OBITUARY: Joseph "Joe" Vulk, Sr., Mitchell County, Iowa [Mitchell County Press-news oline - Posted Feb. 27, 2002 - www.mcpress.com] Joseph "Joe" Vulk, Sr. A Scripture Memorial service was held at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 27, 2002 for Joseph "Joe" Vulk, Sr., age 88, of Osage, at Champion-Bucheit Funeral Home, Osage. Rev. Philip Recker officiated. His body was cremated and a private burial will take place at a later date. Mr. Vulk passed away with his family at his side on Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002 at the Mitchell County Regional Health Center after a lengthy illness. Joe was born Sept. 6, 1913 in Chicago, ILL the oldest child of Lewis and Frances (Kucera) Vulk. The family moved to the Osage area when he was two. Joe grew up in the Osage area and graduated from Osage Community High School. After graduation, he moved back to Chicago and worked in a defense plant during the war. There he married his longtime sweetheart Mary Kordes of Mitchell, IA. Together, they moved back to Osage in 1949. Joe worked at White Farm Equipment, then known as Oliver in Charles City until retiring in 1976. After retirement, he spent many years as an avid fisherman and hunting for lost golf balls at Sunny Brae Golf Course. He was well known as "Golf Ball Joe." Preceding him in death were his parents; his brother, Lewis; sister, Beatrice and her husband, Bill Wanless. Those that survive him include his wife, Mary of 64 years; two children, Joseph Vulk Jr. and wife, Beverly of Osage; Darlene Gruis and her husband, John of Rockford; four grandchildren, Scott Gruis and wife, Cheryl of Rockford, Julie Salisbury and her husband, Doug of Nora Springs, Mike Vulk and his fiancee Nikki Papouchis of Mason City, Ruth Krones and her husband, Gary of Osage; 8 great-grandchildren, Byrce Rosel, Spenser Gruis, Nicholas, Kayee and Sawyer Salisbury, Teri Birdsall, Kaitlyn and Mackenzie Krones; a brother, Frank Vulk and his wife, Ruth of Richmond, VA; sisters-in-law, Mary Jean Vulk of Lake Mills; four nieces and three nephews.
