OBITUARY: Shirley May Edel Hammerstrom, Mitchell county, Iowa [Mitchell County Press-News online -- Posted Mar. 13, 2002 -- www.mcpress.com] Shirley May Hammerstrom Funeral services were held on Friday, March 8, 2002 at the Riceville United Methodist Church for Shirley May Hammerstrom, age 81, of Riceville. Rev. Michael Carey officiated and burial was in Riverside Cemetery, Riceville. Lindstrom Funeral Home, Riceville was in charge of arrangements. She died Tuesday, March 5, 2002 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage. Shirley May Edel Hammerstrom was born on the family farm near Randalia, IA on May 31, 1920 to Roy and Julia Campbell Edel. She attended country school within one mile of the family farm. Shirley graduated from Randalia High School and furthered her education at Upper Iowa University. Her first teaching position was in a country school. From this position, she moved to Burt, IA to teach and met the love of her life, dear and gentle Kenneth "Chinks" Hammerstrom. On Aug. 3, 1947 Shirley was united in marriage to Kenneth Hammerstrom in Randalia, IA at the Randalia United Methodist church, they established their home in Burt. After her retirement with "Chinks" in poor health, they spent their days together and for 14 years, Shirley and "Chinks" visited many friends and relatives and enjoyed their time at their cabin in Nevis, MN. Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Kenneth; and her brother-in-law, LeRoy Whiteford. Those that survive her include nieces and nephews, a great-niece, brother-in- law and sister-in-law.
