A former Lamoille resident, John Kirkman Huff, 25, has been reported drowned at sea in messages received by J. H. Huff of Lamoille and Mrs. Ira Lively, route 3, Marshalltown, grandfather and aunt of the sailor. John Kirkman Huff drowned while in the execution of his duties in combat with the enemy aboard the USS Tuna. He lost his footing and was knocked over the side of the ship. Every effort was made to rescue him, but approximately five minutes after he fell, and while the ship was manuvering to rescue him, he was seen to go under and not come up again. The youth, who had spent much of his early boyhood in the Lamoille vicinity, was the son of Merle L. Huff of Freeport, Ill., and Mrs. Flora Huff of Knierim. He later lived in Kansas and Missouri. He had been a veteran of seven years service in the Navy and recently had been on a submarine destroyer off the Atlantic coast. Surviving are his parents, the sailor's only sister, Madeline Huff Smotherman, having preceded him in death only 13 months ago, and a nephew, Bobbie Smotherman.
