OBITUARY: Bernard John May, Mitchell County, Iowa [Mitchell County Press-News, online, www.mcpress.com, Posted Apr. 17, 2002] Bernard John May Funeral services for Bernard John May, 91, of Stacyville were held at 10:30 am, Wednesday, April 17, 2002 at Visitation Catholic Church in Stacyville with Father Joseph Schneider officiating. Interment was in Visitation Catholic Cemetery in Stacyville. Bernard died Sunday, April 14 at Mitchell County Regional Health Center in Osage. Bernard John May was born Dec. 31, 1910 in Meyer, IA the son of Henry J. and Anna M. (Hackenmiller) May. He was united in marriage to Regina Anne Bissen on Nov. 15, 1938 at Johnsburg, MN. Bernard was a life long farmer in the Johnsburg area retiring to Stacyville in 1977. He was a member of Visitation Catholic church, a member of Knights of Columbus and was instrumental in starting both the St. John's Council 3812 of Adams, MN and the Marian Council 8650 of Stacyville, serving as Marian Council's first Grand Knight. He was a fourth degree member of the Knights of Columbus Jean Pierre Aluneau Assembly in Austin, MN. May was instrumental in organizing and in the building of the Stacyville Community Nursing Home being an original board member and its first president. He also served on the Stacyville Creamery Board. After retirement he made many rosaries for family, friends and the missions. Bernard was preceded in death by his parents, son John in 1974; three brothers, Edmund, Othmar and Clement; two sisters, Sister Margaret May and Dorothy May. Survivors include his wife Regina of Stacyville; nine children, Robert (Audrey) May of Stacyville, Rita (Daniel) McCoy of Rochester, MN, Carol (John) Sullivan of Osage, Ann (Tom) Wolf of Sheffield, Gerard (Janet) May of Osage, Edward (Teresa) May of Stacyville, Pamela (Richard) Fox of Cedar Rapids, Mark (Rosanne) May of Adams, MN, Catherine (Daniel) Moellenbeck of Granger; two brothers, Fred (Dorothy) May of Rose Creek, MN, Anthony May of Fond du Lac, WI; three sisters, Elizabeth (Joseph) Martyniak of Taunton, MA, Olivia (Robert) Pitzen of Stacyville, Evelyn (Ralph) Brumm of Osage; sister-in-law, Irma May of Stacyville; 27 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
