OBITUARY: Arlene M. Groth, 1925-1980, Mitchell County, Iowa [St. Ansgar Enterprise, 16 OCT 1980] Arlene M. Groth Funeral Held Here October 9 Funeral services for Arlene M. Groth, 55, who died at the Stacyville Nursing Home Tuesday, October 7, were held Thursday, October 9 at the Immanuel Lutheran church here with the Rev. Norman Betke officiating. Arlene Martha Matilda Groth, daughter of Henry and Ida (Belz) Groth, was born January 15, 1925 in St. Ansgar township. She was baptized February 25, 1925 at Immanuel Lutheran church here by the Rev. Paul Brammer. At the age of nine months she suffered a severe case of whooping cough which left her severely mentally retarded. Her parents cared for her at home until the age of 12 when she became a resident of State Facility, Woodward. She lived there until two years ago when she returned to this community and resided at the Stacyville Nursing Home. Miss Groth is survived by her mother, Mrs. Henry (Ida) Groth; one sister, Mrs. Harlan (Dorothy) Sponheim; two brothers, Arnold and Paul, all of St. Ansgar; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father. Burial was in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Betke in charge of committal services.
