OBITUARY: Winther, Carroll Lee, Mitchell County, Iowa [Mitchell County Press-News, www.mcpress.com -- Posted Sept. 4, 2001] Carroll Lee Winther [1920-2001] Carroll Lee Winther died July 14, 2001 at the Veteran’s Administration Medical Center in Minneapolis. Family and friends may honor his memory in a service at 12:30 pm on September 14, 2001 at the Minnesota Cremation Society, 4343 Nicollet Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55409. Pastor Elizabeth Strenge of Celebration Lutheran Church, Sartell, MN will officiate. Interment will follow at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN. Carroll Lee Winther was born June 8, 1920 near Bassett, Iowa the son of Arthur L. and Myrtle (Usher) Winther. He attended the one-room May School near the family farm northeast of Osage. He graduated from Osage High School in 1937. Carroll enlisted in the Army in June 1941 and trained as an airplane mechanic. He wanted to fly, so was discharged and then re-enlisted in the Army Air Force and earned his wings June 26, 1943 at Moore Field, Mission, TX. He married Veronica Wicke on May 10, 1944 and a week later left for 15 months of service as a C-47 transport pilot with the 10th Army Air Force in the China-Burma-India Theatre of Operations. He was awarded the Air Medal with three Bronze Leaf Clusters, the Distinquished Flying Cross and two Bronze Leaf Clusters, the Asiastic Theater Ribbon and two Campaign Starts. He attended Iowa State College (now ISU) and in the work force became a skilled toolmaker spending most of the years with Swiss-Matic in Minneapolis, MN. He retired in June 1999, and four months later suffered a heart attack and his health gradually declined. Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, John. Those that survive him include his former wife; a son, David H. (Charyl) of Green Bay, WI, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
