OBITUARY: Rose Marion Thorson Fries, Mitchell County, Iowa [Mitchell County Press-News, online, www.mcpress.com, Posted Nov. 27, 2001] Rose Marion Thorson Fries Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2001 at the First Lutheran Church in St. Ansgar for Rose Marion Fries, age 88, of St. Ansgar. Rev. Robert Porisch officiated. Entombment took place today, Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2001 at Mount Washington Cemetery, Independence, MO. Schroeder and Sites Funeral Home, St. Ansgar, in charge of arrangements. She died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2001 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage. Rose Marion Fries was born June 17, 1913 in Newburg Township, Mitchell County, IA the daughter of Ole E. and Amelia Moe Thorson. She was baptized and confirmed in the First Lutheran Church of St. Ansgar. Rose graduated from St. Ansgar High School in 1931. She also graduated from Waldorf College in Forest City and from Hamilton Business College in Mason City, IA. In 1939, she started working for the U.S. Weather Service in Iowa City and in 1943 she was transferred to the Weather Service in Kansas City, MO and worked there until her retirement in 1972. On Jan. 22, 1949 Rose married William Fries of Kansas City, MO. They made their home in Kansas City until William's health failed and they moved to St. Ansgar to be near her family. William passed away Aug. 4, 1989. Rose continued to live here and made her home at the Worth Living Center in St. Ansgar until she entered the Good Samaritan Center on Feb. 28, 1997. She enjoyed reading and visiting with her many friends at the center. For many years, she had a hobby of tracing family history and has passed much of the information to her remaining family members. Rose was the last surviving member of the family of nine brothers and sisters. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William; brothers, Roy, Clifford, Leon, Donald, Hubert, Annis and sisters, Alma Sanders and Mildred Tesch; one niece and two nephews. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Rose Thorson of St. Ansgar; 16 nieces and nephews; many great nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
