OBITUARY: Charles R. Hungerford 1924-2003 [Mitchell County Press-News online - Posted April 2, 2003 - www.mcpress.com ] Charles R. Hungerford Funeral services were held for Charles R. "Charlie" Hungerford, age 79, of Osage on Tuesday, April 1, 2003, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. Reverend Philip Recker officiated. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Osage with military graveside service conducted by Osage American Legion Post 278. Charles died Sunday, March 30, 2003, at the Mitchell County Regional Health Care Center Hospice Unit in Osage. Charles Hungerford was born March 5, 1924 in Osage, the son of Roy and Mary (Schloff) Hungerford. He graduated from Osage High School in 1941. Charlie served with the U.S. Marines in the South Pacific during WWII. After his medical discharge from the Marines in 1943, Charlie attended Iowa State University in Ames. Later he graduated from Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis, MN. Charlie was united in marriage to Neva Fuhrman on February 14, 1952 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Osage. They made their home in Osage. He was a postal carrier in Osage for 28 years, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed farming, riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle, fishing and being with his children and grandchildren. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Jean Hungerford. His survivors include his wife Neva Hungerford of Osage; three sons Tim Hungerford and friend Lisa of Coon Rapids, MN; Mark Hungerford and his wife Cyndi of West Burlington, IA; Todd Hungerford and his wife Tina of Sierra Vista, AZ; two daughters Ann Kienzle and friend Philip of Riceville, Mary Mackelprang of Tucson, AZ; brother Jim Hungerford and his wife Wilma of Osage; sister Betty DeMar of Bloomington, MN; six grandchildren Jennifer, Nikki, Jared and Gavin Hungerford, Shane and Samantha Mackelprang; two step-grandchildren Travis and Mandy Dodd.
