OBITUARY: Dr. Charles D. Rice, Mitchell County, Iowa [Mitchell County Press-News -- Posted Aug. 21, 2001 -- www.mcpress.com ] Dr. Charles D. Rice [1921-2001] Funeral services were held Monday, August 20, 2001 at the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church in Osage for Charles Dean Rice, age 79, of Osage. Rev. Rick Magstadt officiated. Interment was in the Osage Cemetery. Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home was in charge. Dr. Rice died Thursday, August 16, 2001 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. Charles was born to Chester and Leona (Hungerford) Rice on the 25th of December, 1921 in Osage. He attended school in Osage and Waterloo, Iowa and graduated from Osage High School in 1940. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps on Jan. 27, 1941 and served his country in WWII in New Guinea. He was honorably discharged from the service in Jan. of 1945. He was awarded several medals, including two Bronze Stars, Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster and the Distinquished Flying Cross. He attended Northern Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, IL and received his Dr. of Optometry degree in 1948. He opened his practice in Jan. of 1949 and continued his practice in Osage for 51 years. He always enjoyed living and working in his hometown of Osage. Dean and Gloria Parr were united in marriage on Feb. 18, 1951 and celebrated their 50th Anniversary this year. They were blessed with two children, Deborah and David. He is so sadly missed by his wife, children and their families whom he loved so much. Dean was baptized as a youth and was a member of First Baptist Church of Osage and the last few years he attended the Christian and Missionary Alliance Church of Osage. Charles was a member of the Osage American Legion Post #278 and the Osage V.F.W. Post #7920. Preceding him in death were his grandparents; parents; a brother, John Rice; a nephew David Horner and his family; and a niece Valerie Erikson. Those that survive him include is wife, Gloria of Osage; and his daughter Deborah Farkas and her children Rachel and Amy of Osage; his son, David and his wife, Linda and their children Katie and Jason of Osage; his sister, Marilynn Horner of Vandalia, OH; a sister-in-law, Irene Rice of Orlando, FL; and an aunt, Margaret Rice of Osage and several nieces and nephews.
