OBITUARY: Velva Margaret (Hoffman) Christensen, Mitchell County, Iowa Velva Margaret Hoffman Christensen [ St. Ansgar Enterprise, 11 SEP 1980 ] Funeral services for Mrs. Leonard Christensen, 63, who died August 31, were held September 4 at First Lutheran Church here with the Rev. Stephen Engelstad, church pastor, and the Rev. Don Comnick of Milroy, Minn. officiating. Velva Margaret Hoffman, the daughter of William and Margaretha (Levian) Hoffman, was born October 25, 1916 on a farm near Renwick, Boone township, Wright county. She was baptized January 28, 1917 at St. Paul's Lutheran church, Renwick. Her childhood days were spent with her family on their farm near Renwick. She was confirmed in May of 1930 at St. Paul's Lutheran church, Renwick, and was graduated from Renwick high school in 1934. She married Leonard Christensen of Eagle Grove May 16, 1938, at St. Paul's Lutheran church parsonage, Renwick. They made their home in St. Ansgar for their entire married life of 42 years. Mrs. Christensen was a member of First Lutheran church, St. Ansgar. She enjoyed writing poetry, and doing all that she could for her family and friends. At the time of her death, Mrs. Christensen was a member of the Academy of American Poets. She had written more than 200 poems, one of which won awards, and were published in Lyrical Iowa and the Iowa Poetry Day Association brochure. Mrs. Christensen is survived by her husband, Leonard; a daughter, Mrs. Philip (Mary Ellen) Walk of Spencer; two grandsons, Stephen Michael and Christian Paul Walk of Spencer; two sisters, Mrs. L.M. (Elvira) Bonstetter of Corwith and Mrs. Archie (Elsie) Young of Punta Gorda, Fla.; one brother, Orval Hoffman of Renwick; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and daughter, Karen Margaret. Burial was in the First Lutheran cemetery here.
