Rev. Daniel I. Coon

OSAGE. A former Osage resident, the Rev. Daniel I. Coon, 102, died Tuesday 
at Inglewood, Calif., where he has been living since 1936. Born in Osage, 
the Rev. Mr. Coon attended Cedar Valley Seminary, The University of Iowa 
and the University of Chicago. He served as a Baptist minister in Osage, 
Waverly and Washington, Iowa, as well as Colorado and Nebraska. Survivors 
include a son, Wendell, San Francisco. (1966)

COON, Rev. Daniel I. 

Funeral Held for Former Osage Pastor, Dan Coon, 102 in California. 

Private funeral services were held in Los Angeles, Calif., last week for the 
Rev. Daniel Coon, 102, former pastor of the Baptist church in Osage. The 
Rev. Mr. Coon died Jan. 3, at the Hyde Park rest home, where he had been 
a resident for two months. 

For many years the Rev. Mr. Coon was California correspondent to The 
Press-News, writing the column "Out In California". 

Daniel I. Coon was born Dec. 16, 1863 on a farm near Mitchell now occupied 
by the Ed Schmidt family, the son of Samuel and Ellen O'Connor Coon. He 
attended the rural school and Cedar Valley seminary in Osage. He furthered 
his education at the University of Iowa, graduating in 1889, and was a 
theology student at the University of Chicago and at universities in 
Germany. 

In 1889 he accepted the pastorate of the Baptist church in Osage and served 
in Waverly from 1904 to 1909, when he became pastor at Washington, Iowa. 
He also served parishes in Greeley, Colo. and Kearney Neb., before retiring 
to California in 1936. 

His marriage to Catherine F. (Kittie) Bacon of Osage took place June 15, 
1904. She died nine years ago. As a young woman she was an instructor at 
the Cedar Valley seminary. 

The Rev. Mr. Coon was an active member of the Osage club in Los Angeles, 
and of the Iowa Association attending the annual Iowa picnics and reporting 
them to The Press-News. Until this year he addressed nearly 400 Christmas 
greeting cards to friends each year. 

He was confined to the rest home following minor surgery and a fall in which 
he suffered a hair-line fracture of his shoulder. 

The Rev. Daniel Coon was the subject of an article in the University of Iowa 
Bulletin of the Institute of Gerontology in April 1964. 

He was honored by the Iowa Association of Southern California with a 
citation for his literary efforts and outstanding work in behalf of 
the association, and was presented a life membership, an honor given to 
four persons thus far: the Rev. Mr. Coon, Chief Justice Earl Warren and 
Senators B. B. Hickenlooper and Thomas E. Martin. 

The Rev. Mr. Coon is survived by one son, Wendall, San Francisco California. 
Mrs. Vera Williams of Osage is a niece of Rev. Coon, and George Cole of 
Arcadia, Calif. is his nephew. 

He was preceded in death by his wife; three children, two sisters, three 
brothers and two half-brothers.
