Smolik, 90, of Osage, died Sunday (June 6, 1999) at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center, Osage. Ernest was born Dec. 13, 1908, in Brainard, Neb., the son of Frank and Anna (Cejka) Smolik. He graduated from Cresco High School where he participated in wrestling. After high school, he worked for a construction company and then farmed with his brothers, Ed and Ray. He also worked for Pioneer Seed Co., and in 1935, he became the first Pioneer Seed Corn dealer in Mitchell County. In 1942, he came a partner in the Orchard Elevator and was sole owner from 1948 until he retired. He was on the Board of Directors of the Iowa Grain and Feed Association for two terms and participated in civic affairs by serving on the Mitchell County School Board and serving as Orchard mayor and council person for many years. Ernest married Velva Wright of Little Cedar on May 1, 1937, at the Little Brown Church, in Nashua. They lived in the Orchard and Osage area all of their married lives. For many years, he played softball, bowled and golfed. He also enjoyed fishing and gardening. He was a 50 year member of the Osage Masonic Lodge 102 A.F. & A.M. Memorials may be directed to the Orchard American Legion Post 641 at P. O. Box 65, Orchard, Iowa 50460. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 10, at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the Rev. Arthur J. Hill officiating and Masonic Rites by the Osage Masonic Lodge 102 A.F. & A.M. Interment will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage, with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Visitation will continue on Thursday until time of services. He is survived by one son, Gary Smolik and his wife, Margaret, of Orchard; four grandchildren, Sister Katherine Smolik, OSB of Clyde, Mo.; Frank Smolik and his wife, Becky, of Mason City; Mark Smolik, of Orchard; and Michael Smolik and his wife, Jennifer, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; three brothers, Edward Smolik and Ray Smolik, both of Osage; and Duane Smolik, of San Jose, Calif.; two sisters, Lydia Deal, of Boone, Iowa and Helen Lund, of Bellevue, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Velva; two sisters, Adeline Michels and Libby Smolik; a brother, George Smolik; and his parents.
