa November 24, 1880 The land in section fifteen, Jefferson township, belonging to the SHAFER estate, was sold last Saturday W. N. GOODSON bought the northeast quarter at $7.00 per acre. William HOFFSTOT bought the southeast quarter at $15.30 per acre and J. B. CLANTON bought the southwest quarter at $16.15 per acre. W. C. NEWLON and J. B. LEONARD were referees. Last evening at 6 o’clock, Rev. Father GAULE, of this city, at his residence, united in marriage W. P. GUIBERSON and Miss Marlon HOLCOMB. The bride and groom are members of the KENDALL Dramatic company, now playing an engagement at Bacon’s Opera house, the Atlantic Telegraph. The Citizens National bank alone paid out for hogs last week $18,000. Married on the 11th, by Rev. Thomas FEELEY, Mr. John H. HENRY and Miss Martha A. BARDRICK, all of Madison county. A few years ago, Madison county had a court house which cost one hundred and ten thousand dollars. The building was fired in the tall dome and was burned to the ground. Before the smoldering ruins had quit smoking, the people voted almost unanimously to rebuild it, and so it was rebuilt, costing one hundred thousand dollars the second time. It is built of stone and is the finest court house in Iowa. The people of Madison county take pride in Winterset, the county seat and in their new court house, the Atlantic Telegraph. Mr. Isaac CALLISON, father of V. L. CALLISON, died and his obituary was published in the Abingdon, Illinois Enterprise in its November 5th issue. This has been a very busy year for Winterset and many valuable improvements have been made. We give below a list of the most important ones. M. R. Besides this, many others have made extensive and valuable improvements to their residences, which brings the total to $ 48,200. At the residence of W. W. MCKNIGHT, on Thanksgiving night, assembled one of the most brilliant gatherings, the occasion being the marriage of Laura MCKNIGHT and Charles W. DORR, of Des Moines.
