OBITUARY: Clarence Howard Walker, Mitchell County, Iowa [Mitchell County Press-News online - Posted June 19, 2002 - www.mcpress.com] Clarence Howard Walker Funeral services were held Monday, June 17, 2002 at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Riceville, for Clarence Howard Walker, age 85, of Riceville. Rev. Michael Parris officiated and burial was in the St. Peter's Cemetery, rural Riceville. Military rites were held by Roy Gue Post 244 of Riceville. Clarence died Thurs., June 13, 2002 at the Riceville Community Rest Home. Clarence was born April 11, 1916 in Esmond, ND, son of Christopher and Bernice Marlenee Walker. He attended local schools and graduated from high school at Colo, IA. He married Gayle Polton on June 22, 1941 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. Clarence entered the army in 1942 and served in New Guinea in the East Indies Campaigns and achieved the rank of staff sergeant. Clarence and Gayle farmed near State Center, IA when they were first married and then moved to a farm in rural Saratoga, IA. Clarence was an independant truck driver and in later years worked for Mehmert Trucking. His love of trucking never ended. Clarence and Gayle moved to Riceville in 1964. Clarence was an avid reader, enjoyed spending time with his family fishing, a home cooked meal and was an avid Riceville Wildcats fan. Preceding him in death were his parents; his wife Gayle in May of 1991; one grandson Timothy Torney; one granddaughter Christina Tonn and one sister Natalie Suddarth. Those that survive him include his two sons, Robert and his wife Kathy Walker of Riceville and Michael and his wife Brenda Walker of Kaiser, MO; four daughters, Evelyn Torney of Eastman, WI, Nancy Dobbs and her husband Jack of Osage, Betty Koschmeder and her husband Fred of Riceville, and Kathleen Tonn and her husband Leland of Britt; fifteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; one sister Elaine Stamm and her husband Ira of Twain Heart, CA.
