Stokes county, N.C. in 1819. Age 13 went with parents to Putnam county, Ind. Age 22 m. J. D. Hartman. 1854 to Madison county, Iowa. He died June 1896. 8 ch. 5girls, 3 boys. 1 son and 4 girls survive. Jackson county, Indiana, Apr. 17, 1836. d. at Truro, June 11, 1915. Moved to Iowa in 1855. In 1862 he enlisted in Co. H. 23rd Iowa Vol. Inf. Served 3 years. Took part in battles of Pittman's Ferry, Jackson, Miss, Fort Esperanges, Tex; and Spanish Port and Mobile, Ala. Also seige of Vicksburg. m. 1866 to Miss Elizabeth Holmes. She d. 1896. 4 children, Hattie Toney of Blue Ridge, Mo; Nellie Scott, d. 1895; Lillie Smith of St. Charles and Ida Rankin who d. 10 years ago. Also 2 sisters, Mrs. Laura Hiatt of Edmond, Okla and Mrs. Mary Young of Calif. Young Cemetery Hiatt, Elijah, b. Grant county, Ind. 28 Apr 1835. d. near Truro, 25 Mar. 1903. Parents d. when he was about 12. Came to Iowa in 1856. 1862 to Civil War. m. Mary A. Holmes 3 Oct 1865. 3 sons, 2 daughters, Alonzo A., Ernest B., E. Wayne, Viola and Martha A. Hazen. Hartman Cemetery. Hiatt, Rebecca Jane Pearson, d. Peru, Aug. 31, 1911. 83 years 1 month 7 days. b. Clinton county, Ohio in 1828. Age 8 moved to Marion, Grant county, Indiana where she m. Jesse Hiatt, Nov. 29, 1848. He d. 13 yeaars ago. Moved to Peru 1856. Surviving children, S. L.; N. W.; and Sarah Hiatt of East Peru & Mrs. O. D. Silverthorne of Hebron. Peru cemetery. Holden, Claude, Services for Claude H. Holden, 70, of 1509 Forty-seventh St., who was dead on arrival at Mercy Hospital Wednesday from a heart attack, will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Holden was mail foreman for 17 years at Meredith Publishing Co., retiring in 1961. Born at Galva, Ill., he lived 20 years in Truro before moving here in 1944. He attended College Avenue Christian Church and was a member of the International Mailers Union. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Runciman, with whom he made his home; two brothers, Harold K. of Seal Beach, Calif., and Frank V. of Athens, Ala., and two grandsons January 7-1967 Holden, Mrs. Claude (Mabel), Services for Mrs. Claude Holden, 69 of 3505 Thirty-seventh St., who died of cancer and a heart ailment Sunday at home, will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Gardens Cemetery. Mrs. Holden had been ill seven months. Born at Independence, Kan., she moved here from Truro 21 years ago. She was a member of College Avenue Christian Church. Surviving are her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Cynthia Runciman of Des Moines; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Poindexter of Rupert, Idaho, and two grandsons. Holmes, Archibald, b. Tuscarawas county, Ohio, 6 Jan 1833 m. Eliza Jane Middleton 1854 and shortly after moved to Van Buren county. In 1859 they came to Madison county. 9 children, A. M.; C. L.; Elizabeth and Florence deceased. Surviving, Mrs. John Switzer of Osceola, I. E. Holmes and Mary Lyons of Truro; Horace H. Holmes of Des Moines; J. W. Holmes of Lincoln. His wife d. One of last of the pioneers, Reuben Foster & Moses Canfield still remaining, of the group which located here at the same time. Residing here since 1856. Vet. of Co. Pocahontas county, Iowa Nov. 14, 1888. d. at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines July 16, 1920. Only son of I. E. Holmes. Moved to Truro as a baby. m. Lydia B. Day of near Winterset Dec. 23, 1912. 