OBITUARY: John Gjerstad, 1891-1981, Mitchell County, Iowa [St. Ansgar Enterprise, 12 NOV 1981] John Gjerstad Funeral services for John Gjerstad, 90, who died at Burr Oak Manor November 7, were held November 9 in Humboldt. John Gjerstad was born March 14, 1891 in Ytre Arna-Bergen, Norway, the son of Haldor and Johanna (Blom) Gjerstad. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church in Norway. He received his education in Norway, and came to the United States in 1911. He worked in St. Ansgar, and later farmed there. He returned to Norway in 1920 for one year, and again in 1935 for a three-year visit with his family. Mr. Gjerstad then moved to Austin, Minn. where he was employed at the Hormel Company until his retirement. Because of ill health he has lived at Burr Oak Manor for the past few years. He was preceded in death by his parents and five brothers and sisters in Norway, and two brothers in the United States, Olaf Gjerstad of Minneapolis and Gerhard (Guy) Gjerstad of Eagle Grove. Mr. Gjerstad is survived by one sister, Mrs. Malmfrid Kalsaas of Ytre Arna-Bergen, Norway, and nieces and nephews in Norway and the United States. Burial was in Union cemetery in Humboldt.
