OBITUARY: Kevin J. Mayer 1950-2002, Mitchell County, Iowa Kevin J. Mayer [Mitchell County Press-News, online, www.mcpress.com, Posted Nov. 6, 2002] Funeral services for Kevin J. "Rocky" Mayer, age 51 of rural Mantorville, MN were held Monday, October 14, 2002 with a 10:30 am Mass at Holy Family Catholic Church in Kasson, MN. Reverend Charlie Collins officiated. The 75th Regimate of the U.S. Airborne Rangers and the Kasson Legion accompanied the services. Mayer died Thursday, October 10, 2002 following a courageous battle with cancer. Kevin was born October 15, 1950 in Osage, IA. He grew up in the Stacyville area and graduated from Marian High School, Stacyville in 1968. From 1970 to 1972 he served as a Ranger in the U.S. Airborne in Vietnam, receiving two Purple Hearts. August 5, 1972 he married Grace M. Blake in Johnsburg, MN. Mayer earned a Bachelor's Degree in business and accounting from the University of Wisconsin in LaCrosse in 1979. He was employed by Menards Building Centers for 30 years and lived in various places in Wisconsin before moving to rural Mantorville in 1987. He was manager of Menards North in Rochester and was a member of the Airborne Ranger Association. He enjoyed woodworking and sports. Preceding Mayer in death were his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Mayer and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Thome and father-in-law Gene Blake. His survivors include his wife Grace, two sons Travis and wife Sarah of Rochester and Waylan at home, one daughter Michelle and husband Kirk Skogebo of Spring Valley, six grandchildren, his parents Gene and Marjorie of Stacyville, three brothers Terry and wife Linda, Wayne and wife Bonita, Dean and wife Diane, all of St. Ansgar and four sisters Sandra of Rochester, Wanda and husband Dan Warrington of St. Ansgar, Diane and husband Matt Duvall of denver, CO and Gwen and husband Josh Isler of Greeley, CO and his mother-in-law Mildred Blake of Adams.