3 children, Myrtle Louise, died in infancy; Helen Roberta and Iven Ernest. Surviving, father and mother, wife and 2 children and only sister, Maud Reed. Holmes, I. E., b. Aug. 13, 1860 one and one half miles N. E. of Truro to Archibald and Elizabeth Holmes. d. Apr. 19, 1951. He was 1 of a family of 9 children. His mother d. when he was 9 years of age. 1 Feb 1888 m. Emma C. Cobbs of Truro. Son Ernest d. 1920, wife d. 1932. Surviving - dau. Mrs. C. N. Reed of Truro. 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren. Bro. H. H. of Sacramento, sister, Mrs. Mary E. Lyons of Glendale Holmes, Isaac, b. Tuscarawas county, Ohio, 26 Feb 1839. d. in Truro, 20 Nov 1907. At age of 14 he went to Van Buren county. In 1853 to Ohio Twp. m. Lorinda Bishop 10 Apr 1860. 5 children, Wm. H. and Nora of Madison county' Mrs. W. G. Caskey of S.E. Kansas; Mrs. M. C. Douglas of Valley Junction and D. F. of Visallia, Calif. Mrs. Holmes d. 8 Oct 1872. m. 2nd Mattie Carter 26 Dec 1876 who with 1 son & 2 dau. survive. Children are Mrs. W. O. Patterson, Earl and Audrey, all of Madison county. Also surviving are 2 bro. and 3 sis & 14 grandchildren. Holmes, James McKinsey, b. Tuscarawas county, Ohio, near Newcomers town on Sep. 4, 1849. d. July 13, 1922. 10th child of Wm. and Elizabeth Holmes, having 6 sisters, 4 brothers. When 6 moved to Van Buren county for 3 years, then to Madison county. In 1873 m. Elizabeth Priest. 3 children, 1 dying in infancy. Wife d. Oct 12, 1878. On Feb 27, 1884 m. Anna Carter of St. Charles. 3 children, 2 daughters, 1 son. In Oct. 1921 wife d. at home of dau. Mrs. John Perkins of Weldon, Ill. Surviving are Mrs. W. D. Smith of near Truro, Mrs. Charles W. Patterson of near Osceola, Mrs. John Perkins of Weldon, Ill, Mrs. E. Hendrickson of Cumming, Ia. and 1 son Guy of Clarion Holmes, Martha Ann Tisdale Caskey, b. Ohio, Oct 12, 1832. d. near Truro, Nov 29, 1912. Moved as a child to Indiana. Dec. 7, 1854 m. George Caskey. 2 children, R. T. of Truro, W. G. of Corning. Husband died Oct 18, 1862. She m. A. Holmes, Mar 9, 1873 Holmes, Ruth, d. 6 Feb 1904. Hartman Cemetery Houlette, Agnes Smith Clark, b. Belfast Ireland 14 Jul 1828. d. near St. Charles, age 89years 19 days. When 8 came with parents, James & Margaret Clark to America and settled in Pa. on 29 Jan 1844. She m. James D. Houlette That fall they moved to Ohio then to Menard county, Ill. In 1867 to Madison county, Iowa, near Truro. In 1879 to near Hanley. 7 children, Margaret Slinker of Payette, Idaho; Susan Schmuck of Des Moines; Robert S. Houlette, James C. Houlette, Louis S. Houlette of Kansas City; Wm. P. Houlette of Hanley and Stephen E. Houlette of Des Moines, all survive except James G. (or C.) who d. Feb 9th. Also 1 bro. 3 sis. 23 grandchildren, 29 great grandchildren. Husband d. about 2 years ago. Houlette, Annah Margaret, b. Ohio, Mar 15, 1845. m. Levi Slinker, Mar. 18, 1863. Moved to Iowa till 1907 then to Payette, Idaho where she d. Oct. 13, 1912. 6 children, 3 sons, 3 daughters, all living. Riverside Cemetery, Ladies of Relief Corps have charge at grave. Huffman, George C., d. 15 Jul 1902. A little past age 40. Resident of this vicinity for several years. Buried Hartman Cemetery beside dau., Edna. Wife & 3 dau. survive. Huffman, Ida, Killed by C. Mrs. Susanna Patterson in Truro, Dec. 4, 1908 age 92 years 5 months 23 days. In 1841 he m. Matilda Holmes of Ohio & in 1844 moved to Iowa settling in Van Buren county. To Clarke county Apr. 1856. 8 children, Susanna C., Priscilla W., John B., Catherine A., Benton, Theodore W., Alice M. and Wm. and Isaac, twins, later dying at age 1. Wife d. Apr. 1862 and on Feb. 26, 1863 m. Nancy Nixon. 1 child, Jennie, now Mrs. Thomas Murphy of Des Moines.
