OBITUARY: Alice Katherine Fossey Smesrud, 1911-1981, Mitchell County, Iowa [St. Ansgar Enterprise, 19 NOV 1981] Mrs. Vernon Smesrud Funeral Held At First Lutheran Church Funeral services for Mrs. Vernon Smesrud, 70, of St. Ansgar, who died November 12 at Methodist hospital, Rochester, Minn., were held November 16 at First Lutheran church here with the Rev. Stephen Engelstad officiating. Alice Katherine Smesrud, the daughter of Otto and Anna Fossey, was born in Osage January 11, 1911. She attended grade school at Pleasant Prairie school north of St. Ansgar, and graduated from Osage high school in 1929. June 23, 1932 she married Vernon L. Smesrud of St. Ansgar. They resided in the St. Ansgar and Osage area before moving to Little Rock, Ark. and later Springdale, Ark. where they lived for 21 years before returning to St. Ansgar in June of 1977. Mrs. Smesrud was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith, and was an active member in numerous church and civic organizations. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Irene and Olive, and two brothers, Oliver and Kenneth. Mrs. Smesrud is survived by her husband, Vernon of St. Ansgar; her step mother, Mrs. Esther Fossey of St. Ansgar; one sister, Mrs. Edith Griffith of Harrisburg, Penn.; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Robert Nyman of Key Largo, Fla. and Mrs. Shirley Fossey of St. Ansgar, 10 nieces and nephews and 20 grand nieces and nephews. Burial was in the First Lutheran cemetery with Rev. Engelstad in charge of committal services.
