OBITUARY: Myrtle Anderson Counsell 1909-1998, Mitchell County, Iowa [Mason City Globe Gazette, www.globegazette.com May 3, 1998] Myrtle Anderson Counsell NEW HAVEN -- Myrtle Counsell, 88, formerly of New Haven, died Saturday (May 2, 1998) at the Faith Home, Osage. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Osage, with the Rev. Dennis Hanson and the Rev. Roy Ott officiating. Burial will be in the Osage Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. today at the Champion Funeral Home, Osage. Myrtle Counsell was born May 11, 1909, in Hannaford, N.D., the daughter of Karl "Charlie" and Thonetta "Nettie" (Brenden) Anderson. Myrtle moved with her family to Mitchell County in 1925, following the death of her father. On July 17, 1926, she married Ernest James Counsell in Charles City. They lived on a farm near New Haven for many years. They retired and moved to New Haven in 1970. When E.J. Counsell died Nov. 8, 1980, Myrtle continued to live in New Haven until moving to the Faith Home in 1989. Myrtle was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. She was an Avon representative in the area for many years. She also wrote the New Haven News column in the Mitchell County Press News for a number of years. As a surprise to her family, at the age of 76 she completed the requirements to receive her high school diploma. At that time she was the oldest individual to have graduated through North Iowa Area Community College. Myrtle is survived by one daughter, Ruth M. Wiegers and her husband, Bud, of Boise, Idaho; one daughter-in-law, Beverly R. Counsell of Cresco; 13 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ernest J. Counsell; daughter, Marise Groves; son, Carlin Counsell; and a brother, Rudolph Anderson.
