OBITUARY: Howard Lewis, Mitchell County, Iowa [Mitchell County Press-News Online; Posted Sept. 11, 2001 -- www.mcpress.com] Howard W. Lewis [1906-2001] Funeral services were held Friday, September 7, 2001 at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage, for Howard Wellington Lewis, age 95, of Mason City, formerly of Osage and Forest City. Rev. David Samuelson of Forest City officiated. Interment was in the Orchard Cemetery. He died Tuesday, Sept 4, 2001 at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Howard was born March 14, 1906 on a farm near Orchard in Mitchell County the son of Charles and Lillian (Lee) Lewis. He graduated from Orchard High School on May 31, 1923. He worked at State Savings Bank of Orchard from 1923 to 1927. In 1927 Howard attended the fall term at Cedar Rapids Business College. He then worked at Charles City Western Railway as a warehouse man and billing clerk from 1928 to 1931. He returned home to help his father on the farm from 1931 to 1944. When his father retired, Howard moved the family into Osage and began working as an electrician at Davidson Gas and Electric from 1944 to 1951. Howard switched employment to become a tractor mechanic and then parts manager for four owners at the John Deere dealership from 1951 to 1973. He was united in marriage to Blanche Marie Novak from Mitchell on October 8, 1927. To this union were born two daughters, Patricia Ann and Marita Louise. Blanche died in 1971. Howard served many years with the Mitchell County Fair Board as the secretary and also continued doing electric and cabinet work for friends. In addition, he made several clocks, wagons and other wood objects including the large cross that hangs in the sanctuary of the United Church of Christ of Osage. Howard was united in marriage to Maude Johnson of Orchard on June 16, 1982 and moved to her home in Orchard and then to Forest City. He revitalized his drum playing talents in 1996 and with organist Elsie Vaurie of Garner and later Rose Wieland of Forest City as a piano-drum team playing consistently for "Old Folks" (he was 90 plus at the time!) at the Forest City Senior Center and at the Good Samaritan Center in Forest City. Until a week before his death, he continued playing the drums to entertain others. Preceding him in death were his parents Charles and Lillian (Lee) Lewis, his step-mother Linnie (Shotwell) Lewis, his wives, Blanche Marie Novak and Maude Johnson; two brothers, Frank and Lee; two sisters, Ona Lewis and Mildred Williams. Those that survive him include two daughters, Patricia Vagenas and her husband Peter of Newark, Delaware and Marita Almquist and her husband David of Rockville, Maryland; step-daughter, Elaine Campney and her husband Richard of Forest City; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
